Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Of course you right-wingers care about windmills. Millers are nothing but rentiers, charging hard-working farmers for the use of his capital(the windmill) while doing no work themselves. To support windmills is to support rent-seeking and the rich at the expense of the hard-working proletariat.

The left, on the other hand, has a cool statue head and hand. Vote Left Talis 2016.

Excuse me, but windmills increase production for all, thereby increasing the amount of food available. While the Left starves for their so-called equality, the Right is able to prosper by producing enough to both provide for its people and have excess to reinvest in improving their infrastructure, education, and other amenities. To say that technological advancement is 'capitalist' is to both insult alternative forms of wealth distribution and, moreover, besides the point. Your very arguments press the advantages of living in Right Talis.

If I have good access to death but dont have reanimators or freespawn whats a good source of chaff, especially early on?
>>
>>156835262
Wolves. You can recruit N mages all over the place and are bound to find gemsites if you have 10+ provinces.

If you are hellbound on using those precious death gem for chaff, reanimation gives you things that can actually hit enemies, dispossessed spirits give the defensively best chaff due to ethereal and pale riders gives so well hitting chaff it is no longer just chaff.

>A great fissure opens up in the recently seized land of Caelum.
>From the yawning abyss rises a magnificent fountain of polished marble.
>Curious citizens stare in awe at the wondrous sight.
>The militia established by Formorian conquerors assembles to investigate.
>The long imprisoned spirit of the fountain, and god of Caelum, begins to stir.
>Blood pours from every spout as the spirit is roused by the approaching intruders.
>Horrible unearthly wailing pierces the souls of all nearby as the spirit awakens and realizes what has become of its worshippers' homeland.
>Blood gushes forth from the fountain as the spirit fully reawakens, incinerating those foolish enough to approach its vessel and driving the rest mad with fear.
>Its rage will subside for nothing less than total destruction or the recapture of its rightful lands.
>The few remaining Caelians in hiding across the world feel the call of their vengeful god and flock to its aid.

Play a game with Magic Enhanced.

Maximum sites. Maximum research speed. Minimum resources. Minimum gold. Optional : maximum indie strength.

That's how life was pretty much back then. Normal humans were hiding away in caves since literally everything with a pulse and some things without would eat them alive if they came across. Only mages would go out, like cowboys in the wild west, well aware that they can get astral dueled or that they would have to wrestle a dragon to get to research another day.

Not all blood nations are on the same tier, though, and with those settings it's likely going to come down to who can spam better blood summons.

Banning nations with major blood (or maybe even nations with any blood) would be a lot more viable, since national gem summons are more in line with generic summons.

Lets talk about economy!

How much does fort boost taxing, and should I aim to put forts at high pop provinces, instead of places that would give high resources?

If I have 25000pop farm province
and 15000 throne province next to eachothers, where should I pop my fort down first?
>>
>>156878478
Thrones are more important usually
If you can put your forts on high pop provinces it's fine, but it's less important than just getting forts up in the first place
>>
>>156878478
IT DEPENDS

If it's early on, go for economy over safety. People aren't going to thronerush you early on, and if they go to war with you losing a throne isn't the end of the world. In that case, having better income is more important. Past the early-midgame you definitely want to put a fort on every throne though, regardless of its position or the economic benefit its province gives you.

Read the manual.

>should I aim to put forts at high pop provinces, instead of places that would give high resources? It depends on which nation you're playing, and which you need more. Lots of high resource troops that you need a lot of? Resource matters more. Playing Yomi? Resources don't matter at all.

>If I have 25000pop farm province

It depends. You probably want a fort on each of them, because 25000 is pretty good, but the throne is also good and needs a fort to protect it. If there's no realistic chance that someone else could throne-rush or otherwise threaten the throne, I'd do the farm first. Otherwise, the throne.

Well jokes aside, the whole units having age, sex, dark vision thingy, large scale spells like Utterdark, items like Bear Claw's Talisman and the trap fox thingy affecting seduction (of course not named like that, but the mechanics themselves)

Basically a dominions-like roguelite.

I might just start writing up ideas for a pre-EA modnation based on the EA ones, question is, which one? Ideally one that has a decent amount of lore regarding the past.
So far I checked Jotunheim (Rimtursar et all), Kailasa (Devatas), Lanka (the powerful Rakshasa), and Hinnom (Grigori and Nephilim). Anyone got any other ideas? I'll pick one then read the lore properly before starting anything.
>>
>>156891162
Primitive pre-slave EA rlyeh.
Its mentioned how they turned everyone into slaves, so there was a time they didnt have any slaves.

