day 2/3 i think
movement is pretty much done, i can input any speed i want and the script will handle it for me. got rid of most bugs, there's some tilting when you climb stairs or try to jump in small spaces but eh, nothing breaks anymore i think. i got a bug at some point where if i jumped into the bottom of a solid tile it would go through keeping the speed i had before i entered the block. ill implement some weapons now i guess + wind physics (worms-like game)

If you're near it, it will first walk closer to the stairs and then get on them.
Once you're on them, pressing up/right or down/left will move you 8 pixels at a time on the stairs, holding it will just make you keep going.

I had been dragging my feet for a while and decided to finally start something. The idea was to quickly mock up a character design, then split its parts for animation in spriter. I'm too unfamiliar with these tools. I spent an hour just looking at the different brush options, and I can't even figure out how to get the anti-aliasing the fuck off to use the bucket tool. It was only supposed to be the character design, but that linework's not salvageable. I'll use a place holder for the time being, but I'd have been much more enthusiastic if I could get it half passable. Looks like I have to go back to the drawing board.

The designer is the one who makes a spreadsheet with all the stats of the game, the one who figures out the math behind damage numbers and how they interact with things.

Take WoW for example, the class designers don't go "well pyroblast should hit hard!" and then leaves it there, they fuck about with numbers and make equations where the damage of pyroblast is figured out. It's a relatively simple skill by itself (400% of spell power) but then you have to add in crit, haste, versatility, mastery and all the other skills the fire mage uses, how they interact, how they sim out for damage and how they work out in damage in the real game with real players. Then decide if fire mage damage is too high or too low, decide pyroblast is where you'll nerf them and change it to be 390% of spell power.

I never said they don't implement the numbers themselves, just giving the distinction between saying "x needs a nerf" (which anyone can say, it doesn't need an "idea guy" to come up with that) and how best to properly nerf x (taking into account everything related to x).

Another example, a "tech tree" is an idea. A designer would have to give each tech node a science value to unlock it, likely increasing in value towards the end of the tree. And all those values have to be something easily attainable (but not too easy) at various stages of the game. That's a bit more work than having the idea for it.

So I've been messing with GMS the last few weeks, and decided I want to convert a tabletop war game ruleset I came up with to an actual game. Before I dive in I was wondering a few things though:

1 - How do you manage height differences in a 2d game, even if it's isometric? (Elevated units get to-hit bonus, for example)

2 - Should I bother looking into using basic 3d blocks for terrain or should I do it in an isometric style (what I'm more comfortable with).

3 - If I do use an Isometric style, is it a shit ton more work to make the camera able to rotate the map so you can see units hiding behind buildings and stuff?

You store the height in a grid and draw the tile with a lower y coordinate (further up on screen). The bonus can be derived from that stored value.

Isometric is super fine, once you wrap your head around it. 2D logic is easier and so is the art. Logic stays the same for isometric, just the jump from data -> drawing on the screen is a bit different.

Rotating camera may be a bitch and requires 4 sides of every element instead of one to draw. How about dealing with transparency instead to find hidden units?

got proyectiles working, they can be affected by gravity, wind direction, how much the player charges his shot (not seen here because different charge times affected the parabola and i wanted to check if the shots were angled correctly), and how much they weight. Also, i can make new proyectiles with different sprites and damage on the fly because of how i wrote the code. they can't be affected by solid items yet, after i implement that they should be able to bounce.

Very fair points; thank you for the critique. I have to say that a lot of the "density" of the piece was intentional. My previous game's soundtrack was extremely sparse (and I feel like it worked there), but I wanted to try something different. With this new piece, I don't necessarily want the listener to focus on individual instruments, but rather on changing textures as the instruments move between different playing styles.

For example, the first movement slowly adds instruments, and there is some time in which they all play. Sometime later, though, the playing gets very staccato, and it does get sparse. Even if the instruments aren't completely dropping out (though the drums do at some point), I think the change of texture makes for good variety.

lol, I see. Actually, those ostinatos are meant to be a sort of arrhythmic drone, and not "fighting for the foreground." Maybe I should decrease their volume further. Them going in and out of time was completely intentional; I copied each of those tracks, and subtly slowed down the second (so it has an interesting tuning effect, as well as falling in and out of rhythm).

