So I split a nation with my ally Canae, I gave them a province as promised, then after the war they immediately rivaled me and opinion went from +100 too -200...

Did I do something wrong? Or are the AI programmed to ignore alliances?

Why would I bother being fair to AI if they do this stuff all the time..

The Vodyani AI doesn't quite seem to know how to get more pop or expand. They only recently took that system.

That C&C bubble of comfort.

Oh man, there 10 years of my life.

I guess I can see why SC2 is down in purgatory, but its not as if the game itself is bad.

Rise of Nations should be in Purgatory even though I love it.
>>
>>156727386
I loved Red Alert 3 but EA were a bunch of retards about it.

>singleplayer only expansion

Jesus Christ.
>>
>>156727630
I know nothing about rts, what's the issue with C&C?
>>
>>156727839
C&C was fantastic...

Before EA bought it out. It was down-hill from there. That 'bubble' is all the Westwood studies stuff.

The best RTS/vidya age 1996-2008. Thats my personal golden age, C&C is right in the middle of that.
>>
>>156727839
It's dead.
The franchise was acquired by EA and you know what that means. They steadily drove it further and further into the ground over the years before ditching it completely. Now they are just sitting on it, with no new titles in sight.
>>
>>156728013
i really do hate how publishers will just sit on ditched ips instead of either selling or even taking a chance with a good indie studio
>>
>>156728010
To be far to EA, Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Sun were released under them. To be truthful, they were halfway through the development cycle and got rushed through to completion.

I'm still pissed about this and Bullfrog. Fuck EA.
>>
>>156729195
Well EA buys out an idea, lets the creative team run for a bit but very slowly and deliberately add in their opinions by committee.

They 'Hollywood'-ize their games. Its fucking horrible.

>>156726237
>Can you really blame me for not wanting to go to /gsg/?
Yes.
/civ4xg/ is my home general, but if I'm playing something else other than 4x I shouldn't be posting about it here.
Especially not if that type of game already has a dedicated general.
That kind of stuff is that pulls a general into the gutter.

/gsg/ isn't the greatest place on the site, but I go there if I'm playing that kind of game, and so should you.
>>
>>156730906
We merely followed a consensus that was unanimous.

Some retard arrived later and started whining "buuuut you decided that while I was out!!!!1!" and he began linking the thread to /gsg/.

It's just the same shitposters who made /gsg/ terrible. I don't think it has anything to do with the name, it's just some people who have nothing better to do with their lives.

>>
>>156731820
It's not a change of scope since we talk about all kinds of strategy anyway. Just a change in name. It's not strictly necessary, it's just a minor improvement since the name would more accurately reflect what's in here. Since /civ4xg/ died and was only revived by Stellaris followed by a coincidentally several new strategy games coming out at once (not all of which are 4x), it's not really accurate to say that a small scope is sufficient.

>>156731912

They're not on topic and they're not what the thread is for.

I don't mind the occassional post, but you really shouldn't come here if you want to discuss RTS.
The rts threads on /v/ aren't bad, if they were super common there could be an rts general, in fact I think there might've been one in the past.
The civ threads on /v/ weren't bad during the spring either, when /civ4xg/ was napping.
If not minding them means that some people gets it in their heads that generals need to merge, then maybe they need to be banned, but I hope that's not the case because while 7kingdoms guy was posting slightly too much about it, it was nice to see the only other person who cares about seven kingdoms.

Isn't that the case for most RTS anyway?
>>
>>156733723
I'm not sure why.

I think it mostly could be solved with static units like in many other games, but changing the loadout feels nice and fitting.

I think rather than seeing it removed I'd want to see it implemented in other games.

Like selecting a loadout for your cavalry and infantry.
Units take pops, and maybe you have too many people so you arm them with shitty gear except for some cavalry.

So Norway looks stupidly strong early on islands, and very good early on continents. No one is going to build city walls as a matter of course, so any coastal city is ripe for the pickings by longships. It's looking like two longships can easily take an uncalled city in two or three turns.

