People really tend to overexaggerate how easy learning a language is. Thanks to tools one can study while reading at an early level. That's great. I have no problem with it. I don't know much about the difficulty of Dies irae, besides what the memes say, since I've never really read it, but I've seen that the general consensus is that Dies irae is hard to translate, but not necessarily too hard to read. I've seen people livestreaming Dies irae and it honestly doesn't look too bad, I think the main hurdle would have to be some of the vocab and long bits of narration. But that's something that comes up with most VNs anyway, so it would just have to be a manner of getting used to reading lots of text without burning out.

I translated two whole routes of Sansha Mendan which equated to 13,000~ lines consisting largely of porn. It's hard to say how much exactly was porn but I remember one of the 3P scenes lasting 1,800 on it's lonesome. It's no exaggeration to say the majority was porn. So I have some insight on the subject of requiring thick skin to translate porn.

In my honest opinion, I don't think porn is too bad with the right mindset. The moans were tedious to type out when it was several lines in a row, and thinking of synonyms for "breasts" and "penis" was a real pain (there was seriously like 10 different words for "penis" used at least once), but really it was no worse than translating plain narrative text. The worst part of translating straight up porn is the constant erection, on some days I had a full mast raised for five or so straight hours. That has a pretty hefty psychological burden, and if you go ahead and wank it out, you loose a certain manic enthusiasm for the eros of the text, in my experience anyway. That's a pain.

However, none of that compares to the translating the writing style itself which has no relation to the porn. All the SFX, moans, synonyms; none of it came close to the simple difficulties of translating Japanese to English, the same difficulties you'd face translating a moege SOL scene, a chuunige battle scene, any scene written in Japanese. Whether I was translating porn or not didn't really have an impact on how I tired I felt or how bored I was or any of that. To me, there's no big difference whether it's porn or normal text.

Luckily, I may even be able to visually demonstrate this. Take a look at this album:

Yuuna's route author in SM writes sentences regularly twice as long as the others and almost always in an obnoxious structure to translate. THAT hurt WAY more than all the porn scenes combined.
