I don't feel that it's always mandatory, but actually answering the question; larger mags. You can retreat or go fast to safety to reload, you can jump to a roof, hide in a building, etc. With this game's TTK, if you need to reload in a fight you're a deadman.

Anti Titan weapons? You can make a bit of a case for faster reloads there. MGL/softball enjoy fast reloads.

Gunrunner is literally a crutch for people unable to do parkour properly. You can always fire while wallrunning/slidehopping/sliding/aerial regardless of whether or not you have this perk, so there is no reason to ever take it. PS all of these movement options are faster than sprint.

Tactikill + extended mag is the EVA choice. For Alternator it's Tactikill + reload or extra mag, your decision.

I've just started using Scorch for the first time (from maining Northstar and occasionally using Ion and Ronin) and holy fuck literally 90% of my deaths are to nuke ejects. One boost is fucking bollocks.

Yeah. I hit master on 3 seperate accounts in overwatch; at high MMR it really is very railroad esque. Whichever team executes the strategy their composition is designed around better wins. The game's design severely dampens the impact of individual skill. Plays are more often just about abusing enemy mistakes rather than actually being able to create openings yourself, and like you said, choke points are a big part of that.

A significant majority of the characters in the game are DPS, and yet, if you run more than 2 DPS you're essentially guaranteed to lose. The eb and flow of pushes/defences is almost directly driven by which team has more ultimates available. It's a constant mindgame of trying to bait the enemy into wasting ultimates, then holding onto a snowballing ultimate advantage.

It gets tiresome, and that's not even getting into the horror of wrangling 5 random people into building a halfway decent team when you can't even queue with a specific role.

Honestly whenever I encounter a Toneshitter and they put up their shield like they always immediately do, I just wait it out around a corner or run off altogether. I used to indulge them and rush up to them but I can't be fucked with doing that now. I pretty much just don't engage with Tones anymore, I just poke them now and then if I get the drop on them. Its shield is just inferior because if you can see pilots coming punching is an instagib regardless

Its primary reload is god awful for such minimal damage

And on top of that is suffers from having no dashes and can selfdamage itself

all it can do is that one trick pony combo that barely even works most of the time.

If you use entangled energy you can pop some crits with the Splitter and keep restoring energy for the laser shot. This is basically the best way to play Ion.
