Who should I main in SFV? I am pretty much stuck in high ultra-bronze. I have pretty much played like every character and gotten them to silver before picking a different character and dropping back down to bronze, then getting back to silver.

Almost everyone who is used to a pad and switches to a stick thinks that they need an octogate.
You really don't, the only conceivable advantage is that you do accidental jumps less frequently, but on stick it's a way less of an issue than on pad.

Looking for some advice here, /fgg/.

I've been playing a lot of Street Fighter V. Coming up on 250 hours in it. It's fun, right, but I feel like I've hit a wall. I'm just not having fun anymore. I can't stand how balls-to-the-wall aggressive the game is. Even traditionally hyper-defensive characters like Guile have been retooled to be way more rushdown oriented. Everybody has multiple meaty setups that are literally just guessing games to the point where I feel like the game is fundamentally "don't get knocked down or you lose". And god forbid you try to play a character without and invincible reversal.

Ideally I want a fighting game where footsies and the neutral game are the focus. Where wakeup options are good enough that being knocked down isn't a death sentence. Anime fighters obviously aren't the answer here, but what else is there?

Beowulf can be a good solo too. But it helps to know his extended combo strings and really get good at confirming from armor moves.
If you can nail all that, his Solo damage is really good and he can do some scary pressure by himself.

There are actually some good solo Beo players that usually play on Ronaldokun's tournaments on Friday nights, if you wanna see one in action.

Keep in mind that anime games usually give you defensive options to deal with the pressure and get you back into the neutral.
You need to lose the neutral at least 2 times in GG per round until you're dead even if you guess all the mixups wrong.

Solos are bottom tier, but that's not saying a whole lot in SG, they're still not totally unviable. Check out Outlaw Spike, he's a damn scary solo Val, and Val is generally considered the worst solo (maybe second worst after Robo).

As far as the best solo, hands down Bella since she has flexible tools even without assists, and really takes advantage of solo damage output. Look up Zidiane for arguably the best Solobella, though lately he's been playing duo Bella/Fukua more.

Oh, and solo Band is a hilarious meme. Whoever gets hit first is probably going to die.

Kunai is a potentially nice mechanic but it's heavily hindered by relada and lack of opportunities to reload because hard kd's are rare and the few that you do get you don't want to give up that moment for a kunai or you put yourself in a 1 steps forward 3 steps back.

Her kunai are a pseudo-limited resource but none of the benefits associated with limited resources. Johnny's coins have a huge benefit to them even if having only 8 and a decent super to replenish 2. Arbiter can't replenish his carbine bullets but considering the ways he can use them you should be glad, his grenades replenish on a 15 second but he still makes good work of it's limited use. If Ibuki burns her kunai if the opponent KNOWs Ibuki he will fuck up her freshman ass.

I would like to see that Chun from the very first public build of the game back.

Remove her dumb IAL and give that fun air spinning kick, lighting kicks enders and replace her jab link combos (she's one of the few characters that can link a medium from a jab in V without needing counter-hit status for it) with those fancy target combos. You may keep her V-Trigger as it is right now, maybe make it three-bar instead of two-bar.

He's been in the high level FGC for a very long time and has probably been a top player for many of the games he played.

JWong and ChrisG, both prominent Mahvel players played it competitively at top level.

SG does not deserve all the shafting it gets. It literally has a bunch of things the FGC wants for all games like good netcode (GGPO), frame data in training mode, and gameplay balanced by someone that actually plays games.

Putting SG down for minor things without mentioning the great stuff it has makes other game developers look like the FGC does not care for good things.

but that's why Skullgirls has apparently found most of its core audience through new blood from outside the conservative FGC,
and why their scene has still seemed to grow despite a lot of its 2012/2013 players moving on.
however these are also people who are probably just now growing the nerves to travel and compete as well.

whether or not the numbers continue to grow is one thing, but the commitment by them is definitely there.

There is something about this sudden love for SFIII:3S that I'll never get.

The game sold really bad. It wasn't until Evo Moment #37 the game got some coverage and interest. Everyone was hating it basing their experiences over SF3: NG, which was outright broken and boring.

What I don't get the most is the love of most of the new characters in 3S. What made SF2 characters so iconic in the entire genre is how simple they're and the fact you can easily guess what's gonna be their personalities and playstyles just by seeing them.
You see Zangief and you immediately think "This is a wrestler!", it doesn't go far away from the idea of a grappler in a fighting game. You see Blanka and you can see the stereotype of the gorilla character with wacky shenanigans. You see Vega and you can easily guess its narcissistic personality and his nimble playstyle and good air control.

Aside from few characters that may actually fit in this conception (Makoto, Dudley, Ibuki, arguably Alex), most of the designs in SFIII are so bland and weird it makes them unrecognizable. See for example Remy: visually there is nothing that makes you think how he's going to play. He doesn't even look like a typical SF character, more like a KoF one. And then there is everyone's sudden favourite, Q. He's a misterious guy under a robot mask. A generic design with no affiliation with his playstyle, which is even more bland than his look (rush punches? There is already Balrog that does those kind of moves). As for Remy, there is no hint at his playstyle in his design.

I don't even want to talk about the gameplay. Aside from the balancing, in terms of mechanics it's so all over the place. Building meter with whiffing normals, parries that deconstruct the idea of footsies and solid fundamentals, two types of jumps (and even more with some specific characters). It's just not Street Fighter.

Explain to me how this sudden love for this game happened.
