Best weapon in its respective class?

ds2 did a good job by branching off. Ds3 should have done the same, instead of the half-assed bloodborne and ds1 mash we got.

DaS4 is anything but inevitable. Now that From is out of contract, they're free to make another Souls or Soulslike that doesn't involve them with the pile of shit that is Bamco publishing. Additionally, they're owned by Kadokawa now, so Kadokawa would have to be convinced that the "Dark Souls" name is so much more important than just the "From Software" name on a new title that it's worth splitting the profits with Bamco, and Bloodborne would go to show that it really isn't. They can launch something like "Dragon Souls" and start with fresh canon, which seems to be where Miyazaki thrives, and the community is used to shuffling names around enough that it will sell with no trouble.

Dark Souls 4, if it happens, will be Bamco getting some lackey developer to puppet around a limp corpse of a series and if they do it, I hope it flops. Bamco deserves nothing further from the series.

I haven't got very far in DS3 so I have no idea what it is there. In Lovecraft it's just a simple idea of the deep sea. Horrible, unimaginable thing lurk there that warp reality around them and drive anyone that looks at them insane. Not quite. When the Souls format is working at its best is when the oppressive solitude and darkness of the setting is contrasted with the hope and strength of will of its inhabitants. The fact there are so many kindhearted and driven characters despite how bad things are going for them is a lot of the endearing appeal of the cast. If everything were dark and depressing in every interaction, it would just wear thin.

A good Souls adaptation could only be one that is capable of striking a balance and understanding the levity necessary for making the setting work.

Also why the buckler? The recovery frames are complete garbage, you're just asking to get backstab punished by anyone who's good (which, granted, most people aren't, but still...). I've gotten to the point where people try so hard to parry my spears and thrusting swords that I've given up entirely on parrying just because hornet backstab shieldpokes are so easy to do consistently and there's no downside (if you don't have a shield they can just R1 spam into your face, with a shield they can't).

I've put hundreds of hours into pontiff duels before the Arena even existed and now all of my characters are made for invasions at different SL's, and even if they're a meme they always carry at least 1 weapon that can deal with ganks.

So considering I'm now used to always having half the estus and being outnumbered 1v3 and still winning, as well as always spending all of my souls so I don't give a shit if I lose an invasion... I happily oblige invaders. I don't even heal against them, it's fun.

Fair enough. Honestly these days I just prefer using a BK Shield (or LK Shield which I tried but medium shield parry frames are basically unusable) and hornet backstabbing people. With the BK Shield you can even still use the crow quills or swordspear's WA, it's great once you git gud at stamina management and learn how to drop your guard between R1's of stuff like greatswords so you can regain some stamina between hits.

What reward would you even need? Covenant items aren't even that difficult to get and most of the covenant rewards are useless. By the end of the game you can buy all of the upgrade materials except for slabs, which you get plenty of in a single run and can just make a backup save if you want to test out different weapons at +10. Unembered is fine since everyone is equal in that regard. Medals are retarded I'll grant you that, they should have a leaderboard of some sort although on PC I'm sure it'd just get raped by cheaters.

You PvP for it's own sake. It's fun to fight other people instead of the AI. It's also a lot more convenient and you can do team battles instead of just 1v1's now, I've actually been enjoying 2 man brawl a lot since you get a full 5 minutes to test out whatever setup you want, it's just just one-and-done. The Crusaders vs. Bloodshades 3v3 stuff has basically just been moved to Arena.

It's like saying you hated playing Goldeneye 007 as a kid with your friends because you didn't get any rewards for it. Makes no sense. Or maybe you're one of those spoiled young millenials who needs a "trophy" for everything you do?

DS2 and DS3 failed to emulate DS1 by turning bonfire into teleporters from the get go and by adding hub cities.

The first DS1 playthrough felt like an amazing journey because you were all alone and the world actually looked like its dying. DS2 was too bright and DS3 has so many NPCs that its nearly unbelievable that the world is close to the finally end.
Stories like the one of Solaire and Siegmeyer were just a bonus that added to the experience. But DS2 and DS3 were like ''People loved those characters so lets add a gorillion more of those tragic stories!'' But plenty of people being around with everyone of them being a giant tragedy simply ruins it.

The thing is, Dark Souls III is framed as a direct sequel. The callbacks make sense in that context, because they're used as anchors so that the player recognizes where they are. Dusk's set is a message to you that "You're in Darkroot. This is what has become of it."

People just had their reactions to callbacks poisoned because DaS2 did them poorly with things like the Dragonslayer. It wasn't confident enough to do 100% its own thing and, most likely because it was less senior developers, they apparently didn't feel like they had the authority to do a direct follow-up. It had a troubled development and got pulled in a lot of directions, so most of what they tried to do ended up unsatisfying.

As far as Dark Souls III goes, the DaS1 callbacks are mostly purposeful for saying to the player "this is what happened while you were away". If you really want to criticize DaS3 for callbacks, it honestly did callbacks to DaS2 as poorly as DaS2 did DaS1 callbacks. The Shield of Want is especially nonsensical in its inclusion and placement.
