If you can get enough Popes elected the culture of Rome may change and you get a lot more cardinals. What do you mean? If you want more and better troops that reinforce faster and have higher morale then you need to upgrade military buildings as well. Walls and castle towns are just there so that counts have some degree of income to play around with. Mayors followed by bishops are the real moneymakers.

Barony-tier mayors upgrade their own holdings fast enough to keep up with tech(except universities) so you don't need to worry about upgrading them. If you have castles or temples in secondary slots, though, I can recommend giving them some walls and town upgrades, since it helps them get the money to buy the other upgrades themselves.

All vassals pay different amount of tax depending on their opinion of you and whatever your tax laws are set to.

Depends. Always prioritize your own holdings and then if you have the cash to spare you can help out your vassals. If not, save your cash for mercs, claims, bribes and whatever else is more important at the moment. Mayors and bishops should make enough money themselves to upgrade their holdings, but barons (especially newly built baronies) really gets a well-needed boost if you for their first castle town and walls because their initial income is so low.

So I guess strategically using the size of Russia to wear down enemies manpower with attrition (+1 with defense) is one big meme as Ottomons basically walked around with 4 or 5 30-50k doomstacks and laughed with their seemingly indefinitely endless manpower. I looked at the ledger and saw it hover at about 10-15k manpower for about 3 years. Are retinues still shit? I remember them being broken on release and then they were nerfed into the ground, being ridiculously expensive while reinforcing too slow.

Right now I'm learning towards the 250 pikes/50 archers retinue, IIRC heavy and light cav don't mix very well and they have bad tactics, even with the German bonus.

My (German) unique retinue is 150 HC and 100 LC, as I said. The bonuses I'm talking about are from the buildings, but depending on your culture you also get different combat tactics. The 'heavy cavalry' cultures like the Germans and the Franks can get the crouched lance charge in combat, increasing heavy cavalry offense by 420%, pikemen offense by 60% while decreasing heavy infantry defense by 60%.

I found this which is updated for conclave and it seems to confirm my suspicions that the German Knight retinue is trash because of the heavy/light cavalry mix and how generally poor the HC stats are after the nerfs. A good mix of pikes and archers seem to be the best overall, with no contest if you're Scottish or Italian.

Cataphract retinues are bad because if the horse archers. Between the knights and the defense retinues there isn't much of a difference. Really it depends on the bonuses from your capital, the knights start worse and become better. I would mix them and keep the HC at just over 20%. It's not like a pure retinue of adequate size won't dominate, it's more about whether you can get to that adequate size. Think of it this way, how big are the armies you're facing? Can the knight fight them alone? I'm not sure they will still win 2:1 (and you probably don't want to pay those reinforcement costs anyway) like when retinues were totally OP, but if you're looking at near even number matchups, build knights. If you're going to mix them with your levies and you just want extra pursuit damage, go ahead and build them it's not like you can build perfect levies anyway. They really do mop up in pursuit, so if that's what you want they aren't bad by any means.

Biggest I've crushed so far range in the 10-13k region, but those were mostly my liege's wars that I fought to defend my own land from being ravaged by war. Typically they only range from 3-5k strong so yeah, a few thousand knights could probably crush that. Now that I have all of Pommerania and Denmark I'm thinking of declaring independence from the HRE (who are allied to Poland), so a more efficient retinue would be good though I like the appeal of massing HC even though from a gameplay perspective they're not as good as one would expect.

If you're doing a close total war where every unit counts the benefits of a pure defense retinues count for a lot less after you mix them with basic levies anyway. For independence I've found the AI is surprisingly willing to let you go if you press faction demands when they are already in a war. If you're opportunistic you often don't even have to fight. (And you can always kidnap your leige for the automatic 100% war score). I wouldn't worry about it, pursuit ending wars faster has a lot of benefits.

On the /v/ threads people kept posting about their germany games and everytime they tried to a "gimmick" game by just anschlussing and annexing more and more Lebensraum. It got stale after a while. Then the whole Willy/Mosely Kaiserreich mod shitposting started and people got increasingly annoyed by even the mentioning of a germany play through.

This playthrough is fun! I started with Cuba, annexed immediately Haiti, started a war with Venezuela and Butan. I let myself occupy a little bit for war exhaustion, big bro USA white peaced the war for me and I continued the war with Butan, until I made most of the reforms I could do early game. The country got flooded by immigrants. This is one of the rare games, where China manages to westernize, so Chinese immigrants flooded my country.

The 38th Presidential Elections are scheduled for the first Tuesday in November. To describe the current political situation as tense would be a vast understatement. Just remove Bosniak by editing the save. After you form Yugoslavia, save the game and edit it using a text editor like Notepad+. Find your country and erase the line that says "culture=bosniak" or something like that.

Small update, I changed the Croatian declaration of independence decision so now it removes Austria-Hungary cores after they form, which is what the original decision was supposed to do

Now Austria-Hungary won't randomly get cores in Croatia upon forming KuK, but I suppose I could make a decision for them to get them if they go reactionary or fascist.

I really don't get the whole autism over cheating. Technically by playing HPM you are cheating since you are modifying the basegame. And really, if you are going by the definition of cheating, you aren't actually doing so, since removing an accepted culture is putting you at a DISadvantage, rather than an advantage.
