1st for nothing is wrong with masterwork, fuck off autists who want 120497 different types of bone
>>
New at DF
Where do i get that anon tileset or comfyset? What size is? How do i install it if i had another tileset installed previously? (Grim fortress)
>>
>>155867059
I have plans for those 120497 types of bone, thank you very much.
I'm not even kidding about having plans which involve having tons of different types of bone, though I'll probably never manage to properly execute my plans.

>installing tilesets
Copy the png or bmp file to data/art, reference the file in data/init/init.txt as windowed/fullscreen font.

Also keep mind that graphics sets are a completely different thing from tilesets.
>>
>>155867167
Here it is, and it's 16x24 I'm pretty sure: >>155635738

Save it into df/data/art, copy the filename, open up df/data/init/init.txt and look for the grim fortress tileset lines, replace them with the comfy filename.png.

Assuming you save it with that name, I always rename it as ComfySet.png myself.

The latest update did.

If you have a fort near fps death in an older compatible version, try loading it in 0.43.05. It will run much better. My fort went from 12 to 33 FPS. The catch? there's no dfhack yet for the latest version. ;_;

In the military interface there's a spot which says whether or not a dwarf has relevant skills when you've got them selected for adding to a squad. I just noticed that what counts as relevant skills is determined in part by what equipment is assigned to that squad spot. So if that spot is assigned a crossbow, marksdwarf counts as relevant, if that spot is assigned a pick, miner counts as relevant, etc. There's some oddness though, it seems a bit inconsistent about fighter skill counting or not, or maybe it's the indiv choice assignment which causes odd results.

>>155870962
Things like that really make me wish we could assign random items to random dwarves without them being in the military. Even in the military I don't think we can assign them scepters, and I'd really like to be able to have my dwarven king holding something like that.

The Toad speaks:

The main map work left to do for this release is the kobold site update. I'm going to take a break from that for a change of pace, though, and move over to artifact rumors and getting some artifact-associated critters running around. The spread of artifact location information needs to be a little more refined than what we currently have available, so there'll be some preliminary work on that. I'm going to start by getting the various wandering taverngoers to gather and spread site rumors, which should give us a good foundation for information transfer in the friendly human-dwarf-elf areas, mostly.

Since they aren't regular travelers, and we really need their civilizations to know about artifacts, the goblins and their demon masters will have to pick up information on the edge of the tavern ecosystem. For this time, that'll mean having their own agents running around, which should be cool. They might have to interface with shadier people in town (who'll have to be understood a little better by the game), or they might blend in themselves if their race wouldn't be out of place (kidnapped humans/elves/dwarves grown to adulthood might finally be useful for something specific). Doing this correctly involves quite a few systems that aren't in yet, and we'll either do or skip those systems based on what we think we can complete in a timely fashion. This is a good time to finally get some more nefarious tendrils out in the world, though, and we're planning on messing with it a bit.

Wouldn't a more optimal use of screen space be a tileset wider than it is tall, to make use of the wide screens everyone has? that way each of the corners could be equidistant from the center.

>>155875452
well it's not as though you get 80 dwarves all at once and then assign them labors. the best way to do it is ofc you've got your initial seven with starting labors, and then when a wave of migrants arrive, watch them pour into the map and push "v" on every single one that enters, check it's labor skills and then give it what you want it to have. 80 is like, five to six waves and easily manageable in chunks of 5-20.

it's true that therapist is a much better UI for labor management, but I can't see not having it being game-breaking because managing labor isn't that hard, especially with a small number like 80. You just gotta make yourself do it, anon, and you won't feel these shackles around your ankles anymore.

>>155875714
Well my computer is handling that design on 50 z levels with 230 dwarves with pretty good FPS for whatever reason, but yes it's not efficient. The idea was the staircase in the very center is a sort of spine that I've been filling with silver sarcophogi from the top down, as a sort of burial chamber for dwarves, surrounded by central staircases on all sides that can be gated off on any level. Now that I have my map all figured out and shit I am thinking of moving my fort to a different corner and making a much more deliberate and autistic design, and yeah, gonna re-adopt the 3x3.
>>
>>155875538
If you want larger than 24 pixels in any dimension on a 1920x1080 you need to go 24x36 or 24x48, the later is too extreme but the former is a nice size.

There are lots of options for smaller sets, not nearly enough for larger screens, and in adventurer mode the situation is reversed, fort mode you often want to see far more screen at once, while your actual visual range limits what you see as an adventurer, so using square sets or smaller nonsquare sets means you're looking at like: [ o ]

Instead of: [( )]

If you went with a wide/short set it would still be limited to 24 pixels across and what 16 wide? Which is even worse than square for displayed information density AND worse than 16x24 or 24x36 for maximum tilesize.

I'm posting bote until toady adds boats and we can have fishing in the game.
>>
>>155883220
>I'm posting X until toady adds X
In the context of DF that undertaking could usually be considered insane, and a few years ago I would have called you retarded, but I think the chances are pretty good that you only have to post bote for a few years. Which is practically nothing in DF-time.

