Considering playing Final Fantasy VIII blind and want some advice as to a definitive yet "fair" playthrough.

Playing for the plot is fine. VIII is one of the games where grinding is almost counter-productive. Enemies scale with your level so you can play at whatever pace you want.

The plot is kinda convoluted but the gameplay is alright. Also, draw from every boss you encounter, as it might hold something good.

The plus side is, I'm probably ok to skip some corn grinding for dunes, because I already have the basket, mask, knife, a couple tickets, all the gigantuars, and now have 44k corn banked. Not gonna bother with the spoopy aura, because if I even wind up using her at all, I likely won't be using lid for longer than a month or so. Not worth saving up that much for those auras that are only slightly better than the attack +10% we're getting soon anyway.

Reminder that the 70k trust moogle isn't even worth its weight in. You need 820 energy worth of runs to get it, and it gives 10% trust to one unit. Meanwhile if you ran earth shrine with all that energy 5 units would all get about 8% trust.

Drain is good if you have a job with high physical damage, which is why its good for warrior jobs and specially samurai since it has both high damage AND low hp so its easy to sustain yourself from your attacks while building up your enhanced earth and wind resistances

cure is still better in most contexts and in multiplayer as a healer since it also removes a debuff which many single player bosses like to stack on you.

Regen I know nothing about since Ive never used it and never seen anyone use it either.
