But that's the first time they're talking in five years. I'm sure what they both wanted to say was something they both thought over numerous times. Chloe wanting to be angry at Max, and Max just wanting to profusely apologize, but then they reconnect and none of that happens. Chloe gives Max shit for a few seconds, Max says sorry, and after that they just talk like friends catching up and making plans for the future.
In just a short time you see the effects they have on each other and how much happier they are being back together.

Just looked that up. A very interesting concept and seems to describe what I was thinking of. Like I said, if you've ever seen the old episode of Spongebob that's what I was thinking of: The character dreaming and having their own world that reflects their personalities, pasts, and desires. Through some magic, some people are able to go Into other worlds. Like Max entering Chloe's, or Chloe entering Max's.
I may have to write this idea down and try to make it into something. I'm having a lot of fun thinking about the possibilities.

What design did you do? Originally I was just doing one because I felt like I had to (Family tradition and all that). But then I found a stencil of an Owl perched on a branch and really liked it, it came out pretty good.

Rays of morning light shine through the window, finally becoming warm enough to wake Kate from her slumber. Sleeping in on Tuesday morning is a rare delight, she planned to take full advantage. But when she felt a shadow over her, curiosity forced her eyes open, but just a little bit. With her hand blocking out the brunt of the sun's rays, she peeks out through her fingertips. Alice floats by on a pink cloud. Kate found this rather strange, usually Alice prefers floating on golden clouds. The light, fluffy texture reminded her of candy floss. Kate let out a sigh, realising she was now hungry, meaning she would have to get out of bed. She sluggishly sits up, sliding her feet into her slippers. She rubs her eyes and looks out the window. Usually she's helping out Samuel with the gardening around this time, but he was taking a personal day because, “the spiderwebs aren't sparking like they used to”. Kate giggled to herself, maybe Samuel took the day off to ask the fairy lord why his people stopped reinforcing the spider webs with their stardust. Then she wondered if that was the dream she had just woken up from. Anyway, it would have been harder for the school faculty to assign her a lecture for just the morning period than to simply give her the morning off, so that’s what they did. Kate wasn't used to seeing the girls dorm room so empty, there were five beds to a room but more than enough space for another three or four girls to move in. She looked over to Alice on her floating pink cloud, she looked floofy and cute as always. Kate began slowly planning out the day in her head. Shower, eat, pet Alice Then she noticed movement in the bed next her, Max’s covers were moving. “Max?” she asks. She hears a muffled “No” come from Max’s bed. She also noticed Max covering her eyes with the blanket.

Kate’s first instinct was to inform Max that she’s an hour late for class. But she figured her friend had already worked that part out. Kate decided the more diplomatic move would be to lighten the mood, clearly Max was upset about something. “There’s no need to be embarrassed Max, most nights me and Dana watch you sleeping too. We make tea and popcorn and talk amongst ourselves. Mostly about how cute you are.” Max’s eyes reappeared from inside the blanket. “Really?” Kate rubbed the back of her neck and looked in the other direction. “No, I was just being silly.” It occurred to Kate that she should probably have made something up, Dana would be upset if she found out Max suspected something. Luckily Max changed the subject. “I’m guessing you have an excuse to be ditching class, unlike me.” “Yeah, faculty gave me the morning off. Any particular reason you didn't want to go to class today?” Max let out a sigh, she sat up in bed and let her blanket fall around her. She looked just as pretty stressed out and without makeup on. Alice noticed that Max seemed sad and floated over to her, Alice’s pink cloud rested gently in Max’s lap. Max smiled gratefully, stroking Alice’s well groomed fur, it smelled faintly of fresh hay, strawberries and… grape juice?

