The obvious of course is using a cheating device as you said, max Gold and resources, that kind of thing.
The rest are in grey areas. Technically it isn't even cheating but it helps give you an advantage. This means stuff like DLC (to get better weapons, more EXP, and Gold, as well as special class items and skill scrolls), online features (to buy skills that you normally have to level up and get yourself, if even applicable). It gives you an advantage when the game is meant to be beaten without any advantages.

A lot of places sold out of Conquest really quick / didn't stock as many as Birthright to begin with where I'm from. BR kind of became the "base game" that other routes were added onto as DLC from that point, ergo the sales figure for physical copies being misleading when looking at character popularity charts.
That said, the Nohrian family were definitely more interesting than their counterparts (sans Tacomeat) in all routes.

In an ideal world they'd see a positive reception to Conquest's gameplay and work out that people want more of that, but with a better story that doesn't include appeals to nationalism and such. The C-A supports for characters were appropriately ambiguous in the original scipt for the game. Treehouse has definitely made their mark on a number of them with the localization, pushing varying degrees of implied romance earlier on than they should, and re-writing some to remove romance entirely. It's pretty dumb.

Unfortunately Niles can only really be a mage killer if he has Point Blank for one, and one of the aforementioned Yumis. Otherwise he's in some strange grey area where he can do okay against mages, but they still have the WT advantage so he's gonna get hurt a bit. Even with his good Res.
Want to know what's especially odd? The Spellbane Yumi seems similar to the Swordcatcher, Axe Splitter, and Pike-Ruin Club, but at least those weapons have the WT advantage over the weapons they beat. Yumis are technically disadvantaged against Tomes. There's also no equivalent against Bows or Shuriken either.
