It had to be Goro, or at least someone not a regular party member, just because the stuff Goro does as part of the conspiricy wouldn't work with someone like Ryuji who's with you all game.

Like Goro meets with the Shadows and gets them to do their thing, and also kills other shadows to get what Shido wants. If that was Ryuji every boss that mentinos the "black masked man" which is everyone from Madarame on would recognize him when he shows up with the thieves. It also needs to be someone with a Persona already, and almost all your party are clueless to them until they meet MC.

It could have been Haru, because she also joins after most of that, and already has a Persona when you meet her (and in fact the game does for like 2 minutes try to pretend Haru is that other Persona user you've heard about) but she was literally the only other option.

That's not about to convince me, I'm in the camp that thinks he's super dead but they decided not to show it happening to soften the blow. If P5 gets a rerelease where there's a subquest to save Goro then fine, but that would have to start early in the game and require a significant new story branch for it to feel right. If they decide to just magically resurrect Goro for a sequel though, that would require a huge deus ex machina to explain how he could have survived being shot twice and left for dead in Shido's palace. Goro's return isn't something just waiting to happen, it would be quite contrived.

An amnesiac Goro travels the world (as was originally intended of P5) or at least greater Japan searching for his identity and guided by the mysterious Sophia, brand new party members, with the only returning member being Joker with even more character. Turns out Yaldabaoth was just a patzy and the real mastermind is The Pleroma, who wants to integrate itself with the human collective unconcious. Since P5s theme was gaining freedom, P5-2s theme will be about what to do with it once you have it.

In terms of being an actual dectective? I dunno. Adachi wasn't a particularly compenent cop but Goro's Dectective cases were pretty much all fabricated by him.

In terms of being a dick and being evil, Adachi was by far worse, even though Goro actually killed more people than him. Goro had a twisted sense of justice, but he had a reasonable goal and his endgame would have just ruined Shido's career and shook up the political system. He also mostly killed dicks themselves, barring the train crash.

Adachi meanwhile killed two completely innocent women just because lust and butthurt, and actively wanted the entire world to go up just because he was bored with his life.

They were gonna do that anyway. They weren't particularly happy with him, but they sort of saw where he was coming from, and were willing to work with him again to take down Shido. Other Goro just showed up to ruin that.

My original post said that I feel Goro is a figure of tragedy. He caused a lot of his own misery, but if he hadn't done what he did no one would have cared about him at all and he would have meant nothing. The fact that Goro was just trying to matter in the world conveyed a empty, despair kind of feeling that fits with the reversed Fool arcana pretty well. That said, I feel that having fake Goro kill him in a way that you don't see (but you do hear) further enforces those themes. Despite everything he strove for, Goro is done in by "himself" in the end and then he disappears like he was never there at all. In any other context I'd find it suspicious, but in this case Goro's death was thematically sound and doesn't beg his return.

I don't see why everyone's mad at the ending. It's literally the same thing as 3 and 4, minus the death part for 3. Big bad evil God reveals themself. Protag powers up with S Links, get super Persona, wins.

Like if they had timeskipped from Dec to March, and then had the final dungeon and boss, it would have been just like Persona 4.

Phantom doesn't die, and the rest of the team actually come with him back home to hang out for a few days instead of him leaving alone but so what?

The only real difference is they have the final dungeon right after the 2nd to last one, then timeskip to Phantom leaving and the Coop wrap ups, and then the game ends.
