Expanding on this, I'd like to also propose that, because of Africa's abnormally high ethnic diversity, and thus the much larger number of tribal groups operating in any given portion of land, that this also negatively impacted the development of civilizations in Africa in general.

Early classical civilization, from which more advanced forms stemmed from, seemed to rely on a reasonable degree of consolidation of resources without massive amounts of immediate competition. While obviously jungle-hell isn't good for this, places in southern africa have similar climates to europe, but I think the massive quantity of competing groups just stunted any effort to sit down and build up shit. There was always so many parties bickering that it was never possible for one of them to gain enough of a resource advantage to settle down and begin major agricultural and infrastructural developments, which is why almost all noteable Sub-Saharan African civilizations were a result of people already "civilized" encroaching into Africa (ala Ethiopia), or being propped up by the wealth and resources of external powers (West Africa, Zanzibar, etc)

According to the script, Harald has the lowest priority for good tree spots, though the only other civ even specially competing is Kongo, and I'm not sure what the mechanics are beyond just what's in the .xml file.

He's got a moderate bias for coastal starts; that might override good forest spots? I'd like to see a more in-depth breakdown of the coding for that, to be honest.

Is Potala Palace worth the production?

Diplomacy policy slots are kind of pants.

Also, I know that Norway has been working on it for some turns now and I would have to race him for it, though I do know that my city is far more amazing than his in terms of production. Even though I have a spy in his city, I can't really tell how many turns away he is from completion (if there is one I haven't figured it out). I'm so far ahead in tech that I could start on some really awesome modern wonders instead.

It's also kind of funny how he only has one city after almost 300 turns. Poor guy really got fucked by geography.

>>158356536
It's a nice specialization tool. The only gripe I have with it outright is that for each district you make, the price of them increases, globally.

I'd be perfectly okay for each district in a given city being more expensive but when it's global like that it sort of fucks up new cities made in the later game.

Another issue is you can't remove them.

>>158356658
If you think you can beat him for it, I'd go for it. Diplos aren't amazing but if you're a gov without many slots and you have one stuck in a wildcard it's helpful, and besides, tourism is good and all that.

Funny how it doesn't say what the actual bonuses of the district is unless you go into the civlopedia, and even then it isn't highlighted and you have to know the difference just be comparison. Everywhere it just says 'a unique industrial district for Germany'

Turns out its +2 for each adjacent commercial hub and (I think) bonuses on top of the regular adjacency bonuses

What the fuck do I do about amenities? It's one of the mechanics I don't understand at all.

What do multiple sources of the same luxury resource do?

Is there any way to build the Entertainment District early? Kongo Bongo dropped to -6 amenities because I was underpopulated for it (10 population).

Why are the sources of amenities so hecking rare?
>>
>>158357806
Trade is important. If you don't intend to kill all of your neighbours for their phat lewt, you need to get duplicate resources or money and get their resources.

I do agree though, Luxury Resources seem to be fucked, spawn wise. I'll see only a handful of them on the entire map. I've done a few games partially through and never bumped into whales or pearls. It's bizarre.
>>
So enlighten me a bit. Once I unlock factories, I only need 1 industrial district sitting between cities within a 6 tile radius? Does this actively discourage me from making more industry districts? Or does the bonus refer to that of the factory itself, and not the workshop, adjacency production, etc?
>>
>8 civ deity game
>literally 6 civs all close together one stuck around 4 civs in the middle
>nobody takes anyone elses city all game AI literally only takes city states
>>
>>158357806
multiple sources dont stack, trade them

trade different ressources if you lack amenities, also some particular buildings after you build the district can give amenities I believe besides entertainment.

Colosseum is a nice help.

civilopedia fucking sucks there is no way to find out how to satisfy a specific need, for example if you type amenity it will just tell you its needed for cities and you can get it with luxury ressources, it should give a list of all sources, fucking retarded.

Multiple sources kinda stack. I'd rather say they sort. rather than stack.

