>We've returned from the sequence of journeys! Here are recordings of the streams from the two tracks at the Roguelike Celebration: Room 1, Room 2. Direct link to our talk. Schedule to help you navigate.
There are a lot of B12 tasks piled up to unbury ourselves from, but we should be getting back to work toward the artifact release again soon.
The actual df part is around 4:50 in while they link they gave is like 4:38?
how do I find the underworld
how do I pick shit up in Adventure mode without it going into my hands so i cant use my shield?
>>155260652
You don't, you just put the items away after picking them up.
>>155260152
Cavern 1 can be accessed by any surface cave (dark grey rough stone) or from MOST dwarf fortress sites, and some older goblin sites. The other cavern levels can be found by downward passages or by climbing down a chasm.
be aware that navigating the underground cave levels is a fucking nightmare, not only because you can't fast travel outside of underground roads, but also because if you ever need to sleep you're likely to be ambushed by predators.
predators the size of fucking elephants.
don't even think about trying to access hell in a pure adventure mode game either. though you can access it by finding an original goblin site and entering the keep the demon used as its throne.
>>155261003
> most dwarven sites
correction: most dwarf FORTRESS sites, and only those fortresses which have an underground connection to other fortresses or to deep-dwarf mountain sites.
>>155260652
'p'ut the item into your inventory.
also you should probably consider pressing the "strap wielded items to body" button so you don't go around with your sword and shield out all the time. the NPCs are programmed to take offense to strangers holding equipped weapons.
>>155261003
Well, if you find one of the demonic underworld spires you can usually get down into hell and drop the whole thing.
can someone please explain to me how fortress and adventure mode mix in with each other? It sounds really interesting but I dont get it.
>>155261789
They're two different ways to play in the world you generate.
what do you guys think of gnomoria? this is not bait, honest question. have you ever play any df clone? did you like it?
>>155261789
While you play a fort, history keeps taking place around your embark, and while you play an adventurer your fort keeps trundling along doing what it do.
>>155220681
Please insert reaction image expressing approbation here.
>>155261496
>you can usually get down into hell and drop the whole thing.
No, YOU can. Other people, especially someone who's asking how to find the underworld, might have a bit of trouble trying something like that.
post rare toadies
>>155263180
You don't gotta be a superventurer to do it from hell.Surving afterwards though...
>>155263989

One layer aquifer.
I need to get through it.
I'm not gonna use a collapse to cover it.
Is there a way to do it without pumps?
>>155266514
Pumps, collapses, and ice are the only means I know of for getting through aquifers.
>>155266673
>ice
Can you dig through ice?
If not, I have no idea how this works.
>>155265796
>no fun allowed
>>155266959
Yes, you can dig through ice as though it were stone, or at least you could last I checked, and I'm fairly sure it hasn't changed. The aquifer water won't freeze unless it's exposed to the sky though, and then only if the weather is cold enough in that spot. Just be careful to prepare for when it thaws, if it will.
>>155267438
fun is perfectly okay
shitty memes are not

Hey /dfg/ does anyone know or have access to raws for dragonkin?
Sometimes you just want to wrestle a dragon as a dragonkin.
>>155267543
Okay, so.
Good news: I got through the aquifer and into the caverns.
Bad news: I accidentally broke a wall that did not have a floor above it, and now the aquifer is pouring into said caverns.

>>155270689
Did you do a cave-in in adventurer mode to do it? Well done!

>>155271239

>>155270713
Spireslaying is the real framerate killer, an aquifer in adventurer mode is just comedy.
>>155270689
>>155271057
I assumed we were talking about fortress mode. How did you do that as an adventurer?
I've been playing since early 2008 and this honestly is the first time I've ever seen this happen.
>>155272214
You've never had microcline in 8 years?
>>155272214
Microcline? Never heard of it. Must be a rare mineral.
>>155272214
What the fuck is microcline
>>155271057
>Did you do a cave-in in adventurer mode to do it?
Originally, I was doing this.
Then I got bored and felt it would be more fun to do the mining manually with advfort and a pickaxe.
>>155271601
>How did you do that as an adventurer?
I broke the wall that allowed the aquifer to flood using advfort.
>>155272234
Yep, though I barely touched DF from early 2011 to mid 2014 and now that I think of it, I've made a lot of aboveground forts.
>>155274502
>aboveground forts.
>>155271601
Build a wall over something so it has no other support > drop the wall > punch a hole through thin floors in caverns and shit.
>>155275187
If you're a flying race you can find a minecart and use a reaction to make uh, 413 units of water in the cart, then drop it to make an ice floor hanging in mid-air. If you do more water or drop water again you can freeze yourself into an ice wall, gotta be 5.0+ speed to do that remotely safely, fair warning.
The hanging ice floors will sit there until melted or you save/load the map again, which lets you precision cut things before building, or clear magma for building on, it's one of the tricks I use for volcano tube homes.
This is in 43.05 though, no advfort yet.
>>155275187

