Got the complete Gamemaker bundle from HumbleBundle for $15. I've always wanted to try making something related to games, is Gamemaker fine for that? Why is it looked down upon?
If it helps, I know a little bit of C and C++.
>>
>>155369793
Gamemaker is fine for 2D games. It's looked down upon by nodevs who don't know anything about making games.
>>
Have any of you guys tried to make a building game like Sim City?
>>
>>155369793
Game maker for a long while had a pretty bad reputation for how poor it was, particularly in early versions, but it has developed enough to a point where it's perfectly fine to use.
>>
>>155369793
>is Gamemaker fine for that?
It is. It actually is perfect for 2D. A little lacking for 3D though.

Since is easier to use there is a lort of shovelware made with it. But that's not the engine's fault, is the user's.

Just make them

I'm sure you can spare 5 minutes to make a single placeholder asset you'd be surprised how much you can do in such short timespan. Just model it as fast as possible so it at least roughly resembles what it supposed to be, then unwrap it (as long it's simple it should be easy, learn how to unwrap basic shapes if you can't already) paint it with 3 colors: shadows, midtones and highlights and you're done. I guarantee you that end result will be a lot better that using a cube and it took only 5 minutes

I've been going through the links in the OP and stumbled upon the MakeHuman/ManuelBastoni software for making 3d models of people, is there any downside to using them? since you're a pleb, I'll explain. /agdg/ has a cross-thread on /v/ typically once every day or every other day with an OP image of gamemaker/unity/unreal logos asking about how your game is doing, it's an unofficial semi-persistent general thread on /v/. It differs from /vg/ aggy daggy in that it's much more casual and artsy, with fewer recurring devs than here, and a few of the serious posters here cross-post their progress in the /v/ threads for exposure. The cross-posting is a baby step towards game completion and mass market appeal; the fact that you didn't know this is indicative that "you're not gonna make it."

you're gaslighting yourself. I said, and I quote, "the fact that you didn't know this is indicative that 'you're not gonna make it.'"
You don't have to post your game on /v/ to be successful, but the fact that you didn't know that /agdg/ branches off into /v/ regularly and constructively is proof that you're not informed on the community here and probably not going to be successful marketing your game when the time comes. Risk of Rain built a following and success through this methodology.
>>
>>155369793
I imagine it's the workflow people don't like.

If you do your own editor and everything, you have more control of the workflow.

But this is only recommended for really big projects.

At the start, using game maker feels kind of like "klik'n play".

But if you don't let the engine, the editor get in your way of the game you want to see finished, then it's really great.

If I would like to make a classic 2d JRPG, I would use rpgmaker vx.
If I would do a classic 2d sidescroller, I would use game maker.
A 3d game with small effort, unity.

Real big ambitious projects, Next AAA MMORPG with plus plus innovations, i would look for something that suits perfectly or modify it, or enhance it or do it from scratch(like this ever happens).

talking like a real nodev here

but.. I think this is because, when you program you go through many hardships, when you finally done it, you feel great.

it could work but I wouldn't reach that high yet. Aim for an NES/SNES tier of art first. Keep in mind Minish Cap had a team of dedicated full-time artists making multiple passes over art to make it look like the screencap here.

I think the modern/sci-fi setting suits plainer perspective, while Zelda can lean on the fantasy angle for weirder perspective and architecture.

>>
>>155381043
3D is better, you can have more detail, even with low poly.
You can make the dungeon pieces modular, and build the 3D models in a grid as well.
>>
>>155381091
>works for Cartoon Netowrk
not necessarily an animator. Could be a person who makes commercial bumps, someone making puppets, part of their live show entertainment. In fact, probably NOT an animator, since anything not Squidbillies or Aqua Teen Hunger Force is outsourced to korea anyways.
>>
>>155381306
Cool! Next question I guess then is.. What program would be best for making 3d trees, and other objects. Additionally, how much art skill is going to be required for making low-ish poly designs like the one featured in >>155380535
>>
>>155381380
Probably maya or 3ds max. For the trees in that image would probably require decent 2d art ability since its mostly texture work.

