You can solo everything except that one quest in Searing Gorge with the dwarf + golem combo. Actually, you might be able to solo that too, but I remember having a hard time with it back in fucking Nov '04.

For ganking, no one will (or should) be able to kill you if you level with Stam/Int gear and go 11 Holy for Consecration. It's slower than Ret with Str gear, but Ret's already so fucking slow that taking an extra 5 seconds per mob to be nigh unkillable in PvP and to be able to heal or tank dungeons is a decent trade.

Nostalrius/Elysium currently has the most "accurate" vanilla servers with the least bullshit added to it.

Vanilla is fun mostly because it's challenging and "retro".

When Vanilla came out, it was probably the most casual MMO on the market compared to the competition, but it still required a lot of time and the lore was pretty fun.

Nostalrius/Elysium, also plan on doing the first expansion, Burning Crusade.

The only other notable server right now is Kronos, but it's far easier than Elysium and less accurate.

Crestfall is the only interesting future server that should come out in early 2017. They focused on quality over early release and are working to be the most 1:1 server with items not being release before the patch they came in. Crestfall want to do, every single expansion up to Legion at some point with transfers between servers. So you could go do Vanilla, then BC, WOTLK, CATA, MOP, WoD and Legion with a single character, whenever you want.

They will have a cash shop it seem, but it will be cosmetic only and mostly stuff you could get already like Collector Edition Pets and pre patch Mounts.

Vanilla Paladin is pretty much only great at one thing, and it's healing.

It can tank and do DPS, but both of those things are better on a Warrior. You could easily level as a Prot Paladin and do instances, but raids, usually, wont let you join if you do not heal.

You could always be a alt tank Paladin, but they are rare from what I heard.

If you want to Solo most of the content, I recommend Hunter or Warlock since they have pets who can Tank.

Vanilla is really difficult compared to retail. You will probably spend about a 30 sec on a mob with a priest and have to drink and eat after 2-3 fights.

When I played on emerald dream I did all my 5 mans, both pre-raid gearing and later farming with: a prot pally, shadow priest, resto druid, warlock and a hunter (myself). We never had any trouble at all despite being a meme group. So as far as I'm concerned, paladin makes a fine 5 man tank but is poor in raids for obvious reasons. The said paladin tank also made pretty frequent use of engineering and holy water (when applicable).

I was a cata baby so Nost was my first time in Vanilla. It a very surreal and amazing experience to group up with some guy for a few hours in ashenvale. There was alliance ganking in Zoram so we grouped and started to kill them together. Then once we fucked them and they ran off we quested for awhile. Then every time he saw me in the game he would walk up to me and say hello and we might group up again and start questing down the line.

It was something I had never experience in all my years playing from Cata to WoD. The game actually felt like a real world with real people inside of it.

Well this is the first time I've heard someone call it good. The opinion a few years ago at least was that it was a total loss. How likely am I to get a spot as a raiding shadow priest on the fresh server?

I realize that I'd 100% have to heal until the debuff slots grow from 8 to 16 (around bwl?) as well as healing when called on even after that, maintaining two gear sets, always coming buffed up as possible, being willing to pass gear to dedicated healers/warlocks/mages and chugging mana pots/runes like a motherfucker - but if I stand out as obviously committed to it, I should be able to convince some guild to give me a shot, right?

My main is an SP on Nost, and I've done some raiding on him. I'm telling you, it sucks. Don't play SP if you're not gonna pvp, cause that's what the spec is all about. You can have mail and plate with stam str but thats not "tanking gear". Like I said above, I did all my level 55+ 5 mans on a previous server with a paladin tank. They never had issues holding threat, even against heavily geared dps. I HAVE played with some shit pally tanks but this dude was flat out great, not just as a tank but as a leader as well. Always marking targets on the fly, explaining strats to people who didn't know and just overall making sure the group went smooth. This all for 5 mans though, when it comes to raid content, I see no place for a paladin tank. In raids, this particular paladin just kept his prot spec, gave out his special snowflake blessing, wore healing gear and still healed above the middle of pack.