Could add an Ermor (the Old Religion). A Nemedian empire that pre-dated Fomoria/Tir na Nog is also an option. Pre-flooded Therados as well.

>>156891385

These two as well, but maybe a UW nation isn't the best starting point.
>>
>>156891950
I have, but it uses so many archaic words I need a dictionary to really understand what it's saying. And don't even get me started on the poetry itself.
>>
>>156892281
No I mean the historiography part of it. It's patchwork of things even single stanzas were modified/written by two people in different ages.
>>
>>156891162
It would be cool to see the Pale Ones before they were sacrificed. I'm not sure how they'd be mechanically different though, aside from lack of death magic.

Actually, maybe make them not fat, but instead ubermenschen body-type, and with decent attack/defense skills, but still totally naked all the time. Would take a lot of spritework.
>>
>>156891385
>>156891943
R'lyeh and Therodos were also on my list, but like >>156892262 said maybe starting with a UW one isn't the best idea.

>>156891950
I'd do what Illwinter did and piece shit together, change the names up a bit, et voilà. No real other way to do it either. Of course in my case, I'd check first Dominions lore, then if there is a hole try to find something in real mythology.

>>156892230
These two are also pretty solid, though as someone who doesn't play EA Ermor, Fomoria, or TirNaNog much at all I'd rather start with a nation I've played a lot.

All in all I'm really leaning towards Hinnom or Jotunheim since I play those a lot, but I'll give it some thought.

Enjoying CK2 is a good start, this game also has lots of mechanics that interact in interesting ways. Maybe start with a human nation that's pretty straightforward on magic (I like Middle Age Ulm) and go from there. Remember that it's a magic game with armies, faff about in single player for a while, read some guides, then get in some multiplayer. The computer doesn't play the game with much depth, so in my opinion multiplayer is more fun.

Magic is way more important and overall better than those games. City building and economy are pretty stripped down, it's fundamentally a war simulator. Unlike those games, there are tactical battles, though you don't play them out yourself, but set the tactics that your units will use and (until you git gud) inevitably fuck up. There's no tech, only magical research, but that still matters a ton because magic is like two thirds of the economy in practice.

Also unlike those games, it's mostly multiplayer. The singleplayer AI is shit (like Paradox games) but unlike those, the game really shines competitively in multiplayer and that's how pretty much everyone normally plays. I, personally, never play multiplayer in anything, except for Dominions. Ah, the multiplayer is also very friendly to people who have trouble with social situations. You take a turn per day (usually, sometimes games are faster or slower) and a game lasts about three months. Diplomacy is often done through in-game messages, which are sent one turn and arrive the next, so you can do it without having to talk to people too much.

I'll provide further answers to further questions, but without knowing what you'd like to know more specifically, I'd just be regurgitating a lot that you'd read elsewhere.

I'm about to play a FFA game as MA Pelagia. I'm the only UW nation, but I know Ermor and C'tis are in the game. What sort of pretender god should I be aiming for? Dwarf Fortress isn't multiplayer so it's easier in that regard. The interface is such a quagmire though that I'd say it evens things out.
>>
>>156960490
People who say that have been playing DF for years and have forgotten how much time they spent struggling with DF when they first played it.

That said, once you get past the initial hurdle, DF is a surprisingly easy game. Once you learn how to set shit up properly it practically plays itself and you only have to intervene when something fucks up. It's hard to get into because of the autistic complexity and dogshit UI, but I definitely consider Dominions to have a higher skill ceiling, simply because multiplayer adds a level of challenge that goes beyond learning how not to fuck up.
>>
>>156960490
>>156960969
People who think Dwarf Fortress is harder to get into are scrubs or just have zero imagination. Dwarf Fortress is not a complex game, at all, in fact it's rather shallow once you start looking into it. World generation is extremely deep but you don't even have multi-tile gates or tunnelling besiegers.

Either you are in full Dunning-Kruger and think evospamming means you've learned Dominions, or you simply have no imagination and couldn't get your head around the ASCII. There is little difficulty in DF past the UI, once you've learned that you're mostly set.

