I'm trying to play Witcher 1 for the story but I didn't realize how AIDS the combat system would be, even after reading about it. Considering lowering difficulty from Hard to Easy just to make it less tedious. Got into Gwent closed beta a couple days. Shit's pretty fun and seems to actually require thought and smart play unlike that kiddy RNG hearthstone shit.

Made a sweet Scoi'atel deck and just crafted my first legendary so now able to pull off crazy combos.

I don't usually play Eredin on my first round. I usually do Ciri + Riders + Fog and pass (unless it's a clear Adrenaline Rush deck). That helps me going to 2nd and 3rd round with card advantage and having more chance of drawing better cards. I migt change Ciri for Imlerith in the future, though

What actually happens when you fight enemies way above your level? I was once fighing a large group of those rose knight dudes who were all above me, by like skull levels. And I was hitting around 1k a hit and I was close to levelling up. And I was shaing off miniscule ammounts like 1/25th of the hp bar. And then I killed enough to level, and in the same fight I started hitting for the same 1k only it did 1/10th of the hp bar or ther abouts

Get the griffon school general, alternate quen, most the fast attack skills except for that shitty final bleed one, and the first heavy attack. Get the first adrenalin skill and get the other general skill that lets you cast signs with adrenaline.

Axes get stuck, and witchers are all about being fast and dodging. Besides, you can't stab with a battleaxe. Heavy slices, chops and deep stabs are more viable than only strong axe blows. If you're gonna go for the strongest single attack you'd go for a polearm, but those are a bit unwieldy to travel with.

Obviously a battle axe is more balanced (and will generally have a lighter head), but a sword is to a battle axe what a battle axe is to a splitting maul.

As for reach, you can lunge with a sword, which is what gives it the reach advantage. Doing that shit with an axe will unbalance you (way more) if you miss.

Well, against monsters one of the primary advantages of axes doesn't really apply, namely fucking up shields and the enemy shield-wall. You can either hook away a shield so your buddy can kill him, or just chop it to pieces. Monsters don't generally have shields though.

The books only focus on the Wolf school, the other two schools (Griffin and Cat) are only mentioned by name and we don't learn anything else about them. Viper, Bear and Manticore schools are all CDPR's inventions. And it really feels like the witcher school related lore in TW3 mostly exists just to justify the witcher gear hunts. Bear school in particular only seems to exist to have a heavier armor to match Skellige's aesthetics.

Speaking of shields, why don't witchers use them? Something small, light. Nekkers and drowners aren't so strong that just blocking their attacks is a bad idea and more importantly, a shield could be used to deflect blows, like those coming from a werewolf. you don't take it head on, just bat it aside.

I win first round, he wins second after doin ban ard crazy combos, third round begins with the headless silver card returning with two health, and my board being empty.

My cards in hand are clear skies, and scorch, so my chances of winning are 0 if he has another creature. However his last two cards are Sabrina and swallow potion, and he decides to give me three free power for no reason.

That's one thing. He's also invulnerable while face down. Maybe there's something else you can do too that's not immediately obvious. It's only a okay card as far as I can tell though, and will probably be the first one to go if you need a silver slot for something else.

Which out of these three do you guys prefer? Has anyone found Milva to be useful? Frightener seems ok, needs a bit more building around then id like, Margarita seems all around good for an eventual promote deck.

Milva is useful. With Scoiatel you should always have card advantage, so you can play her once you opponent runs out of cards. Risky, but can be very effective.

A good way to look at it is the abilitys of the classes. Which of the 4 is most useful for a starting player? Which of the hero abilities requires the least deck synergy etc to use?

As for beating monsters it depends on what type of monster deck theyre playing. Generally just try to not let them have a high chance to keep their high power minion for the next round, ie leave the little foglets etc alive so that they might get chosen. Aside from that, dimeritium bomb is pretty useful vs weather tricks.

Thanks for the tips. I like to think I do that with the keep for next round thing, though it doesn't seem to happen that often in regards to picking one of the weaker units (my last game it picked up one of the foglets that need fog though, so it disappeared).

I just got the dimerithium bomb so haven't had chance to use it yet. Not had too much time to experiment yet.

Should I be limiting my deck to a smaller number perhaps?

Smaller is generally better, it leaves you with a better chance of drawing what you need. When I make a new deck I generally start out with 28-32 cards, and then I shave off those that prove themselves less useful until I have ideally 25. After I've done this I usually end up winning way more with said deck.
