I don't know, Aurelion Sol was also pretty great in all due respects and he was secretly OP and busted for a while, but his playstyle was too difficult for the majority of League's braindead playerbase to master, so most just assumed he was trash until Koreans and LCS pros started playin him.

Meanwhile Ivern is a great and charming character but his kit is a clunky mess that just doesnt' seem fully viable at the moment, maybe for competitive play but that's it so far.

Taliyah was just a disaster all around, her only saving graces are her cute personality, some of her kit (which is pretty fun) and her login theme. But she was literally gutted like 3-4 months after her release due to her having such a poor initial reaciton with the playerbase.

Kled is a mixed bag, you either love him or hate him. He's fun but his kit is just too unstable and results in him being either snowball or trash.

I agree that Riot held some serious bias over Jhin this year on all accounts. Left OP for months and months, was hyped 2 two months, received the best teaser and so on. Meanwhile, they utterly shat on the rest of the champion releases this year by ignoring, nerfing or just outright gutting them. 2016 has to be one of - if not the worst year for new champion releases because of it.

That's the reason why Aurelion didn't see any popular meta play despite the fact that a lot of players actually like his character and really wanted to main him before his release. His kit was fun but people couldn't "get" it, which is why a small section of players got gud with him (and secretly climbed because of it.)

Meanwhile, Jhin has a strong, fun kit that is moderately easy to understand and learn after a number games, at least for experienced players. His great personality, thematics and lore are the cherry on the top that seals the deal and makes him a League icon and the most popular release of the year.