The interesting part will be what other features will be touched and introduced in the course of adding boats. I for one am really looking forward to see harbor structures, especially piers - maybe we will even get some sort of mechanic to build in water, or build during ebb.

Creating an artificial bay as wave-breaking/defensive structure would be so cool.
>>
>>155883634
Boats imply: moving multitile structures, sliding walls, raising/lowering platforms, megatrap with rotating/grinding/crushing structures, and there is little reason to expect the actual multitile moving structure release to not accompany the multitile creature release as most of the same work will need to be done for either to function anyways.
>>
>>155883920
Aren't wagons technically multitile creatures
>>
>>155883973
To paraphrase toady - yes, but they're a special case. Their pathing cannot be used for other multitile creatures, the performance is nowhere near adequate.
>>
>>155883973
Yup, but as >>155884008 said, they're not a generally workable method. I had the idea of trying to alter the sizes and stacking them but it just scuttles the top ones.

Personally, I'm enthoustiastic about explorable shipwrecks, primitive diving equipment(like diving bells) and mechanics for holding your breath. There's no guarantee that any of those will be added, but in my opinion they are a crucial part of having boats.

Of course, Toady will also have to work on making oceans more interesting. You have to encounter marine fauna far more often than you currently do. When travelling by boat, you should be able to see whales and schools of dolphins and things like that, and sea monsters should be able to ram and damage your boat(bonus points if said sea monsters are multitile). There should also be hazards like storms and maelstroms.

Of course, naval battles i also a must.

Lastly, I expect there to be a set of different (raw defined) ship types, which differ between civs. The elves (and potentially also goblins) should use primitive boats, like war canoes and viking ships while humans and dwarves should have access to late medieval and early modern ships, like caravels and galleons.
>>
>>155884378
>mechanics for holding your breath.
That will be added for sure. Improved swimming (holding breath, currents, etc.) is a future goal.

Noob here. So I have an insane amount of food, like a trillion plump helmets and fish, with a huge dining hall. But dwarfs are cancelling work to hunt vermin for food? Why is this happening? Are they going to starve to death with a huge supply of excess food surrounding them? Other dwarfs seem to be using the food just fine...?

Another anon here: though i have lots of food prepared by legendary cook, dwarfs more often go for some pig brain of dog intestines or other disgusting shit ingridient instead of cooked meal. Is that ok? Does cooking have any effect at all except for raising wealth of fortress?
>>
So I've been playing for about 7 hours.

I have a fort of 118 dwarves, with metal, farming, gemcutting, fishing and slaughtering industries all functioning. I built a 3 storey keep outside my main mountain hideout, dug down to the caverns (99% flooded, nothing interesting there), and have individual bedrooms for each dwarf.

I basically feel like I have nothing left to do. I get the occaisional seige, which my multiple Hammer Lords tear through like paper, but nothing challenging is really going on any more.

Whats left to do?

Well, you didn't talk about undead sieges, conquering hell and so on, but as these only last a while before getting boring too, I'll just answer pretending you included these.

Short answer:
Nothing, you're indeed done with the game, unless you like adventure mode or fortress challenges.

Long answer:
You've seen most of the content there currently is in Fortress mode, and if that's all you're interested in, then the rest of the answer won't be satisfying either.
But DF is more than just narrow fortress mode, and you're doing yourself a disservice to not at least try it out.
Also, DF is very incomplete so the following sometimes doesn't apply as well as it should.

Anyway:
DF isn't just fortress mode, it's a fantasy world generator. Don't play a fortress - play a world. Read about its history, and find yourself a quest. Restore a dwarven kingdom to its former glory, try to build a defensive fortress on a strategically important position, kill a dragon that destroyed a legendary fortress, etc.

Don't try to do these things with a single fortress, but instead with multiple fortresses and adventurers in the same world. Train soldiers and create equipment, then go to that fortress as adventurer to get armor and soldiers. Kill a demon and build your adventurer a giant castle to retire in.

Though all of these things take a lot of time and dedication. You will have to work for your fun.

Ok guys, last thread we had some people trying to kill themselves in the fastest way possible in adventure mode.

Your goal: kill yourself in the least amount of turns. You can choose any stats for your adventurer, any starting location, and any status.

I personally gave it a go and spawned a peasant in a fortress I retired, and made a beeline for some traps I set at the entrance. I died in maybe 23 turns though, because I spawned a bit far away from the traps. not counting how long it took for me to bleed out.

I have an idea that might help Toady attract more players to the game.

The idea is simply to implement running forum gags and references to internet culture, so called "memes", into the game. This will make the DF community feel that Toady is closer to them, as well as their internet culture.

One example is by simply changing the names of certain objects and creatures, like changing "tree frog man" into "pepe" or, to reference a dearly loved meme among the DF community: changing the name of plump helmets into "helm plumps".

