The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for retards:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths

>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Can you do space-shippy looking spaceships in ftd or does everything need to be symmetrical?

Are they useful?
>>
>>158828864
They don't have to be 100% symmetrical to be able to fly in a straight line, but you'll need jet stabilizers

>Are they useful?
Missiles can't turn outside of atmosphere, ballistic weapons have recoil that can make your ship spin in unwanted directions, and the only viable solutions are lasers and particle cannons

The adventure mode is kinda buggy, first zone (the easiest) spawn everything and their mother at once, if you change zone then the spawn rate goes to 0 and build up slowly.

So balls hard start, yawn mode for 99% of the game and then maybe a challenge or two when finally you reach the difficulty level in which godly designs spawn
>>
>>158814031
>And for 99% of the users, for the reason that is "free and open source", it is absolute dogshit.
Fixed
>>
And don't forget that either Microsoft is colossally incompetent, or outright malicious again (like with IE) as they try to force their own shitty DRM game platform in favor of Steam, which seems to mysteriously have worse performance on Windows 10.
>>
>>158829037
Or just use CRAMs.
Lotsa power for little recoil and if hit they won't blow up your vehicle
>>
>>158828864
Nice botes, very pointy
>>
>>158830341
True, but in orbit, their low speed means you won't hit anything. Spaceships have an average speed of ~80m/s, and there's at least 800 meters from orbit to sea, so odds are you won't even hit a bulkward from there.

FTD has steam engines yet?
>>
>>158840165
I've been toying in my head with the idea of a modernized flathead engine

A proper crossflow design that would require an awkward exhaust valve pushrod arrangement, but could provide a low cost low maintenance alternative to the OHV

It would be extremely compact and capable of low cost high performance and would lend itself very well to a modern turbocharged DI design
>>
>>158840563
Can it be maintained with currently widely available parts?
If the answer is no, it's just another wankel.
>>
>>158840320
Yeah
>>
>>158840808
Since it burns materials directly will it replace current engines as to finally complete the unification process of resources?
>>
>>158840786
I mean you could partsbin a lot of it if it goes like I'm thinking

Retooling a block wouldn't be that hard, mostly just repositioning pushrod channels

The heads themselves would be dirt cheap since the cylinder head on a flathead is literally just a cylinder cap with some cooling channels.

It would be an interesting engineering exercise at least

Also the wankel has tremendous potential, its just hard to balance the extremes of "you get fuel economy, emissions, and power, but not all 3"

Force induction can fix a lot if it though
>>
>>158841013
No idea, but keep in mind that fuel is made from material, so it wouldn't take too much to unify it and send the refinery blocks to the decoration tab
>>
>>158805309

why when I make counter rotating propellers for my stupid plane does the damn thing still turn to one side instead of being equal? EVERYTHING ELSE IS EQUAL, propellers rotated, seemingly in the same direction (visually at least, who knows what the game does underneath), all wheels going at the same speed, no mods

I tried google but all I get are results from kids who are trying a mono engine plane or something else and they don't understand torque.

Current meta (read: don't fucking bother with anything else) favors ~60mm sabot spam, midrange HEAT/frag, and high caliber HEAT. Those 23mm peashooters aren't going to do shit.

But those are all deck guns. For almost anything you'll want to do a one-axis turret deep inside the hull, rotating around a single gauge increaser through the deck and just having the firing piece outside. All of your loaders and shit goes inside and gets extra armor. But you have to build from the firing piece, so use a wooden scaffold to get it all set up right.

Also: for deck guns, use a two-axis turret and you don't even need a mantlet. The barrels alone have enough wiggle room to point where they need to fire.

Extremely good.
Small PAC with just a bit of overclock and EMP drops most small fliers scarily fast (one shotting squirrels and the like)

It can also kill or severely cripple bigger stuff with some luck and some more hits.

I can't be bothered to look up the videos now but i think you can see it in some of the first Lathland FtD adventure mode videos.

Also i think EnterElysium or Lathland again made a large PAC ship with a smaller PAC turret on top for AA and it was crazy good (the AA turret)

This pic is old as fuck, but there are lots of.
Capital ship engines connected with rotors into a small copckpit.

