I thought you were going to make it Edition

Thread for discussing English language visual novels and their development.

Do you have a question about an originally-Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?
/vn/ is ready to answer it. We are not them.

Shitty dungeon crawler dev back with some more primo progress. Today I made an inventory system, depicted here as a creepy face grinning down at you from top left. If I'd actually bothered drawing any inventory icons, you'd get a nice visual list of the five whole items you can carry at a time via little pictures at the top of the screen. Also the shopkeeper works now, more or less.

Lastly, to the Etrian Odyssey anon from last night, I'm glad you drew the connection (and the maps). I also got pretty sucked into EO when it came out and this is sort of my homage to the series. I'll definitely be going for the shoddy homebrew aesthetic, so hopefully it's to your liking.

That's mainly to do with how Ren'Py handles scaling down into windows.

So the same thing in its full 1080p doesn't suffer the same kind of font issues. There are one or two workarounds with regards to nearest neighbour versus bilinear scaling but generally you begin to see issues, particularly with rasterization, around 0.6-0.75 scaling

nice strawman
>>
Uh, almost lost you.
>>
>>155711549

I honestly choices that lock things away should be fairly well obvious to the player, unless there's a SUPER SECRET involved.

Like, what does reading the book entail? Were you supposed to meet the other character later that day, but you were a little late because you stopped to read, and then SHE GOT RUN OVER BY A FUCKEN CAR?
>>
>>155737580
not him but holding ctrl to mass-skip dialogue is something people do so yeah i guess
>>
>>155743508
I think choices that matter/influence something should be marked overall. Similar to the witcher 3, yellow text is to advance, move onto something or make an important decision, white text is for normal dialogue choices that don't affect anything.
>>
>>155744815

1. Go to the ice cream parlor with Alisa [EVERYONE DIES ON THIS ROUTE]
2. Flake on your date with Alisa [ONLY ALISA DIES ON THIS ROUTE]
>>
>>155744815
That's too hand holdey for a VN where choices and branching paths are literally the only thing that would make you flex your brain a little.
>>
>>155745917
I dunno. I suppose you could do that. Maybe create an "easy mode" which shows what the choices do/lead to on hover or something if you really want to show that.
>>155746095
I suppose so. I mean personally speaking my VN has the player go on a lot of side stories/quest sort of things, so it could work well for me if I wanted it, stories with a minor amount of branching paths or important decisions, I mean, actually I'd still like to know if that decision matters, it would encourage me to replay through and choose the other one if I knew they were different things.
>>
Question: an emotional inclination system that changes the choices available to your character as well as changing their dialogue in certain instances y/n?
>>
>>155748230
y good luck tho
>>
>>155748230
i'd play that if handled right
>>
>>155748230
Isn't that just the exact same as having points for individual characters or other actions, but masked as something different?
>>
>>155749428

Well no, because you can have points for individual characters as well. This would be something more like trying to make the MC feel like more of a personality you have a little more control over. I'm still trying to figure it out.

I thought those text based CYOA stories on Steam had something good going for them even if it's drastically underused
>>
>>155749916
As long as I can become a psychopath
>>
>>155750245

Literally no point in having emotional inclinations if you can't be one desu
>>
>>155750245
I imagine you could. It sounds like it affects how you talk/act to people as opposed to how characters act to you. If you want to be the jackass and get the girl, you could, or you could be the nice guy. Or if you want to be a crazy fuck who lights shit on fire, your guy might constantly call himself a blazing faggot to turn the girl on even more.
>>
>>155748230
That sounds like an absolute nightmare to write.
>>
>>155751016
Would be super easy to implement though. It would be hell to write if he had lots of things it would affect.
>>
>>155751016

I do realize that just on the basic physical level it does mean a LOT of added text. I'm not in any rush though.
>>
Does a female MC with male love interests automatically make a game otome?
>>
>>155751984
No but it leans closely on the edge. It depends how's it's handled. If it's going to appeal to girls more than boys it is, but if it's written in a way to appeal to boys more than no it wouldn't be. Dating guys us just the stereotypical prime, it doesn't mean every vn with those elements is one.
>>
>>155752315
>If it's going to appeal to girls more than boys it is, but if it's written in a way to appeal to boys more than no it wouldn't be

How do you mean?

