I think for the most part 3 did an alright job of being a Demon's Souls 2.

I played through it a few times actually in the last week finally and got 100% cheevos. It's a good castlevania game with select elements from Souls, I could give a detailed review if you want but I'll just say the major positives were that level design overall was good, most bosses felt distinct and good save a few (Tree of Men is literal Bed of Chaos tier boring design) and every build has distinct options it feels like. Negatives are some design choices I disagree with like the Wounding/Stamina decay over time, some mechanics imported from Dark Souls not feeling very well-implemented like Balance (i.e. poise) and what feels like a very poor difficulty curve through the mid and late game which is similar to initial Souls difficulty curves.

They actually improved the estus system by tying it to the covenants and adding something called "injury". Basically, every time you lose HP, you also lose max HP until you rest in a bonfire. This means if you rely too much on sipping you get punished.

The point is they can do jolly co-op with other invaders now, and it gives Sunbros and alternative way to gain medals while still incentivizing co-op for them.

Rosaria's Fingers have nothing distinguishing to them when actually equipping the covenant, it does nothing, they are the equivalent to DaS1 Darkwraiths but there is no reason to actually be in the covenant to use the Red Eye Orb and you gain no benefits from being in the covenant that you don't already get from just talking to Rosaria.

Grapes are a good idea I agree but in implementation they turn into just a differently colored invader with a kill limit attached. That makes them good for just killing a phantom or two and getting your medal, but there's no way you'll get summoned as a grape with your white sign unless it's by someone new to the game and that'll happen only once per person, there's no benefit to that otherwise nor is there any benefit for summoned grapes to not just kill the host. Now if they added something like reds being able to summon grape signs in host worlds or allowing grapes who are summoned or invading to help with PvE to get a shackle through either killing a set amount of enemies or killing the boss that would make the covenant perfect in terms of being the ultimate wildcard.

That is not true at all and I'm not sure where you would even hear that since no one's said that since launch. Red Eye invasion ranges don't change with any covenant, the only covenants that change multiplayer ranges are Watchdogs/Faithful for blue invasions as they have a slightly expanded range iirc, Rosaria's Fingers changes nothing for Red Eye ranges.

Just drop an item (I usually use a prism stone) and use the item swapper to change it to something else (and optionally change the amount). For flasks I've always spawned in the upgrade items and to get souls I've spawned in stacks of huge consumables to pop. I've also set bosses to dead and bonfires to active (though I've only done that while offline) and no buns.
If you just want one rare thing (or a few things) on a character I can drop it for you if you like, though messing around with it yourself is more useful for future characters.

Drake Sword is shit. You don't want to level Str just to wield it, but you do want to level Str to wield bigger weapons and do more damage in general (you know, the generic quality build). As long as you're not doing the Lightning/Fire/Chaos upgrade paths, since none of them scale with your stats.

The Black Knight weapons can be nice, but they're all slow as fuck and super heavy. Their movesets are fun, but not really to the point of building for them (again, outside of leveling for quality build). They can shine in Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith because of the +20% damage against demons. You can also just use Cheat Engine to give yourself the weapons, since it isn't punished at all in DaS1.

Also silver knights drop cracked blues often, darkwraiths drop cracked reds still, invading range is slightly bigger in exchange for the limited use. Any kind of red orb use marks you for Darkmoon invasions like tongues and shackles though.

Rosaria now sells crackeds and some robes like hers. Yorshka sells cracked blues, Archdeacon fatass exchanges dregs for spicing down spells and miracles only, or exchanging reqs, favor is earned with kills of any kind while invading

They are now, yeah. Back when DaS2 was still alive it was a great place to invade though, because hosts would be running through thinking they were in a solo PvE zone and not prepared for a player invasion. Then they'd waste seeds thinking it made a difference and run to the boss door thinking they could escape.

They do flat damage (like Raw weapons), the most "efficient" way to use them is to get the bare minimum stats to wield them and then dump the rest of your stats into Vitality and Endurance. The elemental damage can be nice, but that depends on the enemy you're facing (a bunch of enemies shrug off fire damage for example, and the final boss, who you probably already know who it is anyways, is virtually immune against lightning).

As for CE, you don't have to, but if luck really fucks you over the option for drops is there. The problem with Black Knight weapons is that if you don't get lucky with the drops, you won't get a chance to use them until right before the final boss, since none of them respawn.

I personally don't think Black Knight weapons are as fun as they are in DaS3 (especially the BKGS and its space launch), but they do have pretty unique move sets.