Better option is the modular thrust, you can shape it as you like, there is also a nasa mod with round thrusters, improved hydro thrusters wich are bigger, but its just a model replace.
and there are other capital ship thrusters without all the log, just the end part.
>>

Especially. HA is shit for anything less than 300mm, and barely not shit above it. You want some combination of sabot and solid, because the shells' shit damage gets multiplied by its good speed. But after a recent nerf, less than 30mm is too shit to salvage even then.

The most effective small-bore (< 125mm) shell is frag. You can make the frag cone very small, so a bullet connecting spawns a shitload of fuck you BBs in the same specific direction.

like the holocaust
the gas vans were too slow

>Initially the victims were killed with gas vans or by firing squad, but these methods proved impracticable for an operation of this scale.[123] In August 1941, Himmler attended the shooting of 100 Jews at Minsk. Nauseated and shaken by the experience,[124] he was concerned about the impact such actions would have on the mental health of his SS men. He decided that alternate methods of killing should be found.[125][126] On his orders, by early 1942 the camp at Auschwitz had been greatly expanded, including the addition of gas chambers, where victims were killed using the pesticide Zyklon B.[

You get human made monsters.
That hell knight looks like everything else, and that hell razer looks like a hell knight.
Brutal doom is an edgy mod made by an edgy boy, boasting that his way of filling the screen with gore is the way doom was meant to be played. Doom 4 boosts this.
Piñata enemies means infinite health.
DOOM 1&2 are like a maze, and you choose when to fight and you can always roll back to recover.
This game is filled with references to other Bethesda games, unneeded old Doom references and nods and breaking the fourth wall. There's even "4d3d3d3 engaged" on a screen.

Not to mention that 0% of anything goes to any of the original makers of Doom, the absolute lack of modding that Doom cared for, and the very lacking music.

>a triangle that you drag around and preset ships
That was a really badly worded question, but damn, that interpretation had me giggling a bit.
Combat triangle describes a rock paper sissors relationship between objects, it's a balancing thing.
Like slow fire counters rapid fire counters something else counters slow fire.

Think the proper term is the state of the combat meta or something, don't really know.
Basically, with the types of guns, possible types of armor, possible types of thrusters, is it going to be bahlansed in a way where different types of things have a circular relationship?
Or would it just be a contest of who has the more creative and free type of autism.
Or would something like inter-component interaction be configable, allowing both rigid and free autism?
>>
>>158930651
>Or would something like inter-component interaction be configable, allowing both rigid and free autism?
Basically this, my dude.

I personally would like the ability to just make modules and shit, and throw it out for players to use, balance be damned. This only works in a dueling or FFA situation, however. In multiplayer team based games similar to world of tanks, this wouldn't work at all even slightly. You'd need to have a certain composition of vessel types to make it not horribly broken, and that just isn't possible with REM's freedom.

Ideally speaking, modules would have a designed role. Say for example, spess. Spess modules wouldn't give too much of a flying fuck about size or mass (for the most part), so using a spess module to power your aeroplane would be turbo stupid. Inversely speaking, an aeroplane module, say, a turbine wouldn't work at all in spess for obvious reasons, but would work in a pressurized 0g arena.

A turbine on a tank would also be stupid because of how fragile it is, and how much fuel it takes to produce enough horsepower to move the damn thing. lookin' at you, abrams. But entirely possible. A naval gun on a tank? Kinda dumb. The russians did it because lolstalin and they had them lying around. They were effective for their designed purpose regardless.

This logic continues within a certain movement style, such as spess, where some modules will be intended to function on something to fill a fast-attack role. Doesn't mean you can't fit a dozen on and make yourself a porcupine of fuck you.

Armor in space is a hard thing to make perfect, so you don't necessarily need a fuckmassive gun to damage a well-armored target. Inversely, its also possible to create internal bulkheads to prevent critical damage from a lucky hit through a thruster.

The balance will really depend on testing and how autistic the testers are. We'd love to make it full autism, but if it isn't fun then we'd need to scale it back a bit.

considering it can 1-hit kill anything, its still pretty good.
Exploits in RPGs are very fun.
>>
>>158971575
It doesn't 1hit kill anything, just brings them to the astral plane
By the time you can make them without half of your party punching you (because neither bags of holding or portable hole are common or cheap) most things you want to use it on sees a forced visit to the astral plane as a mere annoyance
>>
>>158971763
What if what you hit is larger than 10 feet, though?