“I suck, Kate” Once again Kate ignored her first instinct of saying “No you don’t Max” because, once again, she already knew that. She decided it would be better to get to the root of the problem. “At what, Max?” Max looked up at Kate. Kate could tell that Max appreciated the her bluntness. “I can’t pronounce half of the spells.” Kate felt relieved that it wasn't something more serious. “We’ll most people suck at Latin, linguistics is a pretty specialized field.” Max leaned her head back and let out a groan. “I know, I know. I was too embarrassed to go to class because I suck so hard. I can’t believe I hid in bed over something so stupid. Aren't Gryffindors supposed to be brave?” Kate decided to go with her first instinct on this one. “You are brave, Max. More than you’ll ever realise,” Max looks up at Kate. Surprised by her words. Kate decides that now's the time to strike. “C’mon Max, I’m going to give you a few pointers, an hour from now you’ll be better than I am, What do you say!?” Kate is now jumping up and down on her bed. “Y-yeah, hella yeah!” Max is now also jumping up and down on her bed. It took all of Kate’s will to ignore the fact that Max just said ‘Hella’. Alice does excited backflips with her cloud.

The point about the limited budget was often blown out of proportion. The notion that dontnod had something totally better in works but couldn't realize it due to budget is giving them too much credit, if anything. Things could have been more polished on a superficial level and in parts certainly also in less superficial ways, but ultimately it didn't make or break the game. (Funnily enough, in certain regards it probably "made" the game more so than "break" - for instance the visual style was a budgetary choice to a degree.)

We talked about that interview two or three times. Obviously he does make reasonable points, and it was always easy to see where they as developers and story-creators had been coming from. But there are just as good, if not better counter-points to be made and have been. It's pretty much the standard stuff he says about always having wanted for it to come to this choice, that the rewind is more a metaphor, that it's about growing up, that only the choice matters and not what comes afterwards, that they didn't want to take away the player's possibility to imagine where it goes from there.

The standard counter-arguments are then that the choice is predictable and cliché and has been brought about in an irritatingly contrived way; that the story ultimately fails to decide what the rewind really is (gameplay mechanic, narrative device, actual plot-driving reality) and this indecision distorting the intentions and destroying the experience; that growing up doesn't work through trauma; that their narrative intention had already been fulfilled with making the choice, so giving the player something more satisfying/happy/closure-giving than the ending cinematics that they did come up with wouldn't have compromised their vision at all - it would have just made things more hopeful and optimistic; that "leaving things to the imagination" is not really an argument against criticism pertaining to the nature of the endings themselves.

Abandoning the many side-/sub-plots and leaving most of everything a jarring trainwreck is not "leaving things to the imagination", it's simply not making good on promises the series had been making in one way or another. And above that, you could argue they realistically hardly leave room for optimistic imagination. The usual, intuitive reaction of most of everyone to the endings was (apart from perplexion) grief, pain, sadness and so on. And while you can make out a great hopeful, optimistic lining (in one ending) when you look into it, with that also comes the realization that it is all very fucked up and cruel even more so than the intuitive, initial impression lets on - certainly more so than it could have been.

And then he goes on to talk about Max being what you make her out to be, that you can make her whatever you want, that she can "only" be Chloe's best friend - stuff like that that is obviously highly contentious around here and elsehwere.

I agree with pretty much this entire thing. Just the fact that the story was leading player to believe something (That the storm was always coming, since Max had her vision before getting any power), making the plot seem interesting and complicated, and then it just retracts all of that at the end and goes 'lol Max caused all of this' is absurd and people had every right to feel disappointed.
They took the easiest way out and didn't even do it competently. A few minor changes such as: having the vision of the storm appear after Max saves Chloe and not having the storm in the alternate timeline (Where that Max has no power), suddenly makes things consistent. But also incredibly predictable and still cliche.
That just shows the weakness of that entire dilemma and Dontnod knew from various posts/places that many people would not like that ending. So instead of trying to convince players that this final plot 'choice' works, they half-assed it more than any other part of the game.It's especially bad when it's also just tormenting the characters you made and that that so many have come to love.
The rest of the game was amazing, but Polarized (And the ending half of Dark Room) was limping across the finish line.

Polarized has some moments I think are absolutely fantastic.
-Max's plans to escape the Dark Room (Jumping back and forth, risking getting hurt from that much time travel)
-Going back to the classroom and confronting Jefferson
-The Gallery and Max seeing that her dream can come true (But she doesn't want it to without Chloe by her side)
-A lot of the Nightmare imagery and scenes
-Max accepting her actions and tearing apart that photo, deciding her life will be one with Chloe in it

Unfortunately, those are overshadowed somewhat by the massive errors in the plot. things that just cannot be overlooked or forgiven. Shoddy writing, dropped plotlines, binary final choice, and a slap in the face to those that saved Chloe by giving those players an ending a fraction of the length of the other.