I'm not just suggesting that Toady changes the names of certain objects, but I also think he might gain from adding the ability for DF to connect to a dedicated server, constantly keeping the playerbase updated with the freshes new memes constantly, by automatically scanning popular meme communities such as "9gag" and "reddit". This framework also opens up for a potential future system to replace the donation system, where the players can choose to pay Toady to instantly unlock certain features in the game.

This is not all: Toady can also make a bigger effort at being "in touch" with the playerbase, for example by using more memes in his dev log updates.

So, /dfg/, what do you think? I think this might be what's best for DF in the long run. Of course, it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the new influx of players will surely compensate for any player that might leave the game. It will also generate more donations, making it easier for Toady to realise his project.

To me it sounds like you're stuck near the very beginning.

Pump the first cavern layer dry and dig past them. There are multiple layers. Under which you will find a magma sea. Get rid of your current shitty wood-burning industries and replace them with magma industry. Pump the magma near surface for convenience and for use on other projects.

Well fuck if you don't have a volcano up top you could try to cave-in a block of stone onto it and then dig through the stone?

_____ <-floor
### ][<- support
###
###
###

That's a side view of a block of stone, dug out of the roof except for a floor on a support holding up the rest, with a top view like so:

+++
+++++ <- support under here
+++

The idea being that you hook a lever up to the support and have the floor built there BEFORE ramping out the sides of the block, then use a burrow and civ alert to keep everyone away from it and have the lever in the burrow, pull it, drop the block on the cavern lake, it will wind up sitting on or punching clean through the bottom, if it does punch through it can drain the water, if it doesn't you can build down to the block and dig straight down through it.

if you're not interested in building anything neat, yeah you're done. this is a creative game above anything else.

I doubt all three of your caverns are entirely flooded, either way you can control how much water spawns in those in advanced world gen, and if you're not using advanced world gen you've barely begun to play DF. It doesn't matter if you aren't into large projects or creating aesthetic forts, though. you could always crack the circus.

Depends on what you want. Older worlds tend to have more werebeasts, vampires, necromancers, travelers, books and arts and often more armies. Newer worlds tend to have more megabeasts. This all depends on circumstances though, sometimes an older world will have had most or all of the civilized creatures killed off. Or, my bad, I can't read, supposedly it works for 40.xx. Might even work with 43.xx, though that may be stretching it. The good news is RAWs are just text so if it's missing words that were added since it was last updated you could probably fill them in manually or at least put back in the defaults.

I was actually asking for the version, but I just went and found it myself. Thanks for the advice anyway. I might try to start a travelling troupe of murderous poets just for laughs.

Honestly, my biggest gripe with current adventure mode is more that no one ever attacks you. Even approaching a heavily armed camp, declaring your intentions to kill everyone there, and lopping the head off the nearest goblin will just have people commenting on how terrible it is.

At least when I was sneaking around throwing rocks at people there was the risk of getting caught to keep me entertained.
>>
>>155958710
I played a game where I attempted to wipe out the entire population of a small region using only one adventurer. I documented it in a different /vg/ thread, used only a large copper dagger, and killed ~7,000 people before I finally ran out of places to go.

Nobody attacks you. Nobody cares. Nobody in the entire world gives a single shit. People were surprised when I was posting it, part-by-part, because all I had to do was press A-a-d-b to stab people in the head, about 7,000 times. Never attacked by any human, any dwarf, any elf, or any goblin.

Adventure mode criminals SUCK.
>>
>>155959089
>A a d b 7000 times

Yeah, this is my complaint exactly. I really like the combat changes (thank FUCK for the attack/movespeed split and the different attack styles are nice for flavor) but it's impossible to get a good fight.

Best case scenario you fail to murder someone on the first stab and instead they punch you in the head, tearing the upper spine tissue through the steel helm and you suffocate to death. It's not fun.
>>
>>155959380
No, no, people don't fight back even. I couldn't get a single dwarf or human to attack me after being attacked. Them and their entire population would either stay neutral or start to flee at a slower rate than me. Clearing towns was genuinely a matter of walking from person-to-person and listening to everyone say "It is terrible" as their friends get their throats gouged, their limbs torn off, their organs systematically destroyed, or their bones all broken by an +alder wood crutch+.
>>
>>155959089
>Nobody in the entire world gives a single shit
That's not entirely true. They DO care a lot, and witnesses will break into tears and occationally break down and crouch up on the floor.

They just won't do anything. Of course, when we have the proper justice system in adv mode, this is the way we want civilians to behave. It's not like every witness of a murder IRL instantly becomes a murder machine set on taking down the perpetrator. I mean, some of them should probably try to wrestle you to the ground or take your weapon, but that should be about it.
>>
>>155959674
Completely fair. I take back a statement-- I think there were certain military dwarves who would fight against me sometimes, occasionally just fleeing. I wouldn't mind those types sprinkled throughout towns more evenly rather than being just in certain sites.
>>
>>155959546
Not the guy you're replying to but I can usually get somebody to fight me if I don't wound them too severely on the first blow

The issue is that a free first hit will usually win you the fight in DF due to how fragile everyone is
>>
>>155959774
Yeah, it's worse with mods, though I did apply the tougher materials to gobs too, which makes them surprisingly hardy.