It says a sphere of 10 feet, but what about things outside of that sphere of influence?

Would it remain static, or would it get pulled in?
>>
>>158971763
You do have a point, but it would be effective against large beasts. Tarrasques dont stand a chance.
and if that doesnt work, there's always the peasant railgun

>>158972206

>>
>>158972046
If it pulls stuff in then sure yeah anything that doesn't get fucked by said astral plane is a-okay, but if it remains a static hole that just opens and closes a 10 foot sphere...

Remote disembowelment via astral plane, anyone?
Perhaps de-face a massive entity?
>>
>>158972580
Yes but at the end is a thrown object.

Isaac Arthur talks about stuff like that, a lot of his content is revolved around things that seem sci-fi but are possible to make.
Are there any games where I can have a sims like sci-fi world and construct megastructures like the orbital ring? I mean like it's possible to construct not that there's a pre-loaded object to use.

Void Shields nigga. They have energy fields that block basically EVERYTHING from ever possibly harming a titan.

The only thing that can really hurt a titan, is another titan, and at that point their firepower is so fucking massive it doesnt matter what kind of armor they have, because titan tier guns will level entire citys. Might as well make it look sweet as hell with cathedral windows and stuff.

Space elevators do not work that way. Space elevators work using a thin, lightweight, yet strong tether. Most likely made of some carbon allotrope like carbon nanotubes or diamond nanothreads. One ties the tether to a rock above GEO which because of centrifugal force pulls the tether taut.

Now the minimum mass of a 'seed' tether is in the range of 20 tons. You really need the cable to be light because it has to support its weight.

Thus what you end up with is a gossamer thin super strong tether. There are question as to whether we can actually build materials strong enough.

Individual nanotubes exhibit the required strength, but is is a question whether we can grow longer tubes with the same properties

Like the "Endo-steel" in Battletech.

>Developed by the Terran Hegemony in 2487, Endo Steel was designed especially for use in BattleMech skeletons. Using zero-G manufacturing techniques that uniformly mix high-density steel with lower-density titanium and aluminum, the process produces a metal twice as strong per unit of weight as standard skeleton materials thus halving the weight of the chassis, but at an increase in overall bulk.

A variant of this idea might be good in engineering games. Things that can only be made in certain environments gives people and incentive to go somewhere.

There is currently no reason whatsoever to use the planets in spengies that I'm aware of.

Or alternately give people a reason to go to space in FtD.

>>industry that can only be done in microgravity
Some of this comes from excitement about metal foam. Metal foam was supposed to be something that could only be done economically in microgravity. You get higher strength to weight ratios with metal foam because it's filled with nothing.

Then we invented 3d printing and found we could make metal foam that wasn't random and had better properties. Or even better, make structures with regions of variable foam density. Space simply became obsolete

There are some cool things you can do in microgravity though. Microgravity makes it easier to zone melting refining of silicon on a large scale. Such a process is gravity limited. NASA once had designs for a solar cell factory that did this with streams of molten silicon passing through electromagnetic levitation 'pipes'

Once the first level of inserter stack bonus has been researched, the wagon->chest operation is no longer the rate-limiting step in a traditional offloading setup.
The bottleneck is instead the chest->belt operation, which the other anon's design in fact remedies.

WD40 is a partial lubricant, but is not a lubricating oil, but a creeping fluid. It is also laced with solvents and aggressive components that break down oils and fat. WD40 is used to destroy crusted oil, and is also highly hydrophobic. It tears orings apart and removes preexisting lubricating oils. WD40 is a cleaning agent. For example, you can clean your bike chain with WD40, but if you run it with WD40, yoru chain will tear itself up. After cleaning a part with WD40, let it sit, then rub it down thoroughly and lubricate it properly with a lubricating oil.

And remove any rubber gaskets, orings and the likes you cherish before spraying WD40 on it.