Yep. It's like a rain check: they used all the side characters and subplots to build intrigue and atmosphere, players becoming invested in what will happen to them, what their involvement is in everything, how it all plays together and so on. And then just never brought any of it to any conclusion, leaving people hanging in multiple regards. Bait. I mean, they even went as far as literally lying more than once ("Multiple endings depending on your choices!"; Nathan's "The storm is coming!").

Less even: they didn't say "that was just a wrong lead" or have as much be revealed through the story - they just don't mention any of it at all anymore. This entire insane idea that they had players and Max alike going along with (accepting the supernatural, embracing the mystery, thinking things are interconnected and that there is a reason for it all, that we have purpose and will find something out, solve something, fix something) - this entire idea was then just hushed up by narrative and Max alike. All intrigue and mystery a lie, nobody important, the powers purposeless, the suffering and pain just for suffering and pain's sake. Not to mention the unresolved issues even the main character story faces.

So more than just not giving people a satisfying ending or closure, they betray their investment - both into story and characters. And "betray" the tone and feeling of the game prior to that point. Maybe Michel would say they used that investment for a message, but that's a poor excuse for poor writing. "Something great awaits you!" - Turns out it's actually pretty benign and even unsensical within itself in parts - "Ha! You can't expect things to be like you thought they would be in life! We taught you a lesson!"

So yeah, I get why people even go as far as deny dontnod's perspective on the work, and are reluctant to accept anything they say with regards to what the story is about.

My personal interpretation is that Max was given the powers to save Chloe's life, but nothing's free. It comes with a cost. At the end Max is given the choice of whether or not Chloe is worth that cost to her.

I just ignore the stuff about "don't change the past" because as Max herself points out that lesson doesn't even make sense since she never asked for those powers.

I also believe that Max got the power to save Chloe, with the help of Rachel's spirit.
The powers were also a mechanism to help Max grow up and gain confidence in herself. Max's powers got her to the position where she was able to use her own words to save Kate.
The storm may have been caused by Max's first use of the power, the unconscious rewind that also moved her back to the classroom, or perhaps the storm was something destined to come (It is in the alt timeline as well).
Either way, I also say Death of the Author applies here. Not because I don't like what the author said, but because they didn't even know what they were saying or doing. The fans understand the story, characters, and events more than those that wrote them. So while I thank them for their awesome creativity, I will not accept their words as fact.
Max is not to blame for the storm , Chloe does not have to die, and the two of them were destined to live and be together.

Not least because the narrative really is only satisfying to me when I see it as a love story - a (literally) timeless, unconditional love prevailing against all odds. In that case, I have a reason and purpose for the powers, a great benevolence behind them, and the pain and suffering only helps to narratively establish how much more powerful their love and connection is - that it holds through that all, triumphs against it, that they heal and become happier in the midst of it because they are together. Some conceited message about what "growing up" entails? Succumbing to whimsicality and ducking down, betraying our hearts and thinking it childish to fight for friendship and love is not what I consider "adult". Adult for me is to stick to what you are convinced is right, your feelings - no matter what you choose.

The problems began before Episode 5. They started in the final half of Episode 4.
To fix those you need to not have Max and Chloe fall into the trap and not be subjected to writer-induced stupidity. Once that;'s out of the way then make it clear where the storm came from if you're going to explain it. Don't just dump to Max saying "This is all my fault" with no prior proof or thought.
It would take a lot of changes to make Polarized a fitting end. And without major rewrites I think thew simplest fix would have been to extend the Bae ending to an equal length and have a final scene showing numerous characters like in the end of the first two episodes.
Ideally though, things never should have ended up with Max and Chloe on that cliff and being forced between to crappy choices.

Although any choice where Chloe and Max are both alive is fundamentally the better of the two choices. That was what I ultimately wanted out of the game, and I got that.

