So I am trying out Rome 2 for the first time. I hoped it would be fun to expand on the actual combat with better use of formations and shit but I seem to be completely failing at every aspect except combat.

Combat is fine, although a bit unclear at times. But I have no idea how to build my army properly, how and who to attack. Every time I look at the enemy he seem to have like 6 units so I go in for the attack but it appears he has more all along [queue evil laugh].
The AI just holes up in his little corner of the map and starts pumping an exceptional number of units as soon as I declare war. This game isn't fun, the AI is doesn't have its own agenda it seems. I have no advantage to profit from nor a lot of opportunity to create them.

Can some experienced vet here help me out a bit?

if you're attacking a city, there are garrisoned units that aren't part of the actual army.

as far as building an army properly, start with a balance of troops. some mainline infantry, a couple of anti-cav units, a few missile units and cavalry of your own.

Tweak what you want based off that.