A luxury only affects 4 cities, so if you have 4 or less you can trade extras. but 8 or more you want to keep 2, 12 cities then keep 3, 16 then keep 4.

You're civ will automatically try to adjust your amenities for the most efficient per city level.

A single amenity will make 2 citizens in a city happy. so you need about half as much amenities as there is pop in a city.
>>
>>158358618
give more score points to things that you don't get through science

More importantly, greatly increase the effect of scientific diffusion between civs, both by improving any trade route bonuses and giving free science by being next to someone who produces a lot. If you make it so your neighbors benefit from your science it disincentivizes heavy investment in science since you'll not get as far ahead.
>>
Civ 6 is basically meant to be played with abundant resources on.

>but anon, that's cheating, you'll have too many luxury resources and you won't need to plan your civs around resources
This would be true if the strategic resources weren't limited to like one or two per fucking continent. Also amenities needed scale with population so even if you have a ton of them, you still need to make deals with other civs into the late game. It only helps with your early game amenities-wise which everyone seems to have a problem with because of aggressive AI and barbs. If you build a city on top of iron or horses w/o abundant resources on, you basically starve every other civ out of building cavalry and swordsmen.

if you have 4 or less cities then multiple luxuries won't. But the moment you have a 5th city up to 8 then the second luxury of the similar luxury resource will be used for that one. so yes they do something for your cities.

One luxury source won't satisfy 12 cities.

It gets more confusing, because certain luxuries (the ones that don't provide a tile bonus) actually provide 6 amenities.

So sometimes you need 3 copies of a luxury to satisfy 12 cities, and sometimes you only need 2.

During the mid-late game, Corporations begin to spawn in civs. These depend on the civ's tech, resources, and locations at the time but eventually everyone gets a corporation in each of the specific fields/industries. They provide bonuses for their civ, and eventually go global in the end game.

When the corporations go global they all begin to hold a certain market share based on cities they're most powerful in. To win a science victory, your corporations need to control 75% of the field in every field.

The fields would periodically wax and wane depending on events in the game, initially locally but later globally depending on what's going on (if a civ with lots of oil goes to war it makes industries that care about oil stronger, or clearing forests hurts industries that care about wood, and so on)

Space Exploration stops being the win condition, and instead opens up a final field and major bonuses for most fields, and gives increasing benefits and access to rare or unique strategic and luxury resources, boosts tourism (so it ties into culture victories) and so on.

tl;dr make Science Victory and Science + Economy Victory.

from the manual

>Luxury resources provide a small bonus to the hex’s output and increase your civilization’s happiness by providing them amenities when improved. Only one source of a specific luxury provides amenities, shared with the four neediest cities in your empire. For example, if you have 2 Citrus resources improved around your capital, only the first will be providing amenities to your empire. You can choose to trade the second Citrus with another civilization for something else you need, like Gold, or another resource

it's intended

Okay, so I was wondering: If I up the game length, say marathon will I effectively have more of units of each era?
I feel like when ever I built a unit, a few turns later they're obsolete. I can't even make proper use of them because the age progresses faster than I build or can move them to actually use them. Not to speak of that I sometimes never build certain units of certain eras because I am busy building other shit..
Would putting the game on Marathon give me more turns for the eras or is this made obsolete because production takes longer, too?

Walls are a tile improvement that give anyone standing on it +4 combat strength. It gives adjacency bonuses once you get masonry and castles: masonry gives +1 gold per adjacent wall, castles gives +1 culture.

thing is, walls have to be linear: a given wall hex can only have two adjacent wall hexes, so the gold and culture both cap at two. The wall also can't bend sharply, your options are
***
and
*.*
.*.
if that makes any sense.

Add on to that the fact walls can only be built on the edges of your area. If you can reliably get loops with them they're pretty alright if still not very good defensively, but it's a pain to do so and if you don't get a decently long chain it would've been better to just use normal improvement anyway.

