I don't think there's anything wrong with pointing that out, though. Shit translations deserve to be called out. And I say that as a EOP. I don't think there's anything particularly elitist about calling out an objectively bad translation, nor do I think that doing so robs anyone of their enjoyment. If anything, I think reading something which portrays a work in an extremely poor fashion is infinitely more offensive. It's a waste of my time and it deters any future translators from picking that title up.

The one thing about the Daitoshokan TL that really upset me was the line about reading while walking. The TL'd version says something like, "a true literature club member knows the best path to walk on is one with a book in hand", but the Japanese was actually "as a true literature club member, I was able to find a path to walk even while reading a book". I remember reading the JP and feeling really nostalgic because I myself would read books while walking, avoiding people out of the corner of my eyes. It really kicked off me empathizing and relating with the MC because I saw so much of myself in him. Yet, in the translated version, no one is going to be able to make that internal connection. If I read the TL'd version I wouldn't have made the connection. It's a small thing but it meant a lot to me.

I read 999 before Ever 17 and even knowing some of the twists would be reused in Ever 17, I didn't know which ones would be reused, so it was only after reading both that the similarities became apparent to me, not while reading one after having finished the other. I'd say 999 is the better of the two personally.

The twists in 999 I felt were a little silly, but Ever 17 retroactively improved my opinion of 999 since Ever 17 was far sillier and far more poorly handled, even if the twists themselves were similar. Ever 17 is embarrassingly clumsy and seeing how poorly it was handled it made me think higher of 999.

You can read them in any order, but if you're only going to read one, read 999. It's not as retarded, the setting is intriguing and the pacing is infinitely better.

I don't know how the sequels compare. I'm waiting for the PC release of VLR since I don't own a Vita or a 3DS and I'm not reading ZTD until I've read VLR.

I haven't beaten the game so I couldn't tell you, but there's two factors to consider here: one is that you have a time limit (that's more than enough if you focus on one girl) and a primary method of raising love points only occurs once a week (so if you try to do two girls at once it'll push you to your limits. Two, is that there is a special item which MAJOR boosts points (it's kinda dumb so I won't describe it) and those are in very limited supply, I doubt there's enough to double time.