Like, I'm a big fan of lovey-dovey stuff, angst, and drawn out romances AND CHARACTER DEATH/DESPAIR, would that appeal more to girls or boys?
>>
>>155751984
It's actually common for otome games to have a genre focus other than romance. For example, the Hakuoki games have a historical fantasy plot that often focuses more on action and violence than romance, and that has given it a lot of "cross-over appeal" with male audiences as well, but it's most definitely still an otome game about a female MC surrounded by a bunch of bishounen samurai.
>>
>>155752839
a game about a female MC with male love interests that has long drawn-out romantic arcs and is really heavy on angst and death or existential despair? you just described the vast majority of japanese otome games.
>>
>>155754051
fujos are fucked up desu
>>
>>155751984
No. By that definition, Moon would be an otome game.
>>
>>155755335

Is it not
>>
>>155752315

your game has:
>hot guys
>heavy action fighting plot

you'll get a lot of girls interested because of the hot guys involved in a dramatic story. Shonen Jump in Japan is notorious for having a HUGE crossover appeal with women since most shonen stories star good looking guys who get into intense fights/drama with other men/boys.

If your game has:
>all cute girls
>slice of life

It will probably have large crossover appeal with men exactly because "cute girls doing cute things" appeals to them.
>>
>>155759098

So cute girls + action is more boys-oriented right
>>
>>155759582
yup.
>>
>>155731739
>there's so much good free music out there.

exactly who are you trying to appeal to, anon? Target audience?
>>
>>155760780

I mean at the end of the day my audience is always gonna be myself first, I'm just wondering what other people are interested in
>>
>>155761517
depends if it's all boys, all girls, a co-ed game, or traps and trannies.
>>
>>155762442

Postapoc fantasy, co-ed, fighting-oriented, heavy angst, main character death?
>>
>>155764430
also depends on the art style and the eye candy bait. Your audience could be evenly split.

Anon, I know you're new around here, but you really need to stop trying to force progress posts. This is a very, very slow general. Progress posts are few and far between, and more often than not they'll be posted regardless of people encouraging it.
You posting your own progress is enough.
>>
Has anyone heard about the mods for Sakura Dungeon. Apparently a modder created a mod to make the game more challenging and to vary the gameplay more. He also created another mod to add in more dialogue, so that your favorite monster girl gets a certain amount of character development. Now I wish I would've waited until playing it. I don't plan to replay it though, since once was enough.

And did Winged Cloud give up on patching the game? The fixes have been stuck in the beta branch since the game launched which was months ago.

Aw, shucks. Thanks, anons. I certainly didn't take any offense.

Inventory icons are working, and they can be bought and sold for money with a custom screen. Next up: the starvation meter. Should I have it give the player's exact hunger value, or a more visually intuitive shorthand like an HP bar made of turkey legs?

Well, does knowing the exact hunger matter (if, say, you spend it to attack, it might)? Otherwise I'd go with either your visuals or maybe a one word description (Hunger: Full or starving or whatnot).

Currently, the hunger element is just a counter that dwindles as the player mucks about, acting as a limited resource. Eventually it will kill them, hopefully adding a bit of urgency.

I thought I might try digital art for the first time (been drawing with felt-tip pens for the past few months) so I bought a cheap-ass wacom for $60 and holy geez how do you guys train yourself to look at the screen and draw based on what you see without looking at your hand. Like I'll move the pen and see the line being drawn across the screen but can't FEEL it, you know? It's like I'm drawing, but with hands that have no sensation of touch.

Do I just need to practice with this thing more? Because it's really demoralizing to have to struggle to draw even basic shapes, I feel like all my circles are coming out as squiggly messes and I can't make a confident stroke to save my life.

Nigga u wot?
>>
>>155743508
In reading the book you choose to essentially skip class, so you end up meeting with the delinquent girl rather than the shy one.
>>
Yeah, I know practice is ultimately what will get me more comfortable, I guess what I'm wondering is whether there are any "modifications" I can make to ease the transition. like maybe something to give me a bit more friction between the pen and the tablet, so it doesn't feel like I'm always a smooth piece of plastic against a smooth plastic surface.