Well it was shown that Warren died. Chloe's words at the end also seem to imply that Joyce died. "My mother doesn't deserve to die in a fucking diner. And my stepfather doesn't deserve to lose her like that either." This seems to imply that Joyce won't survive the storm, although David would.

Eh, we could conceive of a whole new episode. "Fixing" Episode 5 would deal with a lot of technicalities in the writing and execution of certain scenes, introducing new ones. You can't "fix" an episode if you think the overall concept fails somehow - that's a not a framework you can work within.

That said, in mostly keeping to their intentions and visions with the episode, I would have already liked it much more if they did have a few key scenes be more well-written/executed (Jefferson's pretty much entire Dark Room theatre, Vortex Focus, Nightmare, Cliff most notably), added key scenes for other characters (Nathan's demise (debatably), escaping the Dark Room with Victoria, a more telling scene for Joyce, a more purposeful final to Warren's role, obviously things to do with Rachel and Sean) and changed the endings to be less of a bummer - for example by making it so the tornado dissipates when you choose Chloe (you refused to play with your powers again and "learned the lesson" that you should accept reality, however horrible, and stuck to someone in the worst of times, against and through all - why not reward characters and players for that?) or that Chloe survives when you choose Arcadia (you have already made the hardest choice and let go of something incredibly dear to you just for others - why not reward for that?).

The ending is not "happy" regardless because the week was already more than horrible enough - there is enough "life" to chew through, enough tragedy and misery to deal with and try to overcome. The narrative culminates in the choice as they had wanted, their vision for the narrative ends there. So why make everything even more cruel beyond that?

(The endings could also have had prior choices play into them more instead of two hard-set videos. And then there's ideas around prior choices determining the final choice, or similarly an ending scenario where you always go into the butterfly picture and then make your choice.)

My belief is that Joyce and Frank were saved by David and brought to the Dark Room to use as a shelter.
Not that it matters since I also think Max would not settle for not being able to help anyone. She would go back to some point earlier in the game and tell Chloe they need to warn people. Get Jefferson and Nathan taken care of earlier and leave more time to convince people a storm is coming.
You're free to believe what you want about who lived/died but I share a much more optimistic view on things. The game to me the whole time was saying "One person can make a difference. One person can be a hero just by being there."

Same teenagers that regularly use drugs, owe him 5000 dollars and/or (tried to/might have) shot him with a gun. (bonus points if they also killed his dog)

While we don't know much about him, I think it;s clear Frank has had a hard life. He's done some very bad, and unforgivable things, but he doesn't want to be seen as evil.
There is a lot of hope for him. He's realized his errors, he knows he's hurt people he cared about, and he has friends that do care about him.
With honoring Rachel as his motivation, he will get better. To become a man that she would be proud of.

He says they didn't want to take away the player's ability to imagine those things. That's not worth all too much when talking about story-telling. Even ignoring all the things they "left up to the imagination" (i. e. hinted at, teased and baited and created an atmosphere of intrigue with and then never brought to a conclusion, or even just up again), there's still things they narratively "owed" to the audience. Owed in as much as: It is completely understandable that large parts of the playerbase are upset with them not giving them those things.

Such as a more direct romantical establishing of Pricefield and primarily how it plays into the ending, a more apparent and satisfying demonstration of what they meant with it all, and certainly a more hopeful and optimistic note to it. Those all could have been achieved without compromising anything, and would have actually allowed for imaginations run more freely than they do now where realistically, it seems all roads in the LiSverse cruelly lead to tragedy for no reason at all.

Besides, for that argument's sake, it would have easily been possible to extend and polish the ending to match the other one without having to give things away. Easily. There would have been things worth to show apart from whether people survived or not if they didn't want that, and even if it was just more scenery for a few minutes for the sake of at least balancing the endings out that would have sufficed in a lot of people's heads already, I'm sure. Show more of Max and Chloe in the car and dealing with what they see, more time of them together, more intimacy than a shoulder-grab, maybe even going through debris, theior rooms and whatnot, confronting the consequences. That is more realistic, instills more hope, establishes their connection after-the-fact more clearly and they could have easily left it vague whether people survived or not and still have them drive off at the very end, "looking forward" just like they do now.