>>155277757
DF is for high end PCs.
>>155277757
You did the right thing.
>>155277807
Yeah I'm kinda realizing that, FPS death takes much longer to set in and world creation is surprisingly fast, also I'm experiencing less crashes, it's good.
Could've spent less on a video card if I knew AAA shit wouldn't hold my attention for longer than 3 hours.
>>155278159
Yea but, what if you suddenly wana play a AAA title?

>>155281049
I remember reading the story of Bravemule before even knowing about dwarf fortress. A few years later when I did discover the game, I went back and read it again. Pretty cool feeling to find context to what looked like a really cool game/story.

Welp.
Epic rapper 2Bone is now king.
I have a problem in adventure mode. I want to slay monsters but when I go to their lair, no one is ever present. I have waited long times but nothing seems to change and this reoccurs on almost every lair I visit. How do I even find these monsters?
>>155272214
I've been playing since 2012 and literally all of my embarks have had microcline.
>>155290568
Have you ever considered that by invading their homes with the sole purpose to slay them, you were the real monster all along?

>unicorn gets tired of his shit and stabs him in the head
>2nd fisherdwarf jumps into the river in terror and promptly drowns.
My fisherdwarfs are idiots. I am glad they are dead.
>>155292996
Fisherdwarves probabaly have higher mortality rates than chained dogs.
>>155292197
Newest possible.
>>155293832
Only 5 years? Then it's down to bad luck with world activation. Beasties don't just idly wait for you in their lairs 24/7. They roam around, terrorizing the countryside.
If you want an ever-present threat, find a necromancer tower. There's always loads of zombies and usually only one of the necromancers wanders out at a time.
>>155279581
That human on my fortress map was a bandit, he jumped my wagon befor I could even deconstruct it. Luckily I brought 5 puppers with me. The pupper that got him is very injured, pray for my pupper /dfg/
Should I be worried?
>>155296334
I'm sure it's nothing to be concerned over.
Why the fuck does my military not go and all pick up all the copper shit I made for them?

How do I kill a Hydra in adventure mode? That sounds pretty menacing task.

>>155299304

>>155298750
Are they actually hard to kill now? They were fairly easy in older versions, back when they didn't have 7+ simultaneous attacks. Pretty much any well-trained military dorf could kill a hydra 1vs1 in advfort mode.
>>155299627
I haven't dared to encounter it yet, as literally everyone in my world is talking about Hydra as a legendary beast that has killed god knows how many. I'm attached to my adventurer so going to face off is absolutely nerve-wrecking. I'm pretty sure it's going to be quick death for me.
>>155299970
lol just save scum like everyone else
>>155299970
I assume you already have maxed stats and legendary+ combat skills. Are you a demigod or vampire? Shouldn't be too hard if that's the case. Just sneak in, pike/spear its heart/lungs, flee, repeat until you get a good first strike. Don't bother with the heads.
>>155299970
Become a necromancer and throw zombies at it, then revive it once it dies.
>>155300124
But isn't that unfair though.
>>155300141
Demigod, but I'm only good with a sword. I guess I'll keep training.
>>155300141
>Are you a demigod or vampire
>not being a demigod vampire necromancer on every adventurer
>>155300141
>>155301156
Plus my world doesn't have vampires. I tried searching for one but it seems there were two and they have both been killed.
I don't know if more vampires are randomly spawned, but becoming a vampire now seems near impossible so I'm training the regular way.
>>155301156
>demigod vampire necromancer
>>155301391
Demigod vampire alone is pretty overpowered. Made an adventurer whose goal was to cleanse the world from life and he became very proficient at it.
>>155300859
Eh, weapon skills aren't that important. The key point is that you need something to penetrate the hydra's upper body deep enough to damage its innards before it can fight back. I'm not familiar with swords because they're objectively the worst weapon in DF, but I guess 2h sword might have a reasonable stab attack?
What matters the most is high stats (agi, tough, willpower, str, end), and defense skills (armor user, observer, dodge, shield user) so you don't get killed instantly. Also, be sure your combat pref is set to dodge/move around, hydras like to charge you. Bonus points if you can make it charge into obstacles.
>>155301156
>playing OP as fuck characters
Boring.
>>155301784
I'm usually fighting with a scimitar as it's very effective at decapitations. Also very useless against Hydra as it's designed to slash. I guess I'll start learning spear.
Thanks for the tips.
>>155300124
How do I do this and does it work for fort mode? Prob won't do it just want to see my options.
>>155302461
when you fuck up, just kill the process
also, I only do it in adv mode. in fort mode, it's more fun to take responsibility for your fuck-ups and bring things back on track
In my fort of 85 dwarfs, I usually have 8-13 idlers at any given time.
is this an acceptable level of inefficiency, or am I doing something wrong?
>>155302814
You are not hauling enough, do you have a stone stockpile and are you digging deeply and greedily?
>>155302940
Nope, I'm not really digging at all. I have more bronze bars than I know what to do with, and since most of my industry is based on mass producing shellcrafts, I dont think I need gems either.
So I just haven't bothered digging yet. Is this a mistake?
>>155302227
Axes are way better at lopping off body parts. I see swords as a bad compromise between axes and spears in the context of native dwarven weapons. They can slash, they can stab, but they're not very good at either.
Pikes are somewhat better than spears, so learn that instead - unless your dorfs have quality steel (or adamantine) spears.
What should I do with these? I'm tired of making new cages

