First for how the fuck do I become a hearthperson? The only option for joining a civ is to be a performer. I checked the wiki and everything.
>>
>>159774834
Those things won't deter them. They'll run straight over the traps and right into the animals if that's the shortest path off the map. The entire rest of the labyrinth will be superfluous, you may as well make a straight corridor filled with traps and animals.

If you want them to treat it like an actual labyrinth you'll have to get more creative. Pressure plate controlled doors and bridges that alter paths, deadfalls that force creatures to re-enter the labyrinth at different points, moving water hazards that cut off exits and push creatures onto different paths, innocuous bait animals behind windows to trick them into taking dangerous routes...
Those are just ideas off the top of my head. You get the idea, though. A maze alone isn't going to do what you want it to.
Also, the other anon is right, they'll need a path off map or a visible pathable target to motivate them to run your maze.
>>
>>159776636
The other anon was me but, thanks I will work on this. This is still an early fort (around ~50 dwarves), I'm just trying to lay framework for now. So I'm gonna have to get really elaborate with this thing.
>>
>>159776423
Are you asking someone whose title is Lord or Lady? If not you're asking the wrong person.
>>
>>159776926
Yeah I'm asking a Lady. Still only get the performer option. Does it matter that I'm only in a village?
>>
>>159776797
>The other anon was me
Oh, I see. The thread died while I was typing my reply, I only added that last bit after skimming (poorly, apparently) the rest of the replies.

Well, good luck and keep us updated.
>>
>>159776995
It shouldn't, no. Is the Lady in charge of the site you're at or is she travelling?

Have a pressure plate room with a cat in it to sometimes open up the exit. Make it so its logic is mostly showing closed. They'll random around while the exit is shut
>>
>>159778669
Do you have any reputation at all? Maybe that's a prerequisite now.
>>
>>159781573
Oh, huh, I don't. I'll have to work on that then. How many dead people do I need till I work up a title? 5 I think?
>>
>>159780795
I actually have a plant to rig up pressure plates in various high traffic rooms of my fort to various bridges in the maze (which is now three levels tall in the plans) so that the route to the exit is constantly changing.

Thanks, I really do appreciate the advice you guys are giving.
>>
>>159781929
5 notable kills, but that's not necessarily related to your reputation. Ask people about troubles, pick something nearby and go kill it. Come back and brag about it, and then you'll have a heroic reputation. I would avoid bandits and criminal organizations, they're likely to have friends in town who'll be pissed about it and could muddy things up before you can become a hearthsperson.
>>
>>159782850
plan*
>>
>>159782953
Muddy up as in try to bump me off or cause a loyalty cascade?
>>
>>159783210
You could simultaneously get a reputation as a protector of the weak and a murderer. The latter may negatively affect the Lady's opinion of you. She might let you be a hearthsperson anyway. Accept your request and spit at you in the same turn. She might not, though.
>>
So keep getting an error saying my doctors can't set a bone because they lack a splint. So I go ahead and Q up a splint and once it's gone from my workshop still getting the same issue. So I Q up a half dozen more and doctors still claim to not have any splints. What's the issue? Do they have to be stock piled/storedin the hospital or something?
>>
>>159783632
All right, I'll try it out.
>>
>>159785479
Yes, they have to be stored in boxes and/or bags in the hospital.
>>
>>159785987
Weird. He grabbed anything else he needed right from the stockpile. I guess splints are the odd one out.

Not that it really matters because right now I am trying to drive this fort to FUN and let it crumble. It has lasted far longer then I was expecting already but I don;t want it to limp slowly to it's death. I need to embark in a new area and may as well leave the old one in style.

What's the quickest way to self destruct a fort that does not involve reaching the circus? Want to be done with this fort but I can't just retire it in good consciousness. It has to burn to the ground.

Collapse it on top of itself. Be ready for survivors though who will most likely starve to death in untouched corners.

This.

Just start by digging out the layers above your fort, if you haven't, already. When you've dug out every layer above your fort, you just use channels from above to collapse the topmost soil floor down through the entire fort, leaving the entire thing exposed to the world above.
>>
>>159789690
>>159789426
That may be a problem due to all my dorfs being (intentionally) malnourished, dehydrated and sleep deprived. So could be done but it will be slow going.

An update. I just got a wave of fresh, healthy, useless migrants. So that will sadly prolong the forts existence long after the others die. Damn migrants ruining everything.
>>
>>159790025
Also somehow the majority of my dwarfs are still happy. I have no idea how. I guess all the engravings I put in the dormitory and pub really were worth the trouble. So atleast they got some pretty pictures to watch before they die. I wonder if future dorfs will make carvings of them
>>
Is this what it feels like when you're one of the many workerdorfs trundling around crafting bullshit stone trinkets or slapping gems on shit for caravans when you hear about the caravan coming to bring news of the fort being elevated, and rather than the baroness everyone expected to get the job, the one that bitches and wants people beaten over protectionist trade policies and irrational personality traits is chosen as the new baron?