Nobody here said that dwarf fortress had a higher skill ceiling than dominions, but the ASCII and UI hump is a bigger one to get over than anything in dominions, which feels like more of a smoother curve in terms of how hard it is to get into the game itself
>>

>t. someone who has forgotten how much time they spent struggling with DF when they first played it

I agree that dominions is way more complex than DF, but we're talking about getting into it here, not about gitting gud. With Dominions, you basically start winning SP games right after following your first tutorial for 15 minutes. In DF it takes that long just to get to grips with what's even going on, let alone actually "winning" anything.

Getting into DF takes like a day at most, you even have a wiki with everything you'd ever need. It's harder to understand the UI compared to Dominions, but that's it. It's a lot harder to understand Dominion's mechanics. I started playing Dominions and DF around the same time, by the time I was comfortably sitting in my fortress in DF, I could barely fend for myself in Dominions.

>SP
That's like saying you've mastered DF because you made a drawbridge, an interior well, and a underground farm, thereby making an invincible fortress.

Dwarf Fortress' reputation comes from being popular, which attracts braindead retards, who then go on about how insanely complex it is because they couldn't use the mouse.

If I had a decent way of countering the exhaustion from 36 mages (seriously, did you pull half or more of your researchers?) spamming that stuff, the boars die extremely fast.

If we're talking about pic related, gold didn't really factor into it. I didn't expect you to have that many boars still in backup, in which case gold wouldn't have mattered much, more important is having the time to re-build your forces. Bit like my situation the last pair of turns, no matter how much gold I had I wouldn't have been able to recruit enough shit before the siege started.

Is this a Summod thing by the way? I don't remember Marverni having this many boars this quickly otherwise.

Have you seriously been moving your mages, one mage at a time, all this time? While playing a communion nation no less?

You know that you can just group commanders together by selecting a commander, then holding down shift and selecting another one down the line to group that range of units or by holding down ctrl and selecting freely to group/ungroup any units you want. Also if you press "a" you'll group every commander in the province you have selected, pressing "a" again ungroups everything.

What does Gift of Health have to do with anything?
>>
>>156977708

Stacking boars tends to use up food really quickly and make the boars go sick. Gift of health helps keep them healthy until they are needed in boar waves.
>>
>>156977708
Gives a pretty substantial health bonus, so it makes boars even better at tarpitting enemy units and also indirectly makes any regen more effective. It also helps take care of any afflictions they may pick up along the way.

By the way still working on this, mostly thinking of how to do it properly, current issues are the Grigori and Nephilim.
Making Nephilim need Grigori to pop up (regardless of how they pop up) means you'd be stuck on Avvites until you get Grigori, which, while it would be much earlier than in other ages, can't be too soon because Grigori are very powerful even for pre-EA. A nation that is weak in earlygame (Avvites) and strong in mid-late (Grigori, Nephilim) wouldn't be bad though.

By the way, since the mod manual might be lacking, is there any unit that uses something that could be akin to fucking another? What I mean is just a ritual that takes two mages or some "x% chance to cause event if in province with unit *unit ID*". Otherwise a sort of reanimation only Grigori can use would work too, spawns a Nephilim instead of resurrecting undead.
>>
>>156979783
I mostly try to play new nations but if I have a very disappointing game (say, I get bless rushed) or if my understanding of the way I want to play the nation changes dramatically during the match (for example, playing turmoil Pangaea, even though I won, made me realize it's probably better played with neutral or order scales), I'm probably going to revisit it.
>>
>>156980384
Maybe look into Nazca with it's mummies. I believe the royal one needs a second unit also available to mummify to get the full power version.
>>
>>156980485

Also the way this is going with Grigori, Rimtursar, etc. pre-EA would be SC heaven.

In summod for MA Man if a Mother of Avalon and a Warden of Avalon are in the same province, there's a small chance they "bond" together, the warden dies as an unit and the mother gets an auto-summon warden of avalon at the start of every battle.

Forgot to reply to Dalkrin's ingame message. I don't mind you taking that UW province because Malthosia already took the one that would have joined it to my territory, I'm expanding more horizontally along the southern half of the map and it doesn't seem likely we'll come into contact.
>>
So having taken a look at event modding, I guess I will go with a low chance of a Nephilim spawning when a Grigori and a female Avvim commander are in the same province, perhaps increased by fertility scales. The nice thing is there are a limited number of Grigori so as long as I adjust the probability right there won't be hordes of Nephilim running around. The hard part will be the Grigori summon ritual level and cost, before those come online the nation will be mostly Avvim.