Sinur the spearman didn't make it out alive.
So. Marching armies aka invasions. Anyone got experience dealing with those as an adventurer?
I decided to try and defend nearby hillocks from some goblin army, but I have no idea what I'm doing.
The invasion event started 6 days ago. I'm at the hillock, interrogating locals. Everything seems peaceful and some drunks claim that the goblin lord leading the siege is in a nearby region to southeast, possibly less than day out. Should I just wait and see what happens? I had a caravan come to my trade depot and when they got into it a message popped up and I peeked on the conversation. Then a bunch of options came up and I set some livestock to priority. Then I breezed through the next few options and the window closed. Then I thought "how am I supposed to pay for this?" So I pressed q on the depot and sent all my gems into it. Then some time passed and the traders left without any of my gems and I didn't get any lovestock!!1! What the heck guys?

>>155335817
I am fully capable of ignoring my nose and breathing on automatic despite the image, but you are aware of your tongue and that you have your legs crossed.
Take over a site and recruit several hearthpersons. Kill a Roc and three or four bandits, tell people about it, tell stories in marketplaces about your Roc kill. Tell tavern keepers about this stuff.
Go visit your own fort and tell people there about it.

This isn't complete, there are some statuses missing but I don't have a newer one. Selecting things after the caravan shows on the map is fine, you can also just load stuff out there before autumn hits since you know they'll be coming.
When you're in the trade screen you select the stuff you want on the left and the stuff you want to buy it with on the right, so you can oversupply your depot and then just choose the closest match to the stuff you want.
>>155338745
>>155338876
Ok thanks guys, I guess one of my hunter dwarfs is sleepwalking? Lmao I hope he doesn't get himself into trouble with his sleepwalking antics.
>>155338593
Stand in a keep or mead hall and tell someone you claim the site, when there is noone else with a legit claim around you will get a popup box like this, and you can then invite people to become your hearthperson.
You have to stay there or you lose claim though, so what you want to do is wait for stragglers to trickle in, then give the lord/lady position (ask favor > offer position) to one of the hearthpeople, and they will inherit the ones you already gathered, giving them a strong claim over the site.

You can't move items to the trade depot when there isn't a caravan on the map. You can stockpile stuff near the trade depot. If that's what you meant it wasn't obvious, and you kind of need to spell it out for someone so obviously green.
>>155339201

Apparently bone bolts are pretty lame. My hunter pumped 75 of them into one kangaroo and it never died. It left the map before he could reload a third time. Also:

I have a situation. I guess I ignored the last message from the outpost liaison during my first year and he left unhappy. Now its like 4 years later. I only received 1 migrant wave at the beginning when he first visited. The dwarves never come to trade with me and I rely on the humans once a year for my magnetite/iron imports and any world news. The first year I met with the human guild leader, he told me three pages of events about 2 major goblin armies and tons of refugees. I'm assuming my civilization was wiped out.
Now I have 16 dwarves, 2 of them are very young children. I have a rocking tavern set up and I need to attract mercenaries asap. Do I need to put one of my 14 valuable workers as a tavernkeeper for this to work? Can I still get a migrant wave?