If you suck at art, you may be able to get away with painting over an image of a tree as a starting point.
>>
>>155381619
If you can indulge some more questions, could you tell me if Blender would be a usable program as well? And with these programs, is it possible I could hand draw a texture, scan it to my pc and redraw/sharpen and color the image, then use that image to wrap around the 3d object?
>>
>>155381380
Blender, it's free and easy to learn. But any 3D program will work.

Low poly environments aren't too hard to make, but the textures still require some artistic skill. 3D characters are still hard, no matter how many polys they have.

Well it took me a good few months to learn javascript/jquery. How long do you reckon it'd take to learn how to read/write to a database with php, then output json data?
>>
>>155381883
Well to texture a model you have to UV unwrap it, basically unwrapping all the faces into one flat image for the texture. So you could make some basic textures on paper and scan them in, then arrange them into the bigger texture so it fits the model. Blender and other 3D programs also allow you to draw directly on the model after it's UV unwrapped. So you can do that to touch things up.
>>
>>155382173
>receive head
>its actually a handjob
>>
>>155382128
Exactly. And the fact that most php and json tutorials online are pretty shit doesn't help at all
Anyway if I find how to do it I'll post it here..
>>
>>155382336
So, essentially I could make the base shape using models in Blender, then texture it with image files, and wrap them to fit the texture? And as you said, further edit and touch them up after they are placed on the object? This might be pretty easy for making low poly objects.

I've got a design question. Right now there is only one deck the event cards are taken but I'm aiming for a unique deck for each location (like school, seaside, apartment, woods, etc). Solving a mystery (which is required to defeat the main horror) means resolving a series of events (like school - school - city - hospital). There are two ways of doing this:

>A
>after choosing a mystery, proper events cards are drawn automatically
>finishing the mystery gives you a free action of choice (heal / buy / boost stat)
>feels more like a card game

>B
>after choosing a mystery a card-map with all locations-decks appears
>player is free to choose whatever he wants (required location is highlighted at all times)
>solving a mystery works as before
>heal / buy / boost stat all cost funds or time (which you have a limited amount of and enemies get stronger with passed time)
>feels more like an adventure game

Which sounds more fun?

As for the second question, thats a pretty round about way of doing it, but I guess you could do that. If you are going the scan route, i would recommend only using it as a guide to paint over, as the quality of the scan could possibly stand out. Also you can up the resolution of your final texture if need be.

As for wrapping it around the 3d object, yes. Its not as simple as it sounds though, look up tutorials on UVing or texturing in general to get a better idea of the process.

most of the aspect of pixel art are linked to old technical limitations like working on a palette, and using sizes that are multiple of 16.

Work have finally decided to get me a decent laptop, after waiting far too long for a new macbook pro to be released. I'm comfortable in Linux, don't own other Apple products so don't get the ecosystem benefits, and don't need to use Adobe suite in my current role. So we think we can find something that's got a higher spec for the same price as a macbook pro, and save a bit by buying without an OS.

Problem is none of us know what to get. They're all massive applefags, and I haven't built a new PC in about 7 years at this point, and have never followed laptops closely.

I know old thinkpads were good, back when they still had IBM logos and a clitmouse on them at least. So I immediately thought of those, but I'm extremely wary after the Lenovo malware incidents last year, and what I perceive as their descent into producing cheap plasticky consumer laptops.

Anyone have recommendations for high end laptops? What are you using?

Why would you ask if game maker was fine for making games? What would make you think Gamemaker was fine for making a video game?

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE ASK STUPID FUCKING QUESTIONS.

>>155386202
Yeah, currently using a mac mini at work, and a (ageing) gaming PC at home. This is to give me something better than the mac mini which isn't pulling it's weight, but also work for on-site debugging / long train journeys.