The image is just meant to show off the differences in their similar mechanics and style relating to combat.

But yeah at the time AoW1 came out I don't think it would've been fair to call it a MoM clone.
I guess AoW2 might be a bit closer with being lead by a self resurrecting wizard instead of a hero that ends the game if he dies, and that you can settle cities in aow2 makes it an actual 4x.
While AoW1 is more Warlords+Homm imo.

Just not /sgg/, since it triggers /gsg/'s autism and cause them to develop a massive butthurt.
>>
>>156737992
It's not pointless. The point is to have a more accurate name. The question is not whether it has a point, but whether you consider that point to be worth the trouble of changing, such as it is.

Furthermore, "status quo" vs "change" does not imply either of those value judgements, not the one that you assert was implied nor the one you aver to be true.

I fail to the see the point of renaming the thread.
Two years ago when Endless Legend came out it was pretty popular here.
A few wanted to change the name back then as well to make it more neutral. Interest waned in EL and it stopped being talked about for a while, but every now and then someone got an itch and returned to it.
The name doesn't need to be changed for another 4x than civilization to be discussed.

The general has a fairly long history, if a new game comes up that is popular you can add it after the /civ4xg/ part, like we have now "Civilization, Stellaris, Endless Legend and 4X Games".
Remove it if it isn't talked about much, add it in again on a whim. That part is more flexible and doesn't change which place this is.
/civ4xg/ isn't though, it is the name of the place where 4x games have been discussed on /vg/ over the years.
Trying to change the name and detaching it merely makes a new different general, and leaving the old behind. You can't go back and change what the name was in 2013, that will never be the history of /sgg/, that is the history of /civ4xg/, which I would like to stay part of.

Lurker here, Strategy Games General makes the most sense despite /gsg/ shittery. I'd have just kept using the thread until they got bored and left. Maybe Other Strategy Games General as /osgg/ would make them stop wagging their dicks at us.
>>
Was /sgg/ a thing before? What games are in need of a general so bad that they need to rename /civ4xg/? /civ4xg/ certainly doesn't need to be revitalized due to inactivity what with a new Civ game coming out soon.

Also, please no bitching about either side. I'm just curious.
>>
>>156742248
we always accepted those games even as /civ4xg/

there is no need to rename to /sgg/
>>
>>156742248
It's not that it's strictly necessary, but we've been talking about all sorts of strategy games here (Cossacks is big right now) so it makes more sense to rename it and formally accept the other kinds. /cbg/ is the most mourned of the recently dead strategy generals, and broadening the name would officially allow all the city builders.

>>156742384
There's also no need to remain with the current name though. It's not a question of which choice is absolutely so necessary that other options are unthinkable, but merely of which is better.
>>
>>156742248
All strategy games used to be united in one general then total war got it's own general and somewere along the line gsg broke away as well.
>>
>tfw no /cbg/
>>
>>156742520
>There's also no need to remain with the current name though.
Yes there is. It ties the general to its history.
>>
>>156742585
No. Total War and Civ used to be in /gsg/ till Total War players couldn't take the rampant shitposting and Civ got kicked out.

/gsg/ is one of the oldest generals on /vg/ and the only strategy general to stand the test of time.
>>
Why not both? Leave /civ4xg/ as it was (Civ games, Stellaris, Endless Legend and other 4xs) and start /ssg/ for shit like age of empires dominions warcraft and all that shit no one plays anymore
>>
We should merge with one of the hip new popular generals like /bbg/ or /gowg/ and rebrand ourselves so we actually have people to talk to
>>
>>156742707
That's not a need. That's a subjective benefit. Just like making the name more accurately describe what we actually talk about. The question, then, is about which one has the greater benefit and which one has the greater flaw. Tying to the history is nice, since it means that people who haven't been here in a long time can find the thread easily. Changing the name is nice because it means that people who are looking to talk about the things that we talk about, or that are looking for an heir to the other strategy game generals, can find us more easily.
>>
>>156742850
lets merge with the haydee general
>>
>>156742802
Because then /ssg/ would die when the Cossacks hype does (almost immediate to be honest) and /civ4xg/ would die when the Civ6 hype does (probably a month after release). Over the last few years, fragmentation of generals has proven to not work well.
>>
>>156742802
/ssg/ would run into problems like when DoW 3 comes out and the Starcraft autist would be upset nobody is talking about their game and demand the 40k fags go start their new general