>>155350814
Yeah, bolt material actually matters now. Let them shoot up wildlife with wood/bone and train with material restricted wood/bone only and have an escort nearby so they don't get shit on in melee. Import copper bars, copper ores, all armor and weapons, cages, bolts, trap components so you can melt. Depending on your civ you can get upwards of 70 copper bars a year just from imports which is enough for 3 quivers.
>>155377049
There's a bug where if they leave unhappy, they're glitched at the edge of your map and it takes a good 20-30 years for whichever dwarf is blocking to go insane and probably attack and kill a bunch of your swarves. That's a known bug. Civs that have reactions to produce materials don't have to have access to the necessary reagents to make those materials in order to bring them for trade. The dev wants to focus on stupid shit like the storyteller AI instead of simulating a world like DF does. He also said there will never be z-levels. So the game is, at best, stuck at the technical level of DF2006. Plus, the maps and entity counts are tiny because the game engine is a godawful piece of shit. >>155395714
But your tileset is way worse than having crisp pixel graphics. There are three glaring main issues.
First, many shapes are fucked up because the pixel art scaling algorithm used did a lot of misinterpretations. E.g. the inside of o is a square but the outside is octagon, although both shapes should match.
Second, diagonal lines (e.g. Z and inside of 0) are jagged in a way that just looks like an artifact from poor scaling algorithm - which it is. You don't get jaggies like that with proper NN-upscaled pixel art and 2D print mode and texture_param nearest.
Third, you have partial transparency background in tiles that commonly appear within text (. , ') so you have those ugly tile rectangles here and there within text unless you change that to truetype.
All of that just looks awful. How can you like it?
>>155397625

>>155398115
Oh yeah, I forgot about kobolds. I guess they could be called a civilisation by some.
>>155398357
the game literally counts them as civilised. look up their entities in legends, and you'll see that they're referred to as "civilisations"
>>155398063
I didn't use an algorithm, and you are talking about this set right: >>155384291 the transparencies are a personal preference but I do have versions without them (pic related). The shapes with the z/0 jaggies and such I left because I like them, the o exterior was a stairstep shape, I trim the stairs off to smooth it out.
Vorpal because I took the existing jagged edges and cut them down to a sharp diagonal.
>>155398656
In any case, I was talking about civilisations that were somewhat civilised, living in cities or some such.
>>155398870
Worth noting that if you want to apply the "inside is rectangle outside is not" criteria, 6, 9, male/female symbols, A, B, P, R, a, b, d, e, g, p, q, accented e/a/A/o/O, pot, anvil, bed, earring, egg, even the boulder I suppose.
That isn't the look I was going for with the set though, which was literally curses_640x300 > direct upscale x3 in gimp > rotate the eraser and expand it a few pixels > clip off corners.
>>155398870
>I didn't use an algorithm
So? Doesn't matter who did it. The original set surely did, its flaws are obviously characteristic of a bad pixel art scaler.
>the o exterior
I mentioned o just as an *example*. Almost every character has issues stemming from the same bad scaler. #%+-/=HIT[\]_il are literally the only normal text characters that aren't fucked up.
>>155400056
The original set was curses_640x300, I resized it in gimp with no interpolation, just direct 3x to fit 1920x1080, and then clipped the corners by hand.
You're talking to the bad pixel art scaler, is what I'm trying to say.

Actually, scratch that. Now that I look at the hq3x example I posted, it looks much better than I remembered. Only 45deg corners (like on the arrows) and cause an obvious shape mismatch.
>>155401664
Here ya go, one with a bunch of stuff going on.
>>155401876
Well heck, that's kinda the effect I was going for, but I have no clue how to make gimp speak hq3x and whatnot, it just has none, linear, cubic, and... lancos?
All I know is it went from a block of pixels like this:
[1][2]
to one like:
[111][222]
[111][222]
[111][222]
I figured that was just direct scaling, but if there is a fancy name or something, neat!
>>155402531
>direct scaling
That would be nearest neighbor scaling.
But your tileset sure as hell isn't NN scaled. This is what curses_640x300 looks like with 3x NN and transparent background.
>>155402237
>I assumed they where working together
They sort of are. Since the modders know that they have to be accepted into the holy Mephtershit canon in order to have anyone play their mods, most of them agree to have their work added. The extra players is all they get though. The only one to actually profit is Meph.
>>155405220
>modders know that they have to be accepted into the holy Mephtershit canon in order to have anyone play their mods
Literay what the fuck are you talking about? I use mods frequently and Meph has nothing to do with which mods I use.
Wow, you can get wrestling from zero to legendary in less than a minute real time. I wish weapon skills were as effortless to increase.
>>155406327
With it's own subforum and wiki and all, Mastershit is generally treated as the "official DF mod". It comes as no surprise that it has far more players than any single (non-profit) mod. The only way to get a considerable playerbase for your mods is to give in to Meph, and work for free so he can make big shekels.

