My friend asked me why I thought Melee/Brawl was more of a party game than a fighting game, and now he refuses to give me rides. Should I give in and tell him I was wrong?

I just picked up Street Fighter V. This is my first fighting game, ever (less you count one time with a kid who wanted to show off how good he was at Blaz Blue in High School), how do I stop sucking? I'm getting my ass handed to me even in Casual. Playing Chun-Li.

4. Accept the fact some people have played fighting games for years and you're starting off fresh. They too once upon a time took dozens of losses before they even got a match.
5. Look for online tutorials, it's pretty easy to search stuff for SF5 on youtube.
6. If possible, get someone to coach you how to get started or if nothing else, help you out.
7. Have fun between 1 to 6, because otherwise you'll just burn out and rq instantly.

I really hate the "Alpha 3 died because it was a broken game" meme. Most people who say that have never played it and are only regurgitating what they've heard other non-informed players say.

Newsflash: All of the major three major Capcom fighting games circa 2001-2008 (3s, mvc2, cvs2) were broken. That didn't stop the community from playing them for nearly a decade. Let me break down why a3 REALLY died.

First of all, it became an old game fast. A3 came out in 1998, 3s was released in 1999 later followed by mvc2 in 2000 and cvs2 in 2001. A3 cabinets started disappearing, you had to go to a hardcore arcade to even find it. Even if you could find a cabinet, chances were nobody was playing it next to the mega-popular mvc2. People who didn't like mvc2 played 3s or cvs2. The game was basically dead on arrival. You all know how the FGC drops old games for new ones overnight. Three new games in such a short time-span gutted the A3 community.

Secondly, it had no true arcade console port. When Evo made the switch to console, the Canons weren't going to make an exception. If the game isn't going to be at Evo, the one time a year the community really got together at that time, why would you bother playing it? You had to play what the competition played in those years, you had no other choice because of how small the community was. A3 not being featured at Evo was probably the biggest reason A3 died in the US.

Japan still played the game until SF4 came out. Daigo went so far as to say it was as good a game as Capcom could ever make. Anyone who complains about V-ism destroying the game is ignoring the strength V-ism brought to the game. All the mid-tier, lame-ish characters can actually compete with the top-tiers with V-ism. Characters like Cody, Ryu, Zangief, and Sagat, who are normally completely outclassed by Dhalsim, can actually reasonably fight the top-tiers in V-ism. More than half of the roster is playable in V-ism.

I didn't attend Smash events, but I did visit the US in order to attend fightan events (such as EVO, CEO etc) and some of them happened to have Smash events going on, too. I had experience with the UK and French communities so I was curious as to how things can be in the US and in Japan, too.

I must admit that I've been left disappointed by all of them for a reason or another, it's just that Smash is one specific thing. I was glad to not meet any Smash people in Japan.

In EU, speaking strictly about Smash, it's a lot of young people but they're mostly normies, so they aren't much of an issue. They play somewhat well but most of them know their own limits and a good half of the people I meet at tournaments are girls.

I agree wit hyou that there are people who come just to see celebrities and they polute the pools, brackets and so on. They don't have their place here, they're like LoL fans coming to see any of those players and only that.

I'm not a good player but I attended EVO 2014. I had a lot of fun and actually did better than expected (improved there thanks to pressure). That being said, I did enter a salty room at some point (I think it was on the Friday or Saturday) and I spared a bit with the people in the room. I mostly got destroyed, but I used the very little knowledge I gained there the next day in pools (USFIV mainly), which allowed me to 2-0 two of the guys in the room who were in my pool (and who had beat me the day before in the salty room).

Thing is, I have a positive view on it because Vegas was fun and it was a blast to win when I won, and to take pics with that 14yo dude who came with him mom, wanted to make an album of his trip and was happy to have played with a foreigner.

Tournaments to people who aren't pro can be adventures in other ways than just "meeting celebrities". I'm really happy to have met that guy I spoke of right above, just like I'm happy to have met this 40yo NEET that I played on Blazblue. I'm also happy to have won and have learned, but I must admit that in every single tournament I've attended outside of Japan, bad attitude has been the sole negative point and the US took the crown.

TL;DR: fuck thuggery, fuck carebears, but fuck thuggery more. Carebears bring money, thugs remove people.
