Don't be afraid to step forward just a little to get your cone on the entire wave, the heal is bigger than most poke you'll receive. Just be wary of multiple people in the lane, missing lanes, or CC cooldowns. Not having an escape hurts him, even though he is very safe in 1v1 scenarios.
To maximize his damage, you want to leave the tag on the target for longer before smacking them with the cone. When the tag is removed, it reduces the tags damage by 60%. At base stats without attack speed items, Zhong has enough time for 3 basic attack before the tag runs out, and with your 3s passive that's very respectable damage, on top of the slow the target is stuck with.
Instinctively, you way want to try to keep as many people inside your ult radius as possible. While technically this is more damage, it increases their chances of getting away. It's best to follow one target and make sure you kill them, either the other enemies stay out of your ult and let you kill that target, or they try to help and take the ult damage anyways.
Be aware of your passive at all times. This is hugely important. Be aware of how tanky it makes you, and how much more vulnerable you are after you ult or die. This is the #1 mistake I see Zhongs make, they think they're tanker than they are because they got accustomed to the protections before they ulted.
When you ult, your passive is doubled, don't be afraid to use that defensively to counter another ult. Only bother with this if you have a decent number of stacks, though.

Situational. With the i crease in power all soon you could put it in that 5th slot, but chances are there's already some amount of winged blade/sprint counter building on the other team to counter the slow on your tag, getting Iso on top of that is wasting a slot. Not to mention movement abilities can easily outstrip the distance of your ult.
However, if you notice nobody has built any anti-slow items, and their escapes are limited, then getting Iso is okay. If anyone builds anti-slow after you build Iso, it means they didn't want to build it but we're forced to because of that item. How the fuck do I play Vulcan? When I play against him he fucks my shit up but when I play as him I feel like my abilities do barely any damage. Also what ability should I focus on maxing first?

While the other anon is right about most things, maxing turret and backfire first, bomb last, and point into ult whenever possible, I disagree with urchin.

Coming from another diamond Vulcan I can tell you hes a similar god to KKK and Anubis, in terms of what to do when you get ganked. Unless you can get a good meatball off and backfire your happy ass out of a situation your best bet is to just attempt to kill the person on you. For melee gods this is very self explanatory, they have to be on your ass to hit you, a good meatball is usually capable of at least giving you a couple seconds for some extra damage, or waiting out the CD on backfire to attempt to escape should you have low health. Ranged gods are easy, meatball into backfire, into turret.

Your best bet on Vulcan is almost always a straight power build, get those 1800+ hits on squishies with his ult. Now if Im against say something like a Loki and hes proven hes smart enough to focus me, Ill pick up something like Breastplate, gives you enough protections to be able to survive his 4/3 combo, which will allow you to launch into the countermeasures I mentioned earlier.

As the previous anon stated, alot of times, especially early game, you can use your turret to peel and zone an enemy god. Maxing it first gives it a decent amount of health, and most people will obviously try to kill it in lane, which will allow you to at least get a backfire and/or meatball off on them to poke.

Of course my play style may just be different than the other anons. I prefer to sit a bit in the backline with Vulcan, once you're level 20 and have soul reaver his poke damage is ridiculous.

The urchin fully stacked has saved my ass so many times, and let me save people, and fight where I'd otherwise have to run. I ks as much as anyone on reflex, but it's made a visible difference. And I can trade out shard for spear and with pen boots and chronos, I have no issue with damage.

I always initiate vgs vvgh because most people won't bother until someone else does it first. It's probably placebo but a lot of the time when my teams actively using it and vvgn's kills and good plays. We play better and the game goes smoother.

If you like both mages and warriors then you could give guardians a shot. They have a warrior's tankiness but are magic based and often have good crowd control abilities. Often though, they don't excel at putting out damage. They're there to initiate, lock-down enemies, and set up kills for the team.

I would say that Ymir and Geb are probably the most beginner friendly

I tried Ymir before. I won the games I used him in, but I felt really bored because all I did was just ult in fights, breathe on people to CC them and wall off people as they are running away. Wasn't really exciting, I enjoyed the kits that I saw on warriors, so I started using them. Personally, my favorite guardian is Khepri. Snatching kills away from the enemy is a lot of fun, and his pull is fantastic.

I enjoy Amaterasu immensely. She's got speed, damage mitigation, self-healing, crowd control; a bit of everything.
Osiris might also be up your alley. Like Amaterasu, he favors tanky builds with a bit of attack speed added in.

Go on twitch and watch the most popular streamers for smite, most of the time they will be pros. Someone else might be able to help more, I haven't watched smite streams in awhile so I don't know or remember of many of them that may still stream. Most of the time they will list in their stream title what they play so loom for your roles. Through the streams you'll learn the meta, builds, all sorts of shit. Only issue is the pros only play ranked conquest so, clash, arena, and joust meta you may just have to start picking up from the other people on your team, though usually your team has 0 idea what they're doing until around level 20+.

You should, her kit is the easiest to make noticeable visual change because of her clay soldiers and fog, plus she has projectile with her 3 and ult. Compare that to a god like Fenrir, after you create the skin you can't do a lot more because his kit is two jumps a steroid and him becoming bigger.
Same for her gems, they are visible, she throws them to attack,and can have a lot of shape, unlike most other god weapons. You can't give Chaac a sword for example,you don't have the same problem with Nu Wa.

It's easy to be creative with her but her skin also need more work because there is more thing you need to modify than for other gods, that's probably why they are nearly all exclusive.

This is Fenrir Halloween skin, it's basically Fenrir with some clothes and you don't have a lot of other thing to change in his kit to make it visually outsanding.

Now imagine a Nu Wa Halloween skin, you will be able to give her a typical Halloween costume , but you can also change her gems into pumpkin, turn her clay soldiers into people disguised for Halloween, change her 3 and ult projectile in candy or pumpkin, and her fog can be reskined to have a pumkin symbol or anything related to Halloween, like maybe a street to have a Trick or treat theme with her clay soldier.

They probably need a bit more work, but the result will always be more visual than any other gods skin and can easily be adapted to a lot of theme.