If there was ever a time to play LCS, this is it, folks.
>>
>>159797380
I never managed to get past the early game in LCS. How do you actually get good at fighting?

Also, which version is best? Toady's last version or the last fan-maintained version?
>>
>>159797630
I've been out of it for a while, but the fan-made I played was superior to the last one Toady put out.

The best way to actually win is to set up different squads and limit knowledge, just like a real life cult. Start your dude as a charismatic guy with a manifesto, recruit 1-3 other charismatic people, have charismatic people recruit squad leaders. Have a squad for fightan, a squad for hackin' (start by stealing credit card numbers until they're really good, then move to hacktivism), and a few rabble squads to run around throwing paint on people. No one but the 1-3 inner party members even know who your main dude is, and make sure all of them are squeaky clean crime-wise. Keep all the squads in separate houses, get a sleeper agent in the police station ASAP to know when raids are coming.

Squads for situational things, like seduction, fundraising, legal activism, etc can be created on a provisional basis.

Your fightan squad will get better from killing people. Start with soft targets (apartments, AM radio, park). You'll lose people, but you can just replace them with veterans/gang members. Natural selection will eventually give you a squad of nigh-unkillable badasses that can take down tanks with assault rifles.

This way, even if you lose your entire organization you'll still have your leader to build things back up from scratch, and can basically win the game through attrition.

And 3 crashes in the dwarf labor menu.

>>
>>159824785
>no one gave a shit
Were you actually around when it went in? A lot of people lost their shit over it; some felt it had no place in the game or that Toady was pandering to the liberals in the playerbase, some felt it didn't go far enough and that Toady should add more genders and sexualities, and some slipped in the shit and got it everywhere over the associated animal sterility bug that Toady never said a peep about until it was fixed nearly 2 years later. Threads were locked, bans were issued. That was just on bay12. The reaction here was more... colorful.
The "Toady is an sjw" meme started there and has continued to this day.
Also, I'm not opining on the feature itself, I'll just note that it wasn't related at all to the update it came with. Variable sexualities were completely isolated from and unrelated to any other feature that was introduced in .40 or any version since.
>>
>>159828001
I don't browse bay12. All I remember is on here people just shitpost about all their animals being asexual on embark. Though there probably was a lot of whining on /v/ but that was around the time I stopped going there.
>>
>>159828001
I personally don't mind it since it follows real life, with small percentages of animals being homosexual and all. Besides, there's nothing stopping people from genociding the gays if they so choose.
>>
Procedurally generated sexualities when
>>
>>159829773
There's nothing stopping you if you use external utilities to identify gay creatures. There isn't any way in the vanilla game to know a creature's orientation until they're in a relationship with another creature. With animals you just have to wait and see if they reproduce and make the best guess about which animals refuse to fuck based on the circumstances of your available population. That's not very hard with domestic animals, but if you catch, say, two jabberers over the course of 5 years in game and they never lay fertile eggs you're just flipping a coin to figure out which one isn't dtf.
>>
>>159825305

The most absurd thing is how extremely discreet homosexuality and asexuality is in the game. No one shoves it in your face. Instead, you have to actively look for it to see it. As for the asexuality, it's so marginal that it doesn't affect the game in any meaningful way.

Also, it wasn't asexuality or homosexuality that prevented dwarves from having children. Instead, it was unwillingness to get married, which is handled by an entirely different mechanic, and unrelated to sexuality.

Is there any benefit to becoming a lord in adventure mode?
>>
>>159830854
except it's not. the raws differentiate between sexuality and willingness to get married. asexuality is caused by the former, although the latter will also determine whether a creature will breed.
>>
>>159831413
Yes, it differentiates between them with a single creature token. The orientation token controls the propensity of a creature to have relationships of any kind with the given gender. Whether or not they're willing to marry and their sexual preference for each gender are both variables of their orientation, generated at the same time by arguments of the same creature token.

Labyrinth-fag back again. My computer needed to be put through a complete restore. Saved my fort on usb but, while I'm waiting I'm trying to think of more ways to make it interesting. My end goal is to have a dungeon/arena where I can hold a battle royale among prisoners and "lucky" gladiators in an ever changing maze. Think hunger games/battle royale only it's one mile beneath the earth in a maze.