Tigers aren't really shit, but they're 1-range ranged units that aren't much stronger compared to everything else in their era.

Also that feel when you cant move around your own land because of a dozen opposing religous units....

I had a great situation of citystates being bros in my first game. Playing as Teddy, I had just finished a long war against Spain in which I had captured his capital. Nearly my entire Army was occupied at the far end of the continent when Ghandi somehow snuck a rather large army and a settler past my two frigates that were patrolling my Eastern sea. He dropped a city on my eastern shore right in between the two city-states. They were able to completely hold him off and once I was able to scramble my frigates back and bombard him for a while they took his city and razed it, so I didn't even have to take a warmonger penalty. It was great.

production output wont be a problem since those hill around camp got 2 points plus one food, idk how would you pick the ground but i always stick with water, i say, you build on the hill where your slinger stand, just IF you lose the rush game, can still have a good navy city or possible oil resource in late game.

Just won my first game as Scythia. Yeah, double Cavalry is really OP. You get free movement with the Saka to complement any Horsemen, and in 6 turns you can get 4 units which is a formidable army in Classical Era. Taking cities with them isn't easy, but you can just spam military units so, so easily.

It's worse because Civ VI's production costs are so unbalanced. You get shitty production until you hit Industrial, so the real cost in production is turns. Even if you had all the military unit production boosts and were putting out 1 unit per turn, any competent Scythia would be putting out twice as many troops as you, and they are far more durable because their unique unit is ranged and all their cavalry can heal if they kill.

Whoever came up with this Civ clearly wasn't considering balance, they just wanted them to be OP so that everyone would pick Tomyris and they could trumpet the stat in a few weeks.

>Oh look, 80% of Civ players play Scythia! GURL POWER!
>>
>>158366296

>taking cities with them isn't easy

Let me guess, you don't understand the siege mechanic in this game, do you? Taking cities with melee units has never been easier, and Scythia exploits the shit out of it if you do it correctly.
>>
>>158366295
Honestly, they shouldn't be as severe as they presently are. It seems as though they cripple the AI into doing stupid shit because they focus too heavily on a certain thing.

Confirmed for retarded. Three horsemen can enact the siege mechanic, and if the city has walls it only takes six hits to bring them down, eliminating defenses. >>

A city comes under siege if it is completely surrounded. Once under siege, a city cannot regenerate hitpoints or defenses. A city can become sieged if 3 melee units are evenly spread, but if one dies the siege ends and the city starts regenerating, so it's better to bring more just to be safe.

If there's a river next to the city, the river will stop the zone of control of your nearby melee units, so you might need more than 3 depending on the river tiles in relation to the city.

In essence, it's jaw-droppingly easy to overrun any civ you see as Scythia because she shits out so many units that sieging cities is effortless.

It's difficult to put in words. Here's a shitty mspaint.

On the left is a city with no rivers, and it only takes 3 melee units to start a siege through their zone of control on nearby tiles.

On the right is a highly unlikely river system but for the sake of displaying how it affects zone of control, melee units do not have the ability to enact zone of control across rivers, so you would need additional units near them.

Cities grow too fast and build too slow

The AI is schizophrenic as fuck and can frequently break the rules of diplomacy (eg: declaring a formal war on you without having denounced you. Or, fuck, even met you)

The AI also doesn't have any basic fucking sense, like how two scouts wandering by is not "your army at my borders" and hey maybe a promise to move your troops from my borders should be null and fucking void when the same civ fucking attacks you

The early game is a never ending series of random wars and barb raids, the late game is a boring slog because hammer inflation hits the stratosphere faster than a fucking ICBM

Strategy boils down to one thing: chop rush the fuck out of everything. Early game, late game, doesn't matter. Building a space ship? Hack down that forest boys!

The UI is garbage (I'm convinced the mouse cursor is off by a few pixels) and the crayola aesthetic isn't any fucking clearer than last game. They also fucked up implementation of map pins, which is like a second year computer science level problem.