If you want absolutely full utilisation of your Dwarfs, go for it
If you don't mind a few inefficiencies here and there and enjoy the character of a naturally realized fort, then cast aside the 3rd party utilities and play Dwarf Fortress the way it was MEANT to be played (this also means don't use square tilesets)

That depends. It's not really a quest log, but that's a good mnemonic for the hotkey Q. It's a list of everything you know. Events, civs, people, monsters, sites, regions.
Don't expect any gamemode of DF to be a typical casual game, it's more like a complete fantasy world simulator.
>>155437009
I haven't looked into any of this myself, but from what people say I think the idea is that Meph didn't hustle at all, but just profits off of other people's work while doing next to nothing himself. You wont lose if you read the guide carefully. "DF is hard" is a meme.
Farming is easy as fuck - set up and forget, no need to water, and even witout farming, food is very easy to get; dwarfs dont eat too much and you will eventually end up with shitton of food(and food in barrels dont rot, so hardcore);
animals as well dond eat much - non-grazers feed on thin air and produce massive loads of meat and other shit, no need in water as well;
any enemies except maybe webspitting fb's are no threat for half-decent military squad(and you have more than enough expendable dorfs to draft and make as many squads as you want);
enemies cant dig to your walled off fortress, and raised bridge is ultimate defence(because there is no siege weapons), if you go without a bridge - traps easily can catch or kill almost any hostile creature;
industries dont require instuments, almost all of workshops can be built with one piece of any material - smith dont need a hammer, cook can roast and boil without kitchenware and fuel, carpenter dont need an axe, saw and nails, brewing and tanning goes witout consumable materials etc.;
economy is broken: you can cook disgusting shit with legendary chief, add some worn socks to the deal - and buy all goods from caravan;
you dont need to heat and light the fortress - dorfs are completely ok living in damp and cold hole underground, and even visiting humans will read books in pitch-dark library.
After you understand the interface, df becomes very easy, even casual i can say. One of the easiest survival games out there.
Even rimworld offers harder survival challenges, and is more detaild in many aspects.

kek, how did you manage to fit so much rimworld fanboy bullshit in one post?
Farming doesn't require water? Can't get muddy soil without water. Don't tell us you're farming on the surface like a fucking elf.
No threats? Clearly you've never seen any fun syndromes, evil weather or literally unkillable FBs, nor breached HFS nor played tofps death
Enemies can't dig? They can with dfhack features. Not to mention building destroyers, flyers and swimmers.
Traps can kill hostiles? Wrong again, all the dangerous ones are trapavoid.
Industries don't require instruments? lol, that describes RW, not DF. You need axes to cut wood, picks to mine, bolts to hunt, etc.
Generating money is a non-issue in both games, but DF economy is nowhere near as broken as in rimworld. DF has real caravans coming from real sites within the game world, limited to whatever resources the civ actually has access to... and rimworld has arbitrary rng bullshit.
Talking about heat in context RW vs DF content? It's funny because RW's temperature system is a joke compared to DF. No melting points, no boiling points, no ignite points, no cold/heat damage points, no specific heat capacity. Just one retarded "flammability" factor, lmao.
As expected of you at this point, your interpretation of light is ass-backwards like everything else. Dorfs *prefer* darkness and cave adaption is a thing.
Also, '''''survival''''' game? That's fucking hilarious, I guess simcity is a '''''survival''''' game as well. Where did you even get that idea? It is because rimworld tries to be one, despite failing hard?
>>155442861
>Farming doesn't require water? Can't get muddy soil without water. Don't tell us you're farming on the surface like a fucking elf.

Holy fuck dude, don't get that asshurt just because someone compared DF to RW, most of his points are right even without the RW comparison
Modifying the game to fix it doesn't fix the game itself, and not only will diggers come some update anyway, their fast as fuck digging would fuck things up way too much unless you heavily modified how their digging works (slower, more rubble and shit maybe), which knowing Toady would mean modifying how dwarves dig too. Digging is somewhat broken right now, you shouldn't be able to carve a whole fort with just two miners in just a year.
Non rotting food is indeed retarded, at least make the cooks useful by using preservation methods: salting, smoking, drying...
Workshops requiring actual tools will probably become a thing somewhere down the line once activity areas are coded, the current system is clearly not there.
And no matter how advanced the heat system is, it's kind of a moot point if we can't even make fires for our dwarves.