Things I'm already including:
-Draw bridge barricades to re-route the exit
-Weapon traps
-Live animals in the corridors
-Three z-level maze
-An "exit" that is a long corridor with traps just in case anyone makes it that far

I was working on water traps, however I lack a river and am draining the nearby swamps into a resevoir for storage.

I also might throw in cheapo weapons at random spots for the runners to use to make it interesting.
>>
>>159833013
The weapons won't do any good. The only way an unarmed creature will equip a weapon in fort mode is by having a labor assigned that uses the weapon (miner/woodcutter/hunter), having it assigned to them from the military screen, or wrestling it away from another creature.
If you're dropping invaders in anyway you could just not disarm some of them.
>>
>>159833439
Oh, alright. I know the invaders would still be armed. I guess I could set up a military squqd and call it "gladiators" or some shit.

It's just those ones have the wrong combination of features, oh and house centipedes! Just triggers the hand-flick+shudder response the way only finding a black widow under a block of wood you're moving, or a recluse on your collar does for me. It seems to me that the renaming interface for taverns (but not temples or libraries) might be broken. Specifically, asking for a random name for a tavern just gives a completely random name, whereas when you create a tavern, temple, or library, or ask for a random name when renaming a temple or library it seems to restrict itself to a certain list of words which are deemed appropriate to the subject.

hi /vg/,

I'm new to DF and I was hoping you could give me some advice, I got my first werecreature earlier today, it was a wereloris so I thought it wasn't a big deal, about 20 minutes later I got an alert saying it had killed one of my hunters and smeared his entrails across the area, it disappeared after that and I didn't have any trouble for a while, and then I got a notification saying my fishmonger is missing,

what's a good way to deal with a werebeast early on before you've got a decent military?
>>
>>159850076
Get a decent military early.

It really doesn't take much. Just a slap a barracks near your entrance, make a wood shield and set a single axedwarf to train at the barracks. A single military dwarf can deal with the majority of early threats even without proper equipment.
>>
>>159850361

thanks anon, but what should I do if he gets bitten by it?
>>
>>159851453
Toss him in a pit, get a new military dwarf.

Or build walls around him. He'll never die, essentially giving you an immortal fortress.

I've posted silly climbing antics from my dwarves before. It's a pretty constant thing in my fort. But somehow they keep coming up with ways to surprise me.
This is Tulon Lertethonul, expert planter. She was on her way to carry a gem from a recent dig site, pictured here to the right, when the floor was dug out from under her. She grabbed onto a pillar and announced her predicament with a dangerous terrain cancellation message. Business as usual, I've seen this a million times. Often when this happens dwarves will choose a ridiculous climbing path to reach an illogical location. Really, anytime it's possible for them to do so. This dwarf, though, literally jumped across a floor that she could have just walked onto in order to reach the pillar she's currently climbing up. The floor is one z below her, and she could climb back down to it at any point. She is, instead, climbing up into my faux support structure to strand herself somewhere that I'll have to build yet another rescue scaffold.
Fuckin dwarves.

What are the pros/cons of assigning dwarves to be scholars or performers for specific locations or for the whole fort?
>>
>>159852904
they don't run around the whole fort

while not a problem on small forts, if you have a multi-layer one your dorfs will spend the majority of their time commuting
>>
>>159839214
In real life this happens often with people getting knocked down and hitting their head on shit etc.
>>
I have somehow managed to cage an owl out of sheer luck. What should I do with it other than butcher it?
>>
>>159852904
You can only assign them to specific locations.
Performers are pretty much like any other dwarf. They'll do any jobs they're assigned labors for like any other dwarf. The only difference is their profession will always say performer, and when they're idle they'll sometimes serve drinks to other idle dwarves (which is supposed to be the tabern keepee's job, but performers do it too). They're not any more likely to perform than other idle dwarves in your tavern. Most of mine watch performances more often than they participate in them.
Scholars spend a lot of time with purple ponder or discuss jobs that can't be interrupted by other work. So don't give them important duties (research hospital was a mistake). They'll occasionally stop long enough to do other work in your fort, but they're the least reliable dwarves you'll have. They take a long time to actually produce books, and those books don't do very much. You'll have some dwarves with a need for abstract thought, and those dwarves will be made happy by reading, so it's useful to have a few on hand. Scholars who study, ponder or discuss topics related to medical skills or mechanics will train those skills as well, but it's slow. It's enough to at least keep the skills from rusting, though. Outside of that libraries are just for fun and flavor.
>>
>>159853113
What I was trying to ask is what the difference is between assigning someone to be a scholar at a library and assigning someone to be a scholar for the whole fort. Sorry I didn't word it well the first time.
>>
>>159852317
No but if you dump a vamp's corpse in the well of your fort you can vampirize your entire settlement when they drink the tainted blood.