Multi-game generals never really work, /fog/ is a big example and its a miracle we got this to work as well as it does

IIRC dragoons would function as infantry, but with higher cost and more movement.
Cuirassers = 3 move
heavy dragon = 4 move ( basically fast costly infantry)
Uhlan = 5 move (I think I was considering a slight bonus to cav and a slight bonus to ranged units, maybe I was thinking of an attack bonus, not sure what I llast anded on, its in my excel doc somewhere)
Imperial Hussar = 6 move (weakest with a strong bonus to ranged units)

Spies are again a unit to be built, though you have a hard cap on how many you can own.

For most leaders, they're unlocked in the Renaissance era at the Diplomatic Service civic (also the civic that unlocks casus belli). From there, most of way to raise the cap are also in the civic tree- Nationalism (Industrial era), Ideology (Modern era), and Cold War (Atomic era) all increase the spy cap by 1. The technology Computers (Modern era) also increases the cap by 1.

Catherine de Medici unlocks her first spy at the Castles technology in the Medieval era. If someone's spying on you before Gunpowder is invented, it's France.

That's why the Renaissance coincided with the greatest Church excesses, stilted aristocracy and religious repression, right?

And why by the High Middle Ages Europe was characterised by the establishment of universities, technological superiority over Rome, and advances in natural philosophy spearheaded by the clergy, right?

That Christian anti-science movement is the reason people like Ockham, Bacon, Nemore and Oresme were had no Church backlash against their research and proto-scientific advances, right?

As far as Europe can be said to have had a Dark Age, it was the period between Rome and Charlemagne, when the collapse of the Roman Empire led to demographic collapse and deurbanisation across Europe, which predictably fucked record-keeping. By contrast, by the 12th century Christian Europe was back on even footing with their previous Roman records economically and demographically, and by the end of the Middle Ages had surpassed it. None of that had anything to do with the Church, which was stronger when Europe recovered than when it fell.

You've fallen for a persistent Enlightenment meme.

I get satisfaction from having rolling bonuses, basically getting to a point where you're snowballing so far ahead of the AI, but also having to work for said success without feeling like I have to follow a step-by-step guide / having to kill the first civ I meet to get a guaranteed advantage over the other AI players. That's why I play on Prince 6, so it still feels like a game with a challenge without requiring a step-by-step repeated pattern.

Also having comfy early-Marbozir in the background helps.

"Galileo later defended his views in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, which appeared to attack Pope Urban VIII and thus alienated him and the Jesuits, who had both supported Galileo up until this point. He was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy", and forced to recant. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest."

Interestingly enough Wikipedia tries to say that the Inquisition found him guilty for heliocentrism, when in reality the Inquisition just called him a fucking moron in 1615 and was later arrested in 1633 for being an inflammatory fedora-tipper and backstabber.
>>
>>156759305
From what I remember, his problem was that he was a cunt about the whole thing.

Heliocentrism was technically heretical (and opposed by Luther), but the Church wasn't actively trying to suppress it - Copernicus published his work on the model nearly a century before Galileo and died an old man untroubled by inquisitors, despite the Pope and several cardinals having heard it second-hand before the publication of his book.

It just wasn't conclusively proven, Galileo wrote about it as conclusively proven, the Catholics told him to stop getting ahead of himself, he told the Pope to go fellate a shotgun indirectly in his Dialogue, and they arrested him for being politically retarded about everything.

It's still not open and free science - the Church tolerated heliocentrism so long as it advertised itself a mathematical model rather than a physical description, in the absence of clear evidence nobody had beyond 'this model does make it all much simpler to describe' - but it wasn't the anti-thought oppression it's touted as.

