An Aliens conversion would be baller. You'd go around answering distress calls and and it would mostly be minor stuff (rebels or something), but when xenos turn up it would be a pants shitting experience. The concealment mechanic could be turned against you instead and they would sneak around and pick you off one by one.

for me the dream is a Mass effect mod, remaking the three games in tactical format with some fire emblem elements for squad interaction, also some new characters to fill out the roster because anyone can still die, you can bring Shepard into the battle but at great risk of an instant game over, smart commanders spend more time commanding then shooting themselves

Whatever we get in the expansion, I'll bet it's going to have something to do with Shen down in engineering. Both of the DLC packs filled in areas on the Avenger originally filled with random crates and webbing, and the last of those bits is down near the rear ramp, just to the right of where your SPARKs are repaired.

Err... Anyway, I like the idea of air bases around the map. It's a callback of the previous XCOM games and they would represent your level of control in a zone as they could help defend not only from UFOs but from retaliation strikes as well.

I think the reason why you don't see blasters is mostly because 90% of the cosmetic mods for XCOM2 are ports, with the remaining ten percent split between kitbashing existing assets and actual original texture/model work.

So it's only that small percentage that would even have an idea of what they can do to make custom projectiles. Most of the existing T2/T3 replacements that actually stick to theme (IE, railguns and energy weapons) either use X2's effects or modify them slightly (the Mercenary weapons use a yellow beam and have electricity crackle across the weapon as it charges the shot)

The only mod I can think of with actually new effects is, to little surprise, the LW Team's laser pack.

Newfag here. Is it possible in Xcom 2 to do the first mission with random rookies and have your character pool soldiers ready for recruitment or already recruited when you're back on the ship? Or is it possible to use the charpool soldiers in the first mission and force them to be promoted into a special class? Promotion seems to work randomly.

I'd recommend it. Shinobi, the LW class, plus the SpecOp knife is almost broken. Almost because I don't think you can reliably kill things like MECs, Andros, etc. with the knife, only ADVENT troops.

But my top scout has about 50 skills despite rarely ever going loud, and Shinobi can take Serial so if you do get revealed by something you can just make them regret ever making you use a gun.

Plus you can take an SMG for obscene mobility, which will increase the damage of "Fleche" (LW's slash, it gives +1 damage for every three tiles of movement between you and your victim - how I get this DIS-GUSTING crit) and let you just get a free +3 damage on any flanking shot thanks to Hunter's Instincts, which more or less nullifies the damage loss from lolSMG.

Alright, on open maps it's less about your position, because until you get all sorts of options (high end snipers, abilities on units, long distance grenade throwing, smoke+suppression over open ground cheese) it's going to be impossible for you to advance safely over open ground. Even if you have a good setup, if you make contact from hard cover across a clearing to aliens in hard cover, you will lose the ensuing firefight. Break line of sight, fall back, and entice them into advancing across the clearing. You can have someone edge up to and back down from a corner each turn to check their progress. If that doesn't work out, thank Jake you're not on time limited missions yet, and being overwatch creeping around the clearing to secure a better avenue of approach. Some maps, like the shipyards for example, though, you're basically fucked unless you brought options (flashbangs, smoke, grenades) to deal with an open firefight. Just be careful not to exhaust all of your fighting potential on one pod, and be even more careful not to activate more while trying to maneuver. There's a really good instance of this earlier on in Beagu's Live and Impossible S2 where he gets into a firefight on the shipping warehouse map and explains how, given the narrow nature of the area, you sometimes have no choice but to bog down, hunker your front, and try to make safe moves into flanking positions or places the enemy can't see.

Those tips are pretty good. You know about the congo line right? Move one guy up with a blue move (hopefully to full cover). If he doesn't activate anything, then everyone can move up directly behind him in a line. Using this properly will mean that you always activated pods on your first move instead of later ones, giving you a better chance to respond.

The Laser Weapons do have recolored assets, but they modify them a bit and they play around with the code so it fires near instantly.

Heya, glad to hear that everything is going more or less smoothly. Long War will do that to you. Don't be too afraid of losing countries because you can always take them back later, as long as you manage to hold on to what you've got. Long War Impossible can be kind of fickle about what you're 'allowed' to do in the strategic game, because the air game is straight fucked and a lot of suboptimal progression will see you getting outpaced by alien research. Hell, I forget if JL got so turbomad over people doing early landed larges if you can safely pass them up anymore. Anyway, you want to focus on satellites. If you can only do one thing, do satellites. Lock your continent down, and pray to RNG that the aliens didn't pick your continent to start on otherwise you may have to settle for another one's bonus. Weaponry is important but ultimately secondary because you can do a lot with ballistic weapons and veteran troops. Abuse shotguns, take HEAT ammo where you can, hell, start subbing in battle rifles if you gotta. A lot of players do what's called a Gauss rush where you completely ignore laser weaponry and hold out until Gauss weapons become available to you, so have confidence in your ability to make it with basic armaments. Beam lasers are still pretty useful because they confer an aim bonus on Long War, though.

And you can lasers to your blueshirts in base defense missions, but not Gauss iirc.

Addendum to this, to explain some hidden but important mechanics of Long War. "Lost" nations you should consider to be merely occupied by the aliens. You can drive them out by conducting a base assault there. This also means that territory is serving to produce resources for the aliens. It might be confirmation bias on my part, but they tend to target nations neighboring the one that they 'start' in (you'll notice a country leave the council randomly in the first month or so), and lock down continents the same way the player does. You can gauge alien resource level by the kinds of troops they deploy, and more reliably by the amount of meld you're getting per canister. You start seeing like 15 or 16 meld and then it drops to 9 or 8, get your ass ready because the aliens just spent a ton of cash on something. You'll know you're kicking their ass when you see 3-4 meld per canister and they're running eco rounds of nothing but Sectoids in August.