I've got pretty significant changes to my entities and such though, but the passive bystanders aren't something I encounter as much, but I've been on a hero kick since the bandit changes.

You can definitely interrupt a robbery, disarm a bandit, pass it to a nearby farmer and start a lynch mob.

Just needs the game to get to that point where you are mugging someone, their friend is dead, weapon laying there, one of the locals looks at the weapon, back up at you, then bends over to pick it up.

>it's impossible to get a good fight.
That's not true, but the game places a hefty burden on the player to know himself and his foes so you can even begin to start searching for evenly matched combat. It's the polar opposite of level-scaled RPGs in that regard. Dwarf Fortress does not scale to your level.

>Best case scenario you fail to murder someone on the first stab and instead they punch you in the head, tearing the upper spine tissue through the steel helm and you suffocate to death. It's not fun.
For that, I'm really tempted to say git gud. Because what you describe seems to be how a noob might experience adventurer mode combat in the latest version. You can reliably onehit enemies only if you have boring OP character (presumably started as a demigod; played once; not much experience on the pragmatic meaning of each attribute and skill) and conversely, if such a character is played skillfully, nothing will one-hit-kill you. Now that observer is much easier to level and the speed system seems to be slightly better balanced, it's easier to anticipate and defend against mortal blows than ever before.
>>
>>155959380
>but it's impossible to get a good fight.
There are two sure-fire ways to get good "classic" dungeon crawl fights.

>find a vault
Angels will always be happy to attack you, and they'll never try to escape, like most other enemies.

>find a world gen dorf fort occupied by gobbos
Those always seem to house an exceptional number of gobbo soldiers, and due to their [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:REQUIRED] token, they'll always be hostile. Just remember that the dwarves still living in the fort will hate you for killing their oppressors.

>>
>>155961893
You presume too much. I've always preferred adventure mode over fortress and played it extensively, since I started playing back in 2010(?). I just don't think it's terribly fun in its current incarnation. The combat and speed system are both better, I agree, and I enjoy the way damage works slightly better. My gripe isn't with how hard adventure mode is - quite the opposite, since the majority of people don't attack you on sight it's absurdly easy to rack up kills. Monsters work fine but I can never seem to get reliable directions to lairs. The new conversation system is sort of neat but really, really needs a decent search function. Or even to be organized in the order that events occur appearing at the top of the list when trying to spread rumors. I really liked the old "talk to peasant, get peasant quests, kill minor monsters, talk to lord, get better, lordly quest, build army, slowly depopulate the world of criminals/monsters, eventually kill everyone. It had a sense of progress and progression.

I start as a demigod to minimize grinding. I was exaggerating the point on the getting one-shot with a punch as an in-joke with myself. My last adventurer had his happen to him in a brawl. He died choking on the cold city streets in the middle of a market. It was poetic.

>boring OP character
I remember when this general considered you a scrub if you didn't wrestle a rabbit until you had maxed out every physical stat, what happened?

>nothing will one-hit kill you if played (skillfully)
I've gotten an adventurer in the current version up to legendary observer/pikeman/dodger with superhuman toughness and, while fighting 3 or 4 people at once, ate a bolt to the head and died (my pike was embedded so no bat out of air/deflection/dodge). It's more accurate to say you won't get one-hit in melee, but occasionally someone will get lucky anyway. Which is how it should be, really.

tl;dr- I'm pissy because I want new damage/wounds with old-style questing.
>>
>>155973748

Yeah the search function is basically broken. Like I should be able to type "goblin" and have goblins appear but instead it randomly lists like "Spread the rumor of Ilral Heatshined the Blazing Furnaces of Gems's presence in the Hills of Banding" and stuff no matter what I type in.

And yeah the AI is utterly fucked. Old version was more fun despite being somewhat less realistic since people incl. farm animals would all attack you. But now they just stand there or flee despite outnumbering you 100 to 1. In real life people would call guards and the even civilian men of the village would probably tackle you down and rip your weapons away.

Not really sure but in America there's this thing about "not giving a fuck" like it's considered cool/good to not care about things and think of everything ironically and from a detached point of view. Maybe you've heard the term "tryhard" used as an insult lol.

I guess people also feel vulnerable and scared to express emotions or reach out to people so everyone puts on a mask.
>>
>>155975123
Dude, just watch an American sitcom. The trademark characteristics of those are
>1. a total disregard for other peoples' feelings
>2. a division of people into certain stereotypes, where each person in a group is expected to fulfill a certain role, only use a certain jargon et cetera
>3. the constant need to laugh, both at other people and at yourself, effectively distancing you from anything that might have actual meaning
Now, I'm not saying that all interaction between Americans is like in the sitcoms, but it wouldn't surprise me if the American "humour" industry had an effect on it.

Irony is the downfall of our society.

Post-irony is worse.

No one says what they actually mean and sharing feelings is haram unless you're in a dedicated relationship. Love between friends is gay. Talking to people about your emotions will make them very uncomfortable. Getting talked to about emotions will make you very uncomfortable.