Nephilim themselves could possibly spawn Rephaites, but I'll see about that stuff.

Also what to call it? Hermon? Hermon is the mountain the Grigori descended upon so it's fair to say the Avvim living on/near that mountain were the first ones to make contact.
>>
>>157000739
consider making Horites a bigger part of the nation (or possibly their own nation of pre first-city Ur)
>>
>>157000849
Yeah still unsure about the Horite, according to their own lore they lived separate from the Avvim and Grigori/Nephilim/Rephaites, and retreated into caves and mountains (where they got fucked up by Pale Ones).
They would probably show up as caverec/mountainrec.
>>
>>157000849

Pre-first age horites would be their own nation.

>>157001682
>>157001692
Horites kept separate from the Avvim but I don't think there is near enough stuff for them to end up having their own nation. They would fit in as a minor for some other nation or some terrainrec.

I dunno how many nations you'll do but things like pre-EA Ur would be more of a bunch of tribes and stuff rather than a consolidated nation.
>>
>>157001692
>>157002215
I'll think about it tomorrow, maybe read up on some more lore if can find any other snippets.

>>
What's the situation in ScrubWarriors? Any early wars?
>>
>>157003081
What are some of the other easy pre-EA nations?
Machaka (more colossi, rhino and hippo in charge, no iron)
Xibalba (still have the sun, more fire, less blood, maybe thematic sacred fire summons)
Nemedia (semi elves without ponies, big A small D)
Niefelheim (Rimtaursar still around, bigger, badder, scarier than ever)
Therodos (On land, better mages, more nymphs, no popkill, easier access to telkhines without D or popkill)

So, I'm not very experienced with scripting or magic (or Dominions in general, I guess), and I set up my army to cast some spells that require gems. I thought I scripted everything right, but when the battle came around, those spells were skipped entirely.

Now, it was a battle against some flimsy PD, so that's a good thing (I scripted them just in case the enemy tried to intercept me), but it has me worried I made some mistake and the spells won't go off in the event of a real battle.

Was the AI smart enough to not waste resources when I had a massive advantage, or is this a sign I did something wrong? The spell names showed up as white on the list, at least.
>>
>>156979167

mages with the "innate spellcaster" trait behave differently in the battle replay on windows and linux, so that's something to watch out for.

>Why the literal fuck does theredos have ...
Theredos used to be a nation with some well defined synergy, where you use your gold while you can and then need to transition to a gem economy if you haven't snowballed hard enough with your sacreds. The unrest built into that a bit, where you could either balance it out with melias or else lose more gold in your lab parks. It was one of a number of interesting mechanics where you had to figure out where to put your mages to use their res bonus while mitigating the income hit or else deploy them offensively to ignore the unrest mallus.

Then they gutted the nation and I was sad.

This update has a bunch of modding improvements, mainly raising some modding limits so that more modded nations can be enabled at once. The new version has been tested with the help of nationgen and a mod creating 75 random nations works fine now. There are also the usual general improvements and bug fixes as well as some tweaks to the AI.

General
Domes and some other enchantments are no longer visible in battles
Communion single target spells didn't affect non commander slaves
Strength enchantment bonus from some spells now printed in stats
Battle log fix for protective force
Therodos Kourete didn't spawn under ally's control
Stream of Life now causes internal damage
Faster setting up start positions for games with huge number of players
Slothpower didn't work correctly
Description fixes
Event fixes
Stat fixes

AI

>>
Which is better, a spell with AoE6 and 1 effect (i.e. one large blob that hits 6 squares) or a spell with AoE1 and 6 effects (i.e. six attacks which each hit one square)?

Does it depend on enemy formations?
>>
>>157045092
There's really not much difference.

I suppose if there are few enemies or they're spread out a lot, the former is preferable since the chance that you'll miss entirely is bigger, but then you might get really lucky with the latter and have every effect hit a populated square.

If there are enough enemies and/or they're blobbed up enough, there really isn't any difference since you'll hit them all anyway.

Someone in steamchat suggested making shadowblast AoE1, 6+ effects to buff it.

>>
>>157045814
Shadowblast is fine as it is. "Someone in steamchat" needs to git gud. I won big battles with 0 losses by using skelespam + shadowblast.