The ability to drive multiple external monitors would be nice, since I'm using 27" Dell monitors right now which are amazing.

the content of the thread matters. Shitposting and off-topic trolling/arguments can deem it a lost cause.

The timing matters. They frequently last 4-6 hours of intermittent posting, come close to but don't always hit post limit. If someone tries to start a new one too quickly, even if the other one just ended, it may be deleted just for spamming(remember there are no true "generals" on /v/, a cooldown time of several hours is advised)

Current events matter. There was a rise in amateur dev posting because of the humble bundle discount, which loosened the rules on that type of thread staying up longer and more concurrently. Be aware of current events and who's posting what times of the day

MODS are DOGS, sometimes you're just unlucky and they delete a perfectly valid thread for no good reason(that we can see). Just try again later is the motto of the cambodian betta fish breeding online forum.

Don't listen to >>155386138, the XX20 series is the last great Thinkpad line.

If you're looking for something for long train journey's, I'd get an X220 with an IPS screen. With a 9 cell battery, you can get 9 hours of use. Add a battery slice and that jumps up to 18 hours. They're surprisingly powerful little machines (and lighter than Macbooks). Side note: although officially Lenovo says you can only use 8 gigs of RAM on an X220, a 64 bit operating system will allow you to use a full 16.

If you want something a lot beefier, get a W520. Quad core i7's for intense tasks, and a potentially decent laptop GPU (it's still a laptop GPU, but the 2000M is not terrible). The CD drive is also a nice touch for older stuff. This line has been succeeded by the new P50/70 series (which have Xeon processors in them and can utilize 64 gigs of RAM). If your employer is insane, you might be able to get one of these.

If you want something in between, get a T420. If you're going for this option, however, make sure you're not just getting a larger X220. Some T420's have the same specs as a common X220 in terms of processor and GPU.

There's also the T520, which is just going the other way towards the W520 hardware and size wise.

The reason this line is recommended is because it's the last line to use the classic keyboard (not chiclet), and chasis. The hardware in these machines will stand up for a while provided you don't intend to play the latest gayms on them. Although you could hook an external GPU + power supply to play more modern games on them. If you're going to do this though, make sure you've got decent processor, since that's probably where you'll get bottlenecked.

Last note: The X230 and T430 can be modded to take X220/T430 keyboards. This allows you have some better hardware, without the shitty ass keyboard the newer computers have.

tl;dr X220 for portability, W520 for power, T420 for middle of the road, and P series for MAX POWER.

you gain back any weight lost in 5 minutes if you don't do it properly

step 1: cut sugar, lotsa calories, appetite booster, especially high sugar shit like soda
step 2: balance your gut, use probiotics, will further adjust your appetite
step 3: reduce carbs, basically complex sugar, prefer fatty foods, vegetable oils, fish oils, protein rich veggies and meats i.e. "eat healthy"
step 4: prefer all day consistent activity over high excersize i.e. take the stairs and use a standing desk fatass

that's it, then you can count calories and shit but by this point you shouldn't need to

Ketosis isn't part of a "natural" diet, it's an emergency mechanism your body is forced to use when you lack the glycogen to run your brain as a result of not eating enough carbohydrate.
Also, there is no evidence at all that keto diets actually drop weight faster than any other sort of deficit diet and there's also no evidence to suggest any other advantage over proven diets. However, it's quite easy to become malnourished on keto due to keto's very poor micro-nutrient layout and consistently high fat intake is correlated with numerous chronic illnesses, not the least being gall stones.

Keto is meme fad diet with zero proven benefits and you are a moron if you pick it up.

How does this game sound conceptually? The player is perpetually holding a parasol and can't jump the only way to regain hight would be through gusts of wind and other such things. The objective would be to make it to the end of each level, the levels can be about going down, up, left, right, or diagonal. An example of a diagonal based level would be going up the side of a mountain.

just tweaking a camera event to let it project onto a ring around a point instead of just lines or points, so the camera can smoothly rotate around a fixed point at a minimum distance, which would be a lot simpler to program than the actual orthogonal projection code its recycling which has problems with asymptotes I need to tidy up

It's okay. The only market that's going to crash is the mobile games one.
While we joke about AAA games being garbage on average they're actually pretty fun still.