When I can do this in adventure mode to random settlements I'm gonna cum buckets.

Ok, since nobody seems to know much about the subject beyond the obvious I decided to test things out a bit. Fortresswide scholars and library specific scholars don't appear to behave significantly differently, at least if you only have one library. In either case they can be assigned and de-assigned freely with no obvious side effects, though the fortresswide scholars require going through the locations screen. Also, I tried assigning a bunch of dwarves to be scholars, and they just kept doing what they had been like nothing had happened, then I assigned one who was hanging out in the library to be a scholar and that one immediately sat down and wrote a book about the fortress, then started pondering historical causation. Eventually the other scholars filtered into the library and started pondering and discussing various things.

He'll probably be along to post his tileset (as well as incorrect opinions regarding the virtues of rectangles) at some point today.

Anyone else disappointed that music didn't play a larger role in the 0.42 releases? We had all these people expecting macross, but the music turned out to be kinda detached from everything except the temples and taverns.

The important thing is that the framework for music has been established. 90% of the content Toady is going to put out for the next decade will be broad stroke, framework releases.
At some point he'll tie music in to more events, or maybe allow us to do it ourselves.

Hi /vg/, newfag here again,

does an alert saying a dwarf has been missing for a week generally mean he's dead?
>>
>>159885802
It always means they're dead. Someone has to see the corpse before they show up as dead, though.
>>
>>159885938

alright, thanks anon, time to make a coffin
>>
so my sword squad of 5 got decimated by a werebull, who my citizens beat to death once he turned human, then a cave croc ate one of my boys. Ive made caskets and I have burial enabled on several dwarves but all the bodies are still just laying around what gives?

also what do i do with the caskets once theyre filled
>>
>>159886496
You have to place coffins and mark them for burial before they'll get used. [b]->[n] then slap it where you want. Then [q]->[b] to enable it to be used for burial.
>>
>>159886496

Only body parts, corpses and rotten food generate miasma. All miasma is is an indicator of rot.

It'll give your dwarves a bad thought, but bad thoughts are completely negligible on their own. Theoretically, it could be the straw that breaks the camels back if the dwarves have been in just abject misery for a few years, but that never happens unless you're actively trying to make it happen.

is there ANY way, any at all, to stop mining jobs being canceled because they are mining a damp or warm area? i'm not talking about the game pausing and centering on the canceled mining designation. i'm talking about the mining designation itself being canceled, so you have to continuously reapply it. i'm digging above the magma sea and it is beyond annoying, since i have to designate each tile over and over again, individually. is there any way around this?

/dfg/ is severely lacking in any material. I say we have a community event to get the creativity flowing and keep us from perishing as a general.
I say we have a tournament similar to the one held on r/dwarffortress a while back seen here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/4im1ek/the_rdwarffortress_gladiator_tournament_i_round_1/
The rules I think could be adapted for us easily enough and as long as whips and scourges are banned from entry I think it would be fun.

otherwise I guess we could have a succession game.

Someone proposes a succession game in /dfg/ every few months. Anonymity/lack of interest kills it everytime. The last time it happened the succession fort actually started, went for 3 turns, and then was promptly forgotten when anon with the turn never came back. The fact that it had even a single turn put it further than any previous attempt, so maybe it's possible.

>Make a tool workshop that lets you unwrap "palettes" of 50 blocks by carrying one large palette object
>Add the option to color the blocks at a dyers workshop by adding pigment
>Let you make an anvil out of iron at a smelter
>Let you make 4 glass, wood or ceramic blocks instead of just 1.

OK, just got back from work. So the general consensus and from what >>159913519
said there is not much interest in a succession game. That's fine. I really do want to just try and do the tournament though. I will look through the rules that went along with the r/dwarffortress tournament post and adapt them for us. I will give it a couple of days after I announce it to allow submissions. Against my better judgement (unless you guys want to be namefags) I will allow anonymous submissions and fighter updates.

again the link to the other tournament I keep talking about which is an excellent read is
https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/4im1ek/the_rdwarffortress_gladiator_tournament_i_round_1/

and the rules for it are found here

As for the guy who keeps posting about his succession game on bay12forums. I appreciate the offer but, I want to do this for the benefit of /dfg/. You guys may be assholes from time to time but, you guys are alright.

