Cut the trailer down by quite a lot.

Think this will get me through greenlight?

Less emphasis on your pretty weak looking attack animation. All the attack scenes follow the same beat so it gets repetitive and boring. Try and only show interesting things in each scene.

Good examples is hitting the rock back. Slipping under something and attacking twice. All the dodging scenes.

Timing of first part is no good. Maybe have drop in and then add the music in as a lead up.
>>
>>157974013
i think you need to show more zones it seems kinda small in the trailer.

If it means I can quickly do more animations easily I can add more attacks and make a more cuhrayzee battle system.

Considering adding a Paper Mario TTYD/Kingdom Hearts type encyclopedia for items/creatures/topics the player comes across in the RPG I'm making.

Considering so far adding two main states - 'complete' and 'mention' kind of like how the Pokedex has different entries for a capture and just a discovery. Perhaps item tooltips could change depending on your knowledge of a item - only hearing about a legendary sword might give you some info but you wont be able to know the entirety of its effects until you see it first hand.

Apparently I'm not on the right track. The import of those obj files didn't attach the textures automatically. The textures aren't even identifiable in their current form and I'm not going to click 100+ objects and add textures to them by trial and error.

Originally I imported the obj files into 3ds max, then converted that to blender eventually when 3ds max crashed and didn't want to run ever again even after hours of troubleshooting. That kept the textures connected.

This is starting to turn into a dead end and it's taking up way too much time just for a fucking placeholder. I'm continuing with the old model.

Making the stairs collision based is a pain in the dick. I had so much bugs on them that I went for an alternative approach. One object at the start and end of stairs. They detect the player and when you press up or down create a "player dummy" that isn't affected by gravity. It only goes up and down in diagonal direction and can attack like the normal player, and only will change into the original player when you reach the top or bottom of the stairs, or if an enemy hits you.
Ignore the mixels is just a test room.

Finishing games is important because it forces you to get good at the especially boring shit, like menus, options, and saving. However, forcing yourself to do these things when you're working on a jokey little shitgame is difficult because you know most if any people who play it are going to play it for a minute at most.

Work on some real shit, then you'll have a real reason to finish.

Looks great. Progress is good.

I played with your logo a bit, see what you think.
>>
>>157990539

>>157973652
basically that. draw stuff until it looks good.

free tips:

start with big, white circles. flashes on frame 1/2 look p good.
the smaller you make the next frame the faster the particle "contracts". usually you want to make the first few frames make it lose the most mass, then have it slowly fizz out.
if it's got a complex texture, tackle each individual part at a time then see if it works well together.
also make sure the backgrounds work with the particle. if it's got dark outlines, it will fade into a black background, but will contrast against a bright one.

most important one: particles gain a lot from moving or appearing in formations. try to think of some good behavior patterns for particles, so they look good. like making explosions travel actoss specific enemy parts, or shoot out in "whips" or those cool rotating circles of explosions in hard corps, etc.

that's all i can tell off the top of my head.

The art in that game is not terrible, especially since it's going for the old school FPS feel. There's definitely some things that could be improved like the HUD and some of the gun models. But it's still better than a lot of indie games.

Also since when did you think /agdg/ doesn't like low poly? Cause many people here do like low poly. Proper low poly, not the flat shaded "meme poly", which looks quite bad.

As for repetitive gameplay, there's nothing wrong with having something repeat as long as it's fun and challenging. That's kind of the whole point of a game, there's a gameplay loop that you go through that challenges you. Some games have a shorter loop, some a longer loop.

still trying to figure out an efficient method to make family trees. Everything I've pulled from google shows stuff tracking only one parent, which is ridiculous because pedigree charts need both parents.

I'm considering cheating. If I compare the 'genetic code' (just a long list of ints I'm using to simulate genetics) of two animals, I can make a genetic similarity chart, which is actually more useful for breeding than a pedigree chart. The downside is you wouldn't know if you are breeding an animal with its brother or uncle or cousin, you'd just know 'they're half related' or '20% related' or whatever. I guess I could refine it some more though. Anything to avoid having to do shit like 'mother's father's mother's sister's daughter's son'.

