It is now November. An unbidden chill steals over the forest. The boughs lie heavy with frost, condemned to an early winter. Gaurach-Dúin in the tongue of the Asrai, it is a time of stillness and a time of dread. The fey spirits to whom the protection and provision of the Asrai is entrusted are consigned to an unshakable somnolence, unable to fulfill their sacred trust. The Wood Elves, deprived of their sturdiest companions, are forced to toil for themselves. It is the final horror. Some kinbands retreat deep into the roots of the wood, unable to countenance debasing labor and the necessity of work. In the halls beneath the Oak of Ages, The Sisters of Twilight nestle close to one another. Many are the Asrai who join their Dryad sisters in pursuit of warmth and the long sleep that stretches across seasons.

But the forest has need of its guardians, and will not abide dereliction of duty. Naieth preaches dire auguries in the early coming of the Season of Stillness. To those who have known Gorposting, Goblins and embarrassing rats, a still greater terror lurks. A great sorcery wrought in rain-cursed Albion will thrust the Asrai to the fore of the outside world's unsightly struggles and toil; The strange world of wageslavery can be ignored no longer.

I just want some straight-up opinions, /twg/

Is Total Warhammer good in comparison to the rest of the series? Does the setting and fantasy theme work well? Varied factions and all that? I've played some mods like Third Age for Medieval 2 and enjoyed that a lot. It's been a long time since I've played a TW game and I'm considering picking up Warhammer.

Keep in mind, I'm really not picky with Total War. I enjoyed Rome 2 even when everyone else shat on it at release, I enjoyed Empire and Napeleon a lot, Shogun 2 was fine to me although I didn't play it much, etc. Ignoring the small stuff, would you say Warhammer is a fun, well-made addition to the series?

Were you under a rock when Chaos got units for free, or just blatantly ignoring it?

Warriors of Chaos and Beastmen will not be getting PAID DLC for DLC. In other words they will likely get new units for free. For Beastmen they will more than likely get some free units and their third lord when the Wood Elves hit.

And no shit The White Dwarf is an example of powercreep. We've already known powercreep was happening since Vlad and Ghorst. It's not like you're saying anything particularly enlightening. As long as it's free it is fine.

Now the real question is if CA is willing to go back and make the other Lords more interesting. Which they haven't given a straight answer to yet.

If you don't have any artillery pieces, siege engines, or certain monstrous creatures (I'm not sure what the qualifications are there), you can't attack a walled city, so you have to build siege engines first.

I would be liking this chaos campaign a lot more if there wasn't a constant parade of empire captains killing 2000-3000 favour's worth of units every single turn.
Also, this is what happens when the only units you have that are capable of catching the enemy's skirmish infantry can't actually fight the skirmish infantry.

That's a new horde that I'm babysitting with the main horde that's mostly chaos warriors, chosen and a bunch of other random stuff. I wanted to actually try and get a decent number of hordes rather than relying on one or two the whole game, but it's taking a while to get even a single new one up to scratch.

You don't need more than two hordes desu. By the time my third horde was formidable I had beaten the LC objectives. For your baby horde just park it next to a minor settlement and sack it every turn until you max out your growth, then I suggest beefing up your chaos warriors in the red skill tree.

I agree, I just usually finish all the objectives before I unlock all the units. The chaos campaign really needs work IMO. Something like faster horde growth or reduced upkeep so you can use more stuff in a shorter amount of time. I don't like extending the length of my campaigns just so I can try out a few new units, I just save that for custom battles.

Problem is that the chaos campaign isn't particularly flexible. The most efficient way is one or two stacks going for long victory by turn 100 with shaggoths, giants, chosen and aspiring.

Definitely start with the base game. While Fall of the Samurai is great, you can really only appreciate it once you get a decent amount of time in the base game.

Also, I think the blood path is worth it if you can get it cheap too. I still think it is one of the better ones.

Okay, I'm not sure if this is an actual issue or not, but has anyone noticed something wrong with knockbacks lately?

It could just be I never noticed this, but every since the King and the Warlord DLC I feel like the knockbacks have gotten pretty outrageous. Things are getting flung farther than they used to, and I've seen Chosen and Aspiring Champions getting tossed to the ground by empire swordsman which I don't recall happening much at all previously.

Is there some bug I'm not aware of or something?

I don't understand why CA insists on doing way over-the-top animations for their formation fighting.

fighting in a formation doesn't allow you to do all the wide dramatic swings all the soldiers seem to do, and most real sword fights end within one or two swings.

It's almost like CA doesn't realize that you can block a sword and throw a stab at the same time, instead of going back and forth between blocking a swing and throwing your own swing.

They'd save so much money on mocap and animation if they just incorporated realistic fighting instead of this hollywood-esque bullshit

When playing as Grombrindal, I noticed that almost all of his blue skills don't only improve himself, but improve the entire faction as a whole. Increased replenishment for the whole faction, additional global recruitment slot, reduced cost of recruitment of soldiers for everyone. Why is he so OP and how OP will the next promotional Lord be?
