Finally! After spending two real-life days in caverns, I got out! I had to make my way to the closest dwarf settlement/tunnel, which was half a map away.

Things that came to pass while I was desperately trying to find my way out:
- Met a batman tribe. They were mostly eaten by a giant cave spider.
- Cut the GCS in half while it was busy eating batman.
- Tried to build an emergency stairway site. It didn't work.
- Kept my sanity (needs) in check by arguing with gorlaks after punching them.
- Killed another giant cave spider by throwing food at it.
- Made my way under a hillock. Tried to retire. Couldn't.
- Slaughtered 6 blind cave ogres.
- Tried various methods of extreme woodcutting in a vain attempt to teleport to surface.
- Got about 600 unnotable kills. Mostly crundles. Fucking crundles.
- Became a legendary striker by punching crundles.
- Went under a halmet. Tried to retire. Couldn't.
- Went under a town. Tried to retire. Couldn't.
- Met a tribe of antmen. They weren't friendly either.
- Tried climbing out god knows how many times and am still a "dabbling" climber.
- Lost one of my spare weapons. Probably threw it at a crundle. Whatever.

How do I get dwarves to do the jobs I assign instead of just milling around aimlessly?
What jobs do I give my dwarves when I can't figure out what jobs to give them?
Is it OK to have a handful of idle dwarves or are you supposed to make sure every dwarf is doing a job?

Make a trade depot from the build menu, have a dwarf with the appraisal ability, move some of your goods to the depot, and have the appraiser go and trade.

That's a very complicated question. A basic explanation would be to assign specific dwarves to specific tasks, and only those tasks.

Whatever you may need. If you don't need anything, making them members of the military, or finding ways to severely injure them so that the medical dwarves don't get rusty is a good option.

That's just what happens when the site is mostly populated with a certain race. Happens all the time with dark pits turning into human pits after being conquered and such. I think it doesn't even need to be forcefully conquered.

So im following the great wiki guide given to our fort through the great scroll. In my deciphering I've made it to the part where I have set up a forge for my people and we need to look for iron. So we are trying to find iron underground but our fort keeps getting migrants.

It is near impossible for a young novice lord like myself to manage this many people, we are close to 55 in numbers and these people can't find work here. I'm trying my best to manage this many people but I fear the fort may come tumbling down. We have food but I don't know where to even begin with their moods and needs while we hope to survive long enough to make it through the guide.

Everything seems to be working out so far even though the fort has over half the population without work (idle). Our hunters won't hunt, we don't have livestock to breed, and we only have 2 (female) cats.

So I've come to you once again great scroll, please guide me to victory in leading my people.

Grow some shrooms. You embarked with plump helmets, right? With all those extra farmers begging for work you should be swimming in masterfully cooked plump helmet recipes and finely aged dwarven wines by the time the caravan comes and you buy all their meat, fish, animals and seeds.

Do you have every kind of work possible in your fort?
Gems Cut and engraved?
Are there fish to catch/clean?
Cooking and brewing?
Butchering?
Have you got someone making crafts out of the bones of the dead stuff?
Do you have all the plants outside gathered?
Do you have areas for your dwarves to pray at?
Do you have anyone that can make bolts (preferably wood and bone bolts)?
Are bedrooms and important areas engraved?
Are there excessive amounts of rocks everywhere? Make a 1 tile dump and order all the rocks to be dumped. Be sure to reclaim them when they've been hauled.

There's plenty to do. Even with 100+ dwarves, it's not too bad to have less than 10 idlers.

I meant encrust, my bad. As in, encrusting them on other things. Use the gem cutter's workshop.
Bone crafts are in the craftsdwarf's workshop by a bone carver.
