Since going simply as fast as the refractory period allows will empty the well in no time flat and clearly isn't sustainable, his rate must've been something lower than that. Its nerfed hard, but not... totally impossible. I did pure Faith and while it was difficult early, it becomes very rewarding mid-late.

Start off by running to the Dragonrider and immediately watch him kill himself. Buy Lightning Spear and then murder the priestess by pushing her off the ledge or something so you can get her hood for ~fashion~ and extra spell casts. Then run to No Man's Wharf to get Emit Force, which is surprisingly actually stronger than Lightning Spear up until a certain point.
From here it gets tough. I actually couldnt kill The Last Giant with these alone, and had to deal the last 15% of his hp by punching him to death with my chime. However, you can summon Masterless Glencour to help you get the the Old Dragonslayer and buy Heavenly Thunder off of Targay after you run off to Huntsman's Copse to get the Token of Reprisal. This is your bread and butter but Ruin Sentinels are still pretty much impossible solo because they dodge too much shit and you have to be pretty lucky to reliably hit their skinny hitbox and melt them with Heavenly Thunder.
You can kill Sinner, run back to the Copse, kill Skeleton Lords with Creighton, get the ascetic from Lost Bastille, kill NG+ Skeleton Lords for their spell casting Ring+2, and boom, youre pretty much at the casting spear soft cap.
Progression from here is mostly the same. Getting to the Pardoner dude after Magus and Congregation is highly advised though, as he sells a second Heavenly Thunder, and another Emit Force, which should be about equal in power to Lightning Spear at this point.

Thats about it until you get Great Lightning Spear, which you can then use to melt Darklurker and get the Dragon Chime. From there on out you can comfortably yell "LIGHTNING" as you have tons of Lightning Spears, Heavenly Thunders, Great Lightning Spear and become a boss melting machine. Sunlight Spear is nice but not mandatory.

I fell like I've hit a brick wall in Demon's Souls. I can't beat Flamelurker or Maneater, and I only challenged Old Hero once but I can't even get to him because I keep dying on the way. The SotFS edition for ps3 and 360 is the exact same as thr standard edition but includes the DLC.

The problem that is being discussed here is that, base DaS2 with all included DLC and free Aldia patch, is also called "Scholar of the First Sin" for PS3, 360 and DX9 for PC.

The actual re-release, that changes up the levels and loot and fixes a bunch of shit, which is only available for PS4, X-Bone and DX11 for PC, is also called "Scholar of the First Sin."

DaS3 looks worse here than it is to some degree. It's only based on the names that pop up as you enter areas, so things happen like splitting up Darkroot Garden, Darkroot Basin and Darkroot Garden into three areas, Dragon Shrine and Dragon Aerie or Lost Bastille and Sinner's Rise, all the bosses getting named areas in Bloodborne or breaking Yahar'Gul into two pieces.

Dark Souls 3 would seem a lot bigger if they bothered to segment the areas with as many names.