Raw is just to deal a lot of damage with a weapon, while having the bare minimum stats to wield it.

For example, the Halberd takes 16 Str and 12 Dex to use. Two-handed, you can have 11 Str instead. If you upgrade it as normal up to +15, you can do 275 damage per swing plus whatever you get from Str and Dex scaling, more damage for more points (quality build).

However, if you take it down the Raw path and upgrade it to +5, you'll do 254 per swing, and won't do any more with extra points in Str and Dex. Pretty shitty, but this way you can deliberately leave Str and Dex low, since leveling them up won't give you more damage, and instead put those points into Vitality (die less), Endurance (get more attacks in and/or be able to roll more), or Faith/Intelligence (if you're a caster). So at the same level as another guy who went down the regular upgrade path, you'll be doing slightly less damage, but you'll also be a lot tankier and have a bigger stamina bar, and maybe even be able to fuck him up the ass with spells.

The elemental upgrade paths are about the same, but even better in lots of cases (the trade-off is requiring more materials). If you have a Lightning Halberd +5, you'll do 275 each of physical and Lightning, with no scaling. Again, pretty shitty, but if you kept your Str and Dex at the bare minimum, then you have a lot more points to dump into other areas. And again, the elemental damage can come in handy against certain enemies.


Keep in mind, DaS1 had the worst upgrade system out of the three. Crystal was worthless, Raw was decently okay but very abusable, Chaos was better than Fire in every way as long as you had 10 liquid Humanity, and Fire and Lightning didn't scale at all meaning that it was pointless to build for Str/Dex if you used them. Add to that the fact that Divine and Occult dealt Magical damage for some fucking reason, and you have yourself a half-assed system that everyone was glad to be rid of in exchange for the infusions.

No, chaos is shit because fire defense is tied to STR. It's only good in pve, overpowered as shit actually.

Crystal on the other hand deals magic damage, one of the LEAST resisted damage types naturally because magic defense is only increased by investment into the INT which is rare as fuck for vast majority of builds. Crown of dusk also allows you to get almost the same damage output from magic weapons as dark weapons can from pyro builds despite int builds being one-stat. And on top of all that int builds have some of the best special non-physical weapons in the game, namely crystal sage rapier (same ar as dark estoc) and MLGS.

Alright, so it turns out the Lothric Knight Greatsword was rotated and resized twenty different ways, so attempting to scale it up causes it to act up. This supports the idea that some of the scaled down weapons were adjusted directly from the versions larger enemies use.

There are some weapons I guess I'm going to need to leave out of the Giantmode/Tinymode stuff, because there's just not an easy way of getting them working.

I like DS3's level design.

First off, From hasn't been able to get level design right since DeS. I always preferred the hub leading to several large, self-contained areas. Furthermore, the idea that there was only one 'bonfire' between you and the boss, and the rest of the level was just shortcuts, was most refined here.

DaS1 did the metrovania thing, and it was cute and functional, but right from the get-go I thought the design was lackluster. I like exploring the games like everyone else, and I liked that the path wasn't always obvious and you could sequence-break, but the world felt mashed together and disjointed. I mean, it's supposed to feel big, but literally a 5 minute run gets me from 'forested outskirts' to 'legendary castle of the gods'.

DaS2 had the worst level design, by far. In 1, I would sequence break so that I could finish a PvP character quickly, took about 5 hours or so to finish the game (post bottomless-box). In DaS2, I found it took me around 40 hours to finish a character, specifically because you couldn't just progress from A to C. Also, it was shit.

Bloodborne did wonders for the level design of the series. It felt big, it felt like it connected in a real, believable way. I remember looking around the Vicar Amelia boss room and finding an entirely new area hidden just around the corner, but geographically it made sense (being a forest right on the edge of a large city). I happen to be a big HPL fag, so I also just generally loved the aesthetic of the whole game, but the nightmare realms were dank as fuck. The Nightmare of Mensis is some of the best level design I've seen in the series, bar none.

So I'm glad that DaS3 took a page from BB. The world feels big, the world feels connected, and it 'flows' naturally. My friends and I always play the games at launch together, and we were all exploring different areas at different times. I never understood the "lel straight line" thing, we had someone discover Irithyll at the same time that someone else started exploring the Cathedral. From my experience, the game is paced pretty equally, if not a little more obviously, as DaS1. Besides, if you knew what you were doing, in DaS1, you skipped all of the optional bosses anyway. What's so bad about a little bit of linearity if the end result is the same?