Mostly my gripe isn't that "this is hard" and "this isn't something I'm instantly good at," I get that it's a skill that you need to learn, it's more the fact that felt-tip drawing just felt "fun" in an inexplicable way from the first time I tried it even when I was bad at it, and the tablet just feels frustrating. I think I just wish it was more tactile, I don't think that moving to a screen-based tablet like the Cintiq would help any.

>>155795674
Well I suppose you could somehow turn up the pressure threshold so that you have to press hard, but that'd wear out your nibs very fast.

A problem you could be having is that the aspect ratio between your input and the screen is fucked up.

I just know for a fact that it's done by him.
Not saying you missed anything, there wasn't anything to miss. But your core statement doesn't correspond with reality, that's all.
>>
>>155806459
If that is really his work, the animation in particular, than that is something that he would not be proud of.
He can easily do more than just scrolling a sheet of layer of a poorly 2D rendered train that stopped mid way.

Such a pity.

Such a pity.
>>
>>155806820
The fuck are you expecting from a VN?
>>
>>155807049
I expect more from the artist, not the VN.
That anon claimed that it was his work, but I am still not convinced it was his all along.

I mean, knowing him he would be using a proper 3D rendered train, with sun light reflecting on the mirror, blinking as a non reflective part of the train pass through, with proper building shading cast on to it.
>>
>>155807303
Unless he works at lightning speed and does it for cheap I don't see how that would benefit a VN at all, specially when the focus is on the characters and not the bg.

well yes, considering there are a bunch of low-quality ones but with decent art constantly being churned out and get popular, unless you shill hard or your game has exceptional qriting or something and the word of mouth spreads, you'll likely to get buried.
But who cares, you won't make gorillions of dollaridoos with such a niche genre anyway, so might as well just do what you like.

I like your style! Hand-eye coordination was definitely the hardest part of going digital for me as well. There is one particular setting you can use to help with the shakes, and that's stabilization/post-correction (depending on the software you've got). If you're using the same shitty Wacom I am, you probably got Photoshop Elements bundled in? I don't remember if it was in there, but if you're willing to pitch in a little more, Clip Paint Studio definitely has it, and is all around a better application for drawing.

Otherwise, I'd recommend drawing lines quickly and decisively, since the squiggliness sets in mostly when you're drawing slow. And keep a hand on the undo button, since it might take a few goes to get it right.

Today's agenda: draw the rest of the town backgrounds and flesh out the rest of the shops. After that, I can actually make the dungeon that was theoretically supposed to be the focus of this project in the first place.

Also: I am going to put a number of NPCs in the bar to talk with, and I'd like to put in some characters from the games of other developers here in this thread. If you're interested in a cameo, and wouldn't mind having your character drawn in this style, just post an image of them and a brief description, and I'll do my best to fit them in.

A real combat system's a little above my skills, so any fighting will mostly be via text menu. The player does have three stats (physical, mental, and emotional strength), and 4 health, so I can utilize those.

The actual dungeon will be laid out as a series of rooms in a grid, each room occupying one square. If you've ever played a MUD or something like Thy Dungeonman, then it should be reasonably familiar. Once in a room, you can either interact with it or leave through one of its exits. There won't be a map feature, so you'll have to draw that yourself on graphing paper or something.

That sounds pretty cool. I understand the concern with the skill limitations. You could easily put a small map in there if you need to though, even if it's just a grid view without details. Put a red x in the current grid or something, change the grid image when you select the choice corresponding to it (you could use a sheet to save image space).

Here's one of the outfits for my main character. Feel free to use him in your bar if it helps!

I don't know how popular Everlasting Summer is in Russia but the tiers are set up like shit ($10 for a copy of the game on the platform of your choice, but it's $25 for multiplatform?) where there's nothing especially compelling above the $50 tier until you get to the $500+ tiers. VN Kickstarters rely a lot on higher double-digit tiers or lower triple digits.

Plus, the only physical item offered is an artbook at $300. I get wanting to keep shipping and production costs down, but it's very high goal for an EVN to begin with and lacks a lot of the rewards that usually sell lots.