This leads to people trying to express themselves to literally anyone who might give even sort of a shit, leading to the attention-whoring tumblr girls, which reinforces the rest of us to keep our shit to ourselves.

Basically, we've become Britain.

You're asking for generalizations about a massive and diverse nation's social dynamics from the denizens of the spergiest corner of a website famous for its socially maladapted inhabitants. This is the birthplace and ancestral homeland of the neckbeard basement dweller. Do you honestly think you're going to get an answer from anyone who is even remotely qualified to speak on the subject? Hell, one of the people who replied to you even admitted he wasn't from the US.

Let me give you an answer that should have been obvious to everyone who participated in the discussion. There are over 300 million people in the US, from many backgrounds, many generations, with many points of view and many differing personalities. Hundreds of millions of individuals. They all have relationships of varying degress of intimacy with variably diverse social groups. No one here can tell you how Americans express their emotions because hundreds of millions of individuals with hundreds of millions of unique identities and personalities will result in hundreds of millions of unique biographies with hundreds of millions of different types and degrees of emotional expression. We aren't some monolithic American whose psychological profile can be summed up by a couple of throwaway sentences on an image board any more than the minds of the citizens of any other country could be.

just for u:
The racism part is a little disertation on how will opinions between individuals be related to the groups they both belong too
For example, having two normal individuals from the same civ take relationship with a member from another civ that never wears pants, as the ethics from the first two guys completely negate nudism(civ values), they'll probably notice this particular behaviour themselves.
Imagine enough people from the original civ notice this pants-lacking and comments it to the original pair, by only having met about 3 people from that civ, and through gossiping, they could asume all members from the second civ don't wear pants. This asumption could be translated to the whole first civ, (although more nudists sigthings would be needed) through extended gossiping
This would be important with diplomacy, as most plebeians have never seen their neighbour's country king, but somehow now how does he live and how he is

Here in my country there are a lot of problems, but the general opinion on being sincere and having emotions is not culturally frowned upon

America went from looking up to big men with cowboy swagger and folksy sounding "wisdom", who had a capable and essentially opinionless housewife at home, 2.7828 kids, at least half a dog, a couple cars, and a pool...

To looking "up" at reality tv "stars", normally after visiting a place like New Jersey you would expect the nation it is part of to be horrified and do their best to hide it, instead we tried to glamorize it.

We've got a generation that has decided the rights movements of the past were neat and all, but nobody has a right to hurt someone else's feelings.

Naturally this is a very touchy-feely emotional type of social... whatever the fuck it is, so rather than doing the usual "goddamn idiot kids" and dismissing their stupidity there is a weird sort of backlash where the emotional acknowledgement and safety they're demanding has taken on an air of distaste, so we ended up ditching the swagger part of the cowboy archetype in favor of keeping the "cool and collected poker face" in public, with the option to let it slip where we feel it may be appropriate.

Oh, did I mention the whole "straight guys being uncomfortable around gay guys, but 'secretly' lots of them get blowjobs and whatnot and just pretend nobody notices" thing, which leads to another layer of projected macho attitude.

You can weep if someone kills your parents and your 15+ year old dog, but only if they did it by crashing your truck into somewhere sacred like a xtian church or walmart.
>>

>but it's the rule on most of your country
It's not. You're no more qualified to come to that determination than anyone else in this thread. You're listening to the opinions of a handful of dwarf fortress players making a generalization about an entire country's population. If they honestly believe the things they've said in this thread, they are probably exemplars of the stereotype of dwarf fortress players and/or 4chan; neurotic, socially-awkward misfits projecting their weaknesses and insecurities on the world at large, blaming millions of faceless oppressors for their failure to have a meaningful emotional connection to the world around them while they sit in a dark room playing with virtual dwarves. It was inevitable.
Furthermore, if you actually believe the absurd things they've said in this thread, then I have to wonder if you aren't exemplifying the typical anti-American sentiment that seems so prevalent among 4chan's European users, only too ready for your confirmation bias to be indulged.

Full disclosure: there is a lot of tongue in my cheek while I was writing the post before this one, but I didn't make it up whole cloth. Living in Texas, the Appalachians, going coast to coast, there is a fuckton of variation in certain things, and there are things that are always present.

There is always a cluster of truckstops and gas stations even if most of the rest of a community is further from the highway. There are always rows of streets and houses of various sizes with front and back lawns, a strip of sidewalk running through it, and most likely a church within, let's call it a mile of whichever neighborhood you're in.

There's always a walmart somewhere, lurking, waiting to pounce and feed.

There are so many cars you could be mistaken for thinking the average american was in fact a mid-sized automobile.

There is always a matching set of a "run down" trailer park and a "nice new" trailer park across the highway/tracks/creek/etc.

You get the idea, there is a shit ton of stuff which doesn't resemble shit you find anywhere else in the country, but just beyond it is familiar suburbia, and a good sized population of the stereotypical males I was describing residing within.