With four bases active in your own campaign, the aliens are likely pretty comfy, and you can expect to be dealing with a few more terror missions than normal, but it's nothing to be too worried about.

Selling sweet, sweet Meld can get you through a lot of stuff but there's also some VERY high cost alloy/fragment/meld upgrades in the late game so you want to be very careful how much of your stock you liquidate. Also, try to fulfill council requests. They're practically worthless in the base game, but in LW they can net you tons of cash and serve as your primary source of engineers.

It's not that simple. XCOM 2 barely released in what would be considered an acceptable state after already being delayed for three months. Some people didn't even consider the performance and bugs acceptable on release. X-COM is gameplay first, and the fans expect strong gameplay, so anything less would be way worse then having a "bad" story. You put time and money into writing a good story, that's gonna effect the development of the rest of the game. Games are about making something fun and enjoyable, but they are also still a product that needs to result in a profit. All I'm saying is that it's very difficult to do it all and it's not as simple as just "hiring good writers."

Also XCOM has always had strong themes of writing your own story through the gameplay and the soldiers in your campaign. It's about what happens to them, who makes it, who's the mvp, who struggles by, who drops the ball.

You start to focus the game more heavily on a set story, and you start to lose this element of XCOM people really enjoy.

Scariest guy I ever met had one of those. When I was on deployment in Afghanistan as part of a MEDEVAC crew, we had an attache one day for reasons the higher ups wouldn't give.

Yep. Whenever an enemy goes down, the soldier who dealt the killing blow gets a kill and all other soldiers on the mission get a "half kill". So the one with 90 scratches did a lot of murdering with her own hands, while the one with 40 was simply around to see a lot of murder happen, because the game only displays actual kills.

There is one mod that adds a couple of female faces, but it adds them in as props, which means you need to remove the soldier's actual face and then use the new face like a mask. So I don't use that mod myself.

The final mission mentions that as the Ethereal's psionic network fails, some of the aliens start throwing down their weapons or attacking each other. So it wouldn't surprise me if at least some of them are capable of independent thought and need to be killed, imprisoned, or integrated into society.

As for the ADVENT clones, you see them fighting even after the Ethereals are dead. I always had the impression that they weren't really fully sapient, and required direct oversight from their Captains, or the Ethereals themselves, to carry out anymore more complex than their routine duties. Actually you have it that the complete other way around. Pretty sure if anyone is fried, it's the aliens, and the ADVENT seem capable of independent thought. In dialogue during the final mission they talk about ADVENT forces descending into chaos. Some of them start fighting each other and others actually surrender. Since the ethereals controlled all the aliens originally without the psionic network, and all the ADVENT troopers were always hooked up to the network, it would make the most sense that they were the ones who start to surrender once the network goes down. Also the ending cutscene clearly shows ADVENT troops still fine and dandy, but they actually surrender in the face of certain defeat (certainly something that hasn't happened or been noted to happen before).

As someone else noted, this would also be consistent with borrowing inspiration from the previous X-COM games as the hybrids in x-com apocalypse were part human and part sectoid, which is what the current hybrids look like physically as well. Also always has been a "humanity fuck yeah" narrative, which this also fits into.

The aliens are most likely to fizzle out or go completely feral.

Wow I really managed to screw with this campaign in bizarre ways. First I accidentally loaded my save file when I was running a complete conversion mod. I was poor when EU and EW came out and same with Long War but I have easily put in 700 hours, been playing nonstop since Long War began it's beta and of course the 60ish hours from EU+EW.

I finally sold my car for a massive profit and got out of debt then bought EU and EW for the full retail price of $100 AU. 198 hours in XCOM2 currently. Glad to be able to afford to actually buy games now.

Well, different strokes and all that. Admittedly it is a lot more complex, and drones and grenade damage reduction in the first month and the airgame throughout gets really annoying (unless you take steps - there is a rebalance mod of the mod, but I haven't tested it myself), but I really enjoyed it, especially as it got closer to 1.0. Worth a try at least, and please do try to get past the annoyance of DR at first!

The marksmen scope is weird because you first have to justify using the marksmen weapons in the first place.
I know I want my snipers using sniper rifles, and I strongly prefer my scouts using rifles or shotguns.
The bonus aim would be interesting as it would mean your scouts would actually be mobile pseudo snipers. Probably keep the mobility penalty if aim was added.

Of all of these the most important ones are ABA and its addons. With it the AI becomes aggressive and unpredictable. Dynamic difficulty ensures the game won't become trivial even after you obtain a looted, modded bowcaster that reloads itself.
I also avoid voice packs and other annoyance like the plague. Someone who's installed a lot of them will know there's this point (usually during avenger defense) where you just have to let Deadpool die.

My theory for her return: Integrating her in the actual base lab with Tygan would be a lot of work for little obvious pay-off. They could potentially add a new base facility for her to work in, but what I'd like to see is this: She is running a hidden facility somewhere out in bumfuck nowhere, perhaps we help her set it up in a mission or two. This facility is a permanent location on the Geoscape, and we can actually fly over there to drop soldiers off for gene-modding.

once you research the brain there's an item you can build in the engineering bay. it's under the armor tab. i've never seen this before. it's either new or in my 200 hours in xcom2 i've missed it.

I haven't been able to do much of anything these days, i had some problems with the sdk(that i already fixed, i think) and i was trying to make the "T3.5" mod with the merc plasma weapons, but i don't know much(anything) about coding so it involves a lot of trial and error.