>>159084062
Well, it is an oil, so it will lubricate the applied surface for a while. On the other hand, it is also highly aggressive. That shit eats rust for breakfast, for example. And then it evaporates, because it's a short-chained oil with several additives that have a low conversion temperature to gaseous form.

So, yeah, it will lubricate things for a day, tops. After that, you have some remaining gunk and a lot of dirt that you can wipe off, as it's bound by those remains. Wipe it off, then lubricate it properly. Heavy duty shit requires some really greasy fatty shit, light elements work best with silicone spray.

None of that is softair, anon. That's a Tom Kaye Automag (Highpressure, unregulated valve) and a Budd Orr Autococker, based on a Palmer design and pneumatically automated.

Name me one fucking sport where you can shoot people that isn't paintball.

Also paintball guns shoot like fucking christ. You probably assume they don't clear 200fps at the muzzle. They can do about four times that if you're an asshole.

>"and the dude was probably pretty smug about this."
Actually, both Tom Kaye and Budd Orr were pretty likeable. I met both during my time in the states. Kaye is 100% /egg/, though. Guy came up with using 300bar / 4500psi high pressured air rather than CO2 for paintball, and developed valves and tanks. His idea of a rate-of-fire regulator was also "MORE PRESSURE MORE DAKKA", rather than Budd Orr's "you gotta tweak the valve timing until your fingers bleed" approach.

>>159088293
I played with 320fps, and I played with 214fps. Personally, I prefer 290ish fps, because someone lighting you up at 20 shots/second (manually triggered) doesn't need to do that with more than 290fps. I am sure I still have scars on my back.

Yeah but mechanically it's the equivalent of a Huot. Looking at the diagram I can almost feel the smug sense of satisfaction he felt as he put the design forward despite it beign a collection of mechanical bandaids that have been coagulated into rough assemblies.

I shouldn't claim superiority because I have a design for a PVC-built 1/2" superball autorifle I have been sitting on for four years out of sheer laziness. The test bench would cost a mere $20 in supplies to prove the mechanical theories.
>>
>>159088657
Purdy, I once tried building me one of those E-blades but gave up eventually. Pretty sure my solenoid was fugged but I didn't feel like dealing with it anymore. The $100 timmy I picked up a couple years back has been bretty reliable though, only problem it developed was a small macroline leak after sitting for a year.

>a PVC-built 1/2" superball autorifle I have been sitting on for four years out of sheer laziness
Sounds an awful lot like the semi-auto PVC dildo rifle I've been procrastinating on for a while now. We need to get off our asses and build
>>
>>159088823
Autocockers became an industry gold standard, and stayed relevant for quite a long time. They got electric, but were never electro-pneumatic - you only had an electric sear tripper and valve actuator. There were rebuild kits, though, where you could install a true electro pneumatic valve. Those cockers were the shit. Felt like shooting a sewing machine.

Dammit, I really want to like machinecraft, but the lua scripting is so goddamn dumb. You can't just set joints to servo to specified angles or thrusters to specified amounts. No your script has to virtually push keyboard buttons from the actions you assigned, essentially making it bang-bang control. We can't have a thruster apply a force of 1-5, it's either on or its off.

This makes it damn near impossible to make to finely control joints so that one could make something like this:

The "matrix" holding all the rods in the logic unit to the right has different spacing from the one of the left. It's screwing with my head a bit since some controlling rods need to run the entire length of the machine, and while it'd technically work if the rod was only anchored at one end it'd be messy and might clip a bit.

I'm going to rebuild from scratch with a thicker matrix, making it more robust. Not complete yet, but it'd run slow as shit since I'm only using one number selector which cycles through all 5 digits, as opposed to a separate number selector for each. If it can take more shock forces then I can make it run faster without breaking as well.

Just confirmed my suspicions: This is a data destruction operation. They're probably grinding up RAM because they don't know how it works.
>>
>>159180154
Maybe with stone blocks there would be reason for all the useless rocks on spengies
>>
>>159186265
Would be nice to have a tool like that concrete thing in stock spengies. Would be great for asteroid stations, when you can't fill in massive fucking craters.
>>
>>159186067
Maybe uh
er

Really, I have no idea why they would do this. They could sell these for 30$ a piece as a media PC or what the fuck ever. There's a store in my city attempting to sell a phenom x4 II 840 computer with an integrated HD 7430 for 799$.
>>
>>159186563
Basically, some companies have really retarded rules for data destruction because the government will come down on them like a load of bricks if they have a breach. So, to prevent some crackhead digging HDDs out of dumpsters and plugging them in to sell all your patients' medical data, they wipe HDDs (sometimes even melting them down) and do stupid shit like this that won't do dick.