If anyone wants to help me adapt the rules that would be much appreciated and any ideas to throw in would be swell.
>>
>>159918843
I didn't mean to suggest that you shouldn't try a succession. I think whoever organizes it will need to take one for the team and wear a trip (you're halfway there) for succession fort related posts, and post an email for other anons to sign up at. And then if anon fucks off with the save and never returns, you have an email to reach him at and a list of nexts to fall back on. Might not get enough takers to make a serious go at it, but if you're comfortable wearing a trip and posting an email you could try.
>>
>>159920281
I was thinking about that. I mean yeah that's what I'm worried about, people losing interest.

We have the traffic for it even for a small 5-7 man succession fort. I just worry about flakes. With the tournament though there isnt a long term commitment and everyone including lurkers could submit a fighter easily. Anyone that doesn't update their fighters if they advance just gets counted as no contest in my book and the tournament goes on, simple as that.
>>
>>159920950
Fair enough.

So would participants need to trip to post/update their gladiators? Or email? Just use the honor system? I would submit a gladiator if either of the latter two were the case, but I don't want to trip.

Are you volunteering to arenamaster?

Alright, after a night of thinking I am pleased to announce the /DFG/ Gladiatorial Tournament. Based off of /u/BritishBean's tournament on the dwarf fortress subreddit which in turn is based off rules made by Vox Nihili from the SomethingAwful forums.

I will be taking submissions via email for 5 days until November 16th. I don't anticipate many submissions so the amount of combatants I'm accepting is limited to 16 any others I get after those first 16 will be put on a reserve list to be used for a future tournament. If however I get 32 applicants (again unlikely) I will raise the combatant limit to include them.

Email: [email protected]

Rules (adapted for /dfg/): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1il8e8uo9bgtNBU0udCetOHesN4mkkDCVB_z6zdMgReY

I will try and answer any questions but, I will be off from now until around 2pm est.

Can't really say just from looking at the surface. A lot of what determines whether or not an embark is good is determined from the embark screen, and a lot of it is determined by what you find underground. The appearance of the surface is a very small factor in overall embark quality.

newfag question again!

I got my first elf caravan today, everything they had was shit,

do they always bring garbage? every other caravan I've gotten was loaded with good shit
>>
>>159950632
Yes. They're elves. Only thing useful they bring are the tamed rare animals. That's literally the only useful thing they bring
>>
>>159950632
The cloth, animals, and food can be nice. Besides that it's garbage though
>>
>>159950632
They used to bring you exotic drinks, but they stopped as of version 0.40. They still bring exotic fruits, though, which can be pretty comfy(even if it's mostly flavour text for your food stockpiles).

They also bring exotic animals. Some of these may be war trainable, but I wouldn't actually use them in war, considering how weak all animals are in the current version. I mostly buy rare animals from the elves and put them somewhere safe, in order to satisfy my hoarding behaviour.

Lastly, elves also bring clothes that your dwarves can wear. SInce elven civs often different clothing types than dwarven ones, buying some elven clothes is a nice way to get a bit of diversity in your fort.
>>
>>159950548
I actually don't care if you don't tip. We really do make enough as it is don't let anyone tell you otherwise because they are required by law to make up for any wages not earned in tips up to the minimum wage.

after you've selected where you want to put the coffin, press 'x' to get a complete list of all available coffins instead of just sorting them by material and quality.

since the names of the engraved dorfs are on their slabs, this will let you put the correct slabs next to the correct coffins.

My fortress was ambushed by dwarf spearman and dwarf axeman. I killed them 3 years ago and to this day their names have flashing colors on the deceased unit screen.

My problem is, they dropped some stuf on death, but nobody can pick them up cause it was the items are being owned by the slain dwarves. I tried burying them but to no avail.
>>

> My problem is, they dropped some stuf on death, but nobody can pick them up cause it was the items are being owned by the slain dwarves.
Unforbid them. If doesnt help, dump, then unforbid.

This is some "miasma feels tunnels"-tier shit.
You cant bury non-citizens. Atom smash them.
>>
>>159949012
Some gems have amazing material value, so artifacts made of them can be really valuable. Especially if the dwarf uses several gems.
To encourage good material picks, use all the shit gems first and save some of the good ones for moods.
>>
>>159950632
Besides all the stuff mentioned, elves can bring wood, depending on how many trees your site has. Or possibly on how many logs you have stockpiled. Useful if you've embarked on a glacier or something.
>>
>>159955154
>tomorrow

>>
>>159961018
I doubt the site as a whole will be moving to double the chan, but I could see it happening to us

We have enough unique posters for a thread, but with the lack of steady new content it's hard to keep the thread bumped. Most people who are interested in DF post on bay12 for a reason, it's a slow game. 2x probably already has a discrete /dwarf/ board if I had to guess, though I haven't looked.