I wouldn't suggest prot paladin to anyone, really. But if you like tanking, you can certainly use that to your advantage while leveling (just get to consecration asap) as well as getting your pre-raid bis. Tanks are always in demand for 5 mans and can generally run the group in such a way that they also get to roll on their healing gear even if they aren't healing.

Consecration threat isn't anything to write home about. And that's more or less the only real threat ability they have outside of Retribution Aura and fucking judging. Oh and Exorcism/Holy Wrath in some places. And you know what? Unless you're running with some brain dead, god awful DPS, Consecration + Ret Aura sure as fuck doesn't cut it for threat. No only that, your "taunt" ability is fucking garbage and sometimes just doesn't fucking work on top of having a miss chance. I know how to lose weight. I lost 40lbs once in a few months. I can't remember if I starved myself or not. I don't think so. I've been putting myself into a caloric deficit at 2k calories per day, but I think I might have miscalculated how many calories I expend.

I ride an electric bike sometimes and that gets me sweating. But I get sinus problems every once in awhile that has me feeling pretty sick and drained so that fucked up my routine a bit.

In any case, historically Prot Paladins have tried to make themselves appear better they were. It's annoying to see clueless idiots run around spouting the same nonsense for over a decade. "I tanked on a Paladin or saw some guy tanking on a Paladin in vanilla. It worked, kinda. So that means Prot Paladins are fuckwin awesome, fuck ya Prot Paladin power!" It worked in 5 mans. It was awful, it was slow, the threat was bad (at least they had Salv to make up for it, kinda) and they took significantly more damage than Warriors or even Druids. But vanilla 5 mans were piss easy and you could get through them with a Paladin tanking. You could also get through most of the leveling dungeons with a Shaman tanking without too much of a problem. The fact that they COULD do it doesn't mean they were good at and it sure as fuck doesn't mean that they were good at it compared to Warriors or even Druids.

What I will give to Prot Paladins in vanilla and TBC is that playing that role was way, way easier than playing a Warrior properly. It's incredibly simplistic and easy to accomplish and like I said, it gets the job done. In any case, people who tout that kind of bullshit should be called out on it, if only to protect newbies from rolling a Paladin on a vanilla server thinking that they can actually tank anything meaningful.

Also, Paladin taunt wasn't in vanilla. At least I'm pretty sure it wasn't. So my bad on that part.

I've tanked 5mans as a paladin in vanilla, but not as prot, took the first 11 points in holy for consecrate since it was so good on nost and that helped a lot. I only tanked when it was taking too long to find someone else, so in that regard it was doable but not optimal. Still not a big deal and didn't have problems.
I think mostly the guy was just trying to annoy you. Holy/prot is great for farming tho and i love prot talents for random pvp or surviving ganks. Paladin is neat in that you can spec pretty much however you want to and still level efficiently, at least in my opinion (and the bugged consecrate and seal of the crusader helps of course).
I'd again have to re-check, but i believe that consecrate was scaling off of attack power and not spell power. The result was even just using rank1 on single mobs was worth it, also between that and seal of the crusader it made dps, at least during leveling for 5mans, a lot more respectable than it should have been.

Since the paladin bugs were beneficial yet shaman's elemental weapons never worked, my theory was that the nostdevs played alliance.

Nope, it's always been inferior to actually using your threat abilities. Mind you, the threat isn't bad. It gets the job done and it's easy to do. But it's better to tank stuff "manually". Not only does it make you a better player from all the practice, but you have far more control on where your threat goes which is a very important part of tanking in vanilla. It's been a while, but from the napkin math I remember doing, you had to be tanking like 9 or 10 mobs at a time before shout-tanking became better overall TPS than doing it normally. And that's in a vacuum. Like I said, being able to direct where your threat goes and when is way better than shout spam. Shout spam works, it's good, but it's the hailmark of a bad tank (or a really lazy one who just doesn't give a fuck).

In any case, first time I tried shout tanking was during Nef progress when people on the forums started talking about it. Me and the other tank in my guild had never had any issues tanking the adds in P1 but we decided to give a try one night. One try, one night. Never again. I played with shout tanking on Nost and K2 and it sucked there too compared to just tanking stuff normally.
