well the cap usage is the weakness of lasers. Vexor can do a shitton of dps for a cruiser but its range is shit with blasters so most of the time you only have to deal with drones. With cruiser laser boats the range doesn't really matter as you can instantly switch ammo, but tracking upclose is shit and it drains cap. Everything has a give and take, which is why right now I just stick to flying a slicer where I can easily choose my battles.

Like the Armageddon for example, it has 5 non bonused gun and missile slots

It's better to use missiles or autocannons in them

Take the punisher for example, there's no real reason to use lasers in it anymore since things like blasters do a he'll of a gold job or any weapon system in there

Most drone ships don't have a direct bonus to their gun highslot s so either neuts or autocannons fill them too like the Dragoon or algos

Yes, they can and will be an actual factor. In one of the recent large-scale battles 17% of the fleets were made up of t1 frigates, destroyers, and cruisers, the ships Alpha clones will be able to fly. You'll also have access to some nice money-making opportunities such as exploration and faction warfare, so PLEXing won't be as hard as everyone makes it out to be.

Gallente is going to be the "safe" pick, but CCP has said they're going to do a balance pass to make each race roughly equally desirable to alpha clones. If that works out it will mostly come down to what you like more thematically, although I would suggest avoiding Amarr as their low-tier ships tend to have much more issues with capacitor usage than other races' ships.

Amarr. They have some of the nicest looking ships in the game. The smaller ships are aggressive and agile looking, the larger battleships actually feel like proper flagships.

They've got great armor tanks and shoot laser beams which are some of the best long range, high damage weapons in the game, great for kiting. Their backup weapons are drones (think mini fighter jets) which are in an extremely strong place.

They have one of the most fun and effective EWAR (electronic warfare) in the game, neuts which drain power from enemy ships making them unable to heal, move quickly and in some cases fire back.

Not to mention there are many RP events/lore surrounding the Amarr Empire, if that's your thing. There's even a big alliance in the south, called CVA. They are comprised of Amarr loyalist roleplayers and they fly 'Golden Fleets' all the time.