I'm a typical atheist STEMfag, I literally can't muster any scrap of belief in a deity.

That doesn't change the fact that calling Christianity categorically anti-science or claiming the Dark Ages have any relevance as a history term outside of 'things went to shit for a bit and we don't have many records' is incorrect.

Also, they didn't execute him at all. He was confined to house arrest for political reasons. Heliocentric models continued being distributed without the Church bothering them beyond 'slap a "this is a model" disclaimer on the front', and once Newton's theoretical grounding of the model in the principles of gravity provided an explanation beyond the numbers looking neater opposition gradually faded.

I get that you're rabidly anti-religious, but I think 'this book is a cornerstone of our society, don't publish things that contradict it without explicit evidence behind it and then act like a cunt' isn't a particularly difficult thing to ask of someone. People had been secular political prisoners for less.

I'm sure he killed himself at the age of 77, nearly a decade after his house arrest, directly because the Church was suppressing his terrible ideas and keeping him in awful conditions. His well-documented health issues were nothing to do with it.

Heliocentrism was a political issue because, though this sounds fairly stupid in modern society, religion was important. People believed. It was part of the fabric of society in a way alien to anyone living in the West these days.

It also happened to be right around the Thirty Years War, so political machinations and religious differences were in the middle of getting half of Germany killed.

How do you feel about research that gives tentative weight to the idea plants might feel pain?

Because I've seen some, and I think de Maistre had a point.
>>
>>156763354
I think "feel" has two definitions, a scientific and a cultural one. They can feel pain, the scientific meaning, as in process information and have that information drive them to prevent the events causing pain. Pain is an alarm, lets you know X is occurring, and compels you to stop it from occurring.
However, plants or pretty much all animals can't feel the cultural definition of pain, the despair, anguish, sophisticated depression that people cultivate when they receive information that the skin on their thumb has been pierced and the muscle has been bruised. You need a lot of abstract thinking for that. Being in what we commonly call pain is a sophisticated process.

>>
>>156763482
Yeah, but if you use the cultural definition veganism doesn't make sense because a lot of the stuff it forbids doesn't seem developed enough for that kind of sophistication.

While we've been slowly expanding the number of animals we consider developed enough, I think vegans go well beyond what could reasonably be assumed to be sophisticated, so either they ascribe weight to scientific pain or they're overly empathetic and project feelings that aren't present. In one case you can't argue with them because they feel right for emotional reasons, in the other less so.

I just really like de Maitre's quote about the violence of nature

>>

Whether or not things that stupid are people is the subject of some debate, it's not exactly open-and-shut.

If you take the view that personhood is primarily based on intellect or the potential to have intellect, treating them as you would a severely retarded person is not treating them as a person.

On the other hand if you assume personhood is primarily relational, it's morally acceptable to murder people if nobody knows them.

Ok, played ES2 for about 3 hours, gonna play some more here's my impressions so far, having just entered the 2nd era and started encountering the other empires...
THE GOOD
>decently clean and readable UI using all the starndard icons from the earlier games
>ship design system took lots of good lessons from EL unit customizing
>interesting events and quests
>internal politics add a little minigame layer to things
THE BAD (mostly due to alpha status)
>laggy during watching battles
>AI on normal is way too passive, play hard if you want to be challenegd, and even then it seems like just a produ tion boost
>early game hazards seem pretty toothless, was able to beat up all pirates with a couple small protectors so far
>needs more cool space beasts
>events and quests will probably get stale pretty quick after a few playthroughs
<too many of the choices in said events are binary, but this might be because i havent unlocked a thrid party yet
>slight lefty SJW taint to flavor text, bearable but definitely there
>definitely alpha status, needs tons of fleshing out
>only 4 species so far

Bad:

>>
>>156769334
The combat is also somehow even more barebones than it was in ES1. At least there outcomes could sway in either direction depending on what cards were played, here you just throw two forces at each other and hope for the best. The increased ship customization helps alleviate this SLIGHTLY, but it's still very disappointing. I really hope they improve the system before the final release.
>>
>>156769334
The Hissho were reduced to a minor faction, hopefully a mod or DLC will restore them back to their former glory.
>>
>>156769518
This is the system they're going for anon. The entire point is that they don't want battles to be influenced by micromanagement, and the card system was silly. It's basically a visual autoresolve system so you can watch them if you want, but if you don't there's no autoresolve cheese that happens.