Only about 10k of that is going into art, and even less of that into the sprites.

>>155872992
That said, I agree that they're not up to par with the rest of the assets. The backgrounds in particular look great, and the CGs show that the designs at least are functional. I think their heads are okay, but their waists are comically tiny. Together with her shoulders, it makes her look like a bodybuilder who forgot leg day. The flipper hands aren't doing her any great justice either. But it's not badly rendered or designed. Just a little off on proportions, and certainly not enough to drive me away.

For what it's worth, their animated sprites at 55k looked much more passable.
>>
why are you people freaking out about 30k? that's not even that uncommon for vn kickstarters anymore.
>>
>>155872992
Those sprites are way better than Huniepops. Hentai Protag only really has animations going for theirs. None of them are particularly impressive, but I'd still say LMR trumps the other two.
I don't know why they put so much into the backgrounds. Those are the last things that should be prioritized. Not to say they aren't important, just that I can't think of something less important.

I made an ingame choice menu. It leads to slightly different dialogues.

But how do I reemerge the path after that specific dialogue ends?
>>

>>
>>155905817
>2016
>There are languages that uses "jump"
OH BOY
>>
>>155903997
Okay, let's break it down:

"He'd been working on the reactor for hours, and though fuel cells gave a higher output in the end, the very idea of running a nigh critical core was stupid." - this line immediately gives you the wrong impression that the narrator is in Larry's head, so to speak. Also, opening with technobabble isn't great, especially when it's unclear like this bit. Why mention fuel cells? Are they using them? "though fuel cells gave a higher output in the end, the very idea of running a nigh critical core was stupid" is where the trouble lies. Draw the link more clearly between the two clauses.

throughout: "Pilot" is used like a proper noun, as in "Pilot's sleep schedule". Unless SJ's nickname is just "Pilot", make it "A pilot". And same for "Old man" and "technician" and probably more to come. I can tell you're trying a clipped style with a lot of dropped articles, but it's not always working. The worst offenders are the ones that come mid-sentence, ie: "Pilot's laughter".

Who is "Sony"?

The "lecturing youth" bit is hard to figure out. They're talking about the boss, so why does the narration make it sound like they've been discussing Sofia?

"almost all old spacecraft HAVE escaped...or BEEN salvaged." When you say "all", it's plural.

"bucketful of bolts" is an exceptionally old cliche.

PoV was solidly in Sofia's corner the whole time, until it suddenly switched to Duke. I'd really suggest keeping it consistent.

And that's the first half of the first scene. Interesting so far. You have some good TV-esque banter, but maybe a little too much of. I'd try to trim the (presumably made-up) technical jargon too. It did start getting interesting once you hit the cryopod, but I think it took too long to get there. The opening needs more of a hook (like the cryopod) instead of just the flood of banter. Stylistically, I'd take a look at some of the deviations from regular English and ask yourself if they're really adding to the prose.
>>
>>155905941
What's cool to use instead of jump?
>>
>>155905654

"Pre-Menu Text"
menu:
[Tab]"Option A":
[Tab][Tab]"Result A Text"
[Tab]"Option B":
[Tab][Tab]"Result B Text"
"Post-Menu Text"

You don't have to jump or anything. Just go back to the original indentation level and when the menu's done, it'll go there.

[tab]"Shake your head":
[tab][tab]c "No, I didn't think so."

sure if this is just a choice in reaction to a simple yes/no question (like in my simple example)

But the fact that this menu interaction could be asking the player to choose the direction of the plot progression, then it's better to split the choice-options into labels to not have 40+ lines for each menu-option.

Both versions work for their intended way.

Also here because I'm scripting out my own evn, so I figure it might be of use to me to do some sample work within the field so I can get a feel for what it is I'm really supposed to be aiming for.

But anyway, yeah. Artist and I pitched an idea to one another last autumn and it got lost in the shuffle of moves I went through, but I managed to dig out aspects of the old design document and some of his character designs. Felt like it might be worth giving a proper shot, hence why I'm here.

Your stuff looks cool by the way. Gives me a sort of Brad Neely feel.