Also, what's up with the blue uniforms in the photo? Are you a nurse or something?
>>155443661
Probably not. Honestly it's better to let the world generation run for some time, maybe a century or two.
That way civs and their power relations will have more time to mature, more sites will be established. More outlaw groups, more armies, bigger towns, basically more of everything. Plus hunting the remaining megabeasts as an adventurer will be kind of a big deal when hundreds have already tried to do so but have ended up dead. Ditto for taking over huge sites owned by powerful groups.
New worlds aren't terribly interesting, it takes time for things to get established even if you max the number of initial sites. But if you want to constantly show up in history, then yes, you'd need to play from the start and find a way to keep thing interesting in the long term. Slowly build history where your adventurer plays a prominent role. A shame you can't establish new towns or forts as an adventurer yet, only insignificant little camps.

That way civs and their power relations will have more time to mature, more sites will be established. More outlaw groups, more armies, bigger towns, basically more of everything
But the older the world is there's also more chance that a lot of stuff will get wiped out during world gen. There's definitely a sweet spot which can take some effort to find, since it depends on a lot of factors, including but not limited to: size of the world, number of civs, various site/pop caps, how habitable the various civs find the world to be, number of beasts of various types, random chance, and of course what sorts of things you find interesting.
I recently generated a pocket world with lots of beasts and a 30 year history, thinking that'd give it just a little chance to get a little bit interesting without too much death, only to find the dwarven civilization got wiped out in year 26.

>There is no native interface
v p l is the native labor management interface, and it works fine. If you're too lazy or inattentive to use it that's your problem.
>>155478598
>you'd have to micro the labors for each and every dorf separately. Nobody is stupid enough to do that
Welp, looks like I was wrong on that. Sorry man.
>>155478598
Will you continue using v-p-l after toady implements functionality similar to dfhack labors ui? You should know it's coming.
>>155478864
It's fast and easy with the native interface if you've bothered to familiarize yourself with your dwarves at all. If you catch your migrants as they enter the map you can tweak their labors then, and in most cases never have to touch them again. The only time using the rapist or manipulator is warranted is for major labor reassignments, like if you suddenly find yourself in need of 40 architects or something. Even then you can accomplish the same thing without either in 2 or 3 minutes if you aren't completely incompetent.
I can't wait for the next update. Will I be able to join NPC adventuring parties and go on adventures with them?
Why are reanimated rocs so retarded? They just fly up in the air and don't move if there isn't a enemy in sight.
>>155479515
Toady has said repeatedly that UI work isn't even on his radar until DF is approaching feature-complete. You're talking about something years, over a decade probably, in the future. Even then, I would bet every urist in my bank account that the final product isn't a spreadsheet. It probably won't be anything like v p l either, as the labor system is likely to be completely revamped before then.

>>155479758
Finally we're getting somewhere. At least you understand that therapist/manipulator are better for migrant waves and major labor reassignments.

>>155480493
not him, but while I find manipulator useful(because fuck therapist. manipulator has all the important functions of therapist, and is better implemented into the ui) when it's available, I don't really have any problems with using the vanilla vpl
why?
simply because I'm not aspie who gets triggered from having a few idlers. let them them idle all they want, as long as my prouction goes on smoothly. if I notice that an industry is understaff, I just quickly go back the meeting area and vpl the required labour onto some random idlers. it always works
I always wanted to learn how to play DF, but the drinkin and smoking doesn't help the insomnia.
Might try and pick up the game later down the line tho.
>open up my first cavern
>its completely flooded

what do i do now?
>>155480493
I didn't say that they were better for migrant waves. They're certainly not. If a migrant wave is large enough that they could save time or effort, then by the time the wave has finished arriving many of the dwarves will have lost their new arrival status, which often means they'll already be performing labors you would otherwise have unassigned. Best to v p l them as they enter the map.
I haven't derided them, either. I told anon that he was wrong that a new player would outgrow the need for labor management utilities if he started with them. The evidence suggests otherwise.
>>155480868
You're right, I'm uncomfortable with nonsense. Your question made incorrect assumptions, and answering yes or no to it would require the validation of those incorrect assumptions. If you don't understand, reread my response until you do.

I'm mostly on the same boat with you. I dropped therapist in favor of manipulator back when it was first released as dfhack labors. I also don't mind idlers, they are an inevitable consequence of a successful fort.
But using v-p-l is a waste of time I'd rather not suffer in a mature fort. It's like playing adventurer without macros.

