i swear to god guys i think i found a way to make the AI work in civ6.

the solution is to become a total crybaby like the current leaders, do as they do to you.
for example, at least declare a couple of futil war, denounces a couple of leaders you don't like for no apparten valid reason, build city near others capitals, be a dick in general.

in a 8 players map, i manage to have 4 ally withput a single apparent rational reason for, excluding the normal trade state to state.
i was friend with brasil even if i was always pumping great people, friend with bungabunga without a religion and friend with china with 4 great wonders.
the last one was russia but i was doing good with science and culture.

i tried this tactic in 2 different game and the resoult was the same, half of the leaders where good to me for the entire game.

this shit happened to everyone else?

Look at his science output

You're delaying a tech for 25% higher science from ONE planet, which also costs a scientist slot and a science ship

that'd be a gain of at the very most 10 science or some shit like that, if you put a skill 5 scientist on it

assist research has no place early game
>>
>>158647394
It's one of the leviathans, yeah. Never killed that one before, but the reward is fantastic.
Something like 4000 physics and 5000 society research points, and if you haven't yet gotten it, it also gives you the Jump Drive tech up to 50% on research.
The thing that killed a bunch of my battleships was its breath laser that one-shotted the battleship it targeted. It has 'PD' but from the graphics they look like normal 'shots' as well, or at least they were appearing on both a few of my cruisers and a lot on the torpedoes I fired, so that might've diverted much of the damage otherwise
>>
>>158647698
you have a half truth in that trying to be friends with everyone will just end up in failure. If you piss off couple of people it causes those guys to hate you and then their enemies will like you more in turn. And better yet if your dickish behaviour causes the AI to declare wars on you that makes everyone hate him more which means they like you more by proxy

so yesterday I decided to start a new game and after 3 hours and 5 starts I just gave up. I either start on a shitty spot with no hills and get no hammers, or there is no mountain anywhere so no science and no aqueducts.

At one start I managed to get reasonably well I got BARBED in turn 20. The next after that one fucking Trajan declares war on me before turn 30.

What is the best way to ensure a nice start? Do you save and then explore first or just settle on turn 1 and adapt? I already edited the .lua files to try and increase distance between starting points.

No, I move my warrior to the tile with which I can get most visibility on turn 1, and then I decide where to settle based on the info I have at that time. Sometimes I settle in place, sometimes I move a bit. But I don't move more than 2 turns ever. Usually I settle either on Turn 1 or Turn 2.

Now that we have the whole soundtrack ripped and the main themes have been identified, people are working on sourcing all the ambient musics. Every civ has a selection tied to them that play in a game just like the themes (randomly if they're in a game once you've met them).

They don't have the "evolving" arrangements like the main themes, though; that'd probably add another 12 hours to the soundtrack.

So far we've got the complete list for England:

>>
>>158650249
Stick to Civ 5.
>>
>>158650249
That depends on how forgiving you are
Civ 6 is great but it's still somewhat buggy and missing some features, but it's a great foundation to build upon and pretty fun in its state.

Civ 5 Gold is also great, missing some great additions 6 made, but at least it's very polished and very feature rich.
>>
>>158649417
there are some nice tweaks like increasing the cost of research to space-out the game instead of sending an army to the frontlines that gets obsolete when it arrives. Also spacing out starting positions so each civ can have more space to develop

>>158649450
>>158649580
I don't want to sandbox or cheat but I feel civ6 is very unbalanced so I'm trying to figure out what would be the optimal settings.

Island plates or continents most of the time are so retarded that you end up with a zig-zag river-like ocean with no water near the poles. I never liekd pangea or inland seas but I might give them a try

Can you guys suggest your favorite settings here? Is it okay to use a huge map and just 6 to 8 civs or would that make it even more messed up? What map is the best for very long games?

It's not like we are loyal to Civ V or anything. Or like we're defending Civ V vanilla.

The comparison is merely an objective one at time of asking. Civ V with all the expansions and fixes is a more complete experience to Civ VI at this time. This is subject to change as soon as the patches start rolling in.
>>
I just realized something lads. When other leaders tell you to move your troops and you say they're just passing by, they actually mean move your troops. In Civ V unless you declared war on them there wasn't any problem, but now because I haven't moved them I just got a diplo penalty

Not that guy, but ut's a bit pretentious to think 6 at start would be better than 5 with all expansions and mods developed for it.
On the other hand, 6 is off to an amazing start. Not a perfect one, but it's a legitimately good (not perfect) game at launch, and with expansion + mods it'll become even better than V.
The potential is all there.

no. you are a 16 year old who never lived "back in the day" if you think this is true.
PC games have had patches and updates since the 90s. how do you think mods like CS and TF etc. were born in the 90s if continual patching wasn't a thing? also expansions were a huge thing back then, arguably even bigger than DLCs are now. games didn't just "come out great". nearly all legendary games of the 90s and 2000s are remembered for how they were WITH their expansion packs.