I dunno. I'm not trying to shill, but the bumps sure are coming fast and hard these days.
>>
>>159962482
It's how many logs you have. They don't have to be stockpiled. They only count unforbidden logs, so you can trick them into bringing more wood by forbidding your stock of logs right before the caravan arrives.
>>
>>159961871
>> I tried burying them but to no avail.
>This is some "miasma feels tunnels"-tier shit.

I mean that I buried them but their stuff is still unpickable.
I tried to unforbid and autodump in a different place, didn't work.

Just started in a heavily forested area. There's a bunch of huge sand walls that lead to fruit -bearing trees on higher Z-levels. Is it possible for me to build above ground stairs for me to get to these places? Or should I just let them use the slopes?
>>
>>159965176
The sand shelf won't collapse or anything, if that's what you're worried about, but you can indeed build aboveground stairs (b+C).
>>
>>159962965
We would fit much better there, honestly. They're already filled with generals simply because it's rewarding for a small and solid community. The difference between /dfg/ and other fast moving generals is not content or discussion, but shitposting. Most threads up right now are borderline circlejerks. Also, on cripplechan /dfg/ could actually grow and attract new players, since even slow moving threads are stamped right on the front page nowadays.

There's a really huge con though, should we mess up the transition (like always), then we'd split the community and end up killing both. God help us is the last standing bastion is Bay.

I'm not really worried, I just thought the announcement was funny. It was all part of the plan. This door-cage trap-door design was intended specifically for baiting and trapping desirable building destroyers.
Iron Men are pretty damn rare, but I've had 4 of them in this fort, which is exactly 80% of the Iron Men I've seen since I started playing. One was in the first year before I revealed the caverns, I only know about it because my blacksmiths occasionally make a statue of it slaughtering rat men. One died fighting a forgotten beast. One entered on the only part of cavern 3 that doesn't have a path to the rest of the cavern. I was beginning to despair of catching one, and then this dude comes along. I'm pretty damn excited.

Ancient bug. Part of the issue is that the distinction between aboveground/subterranean is what determines where a dwarf can clean, but that's only part of it. Read the comments in the bug report I linked, it lays out pretty well the very specific circumstances under which dwarves can be motivated to clean.

I've had this happen disturbingly often lately. I think it's because they lose one of their wagons, and have too much shit to haul without it, so they can never leave. Deconstructing the depot seems to fix it.

With 4 days left I feel it's time for an update.

Recap: /dfg/ has become severely stagnant lately and I thought it would be good to have a community event to keep our general fresh. That's where I had the idea to hold a gladiatorial tournament featuring fighters submitted via email by you all fighting in the Arena for the title of Champion of /dfg/.

So far only two fighters have been submitted and another is pending. I need at least 16 to go along with this tournament and it would be really good if we could get 32 (though that seems unlikely at the moment).

The rules and how to create a combatant can be found here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1il8e8uo9bgtNBU0udCetOHesN4mkkDCVB_z6zdMgReY

The email for submitting combatants is: [email protected]

Please submit a fighter, I will be keeping the registration open until 11/16/2016 after which it will be closed. However, if less than 16 fighters are submitted I may keep it open for 2 more days.

The world I was playing on in 40.01 had one major continent and one large island in the southeast corner which had a human civilization on it which so far as I could tell had no interaction with any other civilizations. However, if I recall correctly, my first werebeast attack was from a werebeast who had come from that island, and my fort was inland, in the southwest quarter of the map on the main continent. So either there was a bug back then or werebeasts, if not other creatures, can wander much more freely than I'd have expected.

Used to be xcompmgr for compositing, the guy who wrote it ended up spinning out compton recently when shit started getting annoying with Compiz and other compositors not playing well with nvidia and intel vidya.

The shit is great man, cleaned up my video tearing, got muh transparencies back, check out the arch linux compton threads for the specific tricks to get it fitted in with your hardware/wm/etc. I just slapped the line they suggested into the end of my /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and turned off the "start compositor when KDE starts" box, pow, gold.

That is half true. Computers are going to have more and more cores and CPUs will ressemble nothing of a CPU of the past. The systems are going through a differentiation phase because the hassle of parallelism is smaller than the hassle of doubling clock and increasing power consumption (and heat) by 10. But yeah, toady needs to learn to code or learn to socialize and hire a decent guy to help him.

Half-day update: Only one more combatant has been added to the roster since my last post at midnight (though I guess thats my own fault since I work 2nd shift and am a severe night owl, I'm like the only one here from 10pm-2am). Again I really do urge people to at least try to make a combatant, even lurkers who don't post. If we can pull this off it might help the general immensely.