>and none of them are wrong.
Yes, some of them are wrong. If anything, the US is excessively emotional, plagued by too much sincerity. Our country's politics have been steered by sincere emotional expression since the advent of the television took the task of selecting our nation's leaders out of our brain and shoved it firmly into our glands. Social media has become an incredible amplifier of the volume of sincere emotional expression. If you're smart, eloquent, or if you can merely scream loud enough, then your sincere emotional expression will be heard on the other side of the country. The only filters remaining on Americans' sincere emotional expression belong to the suburban white males referenced by >>155982561, and that's only because the sincere emotional expression of others has made it overwhelmingly unfashionable to express sincere negative emotions about people with a skin tone south of ecru. Frankly, I'd love to go a day without being bombarded by the sincere emotional expressions of the people around me, both familiars and strangers. The whole country could stand to have cold logic steer it for a year or four, instead of the sincere emotional expressions of the mob. It is my sincere emotional expression that anyone who can't see that the US is practically and sincerely hysterical must be a lunatic.

TL;DR: PLS RESPOND
>>
>>155984170
While I (clearly) wasn't referring exclusively to social media, I disagree. Social media puts a layer of separation between an expression and its audience. It insulates the expressor from the immediate consequence of their expression. It's the same effect that anonymity has here, albeit somewhat diminished. Face to face contact impresses etiquette, courtesy, procedure on tje actors, the trappings of society that stifle sincerity. Today, though, people can express ideas and feelings on facebook or twitter that would've been socially unacceptable 20 years ago, and that breaching of boundaries in turn echoes back into our first-person contact, erodes those filters that once kept us proper, or meek, or civil. Social media has had an enormous impact on the honesty of people in this country (and I suspect on most developed countries as well, though I can only speculate), who've made a custom of curating their identities in public. Sincerity in the US is at an all-time high, and it's transforming the public discourse.
>>
>>155984618
And what do you mean "wait"? Wait for what? I don't understand waiting in regards to temperature.
Temperature is not even a setting in standard world generation.

Are you maybe referring to the embark screen?
>>
>>155985239
Oh wait I just realized you were talking about the

>setting temperature...

text. It's not a joke. It's generating a temperature map (and drainage, and height, and so on).

What year to stop world generation at is a matter of taste. Young worlds have more beasts from what I gather, but others can probably give you a better answer.
>>
>>155985178
It's still curated though. People on social media despise people who are different from them, that have different thoughts and opinions. The words themselves may be sincere, but the entire environment is warped. Echo-chambers and circle jerks, a dip into fame, or a cultivated group of associates to appeal to for easy validation and comfort.

And nothing in Politics is sincere. Not a single god damned thing. Half of the people getting outraged do so because it's expected of them, and every appeal and emotion invoked on the media for the sake of politics is calibrated and designed for effect, not for mere expression. The collegiate activists are sincere, I think, but the people organizing them are not.

And unfortunately, rationality is a rare thing to be born with, and logic is a skill that must be learned and practiced.

Sincerity: acting in a fashion or making statements which represent your true feelings and positions.

Authenticity: how honest you are with yourself about your true feelings and motivations.

You can be authentic and insincere, and you can seem sincere but inauthentic, especially if you favor the Nietzsche view where one must be willing to come to terms with the world around them in the absence of some external moral framework, indeed defining their own if necessary.

If you honestly believe that illegal immigration and voter fraud are the most important issues facing the nation, you can sincerely state this via social media, but as these beliefs do not resemble reality they are the inauthentic results of others molding your beliefs to encourage you to behave in a certain fashion.

I don't entirely disagree, and none of that necessarily contradicts what I said. Culture is a people-machine, and we're the products it creates. Every idea and belief and personality trait we have is an attenuated or exaggerated expression of an archetype that's been woven into us throughout our development. Ironically, this extends as much to counter-culture as to normative culture. This doesn't make us any less genuinely ourselves, or our beliefs any less sincerely held, or our expressions any less honestly representational of our personalities. I take the echo-chamber of culture as being axiomatic. Manufacturing and artifice don't exclude sincerity and honesty, however. On the contrary, they're necessary for sincerity or honesty to exist in any form at all. The whole thing is recursive.
To cast the whole discussion in another light, which is almost tangentially on topic, I'll quote a question that a favorite philosopher of my youth liked to ask when discussing ontology:
"Is the thought of unicorn a real thought?"

I actually used to do this when I was new to the game.

Then I grew out of my fear of caverns, and started just setting up simple wells in said caverns, close to the staircase leading down. Apart from these really rare FB incidents, I've rarely had any problems, and it sure beats the tedious process of first digging out a reservoir, and then linking up all those levers left and right.

Lock the door, station your militia outside and wait for the transformation date next month. If they transform at said date, you unlock the door and send in your militia immediately. If they don't transform, you unlock the door and continue their medical treatment, since they've obviously avoided infection.

It's worth mentioning that werebeasts, given the time, can bash doors in, but the locked door should be able to keep them in until your militia arrives.

Square tilesets ruin the immersion and make the game feel flat.

