I think a degree of stun is healthy for the game. Imagine if every deck was just 100% agro style? All duels would just last a turn or two at most. Playing stun forces your opponent to manage resources better, play outs to floodgates, and slows down the game to more simplified state. Granted, it isn't always as entertaining for everyone, but its a style of play that nonetheless has seen success.

To be fair, Spellbooks needed to compete with Rulers and Super Rejuv meant that they would always win the grind game since Rulers would always out resource Spellbooks.
Judgement was meant to even the scales so Spellbooks didn't burn themselves out but also had enough resources + a floodgate to compete even if it didn't matter since Rulers were still the best in the end.
2013 YGO was truly the broken era unless you want to argue PePe was stronger than Rulers or Spellbooks

I didn't try making a deck centered around it but the draw of them was that each one could individually be added into different decks. A lot of were shut shutting down light and dark attributes since those were the mean girls of the time

To fully understand it we have to go back to the beginning. It's 2013. We're all freshly into the Cosmo Blazer meta. Firefist are pretty good, and Mermail are still topping charts. The game is all about getting those fresh +1's, and using stuff like triple compulsory was all the rage. Yugis is ok.

Then Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy comes out. A rather unremarkable set really, mostly Mecha Phantom Beast crap and some Constellar support. Except for the dragon ruler cards and Dracossack. Innocuous elemental support at first, and they seemed like pretty alright generics. People threw them in Mermail and stuff and called it today. That is, until one day Satan appeared and decided to put them all together.

You banish a dragon, you search a dragon. You discard dragons to the graveyard, to get more from your deck. Their grave became their second hand and their banish pile was the graveyard that they'd eventually dig back into with Return from the Different dimension. Their deck was simply their hand they hadn't drawn into yet. Gold Sarcophagus was a Rota that gave you a dragon in 2 turns. Seven star sword was draw 2, search a dragon. Card destruction just said "draw 6 more cards". Dragons beget dragons. At the end of the turn, Super Rejuvenation let them draw for every dragon they discarded, which was usually in the ballpark of 7-8 cards on average, meaning you usually drew into another Rejuv, activated it, then drew more cards, probably drawing all your staple S/T and handtraps you needed to stunt your opponents turn, and dumping all the dragons to the grave. No matter what you did, no matter where you put them, they kept generating advantage.

As for the Honest effect, It's surprisingly decent, but Dark Law tends to get destroyed via Card effect or Kaiju'd than by battle (and even then, it still dies to lightning).

The rulers were considered generic elemental support until the babies were released. THAT pushed them over the top. The babies could dump to search or be used as dragon/element fodder. Without the babies, shit wouldn't turned out how it did. If you look at the champion's deck that year, all of the main deck cards either were banned or limited.

The deck was insanely easy to play too. Anyone could just shit out 2 dragons, beat down, and go Dracosack mp2 with a full back row.

For those that don't understand the issue: any time you activate a trap, your opponent will be able to chain their Paleozoic in the grave first every time and stop you from being able to summon off your own traps, and vice versa. Every time a player tries to make a play, the other player will snipe it from them.

I had that same question too Anon after I built the deck for locals fun, and then the next week immediately 4 other players showed up with the same deck because they decided it was good. In my experience, there's a few things that seem to really help in the mirror match:

The game is a grind, and it just helps you out grind them

Appropriate would be good for maintaining hand advantage, but I'm more concerned with how to be able to establish a board.

Raigeki/Dark Hole would be good if you can bait out a bunch of summons first, but that would eat through just as many of your resources.

MMS sounds like a good tech for them in general, so good looking out on that front.

Wattgiraffe does alleviate the stalemate issue and allows you to establish a board if he can resolve. I'm definitely going to test that out.

Since Yubel and Neos Wiseman retrains are all but confirmed what effects do you hope they have? I just want Yubel to be a good staple since they can't just retrain it into being an Elemental Hero monster and for Neos Wiseman to be printed as a fusion monster requiring Yubel and a monster with "Neos" in it's name.

How about they actually make Yubel playable before they get to Neos Wiseman?
The Foolish Burial + Limit Reverse Combo doesn't cut it anymore and she needs protection so Castel doesn't meme on her.
Neos is beyond saving, everything about him is all subpar and bloated but Yubel just needs a few cards to summon herself, protect herself and recycle herself.