I had fine tuned my desktop layout, sensors, clocks, calendars, all my program links, the colors and icons and window decorations were all exactly how I wanted them, I had long since gotten rid of the tearing issue which linux users are very familiar with fighting due to nvidia fuckery... and then the most recent update to kwin or plasma screwed me over so it wouldn't go past the splash screen/progress bar when you log in, kicking back to the user select/login instead. Couldn't find anything to fix it except cutting out damn near the entire display stack due to all the dependencies and shit preventing a simple rollback from finishing. A couple years of tweaks and settings and such to get it all maximum cozy, still rebuilding but it's close enough to do... for now.

Rules dont give any info on how does size affect point creation

I should be able to create a master gobbo slasher that, with some luck, should be able to win some hobo elephant man
The tournament must be somewhat equilibrated, thats what I mean

the notion that /pol/ brought memes into the white house is just a meme

sure, we saw a lot of pepes in mainstream media during the electoral campaign, but those were just flavouring for the most part.

and of course, now that he's finally into the white house, all the meme magic is gone. he has totally conformed to the policies of the rest of his party, he has admitted that obama care wasn't so bad after all AND he admitted that he was just joking about the wall. furthermore, liberal leaders in europe are beginning to agree that trump wasn't so bad after all.

TL;DR: despite all the hype, trump was neither the fascist that the liberals feared nor the redpill that the alt right hoped for. he's just an ordinary moderate, potentially left-leaning, republican.
>>
>>160027684
Liberalism in the rest of the world does not equal to what americans call liberalism. Atleast not what /pol/tards call liberalism.

I know. by liberalism, I referred to the actual liberal and social democratic leaders in europe(there is no denying that social democracy is a form of liberalism). in any case, at least here in sweden it seems like the the politicans are warming up to trump. during the election, they were mostly worried that he'd stand in the way of TTIP, but now that trump lost his edge, he'll probably change his stance on that topic as well.

just no senpai. Look up videos about his interviews from the 80's to now. He was/is a close to earth-redpilled guy about a lot of things, and know how things work
Sure, he has boasted to gain attention from people so he could be elected, but that doesn't mean that he doesnt have plans for the future
Politicians not flipping the fuck out when he came elected is mainly because of diplomacie and realism. They know that complaining publically about him they can't gain much, but lose a lot

We could add some some more rng fun to it, and invest some of the extra points in a roll dice to gain some type of 'mutation' to give you certain benefits

You know, winning a round, and knowing that you are gonna fight some really hard guy, the one person that sends the gladiator would be allowed to transform his whole armor back to points, and use them to try and gain mutations

If we put some effort in this, we could arrange and put 'prices' on mutations and such

This would add a whole new layer of complexity to the tournament, so try to consider it
Just a thought
>>
>>160048559
maybe add some roleplaying tone to it, and let the 'Dungeon master'(the tournament master) decide what transformations are allowed and which aren't

Like a human transforming his arm in a potent bone needle that inflicts a severe penetration atack, more suitable to certain enemies than others, but looses grasping and wielding abilities
The dungeon master would allow only fun/practic mutations to ocurr

Well that banner/infograph of a condensed version of the rules would be great for starters. Nothing fancy just, something easier on the eyes and postable on the general. My shitty paint skills only go so far but, it needs to include the basic rules, the races, equipment, and skills lists.

Im mostly busy updating the doc with character info and adding the combatants to my own creature_dfgtournament.txt. After im done with that Im thinking about making a comprehensive list of all the beastmen races and their point values so I can stop being asked, thing is I want to make that list fair and their are things that need to be taken into consideration like flight and races that have the NOSTUN and NOPAIN tokens like all arachnid men.

Your taverns in adventurer mode don't work right yet in that they don't "inform" the rest of the world to come visit, next time I get in a hacky-scripty mood I'll have to see if I can figure out what flags and fields need to be changed to fix that.

You CAN take over an npc Tavern keeper and start working, people will place orders, you can run and fill them, and holy fuck is it exhausting.

Besides them being bros with all the info, they are the hardest working motherfuckers ever, there's a reason I've got a straight up rule: you punch a tavern keeper, I take your fucking facial features outside and burn them, if the bleeding stops when I get back you can live, otherwise it's not my problem.

A large amount of the stuff that makes DF interesting relies on how long you've been playing. Early on there's no much variation on the surface level, but the longer the fort/world goes on the more interesting stuff can happen and more variation becomes obvious in subsequent forts.

Midnight update

Today was a pretty successful day in terms of submissions. With a total of 10 submissions now only have 6 more slots to fill before the tournament can commence.

I'd like to give a special shoutout to 9dots for the amazing artwork of the combatants currently on the roster he posted. I will make sure to post it to a art tab on the main document later on tonight.