I will defend some of the "business," as I personally like it. Perhaps balance might fix some of the issues you're talking about. I like the arpeggio ostinatos in the first movement, but it wouldn't hurt to decrease their volume (I don't think that movement would work if they cut out completely). The third movement could probably do with more balance work; I'll see what I can do.

As for the last movement, I'm glad you liked it. You're right - it might not fit perfectly, but I do think some break was needed from the 3rd movement. If the piece looped straight from 3rd to 1st, that would might be too much.

So as you may have heard I'm taking a break from Charlotte's Dream and making a new thing. It's gonna be a short little game with the goal of finishing it in 2 months, because I really just want to have a finished game to my name at this point and Charlotte will take me another two years at this rate. The game is about a knight girl who's venturing through a castle to fight a dark god. It's a platformer with more of a focus on combat. The new odin sphere like that other guy mentioned is much closer to dmc4 in terms of attack response and cancelling properties. It has that same thing as dmc4 where cancelling a combination of moves in a specific way kind of creates it's own actions.

You can get rigged base meshes for free pretty easily and build from those. My point is that vanillaware's combat system quality has gone up since muramasa. Dragon's Crown was a clear improvement and sported the large moveset and more creative combinations thing. Odin sphere added a good feeling to everything that I've not yet encountered outside of dmc4.

That there are very limited orders in which you can do the attacks because they require a certain position or having done earlier attacks. Mostly talking about the air attacks here.

As long a combat system has enough attacks that can be executed without pre-requisites, all with a different type of knockback effect on the enemy, then it's mostly all good.
It's cost effective too.
For example if you make 5 attack animations and make it so they are executed when you mash the attack button, then you only have 1 combo of 5 attacks.

Make those 5 attacks all different in their effects, give them their own input that you can use at any time, and you give the player the option to mix them in any order, repeat them, cancel them, and you already have a small combo system that is fun to experiment with. However, to give casuals something to work with as well you can add a few 3 hit combos then can spam brainlessly.

The material on that effect (the one on the floor) renders a two-dimensional image that's constantly billboarded to the camera- even if the camera rotates, it views the material as if it were creating a transparent section on the screen, with the start texture behind it.

Here's a pic of what I did just now, I'll upload a webm as well. Basically I unwrapped just the section I wanted to texture, and under the texture tab I created a new brush texture, set it to type Image, grabbed a cloth texture from google images. over in the UV/Image editor window I set the brush Texture to use the image we just made. Set it to stencil mode, and set the strength way down, I also tinted the color slightly to be more grey. painted one direction, then rotated the stencil and painted the other direction.

Came out a bit better than I thought, the only other way I can think to do this is to have quality art skills and actually paint folds of cloth.

Added more frames to the spin jump and improved the shape of it, changed up the chest techy detail piece to look more astronauty (I hope).

I have a bit more shading to do to it I think. Last progress of the day. i was able to load "map data" from text files given the width and height of the map. With this being possible i will implement code so you can draw your own stages in-game and export them to a text file to be loaded later. pic related is kinda fucked up after some point but you get the idea.

Allowing entities to move on top of moving platforms took little code to implement, but I just know using this with other enemies is going to break something.

I'll probably limit these to transitioning between areas of a map, and not in combat-heavy spaces.

Personally for me it's between Quest 64 or Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII had the perfect pacing. Battles happened, weren't too hard and they didn't spam the random encounters as much as some other games. You could play the story just going from place to place wherever you needed to go without stopping and having to farm for more exp and shit. It felt natural and the battles never lasted too long.

Quest 64 because there's no other game really like it. You can move around while enemies are attacking but it's still turn-based, so you get a mix of real life reaction times/strategy/aiming, plus turn based rpg magic/attacks. Only the camera needed improvement really. I also liked how you could exploit some spells to be super powerful/invincible, not enough games let you sandbox in an rpg like that.