I took a class in computer forensics and had to do case studies on companies like this.

Are there multiple planets or am I just blind?
Also are cargo ships still in?
>>
>>159186797
God forbid they just take the drives out.

My local recycling centre has rules like this. I've quite litterally pulled a fully functional galaxy s3 from a bin with just a fucked battery, and another with just a fucked screen, and a fully functioning gaming PC that I just slapped a 7870 and a WD black into. That pc is currently my GF's gaming rig that she uses to play overmeme.

the managers don't like me very much, so I have to pull off sting operations where I slyly pull some electronic shit out of the bin as I put shit in
>>
>>159187112
No, they'll usually have some guy who goes OKAY MELT DOWN THE HARD DRIVES BECAUSE THERE MIGHT BE A SLIGHT CHANCE THEY GET DATA FROM CACHE OR SOMETHING. I ALSO READ A WHITEPAPER FROM RUSSIA SAYING THAT OLD RAM FROM THE 80S CAN STORE DATA SO LET'S BE SURE TO GRIND UP OUR RAM STICKS. WE SHOULD ALSO SMASH UP MONITORS SO THEY CAN'T READ "BURNED IN" PATIENT DATA.

Shit like that. Basically, dumbass becomes manager, makes dumbass rules by reading scary articles on Breitbart or DailyMail.
>>
>>159187112
I like to browse the local goodwill computer center. I shouldn't have passed up the last complete TRS-80 that was there.

NO MAN BECAUSE THE CASE MIGHT HAVE MAGNETIC IMPRINTS FROM THE HARD DRIVE, THE INTERNET SAID SO

Basically, the same bullshit that brought about the "WIPE THE DRIVE WITH 35 PASSES OF RANDOM DATA TO BE SURE"
>>
>>159187789
Also, I forgot to mention that preparing parts for sale costs money and manpower. Cheaper to just punch a hole in the thing and chuck it in a dumpster rather than spend 5 hours teaching Jimmy The Retard how to unscrew the motherboard.
>>
>>159187920

Equpment renewal and sensitive information compliance are 2 sepaihings.
by rules, anything with a storage drive that goes into the deposit, broken, replaced, user left the company.... no matter why is there the computer is wiped before being considered "in deposit" or "for repair"
Whoever hold the control over the IT budget is the one who decide what to do.
I have some bosses that told us to prepare like 50 laptops for a donation, old shit dells with centrino, d620... there was like 120+ but we could savage more than 50, so a few users went home with a laptop for 50 bucks in christmas.

>>
>>159193120
not that guy but you wouldn't believe how much someone can ramp up prices based purely on location, location, location.
>>
>>159193120
There is alot of shit that decides the price, the east west sun orientation and being in a corner for example, both rises the price, and because of the advance in the commercial district nearby.
The bakery has a fucking huge oven, and alot of room with machines and freezers, they even preopare stuff here and then resell it to smaller ones wich only has a not so big electric oven and little to no room to prepare it themselves, that is what it takes most of the rent.
>>159193637
This advance im talking about are smaller drugstores or clothes for bitches and other waste your time kind of bullshit, but suddently from a mid dense shit suburb it became a central commercial area, and prices skyrocketed.

Depends of what you put inside and how good is the walking mechanism, most of the times is better to make a rolling base with a few thrusters to help in jumps or heavy hillclimbs.

Yep. It looks really smart and cool when they succeed too. Shit like ducking behind cover, hiding, running, hunting, ect. sometimes it slams into a wall sideways because it doesn't realize that its translation thrusters are horribly balanced

Not sure what a good base needs aside from refineries, storage, assemblers, oxygen production for non-earth planets, hydrogen, power, connectors for smaller vehicles, controls for going to and fro, what am I missing?