>>158651379
Your basis for comparison is pretty skewed. Of course the patches and expansions made the games even better. But they at least came out pretty great and playtested.

In the industry as of late, games are rushed out because they know they can get away with easy patching a few weeks in that is easy to roll out because everyone has internet, and they know they can just leave unfinished features to sell as piece meal DLC.

Civ V was the worst offender in this regard.

Civ VI is a step in the right direction of at least being not shit at release, but it's a long way from what other games in the series released like.
>>
>>158651436
Fuck off. BE was full of shit from day 1, and even before that. Civ 6 is packed with content compared to Civ 5, it just has balancing issues. The game doesn't even need dlc to be better than Civ 5, they just need to fix the exploits and buff/nerf some things.
>>
>>158651379
>no. you are a 16 year old who never lived "back in the day" if you think this is true.
Games were released in a complete state before internet became ubiquitous. Sure patches and bugs and all that crap happened, but noobody in their sane mind would defend a game with "it'll get better with patches" , like you are doing now.
>>
>>158651379
Not same anon, but sorry this is not entirely true.
> Deus ex has no expansions and probably 1-2 patches, regarded as greatest game ever made, released in 1999.
> Theme hospital: Also a success, probably receives minor patches, and worked great out of the box. Doesnt have expansion. Comes out in 1997?
> Roller coaster tycoon, the very first one, same story. Doesnt have expansion. Sequels do not count.

There are many others. I do not remember having to download patches back then, and the game plays great with all the flaws. Heck, even Simtower has no patches and expansions, and it is great.
>>
>>158651536
yet you know this to be the current state of the industry across all developers so why do you come to a game's thread crying about it?
civ6 is a great launch FOR THE YEAR 2016. will your crying make it the year 1995? it won't so what's the point?

It's called nuance.

civ 6 is about as balanced as civ 4 was on release. It had a metric ton of bugs on release as well, though not as noticeable as civ 6 ones, that had to get fixed with many, many patches. I mean shit, the first civ 4 patch, iirc, fixed an issue with people getting crazy amounts of stuff from the ai through trade manipulation. Different game, same problems.
>>
>>158651958
Not that guy.

But here's my problem: When V was released fan of V are pretty rabid to IV fans that criticized V. But now VI comes out, those same V fans are criticize VI using the argument that IV fans had at V.

This hypocrisy is disgusting, considering VI is thousand time better than V at lunch. As IVfag, VI is finally a Civ game worth playing, unlike V.

I also think it's good that it's a more complete game at launch than civ5 was. Saying that is not "getting fucked in the ass". You're failing to see my point. I'm not a fanboy of any of the games in particular, I just like the series. YES, Civ 6 at launch > Civ 5 at launch. But Civ 6 is still buggy and lacking features.

My point is, if they had wanted to go all the way in a Civ 4-style renaissance, they would've released Civ 6 in a state that was even better than Civ 5 with all the expansions. Doing anything other than that is intentionally rushing the product because you know you'll make bank anyway, specially on the release hype and the DLC's afterwards.

There is plenty hypocrisy, criticism and other shit to go around, but people who play 5v6 card can go fuck themselves - the game, on it's own merit, is at best mediocre. It's design shows promise, but lack of basic competence in UI/AI/Balance leave it to users to make it an enjoyable expirience for themselves.

Comparing it to the previous installment is all good and well. Repeated "look CIV5 was shit too on release" and "Civ4 needed patches too" isn't that. Civ4 and Civ5 exist in their current state, like them or hate them. If you want to compare either to 6 you will find good and bad on both sides, but ultimately, unless you despise 4/5 6 is worse as it is now than either of them. So please stop deluding yourself that people are comparing to previous installment, it's just a wall of excuses for a game that will probably end up the best of the franchise in a year or so.

You're not discussing the game. You're discussing "game industry in 2016 vol. 8429" and the game in question is just coincidental. I was referring to Firaxis as part of the industry, and I was giving explicit examples as to how their practices are not okay, even though they improved from the horrible ones they had on Civ V release. This is relevant discussion.

I like the game. I still however see fit to complain that the game was rushed out, was not play tested, the UI is pretty abysmal, it's pretty buggy and unbalanced, etc. I still like it. And you criticize the things you like because you want them to get better.

Why do you find this all so offensive? Are you a Firaxis employee or something? Why does the concept of nuance continue to evade you so? I don't see why you'd be so invested in a game that you're willing to shut off all criticism of it.

Real talk though, they can't develop the game forever. At some point they have to release it in order to make some money and continue the development. It's a pattern that's been repeating itself throughout the industry.

