You have it right. If you installed a week ago, you should already have the most recent arm9loaderhax.bin. It doesn't undergo as many changes as Luma does.

You're also right about installing to NAND. I'm not aware of any risks, and all it does is allow you to boot without your SD card. If you never intend on removing the card, there's no reason to do it.

That may have something to do with it. Since MHG stores its entire save in extdata, which is nontraditional, it may have screwed with your SD card somehow. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but you can use something like MHGSV to back up the save, then try wiping it and see if you can use wifi again.

Yeah. Your proof of purchase for games on the eshop is a file in your 3DS. If you didn't delete everything for good, you'll still own that game.

You can buy shit from the eshop and you'll still own it just as much as you would have without hacking your system.

Freeshop can take a cache of title-keys and download any game on the eshop for free, if you still want to commit a crime. It should grab the latest version as a part of that.

It was only really risk on first day with the first downgrader (which uninstalled everything and THEN started installing and also did them in an awful order, so if it had any interruption you had a really high chance of bricking), but 1 day later Julian released his downgrader, and in a way it was safer than now in the regards that you didn't have to worry about softbricks at all since 10.3 was the latest version. It was just hell getting the little shit to start, especially on N3DS.

The only risky things with Julian's sysupdater is that it didn't do any checks so you had to make sure you had the correct pack and it wasn't corrupted, and if you hit "Update" instead of "Downgrade" you would brick, so you pretty much had a detonator next to a light switch.

I think the game's size is irrelevant to there being a second region. Sound could just be higher quality. Another reason is that the official SM soundtrack list a total of 176 tracks, around 40 less than XY's own OST (it is a bit inflated because of battle video short music though). If we returned to Kanto, the soundtrack would be larger than XY's because of new remixes for town and battle music. Also you encounter Red and Blue in Alola already. If Kanto were back, you'd almost certainly battle them there instead.

I think the post-game will mostly consist of challenging the newly constructed gyms in Alola and beating the Pokemon League as usual, after beating the main game which consists of island trials and beating the Kahunas along with Skull/Aether shenanigans.

Was using my old 3ds to play mhg, has al9h and Luma. Decided to update so I could continue playing online so I opened starupdater (I think this was the big mistake) and updated Luma then started the system update. It sent me back to the Luma configuration and now I boot to this.

Any easy fix or have I fucked it?

I've never used online features in a 3DS game download before it launched. What are we looking at for Wi-fi capability when Sun and Moon leak? Does Nintendo keep the servers offline, or will they be up for reviewers? Global Link won't work of course because it'll be down until launch (I think?), but I'm interested in knowing if the GTS and online Battle Royales will be ready ahead of time.
