The nail rifle takes fabrication one and marksmanship 2. Craft a sling, slingshot, or self bow and go plink from max range. Read after each zombie and you'll have it in a couple hours. Which by the way if you're so inclined to put a couple decayed or fat zombies into a bedroom with good placement you can go empty 130 focus twice a day at them to cheaply get your marksmanship to 7 in addition to looting first contacts so you can hit stuff like turrets later.

Cooking oil lets you make some nutrition dense foods. If you're not in a pinch, make thyme oil and use it as a disinfectant for healing or craft bandages and first aid kits from it.
Vinegar's one of the most volume dense preservation methods. Once you hit cooking 6/7 you can pickle instead of smoke. It's easy to make, just make fruit wine must from your fruit finds, ferment it, then ferment it again into vinegar. It's also useful in the pre-vehicle era as you can use it to craft unlimited batteries
Bleach and ammonia you use for misc chems. Later in the game you'll use a fuckton of it for mutagen serums and purifier. Since I am fiddling with PCB's item gen, I've been thinking: why not allow libraries to read scrolls for berserkers? Cost based on scroll, and just the sort of related to item-manips.

I also made Black Market items scale with player level, kinda, up to 75. Temples rarely stock !curing and !healing, too. And alchemists have potions of speed. Prices are bad, though.

why is fucking crawl so inclined towards melee (or rarely, shooting) to the degree that even an attempt at a pure caster basically needs to melee a lot in the early/midgame? I find this repulsive. I want to only use movement and spells but nooooo, this game makes that horribly inefficient and minimally incentivized such that you basically have to use some melee and/or stabbing to extend your mana pool, get freexpee, etc or else consider your game a dumb conduct. Even fucking Sif and Vehumet accept kills (Sif accepting kills at all wtf btw) from nonspell damage. Meanwhile in Angband a mage can run around wielding two shields for the stats and AC all game and instead actually do magey things like cast spells and use wands without ever doing the plebeian work of hitting a thing with a stick. /rant

I think I've finally figured out what makes a game truly "roguelike-y" to me: level connectedness.

Basic procedural generation creates little pockets of important space, and if those pockets don't blend together, the dungeon or whatever ends up feeling like a "theme park" where you cruise from one point of interest to another. Infra Arcana addresses this in a very simple way: sound. The chance that something will be attracted by noise is very high in IA compared to other games, which means that at any given time, more of the level is relevant to you.