How does this look? Functional? Or very silly?

I kind of started thinking about it after already plopping down my Campus and Pyramids, so it might be suboptimal. But I'm looking for input nonetheless, to see if my reasoning holds up. Trying to get big gainz on my theater square, and also give out nice freebies for Campus and Commercial Hub. I'll be Suzerain of Amsterdam soon, so I'll get a nice fat bonus to the Comm Hub.

Yeah water mill has to be in a city that's on a river. It's 1 food, 1 hammer and +1 food to any wheat + rice tiles that city works. So it can be good but it's not amazing on it's own. Eventually you should always build it though since it costs nothing in maintenance.

Not sure if there's anything else like the water mill. Lots of wonders require specific placements though (usually adjacent to a specific district and on a specific tile)

>>
>>158369089
Don't build the aqueduct. Seriously, it's a huge waste when the city already has fresh water. You only get +2 housing which is literally the same as 4 farms (and if you have the pyramids, that's 1 builder). But the farms can be replaced with neighborhoods later on (which typically give you +4 or more housing) but the aqueduct is a permanent waste of a tile.

Also, is that a wonder to the far north? If it is you definitely shouldn't be building military stuff beside it - go for holy sites and neighborhoods, they get big boosts.

key districts are commercial(trade routes money merchants are usually good), industrial(important in every district) and after those build some culture and campus's equally in the cities and lean towards one depending on if your going for science/culture, encampments not really needed vs AI

usually i only build 1 entertainment districts and thats usually mid game or so to build coliseum(ai never builds it early), if you get really good campus location you can maybe build it early but early science isn't that strong in civ 6

most important things to plan out is your industrial districts because they give aoe production later to cities within 6 tiles of the district

Factories give their bonus to every city within 6 tiles of the industrial district (9 tiles if you're suzerain of Toronto) so a central location is best. Is that aqueduct placement even legal? River it connects to already passes by the city center hex.

Other anon >>158369507 nailed it, cities pretty much always are built by the rivers so the boost from the aqueduct is minor and requirement is basically to have a mountain or a river 1 tile away, when these also offer benefits for other districts with more active bonuses. I can only envision aqueducts being good on tiny islands maps where rivers become scarce because not enough room for them to spawn or flow through.

Didn't know the AI could plan ahead like that.

Also, look at the size of the continent on the minimap. So much free land to settle and only 3 players. But instead of trying to grab that, both Russia and Arabia just want to close in towards my borders. So I figure, oh well, instead of doing some risky landgrabs close to them, I'll claim this spot on the other side of the continent where I'll get left alone with my rainforests. I dislike the roads in this game not because they're difficult to build but because they're pretty much pointless for a large majority of the game. They don't even increase your movement until the industrial era, and due to the way movement works standard 2 movement units won't even be able to benefit from that until the atomic era.

AI are shit in every game I've played(deity), their science and culture are so low after the mid game. they get early cheats but their bonuses don't scale into mid/late game or something so they're fucking useless. AI needs to prioritize housing I see so many tiny capitals and cities late game

King is certainly better than prince since the AI actually declares war on you if they catch you with your pants down. The barbs weren't annoying even pre-turn 20 if you basically have a slinger

Honestly, even if it's a bug, that's one actually exciting find. Those should exist more in Stellaris. An asteroid like this is a reason to go to war. That's neat, we need more of that.

They're good with maneuver and any try-hard can get himself into a bad situation easily. However, they have a very obvious problem with technology, as I actually fought a civ in Medieval Era which could only horsemen, warriors and slingers. Same thing happened in another game with a civ in Modern Era.

I have never had an AI be friendly with me, even in games where I played completely pacifist and actively tried to form some sort of friendship

Idk, 1.3 has turned everything on its head. The old optimal builds aren't optimal any more, fleet strength numbers are a lie, and my economy is in the shit despite me doing exactly the same I've always done.
>>
>>158381662

My experience says that even during early wars where the unit tech is on par, the AI seems so afraid to throw units to soften up yours that it never actually attacks unless it has a massive advantage (which means there was a clear misplay on my part).

