Asriel was also whatever. His motivates made sense even if he was selfish, no lasting consequences and hes in a state at the end of the game where hes not going to do it again.

I tend to think humanity flipped their shit, because while a soul combo never happened, it almost did and that's what triggered their intense fear.

However, Chara's hatred of humanity didn't necessarily come immediately. They might have just run away from home, since the intro shows the falling by accident.