As for AoE vs number of effects, each effect would have a dedicated precision calculation, so with high precision you'll have multiple bolts hitting the same square, which would make it a better single-target spell but worse battlefield clear spell. Besides, it has a paralysis secondary effect, which you want to spread as much as possible. I say making it 6 AoE1 bolts would be a nerf.
>>
>>157045964
Mate ill fight you come at me.

I don't think shadow blast is fine as it is, the fact that its pretty good is cool but its still a gem costing evo on a path with no spell boost save for spheres.
>>
>>157046156
My dude, have you ever fought a D nation against a sacred nation in the early-mid game? Most of the time rush will fucking rek u m87. That's why Ench5/Evo5 give you the tools to fight those dudes as equal, even if you have to waste 10 death gems per battle. If it's a decisive battle, it's worth every gem.
>>
>>157045681
Well, I obviously like the first better since I think a large blast is superior.

A single large AoE means your mages can target further spells more accurately rather than casting at formations with holes in them.

It also means more chance of punching a big hole in the enemy lines, which tends to quickly result in the enemy troops getting destroyed.

>>157046325

You are stupid. You were sieging my cap 8 turns ago and you expect me to be raiding ermor right now? You are either trolling or really stupid.

And I killed 30 lictors and 40 horsemen, plus more than 300 skellies chaff, so step up senpai-chan.

If I'm about to play in a game with rare event frequency (rather than common), does this make Turmoil 3 Luck 3 worse than Order 3 Misfortune 2?
>>
>>157049609
yes
>>
So, I'm scripting some mages, and I'm wondering about positioning.
I have a good amount of D2 and F2 mages, so I'm primarily scripting Skellespamming and Fireballs. Where on the field would it be best to deploy the mages?
Do I want them in the back due to range, or somewhere in the middle?
>>
>>157049982
Also, what's the best usage of a F2 mage:
>Spam Fireball
>Phoenix Power -> Flare
>>
>>157050084
phoenix power -> fireball

or, even better: phoenix power -> summon fire elemental
>>
>>157049896
Thank you. <3
>>
>tfw llama server is down again
>>
>>157050154
What makes Fireball superior to Flare? Does it hit a larger area? Is the range advantage of Flare negligible?

Wouldn't Fire Elementals be a bad idea combined with other troops, considering they have a tendency to harm things around them?

What happens to a mage if I make him cast something that costs 300 fatigue? Does he die?
>>
>>157050649
>What happens to a mage if I make him cast something that costs 300 fatigue? Does he die?
No, any spell a mage can cast can only set him to 200 fatigue at most, it never goes over. The only ones that can die from spell damage fatigue are communion slaves.
>>
>>157050649
Fireball is mostly superior because it has a lower path requirement, has less than half the fatigue cost of flare, and only has a bit less range and damage than Flare. You will get more fireballs more quickly compared to Flare.
>>
>>157050649
>What makes Fireball superior to Flare?
Lower fatigue. F2 mage boosted to F3 with Phoenix Power takes 50 fatigue (+spellcasting encumbrance) for every Flare cast, or 10 fatigue for every Fireball.

>Wouldn't Fire Elementals be a bad idea combined with other troops
They would, unless your troops are fire-resistant. You need to position your fire elemental summoners carefully.

What are some good options I have as Mictlan for dealing with a big Ilwinter cast and lots of Nief giants? W9N9B9 bless. Tried dispelling but no dice.
>>
>>157052075
Rather, that is the bless /I/ have. Enemy has typical N9E4 or whatnot.
>>
>>157052075
Ozelotls should still body nief giants, and lifelong protection puchis should still be murdering his commanders.
>>
>>157042794

There aren't any province connections between the sea province you have and the one I have, except for the land province I just took. It also doesn't even have real Bloodhenge Druids, only the regular Woodhenge ones. I don't particularly have any use for an N1 mage that requires a temple and a lab, so I don't even mind ceding that province once I've enjoyed some gold from it. I'll leave 1 PD there and you can take it in... let's say two turns, after I've expanded further west.

They will throw their javs only after their melee target is dead or routed or if they can't move. Try it. "Fire" is the correct one for if you want them to use their javs first.

Burds here, my life has been on Turmoil 3 lately. I think I'l be able to do better now. My bad.
>>
>>157049609

Rare events mean you can get away with completely tanking luck, if you want to.

I mean, when they trigger, the events are going to suck, and you'll be waiting a long time for national heroes, but the events are infrequent enough that it's not a You Gon Die in the way Misfortune 3 tends to be in a standard setting game.