Can someone help me understand the differences between licenses? GNU is, to my understanding, 'never sell without releasing the source code', which is the same as saying 'always free', right? OSI is 'you can sell but you have to let other people distribute it for free'? MIT is 'do whatever the hell you want'?

GNU is "provide source for anyone who can come in contact with your program legally" used only in in-house software - no sharing needed outside of company. Provide to the public - everyone who needs it gets it, be it via internet or you send them an flash drive if requested. If you sell it you only need to give source to those who purchased it. Tho tgey can share it.

also, I noticed problems on the model you uploaded. to fix them, do the following:

1)goto edit mode on each mesh,

Is Maya LT any good for 3D modeling?

I want to get into modeling again (for my game) and I was thinking Maya LT. I have 3DSMax and Maya installed, but they're like 4 years old and I was hoping to get a new version that's slimmed down to the basics (that I just need... I don't need advanced scripting interfaces) with more modern formats that are easy to pump out. I hear it even has a unity feature, so yay.

Sorry if this is a bad post, but I need someone to point me in the right direction

I want to make a visual novel-esque game, or a sort of point-and-click slideshow sort of game. I already know how to do this using tools like Ren'py.

However, Ren'py only lets you compile your game as an executable, something people will have to download and play. It does not let me embed my game directly into a website, like you would with a flash game.

If I want to make simple point-and-click games that can be embedded into a browser page, what would be a good option? Is Flash the go-to, or are there better options? Is HTML5 related? I have almost no knowledge of how the internet works.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

One caveat of it having a lot of documentation is that a lot of its documentation is garbage either oversimplified or not well explained.

>>
>>158007574
>macros
>they do it for free
>they take their deprecated syntax very seriously

In all seriousness, that is actually good advise. What's too big is what you define as too big. Focus the game around core aspects like party-size can prove to be very beneficial towards the game's success as opposed to gearing the gameplay aspects around your environment. However, the dungeon crawler genre typically has a specific focus (in due part to early hardware limitations)

>>158007472
Pick a nice prime number below 11. I only recommend primes because dungeon crawlers are RPG and character specific narratives (usually). What does that have to do with anything? Well, imagine if you pick a non-prime. You'll naturally start setting up dichotomies based on divisible numbers and your group will lose its individuality. You may have the "healers" and the "tanks" and the "casters" or whatever roles you may instill. A role should be something, certainly, but you shouldn't impose a divide in your party based on their roles. Each member should be unique and add something new to the party through its different combination of characteristics.

It's why in peer-reviewed studies of family psychology that researchers find that families with a prime number of children more equitably treat their children than families with, say, 4 children or 6 children.

I mean there's a reason: whether or not it's a good one is questionable. I didn't think it actually happened though; or, if it does occur, that it must be marginal seeing as here are barely any Jews in Poland today (3 million before Nazi Germany compared to 3000 today).

Quite honestly, Jews just don't want to live in Poland any longer. There are better economic, political, and cultural opportunities in countries like the US and Israel. Poland was great when we had a monopoly over the inns and taverns along with lending, especially when compared with the forced exiles of Spain and the genocidal-activities in medieval England, but it just doesn't cut it anymore.

Even before Hitler, I feel that Jews in Poland felt pretty disenfranchised and were starting to leave. At least, that's what my Polish grandmother would tell me. She, herself, was born into a Catholic household but converted after meeting my grandfather when her family had emigrated in the late 20s.

There are no kings' favors for us in Poland, and the local population still feels pretty bitter and disconnected from us. Surely, every once in a while, I'll meet some Pole that is learning Hebrew for God knows what reason, but it's flattering on the surface and pretty appropriating when investigated deeper.

There's two options I'd recommend.

One is Game Maker which can export to HTML5.