I'm not saying it's good or bad. Unfortunately it's the expectation of VCs, publishers and the people who handle the money to have specific release dates, and getting everything ready is usually not an option. Making games is hard.

That does not excuse the game or its marketing, but if you see it happening with every single game release, especially with Civ, it should tell you there's actually something that transcends Firaxis.

And even with all that, most people will agree that VI is the most polished a Civ game has been on release past I or II... So at least they improved upon their usual cycle.

Movement fucking kills me in this game. Without decent roads, it takes about 8-10 turns to move from my capital to by northernmost city, not even my southernmost. With roads, it's 6, sort of, if the roads feel like working today. So you have to plan every city as if it's an island, since it can really only rely upon the closest cities nearby for war aid for a minimum of 5-10 turns until reinforcements arrive. pretty shit

SMAC already allowed you to have utopic societies, if you built the right buildings and chose the right policies as some factions.

Man Monte is strong

>Get two Archers and three Egle Warriors
>cap the closest city state
>use workers from Eagle warrior kills to chop forests and pop more units
>Conquer closest AI
>repeat process for entire classical+medieval era
>just keep killing with eagle warriors to pop workers who chop wood to make units/districts
>workers work as scouts who find next target when they have only a charge left
>units get stronger as you access more luxuries

Your cities can even focus on food almost exclusively since wood chopping is so effective
Wood chopping outside of your borders is broken and needs to be nerfed to inborders only
Following this early game strategy I can cap 2-3 capital cities and a city state or two before turn 100, and be set with an army for the rest of the game

Yes, Virtual World and The Hunter-Seeker Algorithm.

Virtual World makes all Network Nodes count as free Hologram Theatres (that basically makes your drone problems irrelevant [+50% Psych, -2 Drones]) and University starts with a free Network Node in every single one of their bases.
Hunter-Seeker Algorithm makes your cities completely immune to Probe Team attacks, which University is particularly weak against (Unless you're playing with the expansion, which adds much more powerful probe team techs).

With these two SP you practically eliminate all of your weaknesses as University.

>Born 2028, in Hollingsdall, Norway, of shopkeeper parents. Studied at Oslo University, earned Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Programming, Masters in Computer Science, Ph.D. Computer Science and Computer Age Philosophy. Became expert with C* and C** programming languages; joined Zakharov Research Institute three years prior to launch of Unity. Assigned to Alpha Centauri crew as expert computer tech. Details are unclear, but evidence exists she initiated an unauthorized experiment in pre-sentient algorithms, using dormant bandwidth on the Unity computers, possibly on the orders of Prokhor Zakharov. She designed the experiment to run for 40 years, hoping for some interesting results over that unprecendented time frame. However, upon awakening, the crew found a a system crash message dated from launch +3 months, along with an auto-stack dump that indicated program failure. Luttinen received disciplinary action for her part in the experiment. She was stricken with rheumatic fever three weeks prior to arrival. Unaccounted for and presumed lost in hospital bay during Unity crash. Reappeared soon after on Planet surface, now calling herself Aki Zeta-5.

Amplitude like to keep their games in good humour, but also include serious plots here and there. The experience at large is hit and miss, because humour is extremely subjective, but in EL's case it mostly works.

It's a survival story that mostly stays lighthearted but sometimes dives into a more serious tone. Take vaulters story for example. Mostly it's low tech IOM inspired faction that spent most of their time underground, because their ancestors got used to underground labs when they crashed on the planet. But story is told from a perspective of a "meme" character, but if you haven't played other Amplitude games you wouldn't say that. It's a medic-robot that tries to help them with their quest to move to surface and figure out their past, all the meanwhile slowly remembering that he wend berserk and killed a tonn of his patients back on the ship.

The easiest way to sum it up is to compare the living planet of SMAC with that of EL. SMAC has an eldrich abomination that simply goes through it's motions, while EL's planet is more of a loving mother lamenting foolishness of her kids. Not that Auriga plays that big a role in the game, but it gives you good perspective on the setting imo.

You have to understand that France under a weak leader after WW2 might have broken down into civil war, since the country was filled to the brim with armed gangs of dozens of competing political ideologies. de Gaulle stopped all of that by being one part ruthless asshole, and one part rampant nationalist. I think it's more about not painting the factions as inherently good or evil, but demonstrating what would be required to achieve them, and The Hive would require a ruthless, calculating sociopath like Yang for it to function as it did.

as far as a mod I want the Brotherhood of NOD

Something like a barracks replacement - hand of nod, produces certain units faster the more barracks you have in your empire (this was a game mechanic in C&C)

maybe also replace the encampment with the obelisk, where it's fire-on-unit mechanism is a laser and does more damage

I'd quite like to see scotland in there. Heritage aside, the antagonistic dynamics the country has had with england, especially after english christianity split from the catholic church, and the later periods under british rule where a lot of technological innovation came from there. Lots of room there for different design decisions on how the civ could be played.