As for the file, you'll just have to write it yourself. Just look up how the graphic raws work on the wiki and forums. The knowledge will come in handy.

Basically, you'll want to assign the civilian tile as the default tile for each race. After that, the soldier tile must be assigned to every individual soldier profession, which is a bit of a chore. After that, you just assign the ghost and skeleton tiles to be used for, well, ghosts and skellies.

more than a squad or two of marksdwarves are the only real choice if you absolutely want to have a fight against the beast but don't want to risk losing dwarves.

if you don't mind losing a few dwarves you could send only a few masterpiece-equipped steel/adamantine legendaries at the beast one at a time and hope for the best.

the wiki has lots of plans for dealing with beasts if you want cheesy ways to solve the problem... but all of them require some time and engineering to do, which is hopeless if the beast is "in your fort, killin ur dudes."

I'm not sure if you mean my fort particularly or the combination of graphical options I use. If the former, thanks. If the latter, I agree and all the credit goes to RavingManiac, Vherid and CLA.

5z below that point I've started to expand the design asymmetrically, after exactly 50z of uninterrupted symmetry in the central hall. I've also broken up the obelisk into 4-part base. The seemingly random pillars all coordinate with the facades of buildings that are planned on lower levels. I haven't really done asymmetric structures before, and my 'tism is really nagging me about the whole design, but it's been part of the plan since before I ever unpaused and I'm sticking to it.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Color_scheme#Dark_Sand
The tweaks I made were to replace LCYAN and LMAGENTA. The LMAGENTA I'm using is from Another Natural (also on the color scheme repository), but I don't remember which LCYAN I used. It was definitely from another vherid scheme, though. I believe vherid has a thread on bay12 dedicated to his color schemes as well.

No eggs, just pasture them together and they'll take care of the rest. Make sure your animal trainers are ready for the results, though. They're born as adults so you'll never be able to fully tame them. If you're going to do a large breeding program you need to be prepared for training them to be a lifelong proposition.

I haven't really been using minecarts after the original experimentation period. They aren't that useful for hauling and weaponizing them is gimmicky at best. I wonder if anyone has successfully integrated minecarts into their daily hauling routines?

Yes, yes you can.

>Currently hunting and shit is way too simplistic
Aside from butchering being instantaneous and raw meat being completely edible, hunting and shit is only as simple as hunting and shit is in real life. Find a thing made of meat (tracking, prints and spoor), get within the effective range of your weapon (sneaking), cause trauma until the thing made of meat is dead. Butcher, cook, eat. Tanning and cooking will be in adv mode eventually, and probably in a more complex form than they currently exist in fort mode. But the actual killing-things-made-of-meat part is probably as detailed as it will ever get.

> vampire guards

if you ever get a vampire and choose to wall him up, one fun and useful thing to do is to create a miniature eternal-factory:
give him enough space to produce dyed cloth and clothing, and a small tree farm with a few steel objects that can be melted down for more steel than they're worth, along with the necessary forge, smelter, wood burner, and etc.

the farms are there for clothing to keep the vampire sane in his eternal confinement, and a muddy cave floor will let him aquire infinite wood for burning into fuel, to abuse the item melting glitch to generate more free steel.

he has an eternity to produce an all-masterpiece suit of steel armor and weapons, a masterpiece midnight blue dyed masterpiece pigtail clothing, for himself and anyone outside his cell... if they're still alive.

that was 2d

the anon talking about the tentacles was the earliest 3d versions: .40d
these versions changed the underground features so they would span multiple region tiles if it was an underground river or a "line" chasm, and there were single-region types for both as well. an underground pool, and tube chasm; the tube chasm is the only feature from those versions that actually remains in use in principle, to connect cavern layers. (the current version doesn't have the "shelves" on the sides that the original had)

obviously, the demon pits still existed in the early 3D version, though in the entire 16x16 embark there was only ONE adamantine vein, directly beneath which was the pits, which were themed based on what demon the pit contained.
due to the 3D nature of it, you could actually mine into the space sideways and completely avoid hitting the adamantine, breaching into demons without warning or notice.

also, the pools of water/magma, the underground river, and the "line" style chasm have all been removed upon the introduction of the currently more complex caves.
barring any map gen errors it's impossible to get a genuine cave river or line chasm like in pre-caverns early 3D.
>>
>>156052548
for an example case of the "old" free-standing demon pits, halfway through you'll see the classic contaminant smear and insane human/elf occupants escaping:
http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1701-hfsfightoverthechasm
and check the related map, but it will be without the contaminants of "brown" filth, "yellow" filth, and "white" unknown substance.

oh, and one quaint feature:
the original "chasm" tile, present in 2D and pre-cavern 3D? it still exists, fully functional, in arena mode.
in fact if you use the proper dfhack utility, you can actually change a tile's floor type to be a "chasm" and have an unlimited drain and a 'please go away now' death-pit available to you, without breaking into the magma sea (the magma flow floor tile is basically the same as the chasm floor tile)

DFhack still isn't updated for 43.05 though so don't even bother checking, you're stuck with 43.03 for now

Some news on Toady's twitter that I had missed:
>With NPCs doing monster-slaying quests, we've held back due to depopulation concerns. For new artifact quests, it's location rumor storage.
>If NPCs quest a lot, it'll generate compounding location rumors that spread. If they quest rarely, you won't see it, so it'd be pointless.