You can't seriously think that manually navigating to each dorf, hitting v and then browsing the multi-tiered labor list is anything but awful UI design compared to a simple table with all dorfs and labors.
So again, why are you against better UX? Are you just that autistic? Or a vanilla purist? Help us understand your problems, anon.
>I'm uncomfortable with nonsense.

I actually managed to get kobold'd.

You don't have to navigate to each dwarf. They all enter the map in the same spot. A few keystrokes per dwarf is all it takes.

You didn't ask that question. And I'm not. I can play that game too, watch:

>>155483969
They always send 1-3 thieves regardless of the success or failure of previous thievery attempts. They don't associate with goblins either, any incidents where they arrive together are purely coincidental.
They don't siege, but they will send ambushes after enough successful thievery attempts.

That only applies to migrant waves, not in other labor change situations. Just look at yourself defending bad UX and attempting to downplay the problem. Those extra keystrokes are completely unnecessary and it takes more than in most cases.
I changed the question becauseyour answer to the last one was a low quality bait and you know it. Not that this one was much better, but you deserve an explanation.
You seem to grasp the fact that therapist/manipulator are superior, yet you keep posting in favor of vanilla's lack of labor management and attempt to downplay its faults. Why do you keep doing it? Are you just that autistic? Or a vanilla purist? Something else? Don't answer here, but seriously consider those questions. We don't need the answer - you do. I'm trying to help you understand and break out of your cognitive dissonance. (I'm still assuming you are serious and won't pull the just-pretending-to-be-retarded card anytime soon.)

Not him, but to be fair I've seen people in /dfg/ say that updates make it impossible for them to play fortress mode until the rapist gets updated, which isn't an issue if you learn how to use the vanilla system. You obviously want to argue with someone who thinks the rapist and manipulator are bad. You want to have that argument so much that you're willing to pretend that I've taken that position. But instead I'll keep making the arguments that I began with.
New players should learn the native interface. Those who start with a labor management utility risk being one of the many players left waiting for updates to utilities that are frequently out of date. Many players in this thread right now have heen playing an old version of DF for months waiting for the rapist or dfhack to catch up with the current version. Many others aren't playing at all, just popping in twice a week to ask if the rapist is updated yet, complaining a bit, and then fucking off to whatever other generals they shit up while waiting to be able to play DF again. They, like you, have bought into the meme that the native interface is too hard to use, despite the fact that that thousands of players have been using it since DF released. It is simply the fact of the matter that changing labors with the native interface is fast and easy for anyone who has bothered to learn it. It isn't as fast or efficient as a 3rd party utility, and I never claimed otherwise. It is, however, available all of the time in every single release that DF has ever had, and that isn't changing in the forseeable future. The rapist and manipulator, on the other hand, have been either out of date or unavailable for the majority of both of the last two major release cycles, and didn't exist at all for most of the release cycle before that.
So, you can pretend this is about whatever personality flaws or neuroses you'd like to imagine, but I rather suspect that you're just lashing out at a bogeyman to protect your ego against the implication that you're a lesser player because you can't cut it without a labor manager.
>>155490905

Chests will be added but I was waiting on the construction of the other items first.
Room layout was taken from this:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/images/9/97/Hactar1_Mandelbrot_Tree.png
and done purely because I liked the design. Beds are where I want them all furniture along the back wall.
They will not have to walk through other workshops once the stockpiles are reorganized and additional stairs added. This will also eliminate transit time for materials.
That big room is currently undecided.
>>155494085
My only problem with that layout is that I would have to go around and toggle each door as internal > expand the room to maximum size > toggle the door to external > move to the next room.
Might be the other way on the external/internal toggle, but you get the idea, giving a max size bedroom with a private cabinet so you don't get endless sock shuffling from every overlapping bedroom owner into every cabinet.

This is what I do. Reassign labors as they file onto the map, change the profession names of any useless dwarf to make notes of who's useless and could be reassigned a specific role later, and usually not need to bother changing labors for most migrants beyond that.
No rapist required. But then again I don't play with more than ~100 dwarves in a fort at a time. Rapist is useful for huge-ass forts.

Okay, quick geology lesson:
'Cleavage', when referring to minerals, relates to the mineral's tendency to break along defined lines, based on how the mineral's atoms form together. Most minerals have some kind of cleavage, but corundum is an exception.
Awesome, means they're harder to break, right? Well...
There's also an idea called 'tenacity', which is how a mineral reacts to being hammered.Corundum is quite brittle, AKA, it breaks into a powder. In other words, blunt weapons are a no go. This also means that, unless you get a /perfect/ hit every time you use an edged corundum weapon, it's going to break apart.
I don't know if our local Toad has made this a thing in-game, but that's the real-life explanation, anyways.