Keep submitting combatants because even if we hit the 16 submission mark those that get put on reserve will be have first slots in any upcoming tournaments.

A mace is a weapon without elegance. It literally is "eh Bashem lads!"
Something about it is appealing and appalling to me. I don't think I have a single image set in the middle ages where a mace is not present even though historical documents say they made up less then 5% of weapons in the high middle ages, and the chain and mace/flail makes up even less then that if they even existed.
So that I guess makes it pretty autistic.

How do you free slaves?
>>
>>160079385
>>160079467
Actually, slaves are pretty rare. Dwarves, elves and goblins never practice slavery(gobs take children prisoner, but that is not the same thing as slavery).

The only civ that occationally practice slavery is the human one, but that assumes that their randomly generated values allow it.

Basically, the RNG decides whether a human civ practices slavery or not. If they do, you'll find slaves on several of their sites.

MagicaVoxel is pretty easy to use for some quick bedroom design.

Pic related, doing large luxury bedrooms for everyone.

>>160084226
Conquering civs do it, but you're probably right because I usually see clusters of towns with slaves and then none.

>Little bit of recap. for those that didn't read the other posts of this semi-autobiographic story

You are Lembuk the semi-elk-man, a young elk with a small percentage of human dna, which grants you the power to have a functional human mind, although you cant use it to directly communicate with your friends
How you came to be is a mistery better left apart, for the sake of not including zoophilia in the story
You are on a quest to pass on your genes to a new generation of eventually-less-intelligent-hibrids-because-you-feel-atracted-to-normal-elks-so-your-human-heritage-is-gonna-die-on-two-generations-or-so elks
To do so, you packed with your whole tribe's males in search of female elk pussy
In only three posts, various anons have managed to decimate this number to only two males alive (procreating is dangerous yo'), you and Verliko, who seems to have taken a part on the death of your friends, although you arent that sure about what to believe, for various reasons

Alright, that's done, now where did we leave the story?
>A.Run with Verliko to the horrible forest from where you came from, hoping that its not an ambush, since you are not sure if you can trust him at all, after him not stopping your friends from dying
>B.Stay, and let go who used to be your friend, and who stopped you from seeing your pals die, and face a Woman Wizard who may want to kill you
Oh right. Well. Second chance buddies, do not fuck up now. Who knows, maybe the lasts activities on this general might affect the outcome of the story...

Oh, no problem dude
As you mentioned duendes, I thought you spoke spanish
Its the first time someone says spanish and not mexican to me, its a weird feeling
>>
>>160089019
I never thought about that, but as a Texan I always think of it as spanish or espanol (can't do the little enye tilde) and don't think I've ever heard someone say they speak mexican, hell even jokingly I'd say I speak taco or something.
>>
>>160087623
A. Verliko the shit out of my face.
>>
>>160089694
Well, thank you
In spain we kinda like mexico, we have quite a story together, but most of us dont think that what they talk is 'spanish'
If you are interested, to us, mexicans speak an arcaic type of spanish, with weird misuses of words and stuff
Look, grab/ catch in spanish is 'coger'
'Coger' in mexicans means 'fuck'
At first, we didnt know why did they all giggle at turists...

I like how theres so many small combatants in an arena.
>>
>>160090582
in the future we should have some sort of 1 big creature vs multiple small creatures battles.
Of course give points accoringly so it would be fair.
>>
>>160089901
Whoa, you guys don't do the ⟨x⟩ at all. (/te'has/) (/me'hi'ko/) must sound weird as shit, but I learned 'chingar' instead of 'coger' as fuck/screw, but a lot of my spanish came from taking the stuff I only picked up because we had a hot little 20-something latina for a spanish teacher and time spent framing houses with a crew including several mexican dudes.
>>
I think Sten is going to wreck shit.
What's the deal with wounds, tourneyanon? As you are writing unique raws for each combatant and then creating them anew for each bout, that means no ongoing damage between fights, right?
But what if a plucky kobold dies at the hands of Almighty Sten, but manages to remove his arm? How does that work?
>>
>>160090897
Wizards and healers, is how they justified it in the reddit tournement. Winners, even if they had their guts hanging out, came back fully healed.
>>
>>160090897
>>160091073
I mean, I like the idea of several medics 'curing' a broken spine after victory so the winner doesnt die out
But I also like the idea of scars and stumps in veteran players, adds taste to the whole thing
>>
>>160091351
I don't have much experience with the arena, is it possible to add such injuries to spawns?

this is pure asumption but
You can use dfhack on the arena right?
Any of that magic cant be used to that?
