I have a question that I hope some of you can answer. I haven't played with real cards since 2006. But I've been playing Yugioh simulators since 2011. I've been consistent top 200 player on DN and right now my rating is mid-1600s on YGOPro. Would my ranking online translate to being a good player in real life IF I start buying cards again? Trying to get them to work in YGOpro, it's probably best for you to either know how the system works, or to just find cards you know the function of and reverse-engineer them that way.

If you're talking about design, you generally want to look at other cards and how they interact with each other. The interaction is important. Champion's Vigilance is arguably more powerful in effect than Infernity Barrier, yet due to how Infernities can easily get a monster on the board and empty their hand compared with how hard it can be to get a Lv 7+ Normal Monster on board, obviously Infernity Barrier is the better card.

Also, please please please PLEASE don't design CaC in a vacuum. PLEASE consider other cards that exist already and how they interact with cards you design. Don't make an archetype of Reptiles that love being sent to the grave and forget that Snake Rain is a card.

I find that when designing an archetype it helps to design a Structure Deck of sorts for the archetype, then do a couple dozen opening hands of that deck, then looking at what your good turn 1/2 plays are. If you're getting 4 Synchros on board and cycling tons of Pendulums while also having easy mode Rank 3, 4, 8, and 10 access, you MIGHT have gone a bit overboard. On the other side of the spectrum, if your T1/T2 plays are commonly "set 3 and pray" or something of the like, you probably need to go back to the drawing board.

Most of the time, it's better to design a group of cards that interact with each other and outside cards better than it is to design single one-off generic cards, especially these days.