>>
>>156770756
They said that there would be "multiplayer scenarios" with starting era, ending era, and some custom victory condition within that period, to allow for shorter games.
Should be available for singleplayer, or be easy to mod into it.

Should I make an exception for ES2?

Just wait it out if you want, assuming they support it post-launch like they're doing with Legend, ES2 will be incredible a year from now.

Rome is literally king of the entire game though, their free shit makes them good at everything
Remember you get literally double culture compared to everyone else at the start of the game with at LEAST a 15 turn margin even if they start by building a monument.
>>
>>156772619
Dont blame Jewhan , he had little to nothign to do with Stellaris. Blame Wiz.
>>
>>156771243
Its too empty. Needs more stuff, instead of being DLC bait.
>>
>>156772802
nah, not really, if you're lucky and meet a cultural CS first right from the start then you are essentialy Rome.

It's one of top bonuses, but I think free monument isn't that crazy.

It means getting to +1 production or Pantheon a couple of turns earlier.
>>
>>156772947
But if you meet a cultural CS as Rome...
>>
>>156773078

>>
>>156773078

>>156773209
I think that Scythia bonuses are ridiculous. At the end of the day the best civ is the one which will be able to swallow the other one. Scythia would be strong enough with their doubled light cavalry and horse archer production. With healing 50 points (at least in the early access build) it's beyond ridiculous. And now Horsemen don't get the city attack penalty which in V was there to offset their mobility.

Horsemen mobility is even more crucial now due to movement rules changes.

No amount of monuments and free roads will save you from a horde of mounted vampires that will most likely appear before you spawn a single Legion that is only 5 power more powerful than a Horseman.
>>
>>156772816
Oh, I know.

The weapons balance is hilariously broken, but since it's one of the easiest thing to fix with mods it's not really a problem for me.

Recommended 4X games.

So I played Civ 1/2 back in the day and played the Total War series.

What would be a good 4X space game to start with? I have Stellaris... But there isn't a game after the initial exploration stage.

How do I get rid of the fucking Cravers on my planets? They're depleting them and I can't seem to find any menu option anywhere to genocide them or anything like that.I got a quest to grow 2 Cravers in 10 turns but that failed because I can't control growth either (can I?). That quest seemed like it would maybe give me the option, but is there no other way to stop them shitting up my planets?
>>
>>156773537
I believe heal on kill doesn't stop and by the time Horsemen and Horse Archers are out of the game you probably already swallowed at least 1 other civ. And heal on kill is what's over-the-top about them.

With revamped happiness there's no reason not to. It's like you got free settlers that already conveniently settled some good locations.

The point of snowballing is that you are left alone so the snowball can grow. I simply cannot see a scenario in which (for example in MP) Rome player could defend from Scythia neighbour.

When we're talking about games against AI Scythia will win Domination victory or any other victory as a matter of fact quicker than Rome simply because there's no disatvantage to taking cities that will not be able to defend.

Huns in V are weaker than Scythia in VI and they still are in top tier or even banned in MP. Their units also get obsolete a lot faster than Scythias.

Not going to watch that but 'piercing' Jupiter sounds pretty stupid. Jupiter has reached the point where stacking on more mass actually doesn't make it any bigger because its own gravity crushes it down to its current size, in fact it's actually shrinking over time from being crushed by its own weight. It's certainly not impossible, it just sounds retarded with any normal materials traveling at non-relativistic speeds.

Just remember to pay the pirates, lower the taxes (it's a bit like Total War, the more you tax, the slower the growth is), and don't foxus on warp drive. They're important, but they took a large amount of research. Researching bigger fuel tanks also increases autonomy.