No idea. Isn't Majesty some fantasy themed strategic board game?

I guess different civs just hire adventurers to fuck each others' shit up, i.e. by stealing artifacts.

This eternal circulation of artifacts probably mean that the artifact quests in a given world won't become "exhausted" too easily. It'll probably be possible to start an adventurer in one civ, steal an artifact from another civ, then start another adventurer in that civ and steal it back.
>>
Is there any way to find out who made specific artifact?

I don't remember details of each mood.

Toady actually came up with all these. It's understandable that he wants nothing to do with it now. He's trying to remove as much as possible of the juvenile edginess.

If you've played his other games(especially those on the "sub games" page), you understand that these lines are all in the spirit of the "young" Toady.

Majesty was one of the favorite PC games of my youth.
Its a strategy game, usually the player against what is essentially a thickly populated region of D&D-land, where the player takes the role of a monarch trying to build up a new city and banish the local threats.

It was notable because the Player controlled essentially nothing on the map. You never left your palace. The peasants and tax collectors did their jobs according to their own arcane schedules and could only be influenced by changing quotas. The player decreed what buildings would be built and how many heroes hired from the guilds, but the heroes themselves had their own priorities and agendas, and could be influenced mostly only by posting bounties (which Toady references).
Attracting faiths and wizards was a big deal, because it gave the player access to their magicks, which were one of the few direct tools available. Of course, you had to pay the temples a bucket of gold every time you wanted something cast.

Do you keep you metal workshops near the wood/stone workshops, or do you keep it on its own level?
>>
>>156065321
That sounds fuxking cool!
>>
>>155899208
Im from SA. Wont tell which country.
>>
>>156069721
Why would that matter?

I usually concentrate my workshops into different "modules", in which I group industries related to each other. For example, I group the smelter, the forge and the wood furnaces together in the same module. That way I only need two stockpiles: the wood stockpile next to the wood furnace and the ore stockpile next to the smelter. When the smith wants to use his forge, he just has to take some fresh charcoal and metal bars straight out of their respective workshops. This eliminates the need for excessive stockpiles.

As for the mason and carpenter, I just place each of them in their own module, allowing me to give them an extra large, well-needed stockpile. Where they're located in relation to the forge is totally irrelevant, but I usually keep all industries close to each other.

It's a great game, try it out.

The way it works is that you put bounties and rewards for shit (attacking and exploration, the sequel added defense and something I forget) and your adventurers just wander around being faggots, but they're more likely to fuck something up if they can get hundreds of gold from you for it.

32x32 is the largest square size you could use, at 80x50 tiles displayed, 32x48 is optimal if you have your game display at 2560x1440, 32x50 is pretty close for 2560x1600.

This one is 36x36 I think, not sure how well the game would size it down to 32x32 but it should work fine, it goes down to 24x24 pretty well after all.

You get a broker by appointing one in the nobles screen. A trader is a dorf which has appraiser skill highest. Dorfs train appraiser skill by being the dorf assigned to trade at the depot the first time you open the trade interface for a given visit by merchants, how much they train is determined (I think) by how much merchandise the merchants brought.

Also, adventurers don't even process time the same way fortresses do. 1 tick in adventurer mode is 1 second, but in fortress mode 1 tick is 72 seconds. It's hard to meaningfully compare them.

Possibly, but not in the foreseeable future.

Training the appraiser skill is utterly trivial and generally not something you need to give any thought at all to. So long as your broker is novice or better you don't need to bother with it at all so far as I'm aware, and your broker will most likely become better than novice the first time you trade with the first merchant caravan.

>Surprising.
That's the ratio of 32-bit downloads to 64-bit. 9% of windows downloads are 32-bit. 5% for linux and 1% for OSX. The rest are 64-bit.

Regarding total DF 0.43.05 downloads, around 10% of them are for linux and another 10% for OSX. For comparison, Steam has less than 1% linux users. So linux is 10 times more popular among DF players than the average gamer. But no matter how you look at it, it's still a niche OS that practically nobody uses for gaming.
>>
>>>/an/2225989
>>
>>156135423
Yeah, I'm not surprised that there is a higher rate among df players, but there's a good amount of people who play games besides df, and while linux has improved the selection of games you can play on it, it's still far from comprehensive, especially regarding brand new releases that aren't specifically put out with a linux version.

I embark and none of my dwarves want to equip the wooden training axe I brought, it just sits there in the Wagon and nobody chops fucking trees.
I have wood-cutting enabled in two dwarves, I designated some trees and everybody is idle.

What might cause this? I'm simply running DF through the Lazy Newb Pack because I'm a tileset casual. Other than that I'm not running any mods or nothing.