This means that even if the AI declares a war against you and you are outnumbered, as long as you place your units correctly and you've built a shit ton of archers, you'll eventually win because the AI doesn't seem to be able to use the numbers advantage in its favor.
>>
>>158381817
Planet are of course better but you do have to develop them. And that takes quite a bit of time. 18 minerals from a simple mining station is a lot.

Science is a fucking joke in 6. I just shit out endless cities, only build industrial/economic districts, and still somehow end up researching shit faster than I can build/upgrade it.

Well, tried both 'version' (codex and reloaded). They both wont start. I installed the correct redist (x64), ran the game as admin, and no such luck.

Am I missing anything or am I just really bad with computer? you tell me. I bought, pirated tons of games and at least the game showed some kind of message to me if it failed to launch (or just altogether launch correctly).

>>158382248

Funny, I tried both and they worked just fine for me. I tried Codex first before realizing it didn't have the Aztec DLC and switched to Reloaded.

Did you not apply the crack as instructed? Because that seems to be the main problem most normies have when they can't get pirated shit to run.

>redist
The reloaded version has directx and redist installer option at the end.

I applied the crack (even tried having the installer copy it automatically) and ran the game as admin. No luck.

Well one thing i'm certain is i tried running the game with my steam running. In the past, if it tries connecting to steam, it will just launch a product page on steam, no?

I did apply the crack (tried automatically, and manually). I also tried blocking the exe (and not blocking) with firewall. The game just failed to launch for whatever reason. It instead created a .dmp file (dump?) in the installation folder. I tried opening to see what's what, but its all garbage characters.

I'm tempted to just buy the game from steam and run it and have steam take care of all the required redistributables and directX, see if it will run, then refund and retry reinstall the reloaded to see if it will run then.

All of this while waiting for my stupid key. Is the game even worth it at this point? Maybe I'd just play BF1 instead...
>>
>>158382765
Eh, it's Stellaris. 1.3 Improved it and changed up some stuff, so old builds don't work. It shouldn't affect you ovemuch as new player. There is the whole, "Why would you bother getting good at a game with no replay value?" but that aside, its as good a time as any to get into it.

Well, it's only a "bad" time in the sense that no-one can spoonfeed you an optimal strategy right now because no-one knows what the new optimal strategy is.

If you want a basic early-game play, minerals are king at the start and you should spend all your minerals on building new mines to get yet more minerals.

It doesn't matter if Steam is running or not. If you fail to apply the crack it's going to try connecting depending on your network settings.

Literally just copy the contents of the crack folder from the mounted ISO and paste it in the installation directory for civ 6. Replace any files that match. It's that simple.

Is there any way to actually win Religious on Immortal with minimal war (ie not Spain)? The AI spams religion incessantly. I chopped two (2!!) fucking holy districts out super early greedy as Egypt and still lost the fucking last GP on Emperor.

Also is there any confirmed ways to please the AI? I'd really like to ally with a civ and be bitch buddies together. I've yet to buddy-buddy with any civ. They don't accept my delegates and embassies and refuse all my shit with even (close to 0) relation.

I've found myself in the exact opposite position: I had an early war against Sumeria its war carts prevented from deploying archers (had to sacrifice a couple of warriors to prevent a flanking maneuver). In another game I had Tomyris actually sneaking past my army to destroy the units in the rear. The only thing that saved me was that I beelined to crossbowmen and they saved me from a horsemen onslaught. I lost a couple of civilian units (a worker and a settler) to her city-state ally, which went deep into my territory while I was putting pressure on her cities.

Like someone said, it's prolly the best time. They balanced a lot of things and the end game is more relevant.

Before it was like -

"Yeah! 80k fleet power i've pretty much wo-"