Don't hesitate to start a game with 0 empires but a lot of neutral planets.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of battles being hands off. Makes shit easier in multiplayer because people don't have to wait on everyone else for battles to resolve. I just wish that there were OPTIONS involved in the pre-battle phase, besides "go slow/average/fast". Even ES1 was better in this regard, not just with the battle cards but also with its formation/targeting strategies. I feel with the system as it is it's all going to come down who can throw the most ships into a specific system, which makes all the neat ship customization they introduced moot.

ES2 is making me feel like a retard, I have no clue what is happening here.

A ship flies in and initiates combat with my Ark, gets blown up. Okay. The next turn 6 more ships fly in and immediately initiate...a ground battle with my Ark and destroy it. I call back military ships to restore it and then set them to Guard the System.

The enemy fleet comes back and lays siege to the system. The Ark can't withdraw because its under siege, fair enough. I manage to fight them back out of the system with my other fleet then set them back to Guard.

They leave the system and immediately come back next turn...and initiate a ground battle with my Ark. What the hell determines if you can initiate a ground battle in a system? Does the Ark, which clearly showed itself capable of fighting Fleet to Fleet whilst anchored, suddenly just let ground troops walk onto it? And why are those ships able to fly straight past my other Guarding fleet anyway?

Fuck is happening.

in more than one stream you can see them giving you all their gold and gold/turn for some sparkly stones or pelts

or you fight a war for the first 10 turns and suddenly they give you half their cities, luxuries and gold

this can't be right

Oh, shit, I have these two too.
I remember giving up on Dead Island because while being fun (the only game I know where I can drop kick enemies before bludgeoning them to death with a spiked mace), it was one of the worst port I ever played, with many bugs, too much blur, and a shitty optimization.

Dragon's Dogma is really fun, especially since I played it a bit after Dark Souls, but it's one of these RPGs where you feel like you're always walking, taking care of your inventory, or talking to NPCs, and never fighting, so I also ended up giving up on it.
Maaan. It's a shame, it was pretty fun.
>play strider
>can use a bow, and arrows are unlimited in Dragon's Dogma

I've played about an hour so far and I can't really form an opinion on it yet.

Still in the learning what everything does, phase. There's this quest where you have give an alien ship after exploring an alien system and you have to bring it back to your home system and put it in your hangar. Only once you get it back to your system there's no clear way to put it back in your hangar. Apparently you have to hit "disband" but that's not at all clear.

That's typical early access type stuff but it's not clear what's finished and what's not. Right now combat seems even more simplified than before, though I've only been in one battle with one explorer ship and one pirate. Ship customization doesn't seem to be as fun either. UI is much MUCH prettier.

Wish they were a little more open about what things they plan on changing/adding in the future. Just a basic road map.

>where you feel like you're always walking, taking care of your inventory, or talking to NPCs, and never fighting
Yeah thats oneof the reasons I stopped playing it too

That's why I always took ranged pawns.
Anyway, I'm not fond of Dead games. I tried, what's its name, Dying Light recently.

At first, it was fun, the items has a good synergy (throw fuel at zombie, then use a flare to light it up), but with the RPG-progression, coupled to that motherfucking scaling system means that all my items are now completely useless because zombies have 5,000 HP and fire doesn't deal enough damage to kill them.

I could understand it being vulnerable whilst anchored (though I dunno why it would previously fight whilst anchored anyway) forcing you to give up science/dust/production to use it militarily, and I can understand the forced anchoring if it comes under siege, but the slipping past a Guard fleet really was bizarre. It's like the game was allowing it to be engaged like a ship on the edge of the system but with a ground fight. Also seemed odd I only had 22 units of ground troops but I haven't looked into that much yet.

I think next I'll just start turning out ships from turn 1, since most buildings are less useful for Space Jihad and you can then go leech Essence

Fuck that scaling system, sincerely. What's the point of having it if you don't get spells like in Diablo?
In Dead Island and Dying Light, it's not used well. It's just "replace weapon by better weapon".