I have a script which will probably be about 350k words when complete and a large amount of backgrounds already done, plus the majority of sprites done, and (tentatively) all the music done

Also I need 1 CG and the intro/outro cutscenes
>>
>>155937696
>350k

What IS an average wordcount for The VN, anyway

It's obviously not comparable to The Novel, I mean your average YA novel has a wordcount of 30k

Routes and suchlike would increase wordcount immensely but I feel as though the V part of the N should decrease things somewhat
>>
>>155937910
http://games.renpy.org/

probably about 4k
>>
>>155937910

>>
>>155938158

>>
>>155937507
I've got CG's/music/programming left to do in order to finish my demo.
Then comes the marketing.
>>
>>155939210

Wouldn't it be ideal to finish the whole thing first, put out the demo, and then fake progress reports to stretch it out as much as possible
>>
>>155942017
It would anon. You want to market before you even have a demo out so you can build up a fan base, no matter how small. That fanbase will be eager to play the demo. They are likely to enjoy it more than a new person as they'll have followed it for a bit, in turn (if it's not dog shit) they'll tell their friends or share it on their social media, la de da, hype, fans, feedback, eventual release to people genuinely waiting for a release.
>>
>>155942440
Oh and don't ignore anyone. Talking to them genuinely, acknowledging them, is the best way to keep a loyal fan and convert nonfans. Everyone wants to feel heard, even those with a negative impression can be handled by being polite and addressing them (a lot of people do feel guilty about possibly being rude and will give you the benefit of the doubt if you handle it well).
>>
>>155937910
>30k word count
What? That's like not even 50 pages.
>>
>>155943409

Trade paperbacks with larger print, anon

The most famous YA series (like the Hangry Games, Harry Potter, Chaos Walking, Percy Jackson, etc) usually cap at the more normal wordcount of 80k-100k per book, and that's more in the range of most mass market paperbacks. You only see much bigger wordcounts when an author is big enough to sell a book with a high wordcount (i.e. editors loosen the reins a bit because they know a book of that size will still sell because it has a certain name attached) which is why JK Rowling's later books were so fucking massive, and why Stephen King's books now are often physically twice the size of his much earlier work.

anything that is going to require more than one sitting to complete. you want people to start playing, reach the end of the demo, and then think about buying the game. if they don't hit an "end point" it's much less likely that they will come back to the demo later, and if they never hit the end of the demo there won't be the feeling that they need to buy the full thing to experience more.

Though I can't really feel immersed in it because of my v-card.
It's hard to write about feelings I've never experienced before, just parroting stuff that sounds appropriate for the situation seems to work out fine.
The worst thing about storyheavy plots in VNs is that the writer wants to educate the reader, giving life tips or giving them the author's perspective on things. It's not easy to do that as a shut-in and social retard. How do Neets deal with that shit in their VNs?

Isn't the fun of being a writer that you can live through your characters while you make them do all kinds of cool stuff you haven't done, and might never be able to do?
Also, it's not like all stories need to be 100% technically accurate. Like, if we're talking solely about H scenes, most H scenes in literally everything are 'inaccurate' because actually having sex can time more time/preparation (depending on what you're doing) and has a higher chance of being disappointing... but if you're reading sex scenes as a fantasy escape, you probably don't want to read thousands of words of the characters floundering or being awkward or whatever.

I think it's because I've slowly become annoyed with my own writing for some reason. As if it has to meet a certain standard or play a certain way, but as you say it's when you don't care you pump out stuff and my 'fun' progress is from before I had assets at my disposal. Every single time? That's uncommon in VNs, that's more often an RPG thing. Black Closet does it, but it's only just barely a VN.

Most VNs have fairly infrequent choices.

There are a couple of games where you pick what the PC says but she (usually she in those cases) barely speaks, so it's still not much.

If you're sitting for more than 8 hours a day, or ever sitting for more than 1-2 hours continuously, that's unhealthy and you need to find some way to spend less of your day with a butt in the chair.

If you're worried about hemorrhoids, I'd recommend doing some basic squat exercises. You don't have to go full /fit/ and start lifting weights (though that can help), but simply doing deep squats every day will make you a lot healthier. (pic related)

Note that some people can't even do deep squats (let alone squatting exercises with a barbell) because the muscles in their leg that would support this posture haven't been used in years. If that's you, then you definitely need to be squatting.

