It also makes it slower for me to read a game. A simple nukige like Musumama took me about a week to fully read, and that game is pretty short.

For comparison, Tsukiyo no Miura was a little longer than Musumama and took me nearly a month. I might be a little quicker now, but not much.

Imo the hardest part about reading in Japanese early on is being able to quickly recognize kanji in the VN font size, which is fairly small.

So I was thinking about picking up Umineko on steam but I'm under the impression it's only the first of two games and that there's currently no timeframe on the sequel dropping as well. What would my options be for playing it if I decided to play the first part, fan translation?

Once upon a time, a couple years ago, we only got like one major translation every month or couple of months. /vn/ was essentially just a giant book club where they talked about whatever that release was, died once discussion of that vn petered out, then came back whenever something new came out. I know that I sure as fuck wasn't interested in Hoshimemo, but it was literally all /vn/ talked about for like a month and a half, so if I wanted to be able to participate in the thread at all I had to read it.

However, now, we've reached the point where there are so many translations coming out that it isn't really feasible to read absolutely everything. So even though there's more to read there's much less overlap in what people are reading. Essentially, despite the overall number of vns going up, the number of people reading each one is going down. This means that, since less people are reading, there's much less discussion.

I read the entirety of Umineko as it came out and I feel like I'm being generous when I give it a 4/10. It's a convoluted mess that reads like it was written by a 12 year old. The Japanese fanbase refuses to so much as give Ryuukishi the time of the day nowadays for good reason. Honestly, I find the extent to which the western fanbase is obsessed with Umineko to this day to be frightening in a sense. I have no idea how you guys can drone on about it day after day nearly six years after the final episode was released; Ryuukishi is a hack who has no idea how to actually tell a story that does anything except continually bait the reader with red herrings and empty promises of greater themes. He's been like this since Higurashi and will never improve, either on a technical level or as a storyteller in general. Like I said, almost no Japanese fan cares about Ryuukishi nowadays, and it's more than people just being pissed off about episode 8 of Umineko (people were pissed off about Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi long before then, anyway). It's because they've had enough exposure to him to see through his tricks and stop falling for his brand of spectacle and sophistry. And yes, his terrible, childish text is part of the problem too - there are parts of Higurashi that have such embarrassingly poor writing that they're used as copypasta on 2ch.

I hated MYTH, but it seems I'm in the minority judging by VNDB votes. You can play it and form your own opinion. MYTH's ending has one of the problems people have with Umineko's except much worse though.

Fata Morgana is great but whether you like the first three doors is down to the individual. It gets really good later on. Can't go wrong here.

It's a good series that completely falls apart in the later episodes. It presented itself as a mystery, but in fact it's not, and it actually actively insults you for treating it as one, and the mystery aspects of the story are resolved really poorly. This means that all the people who were really into Umineko when it was coming out dislike it, because all the time they spent trying to solve the mystery, debating and speculating was essentially wasted. If you just read it in one go like a lot of the newer people do, you don't get nearly as attached to the mystery because you don't spend nearly as long with it, so the terrible resolution in the later parts doesn't bother you as much. Essentially, it's a novel where the more time you put in the less you like it.

This is wrong. The goats scene was not insulting the reader, in fact both Dlanor and Will are seen respecting the goats, they admire the goats for putting up a good fight and talked about how great it was to battle mysteries out like this. Umineko only shits on the people that don't try to solve the mystery, the exact opposite of what you claim. That's the only type of goat that gets shit on by Will.

As for the mystery aspect resolution being poor, that's pretty much a matter of opinion. I've seen a ton of criticisms for umineko's culprit, and I've come to my own conclusions about it and I think the culprit and mystery was resolved fairly well.

The worst part is that after saying "fuck you none of you deserve to solve my perfect mystery", R07 has the balls to try to insult people who go "if you're not going to give us the answer then what's the point in trying to solve the mystery?" (an opinion that he himself once explicitly stated). It's one of the most hateful things I have ever seen an author do, it's pretty clear he fucking hates his audience at that point.

Fata Morgana deals with somewhat similar subjects, but is all around cleaner, tighter, and classier than Umineko ever was.
There's a big mansion and there's a witch in it who wants revenge. Western aesthetics predominate. The plot is chock full of mystery and the reader unravels it through a progression of mindfuckery that is often tied to the unique strengths of the visual novel There is a focus on identity, particularly near the end where a particular character has to deal with issues of a physiological nature.
They're far from exactly alike, but you can see shades of similarity in the context, even if the ambience is utterly different.

MYTH is just far better at metanarrative cuntbaggery than Umineko is.

I was so inspired by the premise of Divi-Dead I researched ancient grimoires including the infamous Black Bible.