Speaking of sequence breaking, they did it right in DaS3. You can still do it if you're not a punk bitch, you can get a +9 weapon, and that sweet Firelink alt music. You can't just accidentally pick the skeleton key on your first playthrough and fuck up everything like I've seen people do.

Basically, yeah I like DaS1 and all but the level design has been shit since the first game, so get over it already.

Fromsoft likes the idea of hyperarmor being breakable, but of the player being able to influence what can and can't break it.

For example, with 30 poise there are lots of boss attacks which normally insabreak HA that now won't. It's a really edge-case sort of thing in that it's not something useful for pvp or generally what you would build your character around, but if you happen to be wearing havel's or smough's, you might notice that you can HA almost fucking anything because Yhorm literally cannot break your poise.

It's an RP stat, and the only poise treat it as anything other than an RP stat and get autistic about it is because previous games had a very imbalanced "stack this to win" stat by the same name.

It was a weird system that ended up with 2H curved sword running attacks having like 200 poisebreak and basically meant that the poise investment necessary to resist things without HA was astronomical.

But, once people figured out what the values were, poisebuilds that used specific breakpoints in combined with defender's shield could completely shut down a tonne of meta weapons via turtling.

That's why I opened with "here's what I liked about DeS level design". They took the formula, and they made the entire world connect (like they wanted to do in DaS1), but they made it happen in a meaningful way. DaS1 had a lot of cool settings, but it was "swamp area", "lava area", "lake area" "forest area", none of them felt like they existed outside of the time you spend in them.

Every area after Farron Keep feels like it's been stapled together and even then, we're talking about how many kingdoms/nations living in the areas of DaS3 while all being super close to each other? DaS2 at least had a map in Majula so you could kinda infer where each area was supposed to be even if the connections between them were shit, you could at least imagine the Old Iron King's kingdom being somewhat far away from Vendrick's kingdom. I was SL 69 the first time around, that's past 30. Of course, I had 40 dex and a fully upgraded weapon. Weapon upgrades really should be removed from the game entirely, it makes matchmaking harder and/or more difficult, and lowers the incentive to try new things as you obtain them. There's nothing difficult about building a level on top of another, then putting in an elevator or a ladder for the "LELELEL IT CONNEX" factor. It's harder to give it a use though. When you start BB, you don't think much about what Iosefka's Clinic is supposed to be, but when you come back, you're at the point of the game where you're starting to be suspicious of alien activity. So you come back to the first area you saw in the game, but now you can explore its backside and reveal its true purpose, while still making it so that you can use your game's first lamp as the bonfire for this new area. That's what makes this moment good, not the connection because, let's be honest, this is a fucking long ladder you're climbing to get up there, to the point where the interconnection almost feels forced to give the "LELELEL IT CONNEX" impression.

I'm not arguing that it's not more linear, I'm arguing that it's objectively better. Beyond sequence breaking (that is still possible), the level design in DaS1 is second worst in the series. While it was neat to play a map that felt designed in 2D, the world was small as fuck. I liked that it was 'stacked' on itself, but my dude being able to leap down the catacombs at sl1 isn't the most groundbreaking achievement in level design.

I prefer the "go around the level, get a few shortcuts, find a boss" approach from DeS, and then each logical progression into a new area felt like an actual continuation of that area. If you never played DeS, the Tower of Latria was the crowning point in the series (until all of Bloodborne). Everything that came after felt half-assed and lackluster.

Well, I'll start with what I don't like about DeS1's aesthetic. Like I (kinda) said earlier, I never felt like I had a real sense of scale in DaS1. I mean, I can run from the hub to /any/ corner of the world, from deepest caverns of lost eldritch abominations, to far-off cities of the gods, in a matter of minutes. Hell, I can do it within an hour of starting a brand new game at sl1. That's cute to do for the novelty of it, but that in of itself doesn't make good game design, in my opinion.

DeS3, you can see every inch of the map right from the beginning, and then you can see the starting point from /everywhere else/. On a purely aesthetic point of view, that shit was a big deal. It really gives you a sense of scale when you can see the Archives from the Swamp. That shit is important to me.

Design wise, I think it had enough space between "linear story progression" and "extra areas to explore". As far as I'm concerned, the only mechanical difference is that you can't just sprint through optional areas to get to the weapons/bosses you want to. And I mean, you still can.

none of the bonfires individually are put in bad spots, it's just that there isn't enough space inbetween them. Everything about DaS1's map is bland compared to DeS, and it was always boring.