Stuff like that would not have been hard to do, expensive, or time-consuming. There is no excuse to justify why one ending is that much shorter. It gives the impression of a 'good' and 'bad' ending and feels like a cold shoulder to those that stood by Max and her feelings the entire game.

While it's obviously debatable whether those are worthwhile narrative intentions to have (I think not showing a distant future of Max and Chloe together is fair enough, but they should have absolutely shown more Max and Chloe together in the present of that ending; not showing the other characters is not worthwhile in my mind since it doesn't serve a message that wouldn't have already been established and conveyed completely with the making of the choice itself - Max has already made her choice and stuck with Chloe above all, so showing that not all is lost after that would not diminish her decision at all, it would only make things less gloomy) - while that is debatable, I was saying they could have absolutely balanced the endings out more without compromising those intentions.

As you say, people - not unjustfiedly - get the impression dontnod worked much harder on one ending than the other. They could have changed that without showing other characters or Max and Chloe's future. Showing Max and Chloe more intimate in their confrontation of the aftermath (and more confrontation with it altogether) would be important to the narrative and incredibly satisfying. The shoulder grab and tiredly-happy smiles are not bad, but what about powerful hugs, tears in their eyes, clinging on to each other and then settling into a more composed happiness? Hand-holding! Maybe even a kiss after that hug. Likewise, going through debris, through their rooms collecting stuff and so on would be narratively important too. First, it's just unrealistic that they wouldn't search for people. Then it shows that they confront themselves with it all, deal with it emotionally and practically. That's obviously psychologically very important, gives more confidence in their future well-being, is more in-line with the narrative theme of not running away from your problems and demons. Again, they could have still left the fate of any other character vague with that. It's still primarily about Max and Chloe all the same. All the more.

I wasn't thinking of showing a distant future, even just a few weeks or a month ahead.
To show that Max and Chloe are alright and are healing and building their relationship.
I get that they didn't want to show the fate of every character, but they took the other radical view and showed nothing.
I'm entirely find with an open ending as long as it's because it benefits the story and not 'The writers stopped giving a shit and couldn't understand their own plot'.
Although I will admit there has been an upside because it allows me, and other here, to construct and discuss our own ideas about the future. And as long as those ideas involve Max, Chloe, their friends, and their family growing, that's not a bad ending at all.

The relative openness of the ending does have an upside, allowing us to imagine relatively freely as Michel also says, but for months my imagination had led me to dark places before I embraced a more optimistic and hopeful reading of it (with help of headcanons such as that they did spend a day or two in Arcadia before driving off in the ending). And so having a more inherently optimistic ending - along the lines of what I have written there, or even all-out along your lines of showing that Joyce & Co. survived and a happier future of Max and Chloe - would have been better.

I like small parts of Episode 5 but as whole and as a conclusion to the game it was unfitting and the weakest by far of all the installments. I've already over-written most of it in my head and decided Max would just go back to an earlier point and find a better way to end the week.

I liked the Zeitgeist Gallery, the Nightmare (Snowglobe, Hallways, Dark Room, Diner, Pricefield Museum (Wish I could have visited the giftshop!)), and watching Max rip apart the photo and Chloe taking her hand.

Agreed. I actually already see that realization in the ending. At least as a sentiment that lives within that final choice, and smile at the end - even if it doesn't come across as clearly and strongly as I'd wish.

I think right after the storm and when they get to Seattle, Max would be beating herself up big time. Chloe would pretty much have to yell at Max to "Cut the shit, I'm not letting you destroy yourself and fuck up your life like I nearly did to mine". A little tough love but it gets the point across to Max: She was put in a shit position with no good choices and she cannot blame herself for that. She needs to be reminded of all the good things she did and all the people she helped.
At the same time, Chloe would be trying to stay strong for Max but she still has tons of her own stuff to deal with. She may hid it and bottle it up, which is definitely not good.
I think it would take the both of them breaking down and sobbing in each others arms before they can really start healing and moving on. Once the tears stop they are stronger as people, stronger as partners, and stronger as a couple.