Paper Mario was fun but whenever I missed an attack I always got pissed and felt like I needed to restart. Dragon Warrior was heavy on the farming, you get your ass kicked by slimes right at the beginning. I don't really like combo/timed combat like FFXIII, too stressful and the battles last way too long with bosses that do massive damage attacks for no reason, and you can't even pay attention to the pretty graphics and animations because you're staring at meters. At least with FFVII you could pause the battle while you were picking your attack. Ended up getting stuck at one of the bosses and never even finished the game.

Persona 3's battle system feels a bit boring/generic even with the summons and the battles also drag on for no reason. I think the game would have been better without a combat system at all. I hated the tower dungeon, just want to see more of the story and their lives at and after school. Didn't finish this game either. Been avoiding playing Persona 4 because of this. I wouldn't mind trying out the fighting game though.

Don't be afraid to model the axe head and handle as separate meshes. As long as they intersect, they don't necessarily have to be welded together as a single solid object.

It's also sometimes fun when trying to make curved objects to deselect all, choose vertex select mode, hold control and just click in a connect the dots kind of way to draw an outline of what you want to make.

You don't have to use those vertices in your model, but it's kind of like a construction guideline to model towards.

I came up with a simple solution so I don't have to create 5 of every shop, for each tier. Now they just scale with your level / 10. The contents of the shop stay the same until you hit level 10, 20, etc. then they are regenerated one tier higher. I also had a problem where some items don't have anything at certain tiers, so the shop would be empty (like there's only tiers of boots at 1/3/5 to save myself time). There's a 60% chance the item is generated at the requested tier level, and a 20% chance each of being 1 tier higher or 1 tier lower. If it can't find an item it rolls the dice again until it does.

Turn based

You have six seconds per turn. If you don't pick in those six seconds, your character patiently Waits.

Simultaneous resolution of everyone's actions.

No randomness at all. If you hit me, and I hit you, in the same turn - then we both take damage, and depending on our HP, maybe we both die.

Episodic. Meaning, the game servers turn on MWF 7 pm, and they turn off 10 pm. (I'm open to different shards all running different schedules, but one shard will always run the same schedule.)
Permadeath within one episode. If Monday at 7:15 pm you die, you don't get a new life until Wednesday at 7 pm.

No XP. No Skill points.

Capture the flag for artifacts.

If your team captures an artifact, your whole team gets a buff. (More damage delivered, less damage taken, more total HP, slow heal on HP, etc.)

If your team uses a curse artifact on another team, they all get a debuff.

Your team builds a temple, and should guard it because it has artifacts in it. You can actually guard it, because the world doesn't continue to be playable outside the episodes.

Because it's turn-based, because it has simultaneous resolution and no randomness... I believe I can support crazy numbers of players in one shard. Like, "Battle of Helm's Deep" kind of numbers of players.

Gross. I mean more power to you, you could probably market that and retards would buy it. I have no idea why people like mass pvp or pve, every single example I've ever played it turns into a zerg fest where you have no idea what the fuck is going on and you basically don't make a difference.

I mean if you count Alterac Valley as "mass pvp" then you can definitely make a difference if you queue with a small group or are an AOE class. But having played shit like EVE Online mass combat basically is about sheoparding retards and exploiting mechanics that essentially turn multiple people into broadcasted commands.

I mean persistent conflict PvP is cool but that's different. That's like battles are fought in small groups but other peoples battles have an effect on the war effort and influence your battles.

To add, what I mean is that there are people who are saying that Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raiders is a newbie/innocent explorer who almost fell apart after killing that one guy, but then throughout the game she moves and acts like a seasoned soldier, mowing down all these mercenaries and thugs like she was the punisher.

There's a lot of different ones I like and some that I really enjoy but haven't finished. I don't know if it would be fair to list unfinished ones as favorites but if you're mostly looking for inspiration, try playing a couple of different RPGs yourself so you have the first hand experience. Though I'm sure you've probably already done that. Otherwise, what I really like about an RPG and think makes it good is an interesting theme, active strategy and responsive battling. So three examples: Legend of Dragoon, Pokemon, Earthbound.