Also an excuse for bagpipes to be in game and I fucking love them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSH0eRKq1lE

Factorio.

Anno games are all about Production Lines and layouts + trading routes between settlements to send raw materials and finished products there and back, and sometimes using these infrastructure to wage war against your competitors.

It also doubles as a city builder since a lot of these products go towards satisfying the needs and improving the lifestyles of your citizens from which you collect taxes that are spent on making your infrastructure even bigger.

Religion, from a game design perspective, can be described as:

>you must opt in early by paying valuable resources (prod, district)
>only ~75% of the game can participate, no refund for people who get beat to the last prophet
>you get one 'attack' unit, and one 'defense' unit. and one unit that can wipe away anyone's work
>play a cute game of attack & defend with literally two binary units, that can still get squashed by actual military units if the player desires
>pressure does nothing, it's all about the units 24/7. thus, multiplayer can squash any attempt at it

campus if i have good location for it (2+ mountains)

markets/harbors usually because they come a loot sooner than industry for me and i usually have a good location for them in mind. trade routes are also extremely good

most of the time it depends on the tile spread because i rarely have money to buy tiles for districts since i keep it for buying out tiles that could otherwise go to city states or enemy cities.
>>
>>158676365

I hope that's not Sega pressuring them to release it early and start cranking out garbage DLC, ruining both Endless Space 2 and Amplitude as a company/brand. 'cause I am pretty sure EL and DotE were in early access a hell of a lot longer.

trade routes are great since the trader alone will usually give you far greater bonus than anything else at that point of the game can and depending on the route, odds are the trader can at the very least match the production of a new industrial district

they are also great for starting up new cities because even the measly 1food 1production (generally a lot more) you get from trading inside your country is a huge boost for any 1 pop city you just founded

Alright boyos. We've been doing pretty good, but I must ask for your advice.

How would you layout your districts here? Someone said a while back that it would be a good idea to place two industrial districts where I marked them southwest, so that their bonuses would reach 6 tiles to my capital (and maybe I can expand around it, trying to make it the center of my empire for now). How about the districts in the capital though? How would you lay them out for bonuses?

We've already got Holy Site and Campus, just unlocked Commerce. We also have the Encampment. Industrial should be coming soon.

Where would you place them? Along maybe with theater + wonders if you so desire. Laid them out for you with numbers.

It's a sinkhole. War in civ 6 that is. You start one or get declared by AI and your options are either white peace with some trivial gains, or take cities. If you take any cities no diplomacy for you with AI till the end of the game. If you don't - you are back to being threatened/impeded by AI.

So your optios are:
1) build a wall and play diplo game
2)WW all day every day.
Due to agendas and warmonger penalty stacking there is no real in between,

There actually was. The Maxim was manual, and required the gunner to aim. Nowadays, they're automated, and they're electrical.

the ships in that picture are from here
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/2031
you'll need this too to unfuck the ship designer menu for the biggest ships
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/1291
i also have the doomsday weapons but still dont have the tech for them somehow
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/2879
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/1925
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/1922
if you want to use both you'll need this to let the AI make use of all the new ships
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/3370
if you want the multiple crisis mod
http://stellaris.smods.ru/archives/1464
when i am running any of the mods for more ships and the war in heaven event triggers the game will start crashing after <10 mins on the 1k star galaxy, i had to "disable" that event by turning down the fallen empire number to 1, dunno if it would have crashed on smaller galaxies, maybe it wont even crash for you but had to put it as a disclaimer

Cold War.jpg

After gobbling up about 5 empires so far (including the empire that was on par to me when the Sleepers event kicked in), a cold war situation has started after a whole ton of defensive pacts as they stopped their expansion.

The empires neighbouring that awakened empire has defensive pacts with me as well, so currently it feels like my fleet's the thing that's actually keeping them in check, despite them still being superior to me in fleet strength.

With no Heaven in War in sight, at least I have this time to continue teching up and can get ready to declare war on a nearby FE to get that psi-jump tech as I'm playing a Fanatic Materialist

How do I look up the names of the capital cities that have been conquered?

And what city does spain start with? Madrid?
>>
So now that TachLance spam is no longer viable, how should I be building my fleets?

Right now I'm building Battleships with Tach Lances bows, Carrier cores, and Kinetic Artillery sterns, these are backed up by a pair of torpedo/career cruisers, which are in turn each backed up by a pair of missile/picket destroyers, which are in turn each backed up by a pair of torpedo boat corvettes. The build is designed to maximize the amount of torpedoes, lances, and amoeba swarms. Everything from destroyer on up has two point defenses and two small gamma lasers as secondary weapons, but I'm concerned that my fleet is built around fancy toys and that I have a serious lack of regular guns.

Should I have included some broadside/artillery type ships?