Dark Souls III like the former two installments isn't nearly as good as the overrated games journalists make it out to be. The fresnel visual effect is still in this game and for anyone who hates this we find ourselves plagued by it again, like cheap instagram photo-filters.

Another key drawback is that the RPG element is lacking again, in contradiction to RPG sites that promote it. As it's still squarely in the Third Person Action genre button masher. The Japanese studio has escaped very critical condemnation for both elements and should have rightfully been charged with failing on both.

The industry should hang it's head in shame for misrepresenting the game as an RPG and overuse of cheesy 3d effects. This was no more apparent than the grotesque decision to paint models as pure blue or red in Dark Souls II, like walking blobs of color.

Too many bugs and useless stats. Poise is useless, Vitality is a dump stat, there is no reason to wear heavy armor, rolls cost very little stamina, estus chugging is instantaneous making it impossible to punish, straight swords are way better than anything else, str swords and rapiers have phantom range , Estoc Turtling is the best strat because of insta-stagger. It also relies too much on throwbacks to DS1, whole areas and many enemies are from DS1. There are also stupid gimmicky and mob bosses including one who has skeleton wheels as a mob. A disappointing game all in all.

Poise is a deactivated stat, which influences nothing (as confirmed to me by Bandai Namco technical assitance), causing you to get staggered by any enemy, even if you're wearing heavy armor, thus making heavy armor useless. This bug is even more unbearable given how every enemy is relentless in attacking you, making stunlock deaths the norm just because the enemy (be that a player or a mob) managed to connect a single hit.

Combat is also heavily influeced by Bloodborne, focusing in fast attacks and dodging and flashy movesets...while you wear armor. Yeah, you can see for yourself why this is **** DK3 combat is way faster than DK1. And that is really not what DK is about.

Late game level design is also terrible. There are whole shortcuts that are never used, because once you've unlocked them there is no enemy to defeat, just bonfires. And the bonfires themselves are placed really badly, with multiple occurences of bonfires distant just a room from each other.

Whole areas consist in just a single room filled to the brim with enemies, without shortcuts nor buildup to the boss (Profaned Capital, Consumed King's Garden and a late game level I don't feel like spoiling). And the enemy placement and variety PLUMMETS in the second half, with occurences of invisible enemies that are placed there only to corner you in a blind spot (that is so consistent with the game design THAT IT ONLY **** HAPPENS ONCE).

It has now been discovered, as I write, that phantom range in straight swords and rapiers is a thing, making them SIGNIFICANTLY longer that Ultra Great Swords and Great Swords which, given the increased speed and damage of straight swords, makes using them the only viable options for PvP and make the life everyone that does PvE with any weapon other than straight swords significantly harder.

After playing through the game with a friend of mine who is also a huge souls series fan, we both came to the same conclusion; Dissapointment. While a good game, it just falls short in several areas and brings very little new to the table.

Im a long time souls fan and have done multiple play-throughs of each title. This is by far the least polished game in the series. not only were there bugs at launch but framerate problems have persisted even after the first couple updates.

But my main gripes with this game are as follows:

the bonfire placement was more frequent; making them more like checkpoints than the much loved sanctuary in the previous games.

Many areas and bosses alike were just so heavily inspired by previous games that only a couple areas felt totally fresh. In the end, i wish From Software had really made a more compelling send off to the dark souls series.

Mechanically, probably the worst Souls game so far -

1. Combat is speeded up to the point of being silly
2. The removal of poise means that people wearing the heaviest armor can be stunlocked by low level mobs wielding broken swords

4. Magic in general is awful, particularly due to the increased closing speed of mobs - total lack of balance

Warcry gives about 50 or 60 phys AR, and stays for longer than bundle. Incredible AR and doesn't take much time to apply unlike resin which give elemental damage. You can also use warcry in an elemental infused weapon. Though I don't think pyros use warcry since they tend to focus in their so special pyros.

Longsword still an easier choice though.

This is the worst incarnation of a Souls game imaginable. It borrows bosses, and mechanics, from Demon Souls/Dark Souls 1. It doesn't improve on them, in fact it is just the opposite. A great example is the "poise" system from DS1. Poise is in this game, but only in name. It appears on armor, and even in item abilities, however it has no effect on the game. This means that any fast attacking enemy can stun lock the player to death, completely negating your armor.