You could set targeting to change how your ships would attack enemy ships, and set formation to change which of your own ships the enemy would target first. You could for example have all of your ships focus fire on a single ship (the first ship in the enemy formation) or have them spread out and focus on one enemy ship each.

Honestly it wasn't quite as impressive as it sounds, it was generally a braindead choice of Spread Fire if you're using missiles, Nosebreaker if you were using kinetics, or Guillotine if you were using lasers. Still, it was more choice than we're being offered now. I know that EL-style reinforcements are planned to be added but aren't in the early access build yet, but I really hope that's not all we're going to get for combat.

Can someone PLEASE explain how to play wide in Civilization V? Stop most of your cities from growing beyond your local happiness.
I don't mean "avoid growth" checkbox, lock tiles so the city doesn't grow.

I'd start spamming cities after National College, perhaps a few before that, but it really helps your science.
Beyond that I'd avoid national wonders completely.

Getting a religion with pagodas is pretty powerful.
Even more so to get a religion with 2 buildings.
Tithe is always good, church property isn't bad and will probably yield you more gold than tithe in many circumstances. Happiness is pretty good.

That you lack production going wide is really strange.
You should get more production than if you were going tall.

As for policies, maxing out liberty is good, getting down to warrior caste is also good.
Oligarchy saves you a lot of money and can help you have a standing useful army more easily.

Late game aristocratic can help you when you start raising more cities up to 10 pop.
Remember every extra pop isn't always good as wide, you have your cutoff points where certain things come into effect.

1 point into patronage if you can secure Forbidden Palace is amazing.

Egypt is a good userfriendly civ for wide.
+2 early local happiness.
Pagoda+Burial Tomb means you can bring your cities up to 4 pop and easily manage the local happiness.
Colosseum up to 6.
Warrior Caste, 7.

Put your cities close together so they can assist eachother in defense against invaders.

>That you lack production going wide is really strange.
If you are not planning for 1-2 tile range production when wide, it's easy to run into problems. Tall usually ends up with you having enough crappy tiles with improvements to make up for it.

>As for policies, maxing out liberty is good, getting down to warrior caste is also good.
Do you really think it's worth it instead of rushing say aesthetic or exploration?

>Egypt is a good userfriendly civ for wide.
Rome is another good one for wide - 25% boost to production on all your building adds up with liberty to a nice early 30% prod boost in all your cities.

How is the new master of orion
>>
>>156792835
Yeah I'd avoid aesthetics completely.
I see it as a tall policy tree.
It relies on world wonders you won't be focusing on. You'll hopefully have a few like Oracle, Sistine and Forbidden Palace but the % bonus will be less impactful for you since you'll have many more cities that won't be affected.
the faster culture building doesn't matter much. You'll want monuments asap sure, but the other culture buildings are so bad since bnw for wide.
You can't except to fill them with great works.
The culture from happiness excess is also not something you'll be getting much out of since you'll be balancing your pops more closely to the line.

As for exploration there is happiness there so it is good, the production is also nice there. A sizeable small bonus that is really impactful for new coastal cities.

It comes in later, so I say it depends on how many coastal cities you have vs how many non coastal cities you have.
Warrior Caste also comes with +2 culture per which will help you get more policies.
Pagoda+Monument+Liberty puts you at 5 culture, a +2 there is almost a 50% bonus.
3 happiness in exploration though, I can see you taking it earlier.
I've dipped into exploration after I've gone warrior caste, but it was fairly late in the game, and I didn't have a lot of coastal cities.
Still 7 cities is another 21 local happiness spread out.

I'm not so fond of rome.
I prefer early flat bonuses.
With a workshop and a hill mine worked a small early roman city gets 1.75 extra production, and only while building buildings that exist in the production.
It gets better later on, but if I wanted a bonus later on as wide I'd be more willing to go celts for celidh hall, or persia for their happiness bank.
Celts have a good early bonus too as they have more chance of getting a religion.

I think the wide civs I prefer are Maya, Egypt and China.
Celts is probably better due to reliability.
Ethiopia shouldn't be disregarded either.

