The first game's cast took way to long to become interesting. Now with the Convict in your midst you're constantly playing guess who and watching all the tension between the party almost tear it apart.
The general mechanical improvements like better looking and more varied areas, idle animations, fast forward function for battles, different skill sets for each character, and the coaching mechanic really put it above the first.

Not to mention the way more tantalizing motivations (even despite the censorship)

The game looks so-so, but since you're almost always in a zoomed out view it's not a big deal. The framerate isn't great either and it stutters but it's turned based so it's not a big deal. Load times before a mission are like 30 seconds long, then about a 5-7 second load after the insertion video thing for the assets to load in.
That said, it's portable Xcom that comes with the Enemy Within content. Even with those downsides I still think it's worth it to pick up. It does seem to go on sale pretty frequently for $8 so I think waiting until the next sale wouldn't be a terrible idea. Look up some gameplay to see how it runs if that concerns you.

kill the Bahamutian as fast as possible, then just keep hitting the giant while healing as necessary. Make sure you have Silphy in a stack, and maybe Tama with Cure in the other stack. I think my twins were level 8 with lv 7 or 8 Mirages, and I had to use a Phoenix Down at least once because the giant knocked over a stack and killed its members one-by-one as I tried to stack em back up. If you have the Copper thing in one stack it should give good str, and both stacks should be able to do ~200 per hit, and heal themselves for about the same. iirc Silphy's Wind attack that also heals recovers more hp than Cure