Instead of just making enemies hard, they have coded in artificial forms of increasing the difficulty. FOr example some enemies are coded to have a shield and face you all of the time. If you try to kick the shield then the game lowers the shield and counter attacks. However unlike DS/DS1 in this game you become animation locked far more frequently. An easily observed example is to start running, and then try to turn another direction. In DS your character would simply move, but in DS3 you get locked into a pivot animation. There are no iframes for this, and it counts as a counter hit giving the enemy bonus damage. So if you try to kick the shield the enemy is programmed to drop their shield and counter attack while you are unable to do anything. That isn't about skill, that is the complete opposite of what DS stands for. That is taking the ability to make the play from the player, and instead asking them if they can cheese the system like a speed runner. This can be observed when fighting knights past the dragon barracks also. They have a lock on feature that will lock on and hit you through walls, or invisibility. Despite having never actually observed the player they are capable of buffing then executing an attack on an invisible silenced enemy.

I could go on, but this game isn't that worth it. It gets good ratings from people that never played the first ones. This is just a pale, pathetic, imitation of far better games.

I've made some changes to this based on feedback I got since I posted it yesterday.

Still not 100% sure on the balance of the numbers regarding weapons, and I tried to make the optional challenge stuff as interesting as I could think of. Probably some typos and goofs here and there I've missed, feel free to test it out.

also I did some testing and at least for one-handed R1s, handaxe isn't any faster than your average straight sword but it does use less stamina (about as much as shortsword), so it might be good for a pyro who lacks stamina.

Played DS1, DS2, and now onto DS3. Hell, I even was an avid "Demon Souls" fan to back in the day. Sadly, this series has died with DS3. I once highly respected the Dark Souls franchise but after 100+ hours of Dark Souls 3, no longer. Not out of frustration, but out of disappointment.

Simply put DS3 is far too linear for me to enjoy. If you miss a specific, concealed area you will be lost and stuck for far too long. Progression isn't obvious and frustrating not because of difficulty (the game is still difficult) but more importantly the game map design is terrible.

In DS1 there was this lovely sense over the map being very inter-connected. DS2 moved away from that to make a more dull and linear layout, but DS3 takes this to a new level. It's really pathetic how little innovation, if any, went into making the game. It's a true disappointment.

For those who still love the game because yes, it is still very pretty and the mechanics are the same from DS1&2 the game layout is overwhelmingly disappointing.

Having finished my first play-through I am sincerely tempted to ask for my money back due to the lack of ingenuity behind this game design. It is pathetic.

I tend to hold games to very high standards, but it is a sincere shame to see a game like DS (once held as my benchmark for great gaming) to fall to such a level. The sheer linear design of DS3 progression is disdainful.

Anyone who was a dark souls fan should actively stay away from DS3. I never even began to talk about how poor the optimization is behind the game. It is really sad how poor the game preforms..

I feel embarrassed to see a franchise fall so far from where it once stood. Lacking innovation, making a "cash cow" product of what was once a respectable series, and insulting any DS fan with a garbage linear-design for its map leaves me to say simply I'm done.

I'm a diehard Sun Bro and have been Praisin' for years. Since Demon Souls first came out actually. But why am I disappointed with this game? While some of the visual effects have been improved, the overall graphics have not. Lords of the Fallen and Bloodborne both look better. They definitely have not pushed any boundaries there.
Next, the camera. I'm tired of fighting it. It's OP. During the first boss battle there were multiple times where the target selected icon came off the boss randomly and the camera lost its bearings. At one point while standing on a scaffolding with a enemy beneath me I started to spin fast. The enemy below me was doing a spin to win attack and here is me above him spinning in place . WTF
Lastly, the game doesn't feel new enough or different enough to me. Lots of the same weapons and shields from DS2, lots of the same Miracles from DS2. There is just too much of it that feels recycled from DS2 and Bloodborne. I told my wife about the game and how excited for it that I was and she asked yesterday "Did you get your new game?" I said "Yeah hun, I'm playing it right now". She said "Oh, it looks exactly like the other one you were playing." Pretty much

Hey guys I need to know, does Soul Memory on PC lock you out of the multiplayer too badly? I only played DS2 before SOTFS came out so I dont know wether I should get the ring or not. Also the charcter I'm making isnt dedicated for PVP but I'd like to be able to be invaded and co-op.

Basically I want to know if there is a sizeable amount of people who have ignored SM and just raised their online tier to whatever the limit is.