Hey AGDG! Sim Loli dev here. I'm not sure how I should handle items. I was thinking of giving some items uses (could double as durability?), but then I realized in the inventories I already combine identical items like this.

I'm kind of wondering if I should stop combining them entirely, or if I should keep it but remove uses?

Do you think that would be confusing having some of them be like rope x 10 but then seeing chloroform (9/10)? I'm also thinking that when I have other items they might have more unique attributes, like having an owner for toys/gifts/clothes so I don't even know. If it's durability though, I think a % might be better than a use maybe? Like if you saw 86% vs (860/1000) since that's getting kind of long. Or maybe I could not show it in the name, but just in the box on the right? Or make it show only if it's not at 100%? I don't know what I'd have durability for though, since it's not like it's a roguelike or anything, so the only thing I can think of right now is the chloroform bottles, since carrying one around per-use might be a bit much I guess? But if it stacks in menus it makes me wonder what's the point of having uses.

>>
>>155419196

I was thinking more about like if you had some equipped (or hotkey'd) items thing. It might make sense there since it's still the same item, but I guess you'd probably want it to go to the next one in that case when you ran out...

Anyway what should I work on? I was working on the item crap so I could have gifts/etc for the lolis and maybe implement starvation/feeding, since right now only their urine/drink system is implemented, not food.

From a gameplay perspective, what do you guys think would be good for daily care? Should there be automatic feeding/etc where you open some menu and specify how much of what to feed them per day? Should it be personal interaction via the dialogue? Both, but maybe give some way to have it increase the impact of the food/etc if you hand it to them in person? Or make them associate it with you more?
>>
>>155420425

|-Chloroform x 4
|--- Chloroform (9/10)
|--- Chloroform (9/10)
|--- Chloroform (3/10)
|--- Chloroform (3/10)

instead of

|-Chloroform x 4
|--- Chloroform (9/10) x 2
|--- Chloroform (3/10) x 2

Might be better for something like

|-Teddy Bear x 3
|---LauraB's Teddy Bear
|---HannaF's Teddy Bear
|---AnnieC's Teddy Bear

>>155420523

That's what I had originally, then I added in uses for some reason, I forgot why.

It's a sandbox-style game. So maybe you want to befriend lolis, or maybe you want to become super-Fritzl.

holy shit, this is from when I joined one of those "fan game" projects ages ago, it never went anywhere, but we still had some fun with dem bros. Top notch paint skillz right there.

nostalgia'd hard.

Thanks for testing it. Sounds secure enough. I don't imagine anyone will care enough to go through any more effort than just changing a variable, and if they do, they deserve it.

What do you see in it that makes it annoying to read/understand?

l'm using pygame to try to do evolving neural creatures and hopefully export it into unity later. What other module do you recommend if not pygame?

>manually making a state machine when Python has generators (what Unity incorrectly calls coroutines)

Finally, there isn't really anything good for Python gamedev. Just drop it.

Write code so that a completely different person (of appropriate skill) could understand it. What if you don't touch that code for weeks or even months and need to come back to it?

I cannot express how much this comment triggers me. I once collabed with a motherfucker like you. I couldn't understand a shit of his code. When I asked him about some lines of code 50% of the times he did not even remember how it worked.

I ended up dumping the project and leaving that chimpanzee to his luck. Kys

To be fair, the average AGDG dev drops their game in a week or so. Hence, they don't tend to give a shit about poor coding since they've never faced the consequences.

I want to make a puzzle game with time elements (i.e you could set a mark on your current location that lasts 10 seconds, use that time to press a switch to open a door and go back to that point). How hard would this kind of stuff be for a first-timer in UE4?
