To be frank, I don't really have an objectively "favourite" character.
I just really like those characters personalities the most, and their battle capabilities.

>Leo is an enjoyable character who I can respect for his combat abilities and how he's cool, calm and collected, which helps makes the moments where he's in an embarrassing or silly situation more funny. It also helps that he's a pretty good magic unit and a fine Dark Knight, and Brynhildr, while not being amazing, is a pretty good weapon for him.
>Felicia is a pretty cute cinnamon roll (more so than Elise, in my opinion), and has some really charming supports with many of the other characters. Sure, as a Maid, she isn't amazing, but when reclassed into a magic class, she's a pretty damn fine unit, able to heal allies and kick ass all at the same time.

It depends on which of the three games you're playing since your class options vary, but the biggest change is mainly which servant you get first, as Jakob is more useful when he can come in early to build weapon ranks in the cavalier classes(assuming you're willing to spend a seal on those), while Felicia will do alright as a maid or strategist, and while the skills from her reclasses are great, she won't be able to scratch anyone while stuck with physical weapons unless you forge the crap out of them, at least shurikens can be used to debuff things until you have enough rank for(and don't fuck up at getting) the Flame Shuriken, which only Saizo, Ninja Corrin or their kids would probably otherwise consider using, and Saizo isn't available in Conquest.

If you're using them just for their personal skills(i.e. doing nothing but pair up and transport), Jakob is better for tanking and Gunter is better for getting more offense out of your attacks, and in either case a female can S rank for better bonuses, there's plenty of other options for gaining Cavalier as a class if you're male, especially in Conquest.

Pretty good list. I've enjoyed the RD talk recently, so I'll offer some personal experience.
I've only done 2 transferless HM playthroughs and I haven't trained all 70-some units. These runs were done with no boosters aside from Arms Scrolls. All chapters were completed within the maximum BEXP turn limits except for 3-P because Skrimir's AI doesn't care about turn limits. My experience may not be equivalent to others', but it should be similar.

Nailah: Wins 1-8, 1-E, and 4-4 on time for you in addition to being tower material with no effort
Tibarn: Basically the same reasons as Nailah, a little less critical to winning early Part 4 chapters but is the best unit available right out of the box
Elincia: Amiti and Stun make up for inconsistent Str, incredible utility, can take Imbue w/ 20+ Mag and almost never need healing
Tauroneo: Can take a Master Crown as-is to make 3-12 and especially 3-13 easier, also allows him to help out in Part 4
Sanaki: Mag caps fast, Prf tome is very strong, starts with A-rank Thunder, high movement in 4-3 is good, and she can build up fairly easy levels in 4-P

Titania: Doesn't have the same immediate power or durability as my other top-tier picks
Jill: Lack of transfers hurts her the most, it's so hard to get her going.
Aran: Speed problems make his Def less valuable than it should be
Kieran: Slow miss machine. Geoffrey, Marcia, and Calill do more to win 3-9 for me than he does
Mordecai: Can't think of a reason to deploy him after part 2
Black Knight: Has trouble keeping up in 1-E, and then he's gone. Unnecessary in 3-6.
Oscar: Too average to keep up with HM enemies, competes with a lot of the best units in the game for EXP
Boyd: Slow, mediocre damage, and inaccurate to start. Never had a good one, though considering his growths it's possible I could just be unlucky.

Nailah's availability isn't good enough to be top tier IMO.

Camilla is pure fan service pandering, and the game treats her as such. That doesn't stop people from discussing her hidden depths with a zeal, however it often falls flat since there seems to be an unusual amount of headcanons about her.

Here's my take on Camilla: she's got no potential because she wasn't meant to be more than eye candy and fan service. Her role in the main story is tiny, her supports are pretty bad, she's the worst offender of the player worshipping disease that plagues this game, and the characters don't act normally around her. Her entire character is an insult to basic human interaction in fiction; people wouldn't be okay with someone like Camilla around, and the Nohrian family, especially Corrin, wouldn't put up with her trying to bone them all the time. She's a suffocating, mentally unstable person who's projecting her own problems onto others or downright threatens or coerces others to get what she wants, yet she's treated as a good person and character both by the game and the fans, and I can't understand that.

You know you have problems writing a character when every conversation she's in seems forced an unnatural, and that the people talking to her are reacting in ways no sane person would. Throughout her supports, all of the things she does or says accumulates, and in my opinion the bad things far outweigh the postives; even if she does or says something that on its own wouldn't be too offensive, the fact remains that if you combine all of the shitty behavior in her supports, she comes across as a very horrid person. She forces Suzukaze to join her little tea parties against his will, she threatens Severa, constantly makes Corrin uncomfortable and infantilizes Takumi. I'm sure she does more, but those are the things that stick out.

A lot of the times those "other units" have distinct advantages or disadvantages over their peers. Or are we going to start saying Isadora's a clone of Sain/Kent/Lowen or Duessel one of Franz/Gilliam(?) or Geoffrey of Oscar/Kieran/Titania because hurr durr same class? For someone who preaches about efficiency you sure don't bother to learn much about it.

So I don't see how the variety is useless, both from a narrative and gameplay standpoint. Sure max efficiency tends to focus around a small group of units, but what about other games? What about people who do shit like Death Roulette PoR and the like? You have no variety in Fates. You can't even change up runs because the cast is so small that you're almost always using teams that will look the same outside of 1-2 small differences.

The unit variety and the way they're layered throughout the game exists as a narrative way of continuing to get the feeling of a growing army, and the gameplay reason of giving you more units to consider or to have units to fall back on if an early unit got RNG-screwed or the like.

And I say this as someone who enjoys the fuck out of Conquest. Conquest is a strong game, the unit variety is not one of those strengths.

Awakening has a "limitless" internal level cap. Units can reach level 20 in a class and then reset their level with a class change as many times as they want; therefore it's usually better to promote and class change early in order to acquire skills more quickly.

In contrast, Fates functions more like a traditional Fire Emblem game, in that you have a hard internal cap at "Level 40" (Level 20 promoted). Because of this, you're actively sacrificing stat gains if you promote early, in which case it should only be considered for units like Charlotte, who are being deployed more for their pair-up bonuses than their individual combat, and thus benefit from having early promotion boosts.
