This does not happen unless people specifically have a fit about the thread being slightly early. If no one cares or notices then the old thread dies as normal and the new one continues as normal.

I don't think it happens in this general but I have years of experience of this happening in others, to the point that when this does happen, the people who get upset about early threads specifically keep on bumping the old thread to the front page just to get the mods attention so they can be vindicated when both threads are made and cause a mess of everything.