>>156794158

I think with some more though I agree that warrior code is good enough to at least dip. Perhaps I should try to avoid Aesthetics in future and see how different my games will go, I guess smart play for wide is to go for liberty>honor when inland and liberty>exploration when coastal. Might force you to rush medieval to unlock it, but I think it's mostly worth it, especially if you still have space to expand into by then.

I see you point about flat bonuses superseding percentile ones. I guess it works for me because I tend to sprawl cities gradually, resulting in a descending population with capital and first couple colonies becoming almost tall by the end game, rather than rush them all at once, but that strategy is far from perfect and a more controlled level cityscape would benefit more from flat bonuses.
>>

They got bonuses from natural resources in EL and were extra hardy in Winter, which are pretty dwarfy things

They start with crossbows instead of bows

>it's biggest issues are simply caused by it receiving less bonuses than civ 5 prince.
Which brings me to another point of apprehension, tech progression I've seen in some games is awfully fast for Prince. Tech progression should theoretically be even quicker in Deity. I'm worried they really dropped the ball with pacing tech progression what with these Eureka moments.
>>
>>156818661
I think the issue is that there is no tech cost penalty for going wide.

You are given the chance to name the 2 Civ VI expansions. What would you call them and what do they bring back to the table??

Civilization VI: Age of Light
>Enlightment Era
>15+ new units to help streamline the unit progression/era, including Religious units
>Events and Decisions
>Diplomatic Victory and World Congress
>Vassalizations and Dual Rule
>9 New Civs
>4 New Wonders

Civilization VI: Death or Taxes
>Split Medieval Era into 2
>Corporations
>Economic Victory
>More Events and more Decisions
>Crisis (Multinational Event. Like the Black Plague, Barbarian uprising, and Global Warming)
>Golden Age
>9 New Civs
>5 New Wonders
>>
>>156825109
Thought there was going to be 4?
>>
>>156825362
the digital deluxe doesn't mean just big expansions, it could have leader packs as well.
>>
>>156823405
>I also don't like how some of the religious civic quotes are really fedora tippy.
Most of the quotes are tongue in cheek. It wouldn't be right to let the religious stuff slide without a little irreverence.

I liked the bureaucracy quotes from Civ 4 or 5.
>>
>>156823405
I'm happy that they have multiple quotes for things, but too many of them are really modern, like Kilimanjaro.

Civ VI: Uprisings and Revolutions/Civil Unrest, not sure which one is cheesier
>Happiness gets a huge makeover, kinda like how culture did in BNW
>Global Happiness and City Happiness are separated
>If a city is unhappy, is starving, is underdeveloped compared to the rest, etc.. it enters state of unrest, which makes it barely useful.
>Cities in state of unrest may desert and become city-states or new civs, depending on the size idk
>Being too far apart from the capital or in a new continent affects it too
>Having belonged to another civ previously affects it aswell
>Barbarians that capture settlers or whose camps aren't destroyed in a long may become city-states or a new civ idk
>More diplomatic options between city-state and civs
>5 new wonders
>9 new civs based on colonies

So basically colonies and stuff
>>

>>
what's wrong with building tall
>>
>>156832263
The main problem is that it's fairly low-risk and it encourages extremely passive play.

It also speaks to a fundamental imbalance in the system, i.e. if you don't want to settle land then that means the land isn't valuable, to put it in simple terms. This causes all sorts of problems, like having less competition for land and less reason for war (other than to cure boredom). It removes tension from the game and devalues the map.
>>
>>156832448
what if i'm playing as venice
>>
>>156831238
It's designed in the vein of the second rather than the first. I preferred the first, which is to say it's a MoM-like game rather than a high adventure simulator in Strategy form. Not that there's anything wrong with plain 4x.
>>
>>156832550
Venice is a gimmick Civ, like picking one city challenge

Civ is a 4X, you should always benefit from expanding, as long as the terrain ain't shit and you can militarily hold it. The big limiter of how big you can get should be the lenghth of your borders