Patreon changed how they show numbers on Patreons, it's no longer based on how many people subbed. Most Patreons have a lot of people who sub and unsub right before the end of the month so they don't get charged, Patreon is pretty cool with it so it's normal.

>tfw literally lying in bed 14+ hours every day
>full 24 hours minus food/drink/bathroom on my days off

>>
>>156028123
I've found that I am really good at confusing cause and effect.

For one summer, I was in the mode of spending all day in bed or sitting in front of my computer (literally never going outside) and the only time I actually stood was when I was walking to the bathroom, or walking to the kitchen to get more frozen food to microwave and keep myself alive.

Then school started up again and I seemed to miraculously find the willpower to go to class, and I suddenly had a lot more energy to do other things as well.

I spent the entire summer thinking "I never go outside because I'm a sad sack of shit," but the truth was really the reverse: I was a sad sack of shit because I never went outside.

I'm not saying that things like clinical depression aren't real, but for me, "pretending" to be a normal well-adjusted person and doing all of the things a normal person ought to do has this weird effect of causing me to actually start feeling like a normal well-adjusted person.

At current iteration there is probably not much programming needs other than some interface niceties that is "hooked up" so to speak, like a proper navigational map using the new script in renpy.. I haven't had a time to touch it so I forgot what its called.

Although in the past I was more ambitious because I had more time, I was hoping to make , in additional to the stuff I have in the image, a inventory system and a calendar that is driven by my current day counting codes and can set dates and trigger events by reading from character's stats sheets. I brain stormed a lot of things but I just ran out of time.

About kickstarter,

Is it really necessary to do the side rewards, like $15 for a copy of the game is reasonable, but the numbers go up and you get stupid shit like $500 for every reward tier, double deluxe hard bound copy of the game+books+figurines, and a trip to Japan to hang out with the developer. Dumb high end, expensive and time consuming rewards like that, do people really have to put the stakes so high on the reward tiers? Especially since fulfilling all of those promises ends up putting the developer in a 10 year spiral of under development.

I actually think the best reveal for a trap is when you can sex them. Think about it. All those ladyboys pretend to be female unless it's time to whip the dick out, and people are horny by then so are more open to it. They may regret it come morning but oh well.

what do you think the point of a trap character is you dingus

traps are disgusting so i'd prefer to avoid. also people who want traps will pass over your game

>Would it be too cruel to have a reverse trap reveal on day 3 rather than day 1 for a datable character? Think that would piss people off for choosing that route?
Wait, you're making your players make an _irrevocable_ route choice on day 1, before they've gotten to know the love interests at all?

That's more of a problem for me than a gender reveal.

Just make common trap.

It's not really irrevocable as this is ran by a point system. So if you're aiming for a certain character, and gathered X many points by that time, the player may feel it was wasted.
Or should I just say 'fuck the player' and do what I want in this case?
>>156072354
While I agree, I don't think I can get away with 'them', 'they' pronouns for that long without the audience getting suspicious. Also still debating sex scenes or not only because I've noticed that games with lovable characters and no sex scenes tend to get more r34 than ones that already have sex in it. I'd like them to have fun with it. Unles you think this theory is incorrect?
>>156072503
I would hope word of mouth would reach them. There aren't enough reverse traps in the world.
>>
>>156072204
It'd only be cruel if you couldn't react with disgust and find someone else to be with. Like if you go this route allow for a gay as fuck trap route and allow for the MC to pass on the trap and maybe become total bros with someone for a friendship route.

I do like traps, but there are enough of those now. Reverse trap is new rare hotness. The game itself lets you date males or females and lets you be a male or female as well. So players can have their het or homo. Hopefully this reaches a wider audience.

Can someone educate me on this weeabo word?

Do you know what a trap is? In slang?
Now reverse it. It's not that fucking hard.

A girl that looks like a guy. A commonly known one is Uranus from Sailor Moon.

As long as there's enough time for the players to change their minds if they discover a deal-breaker about a character, it should be fine. I generally feel players should be free to play the field early in a game instead of being forced to always pick the same character every time or get a bad ending.
