You could beat that game in Hard mode with the very worst of your cast, it matters less here than in any other FE I'd argue. Add that to the fact that FE8's greatest strengths are probably in its character design and some of the writing, and a character's maximum potential is probably one of the least important factors to me.

Plus my first Vanessa got blessed as fuck, one of the best ever RNG characters I've ever gotten in a run.

Attack speed, it determines who gets doubled in games with speed mitigating factors from weapon weight. Games prior to Thracia had direct weight mitigation, that one and the GBA series used a CON stat for that(low growth in Thracia, fixed aside from promotion gains on GBA).

The Tellius games use Str as the stat that counteracts weapon weight so that even mages have a use for the stat, with CON relegated to carrying or shoving other units around.