I'll start with Pokemon. The battling system isn't so great anymore but it has a good idea of strategy. The most obvious thing is type advantage. Weakness and resistance plays a great deal in how you balance your team and pokemon. Special and Physical damage also adds more depth to the variation of your team. While Pokemon is a kid's game and that can be plowed through with grinding and the most powerful attack moves, it still has this underlying strategy. Making it possible to play the game without powerleveling. By learning proper tactics and customizing your team, you can use strategy to complete the game.

Some other honorable mentions about strategy would be SMT or SMT-like games. They do really simple stuff like type advantage as well but it could be "hit an enemy with its weakness or critical gives an extra turn but if the player misses or uses a resisted technique, they lose a turn". Digimon:Cyber Sleuth does the type thing too but they have elements and memory type; Such as data, vaccine and virus. Like Pokemon's dual types, your team can have double advantage or weakness against an enemy.

Earthbound is another game I mentioned and it's also mostly aimed towards children as well. I like to list games like these because they're very simple but still done well. The simplicity allows the theme(s) to be seen more easily. The game is about adventure, friendship and paranormal things.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4 has a really good battle system.
Epic Battle Fantasy 3 has much better pacing though.
I recommend both, they're free anyways. And they're both 100% turnbased without qtes or timelimits, something that I'm a big fan of (but barely see anymore).

As the player, you basically travel the whole world in game. You meet many different people who help you and even find your friends that join your party. Through out all this you're fighting aliens and robots. Going to pyramids, stonehenge, an imaginary world and some places that seem like monk monasteries. All this stuff is pretty random but fits together. It makes each part of the game different and feel like progression but reminds the player constantly of the general ideas in game. Another interesting thing I like to point out is that Earthbound is modeled similar to a typical RPG but has those small tweaks. Having psychic powers instead of magic, using bats instead of swords, being in the 1990s, making the usual buff hero character have all the healing and shield spells while his dainty, female counterpart/love interest has all the high damage, offensive spells. Rolling HP is also great along with skipping weak battles. Earthbound really has so many, simple good ideas. Mother 3 makes the battling better with musical combos.

Talking about combos, that gets to my last point. A responsive battle system. Legend of Dragoon is my example and any who has played that game should know why. It's a turn-based RPG but character's in your party have additions. These are combo attacks that the character will do in battle. So instead of pressing X and just watching an attack, you actively have to tap X to keep the combo going. Timing is key and there are times you have to press O to stop an enemy's counter. This fixes a huge problem of RPGs getting stale from playing them so long. ATBs can help with this too.

I just played through KotoR again and it was very fun. I've been really playing a bunch of turn based RPG's and action RPG's recently to build up some immediate experience so I'm not just operating on nostalgia or guesses in regards to why I'm doing things mechanically or in the story.

Based on talking to people as well I think its very hard to please everyone with a system mechanically, which is why there is such variance within tabletop RPG's and RPG's in video games. I have however learned a lot about myself and what I like in RPG's. What I personally noticed playing KotoR again was how close to the D&D 3.5 ruleset it was, the last time I played it I was like 13 and had no idea what I was doing mechanically. I just pumped everything into strength and a little into Constitution and let the game roll spamming flurry. Talking with friends this is how a lot of them played too, but there's actually a lot that I never noticed before that leaves room for fun in the game when you're playing it with more experience.

I planned my character out from the beginning, taking min max feats/stats to break the game and it worked well. I was full Dark Side but realized I had so much force points I didn't need the reduction in cost that alignment-matching powers gives, I was heading light side for the gear.

Much more builds open up when you realize you can hold off leveling your character until you become a Jedi. I also have another character I could post where I made him like Darth Vader and dumped dex/force stuff and just wore power Armor, he isn't as high level and he doesn't have the full evil 1d8 extra melee damage bonus yet.
