Without any real money sinks or real loss of items a person can spend their gold on a set of gear and then hoard any gold gains from that point on without anything to spend them on other than materials. The biggest outlet of gold we have on our server are accounts that do no give out their wealth before they stop playing the game. This is a major reason why easily obtained materials like flax and pure essence go for 400-600 on the regular even when whales have exited the market, simply nobody has anything to spend all their gold they have generated other than materials so they can afford to push the basic price of low end materials higher than they might normally be if we had something like Construction in from the inception (I believe it is too late at this point for the second reason why /v/scape prices are so fucked.) This made many materials hard to purchase, kind of like on /v/scape. So Jagex added minigames that featured rewards for training skills, but they kind of fucked it all up and crashed every material in the market by making all the minigames combat-based and having nothing to do with the gathering skills at all.

Runescape had potential before EOC and summoning; dungeoneering and other shit wasn't necessarily a bad idea. Jagex just didn't seem to understand how the market and game actually played and did a bad job balancing. Also they started taking ideas from 13 year old redditors and twitch streamers.