The other is picking up JavaScript and a random HTML5 game engine. If you google "HTML5 game engines" you're bound to find some good free ones.

I don't know how streamlined Renpy is though, but chances are HTML5 engines are more bare bones and you'll have to do some reading yourself on it to get images to render, sounds to play, etc.
>>
>>158009576
Thank you for responding.

The difficulty does not matter to me, I just want to know what tool to be using. Like I said, I have no clue how in-browser or internet applications work, so I have no clue how to start other than with flash, which I'm sure is very outdated by now.

I did not know Game Maker had browser support. I will start with that, then try Javascript. Thank you.
>>
>>158009668
Beware that Game Maker, unlike random HTML5 game engines, costs dosh. (officially at least)

And the HTML5 exporter itself is sold separately from the engine. Both of them were on sale a month ago for 10 bucks but not anymore I reckon.

The idea is that you've got psychic powers, and you're running around fighting monsters with them- but you've also got psychic powers and pulling levers with Telekinesis, figuring out characters' secrets with telepathy, that kind of thing.

The only problem is that I'm absolute shit with art and graphics. How much of a crime would it be to make the game text-only, twine style? Would the Game Police kick my shit in? Or should I just go with Programmer art until then?

Implemented MGS style vision cones to the minimap. Quaternions are an absolute fucker.

Next up is to get them to change colour based on the current alert phase. Might make the individual minimap elements smaller in general. Thoughts?

I'm not that guy.

I've coded text games before, with locked doors and keys and levers.

It wasn't "mechanically void".

I could definitely add something like a "telekinesisReach" variable which allows you to use the "pull lever" command from farther away.

I've got a clear image of what I want. I want something where the powers you get through combat and leveling is also used through general gameplay. Turning a weapon into a tool. The fire power might be useful against the ice monstrosity, but it's also extremely handy in a darkened temple.

It does give me the problem of having to 'gate' things so that the player can't powerlevel, gain Teleportation Omega or whatever, and just warp to the end of the game... But I figure being able to devote psi points to powers to strengthen them instead of gaining new powers might be a good alternative. Or gating it by giving the players levels through storyline, rather than through combat. In which case, what's the point of fighting monsters?

I'm pretty new to making games from scratch, rather than just gormlessly modding shit, so this is a bit new to me. I figure I can make things from scratch.

/agdg/ what would you guys consider a good demo? How about a bad demo? I'm doing my first game and I want to make a platformer. However I'm only starting with a demo and I wanted to get an idea from you guys what a complete demo is.

I've a thought a good portion out myself but could always use outside opinions. At bare minimum it should be playable; But what's playable? I've been thinking about story and environment a lot trying to consider what should be in the demo and partly, the game in general. Like do I include enemies or should the game be mostly platforming. If I have enemies, is there a health bar or a hit meter; Making the game like Mario or Crash where it's almost one hit kills.
>>
>>158015337
im a real girl :(
>>
>>158015103
On another note: why do so many people hate Undertale? Is it from how popular it was? I refused to play it for so long because of the hype, but once I played it I loved it.
Like I can understand not liking it as we all have our own opinions. But there's some serious hate out there for the game and anyone who likes it. I wonder why?
>>
>>158015394
Generally the first level of the game is enough to count as a demo.
>>
>>158015394
A good demo should be a 'vertical slice' of everything. A sample of pretty much everything you'll go through, only cut whole cloth out of the larger game, once you have the systems in place.
>>
>>158015425
While taste is obviously subjective I do believe a lot of the hate is from people who hate the community and never played the game.
>>

I think a demo should be a separate exclusive level that showcases all of the core concepts of the game. Probably half an hour to an hour long at most. The reason it should be exclusive is that it doesn't spoil any of the game's levels, people who play the demo then buy it don't have to repeat anything, and you can have pacing independent from the main game.