Undefined. Its raws simply don't define the required parameters. I doubt any gem raws do. They probably inherit some default values from stone template, but I'm too lazy to check what those would be.
>>155527769
Easier with flimsy ones but it happens when you whack stuff too.
>>155528312
I think weapons only gets damaged when they hit equal or superior material. So if you have steel weapons, pretty much nothing in the game can damage them. Iron weapons on the other hand seem fairly easy to damage by whacking steel-clad dorfs or by parrying blows of iron weapons.
>>155528597
Yeah, though the strength of the user matters too for both parts of the calculation. The stone axes you can make for felling trees are one-hit quitters no matter what though, which is what you would expect if you tried to use most gemstones for a weapon, for the earlier discussion.

Whats the purpose of coffers/chests in rooms of regular dorfs? I tried it once in couple of bedrooms, never seen anyone using it for storage.
Also, how to deal with worn clothes filling cabinets? It dont look like i can sell it to caravans.

World generation fortresses are a bit more navigable now (managed to get to the surface from a deep site without a surface connection a few times), though there is always more to do there. Some of the apparently disconnected forts just has really bizarre ways to the main staircase -- having to go from the wide hallway to a side hallway, through a door, down a side hallway, through a stockpile, through a door, around a corner, and back to a wide hallway which connects to the main stairwell. Now it tries to ensure that the wide hallways are connected from end to end, which is practically enough. It would still be better to have some engravings and the ability to ask directions.
I've also gotten about halfway through the artifact storage locations for the various site types and situations.
So, no more clusterfuck worldgen dwarf forts that make starting as dorf adventurer a fucking pain. Hooray.

Think we were getting ready to have a big lasagna and salad and whatnot meal, but they got these big italian bread things like you might get in a restaurant, and they didn't know how to cook them right.
So the end result was the crust being really hard and the inside was kinda mushy, we were trying to figure out how to salvage it when stonerdude mutters "it's like eating a turtle" before chomping down on it.

If you want to have tons of entirely unrelated features all jammed together in a single mod with no concern for coherence or game balance or intentional design, then give it a shot. Be advised that the resulting product only superficially resembles dwarf fortress.
I personally disliked it, but I think you should come to that conclusion yourself instead of just believing the memeswhich are entirely accurate.

Does anyone else do multi z-level entrances and interiors? I think it really adds something to a fort.
>>155566898
When I dig out central pathways and halls, I usually ramp instead of digging. Sometimes, I give the side rooms second floors and windows overlooking the path outside. It looks kinda neat sometimes.
The pic is from oe of my more ambitious projects. Here the main pathway is divided into several floors, each of which consisting of two z-levels.

You ought to make "anchors", like a big finished goods stockpile at one end and a "food court" at the other.

>tfw you get elected as mayor of the fort
>tfw all the other dwarfs shove you down the miasma feels tunnels
>>155570585
Looking at that image macro, it probably was a tard rather than ESL.
More often than not, ESLs learn the language through grammatical rules and writing, unlike native speakers who learn the spoken language as a baby. Therefore ESLs are not as prone to errors in writing stemming from the oddities of english pronunciation (like fills->feels) as natives are. In fact, making such mistakes even deliberately can be hard for ESLs who do not have a native-level grasp the oddball pronunciation rules.
Whatever the case was, don't feel bad. Tards gonna tard no matter what their native language is.

That's how procedurally generated stuff works.
Each version of the generator will result in completely different worlds.
>>155566898

>>155574691
man, I hope that when all the mechanics to created vastly different worlds and stories are fleshed out (psychology, mythology, etc.) Toady adds more abilities/sliders to create the world and history you want
>>155574890
That gave me weird flashbacks from all the vaults I've been raiding.
>>155574691
I think I know DF's map generation better than you do. Note that I'm not talking about the entire world generation process, just the physical map layout.
Toady could easily keep the generation algorithms for biome, elevation, rainfall, temperature, drainage, volcanism and savagery maps identical between major releases. They haven't notably changed in ages.
>>155576023
yeah, change what works badly, otherwise leave it like that
>>155576023
It doesn't make sense that Toady would arbitrarily change the way the worlds generate, much less that he would do so without ever mentioning it in a changelog. The procedural algorithms probably reference some unrelated values in the game's code that change from version to version. Memory addresses, for example.