I guess a little of both. I want something to be able to show people but I always felt that best way to show a game is let someone play it. But I guess it would be more prototype. >The game idea isn't completely finished.
that's mean it's a prototype.
you don't even have a game yet.

so, you wanted to make a platformer.
then do these simple things.
>environment
draw a small area, don't need to be anything huge.
Just the things that would be in your game.
slope? platforms? moving platforms? a jump spring?
How many layers will your backgrounds be? movable backgrounds?
is there environment objects? flowers? grasses? trees?
how will the grounds look like?
>characters
draw the sprites, moving animations, attack animations, jumping animations?
what can the characters do? change weapons? etc?
>create a dummy that will react to your attacks.
particle effects? number jumping out from enemy? etc.

this should pretty much cover platformers.

I usually add some quads or something to each object and put them on a separate layer, then make a camera that only renders that layer. But I'm not sure if this is the best way to handle it.

Exactly that, with a simple background texture. The alternative would be writing an object that displays set elements based on the X and Y position of the objects in world space, which seems like an unnecessary amount of work.

New to 3d modelling.

Can I take individual model files and combine them?

For example, Can I take two separate leg files(one being a copy of another) and make them into one leg file(with both legs being in the file)?

From there, can I also attach those legs to a separate torso file, so that when combined I have a full body?

I want to make a giant robot game.

not every game should be framerate independant, particularly danmaku games where compounding innacuracy due to frame drops could fuck up bullet patterns and even create impossible ones depending on framerate

You get a certain number of bombs per level, and you simply click on the screen to use up a bomb. The force of the bomb propels the player and can be used to break apart obstacles in your path. The less bombs you use to get to the end, the better your score.

Here's the code. I've looked through the debugger and seen that when I press right at line 33, hsp becomes 0.25 and that triggers a collision with the wall on the left.

I'm not sure why this happens, I think it's got something to do with the function itself, place_meeting. It doesn't trigger when the character is sliding down the wall and hsp = 0, so I don't know why positive hsp would trigger it
>>

It's really a weird situation for loli in canada.
Basically canada uses the canonical age of characters or implied age if no age is otherwise stated.

For example, Bible Black, the prolific hentai is out right banned in canada, because it takes place in a high school, and high schoolers are generally minors. How ever, Etna from Disgaea is OK to do what ever you want, because she's like 500 years old.

But I don't want my game banned in canada.

that is the attempt but since its basically impossible you still want to set a maximum frame time to cap the delta time to so the simulation slows down instead of going insane at extremely low framerates

high framerates can also be a problem especially if you abuse the shitters lerp a lot but otherwise it can also be a problem due to lower bounds of precision so its good to have a default maximum fps but usually let users adjust this in case they are an autist who needs 240hz to breath

Well technically you could also take the character model make it single colored flat black, make it 50% transparent, make it flat and make it point away from the light source and scale it acordingly to the distance the main character is to the light source.

I know some games that fake shadows like this, also some ps1 games that use transparent geometry to fake static shadows. not sure about animated meshes though.

Sorry for the late answer, I passed out on my bed too.
Yeah, two separate objects is the best way to go if you want to avoid lots of bugs. The stairs are the most tricky part of making a Castlevania clone, no doubt about it.

Is probably the worst approach ever to it, but it was something I made around 6 years ago when I started learning GML.
Platforms change from being solid or not to allow player to properly go through them when climbing the stairs. Color changes are based on that and if the player is on the stairs or not. Not really intuitive now that I think about it, but probably was to me back then when making this. I should probably add another color to make it more clear.

Made a new gif showing him going up and down both stairs so you can see how the color changes follow him.

reposting because previous gif was huge.

> Platforms change from being solid or not[...]
Ah, I understand. If you're using a whole separate object in place of the player (the dummy object), you probably don't need to worry about solid objects- just make it so that the dummy player isn't affected by collisions.

>>158035753
I don't think there's a way to do it exactly like that. If the sprites are static/don't move, I'd suggest checking the coordinates of the bounding box or something. If the sprites move, I'd really recommend using separate objects independent of each other and check for mouse collisions manually.

if new thread i'll just repost this
