Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Just jumping in here to ask, isn't high population GREAT for bloodhunting?
>>
>>155063267
You don't get any extra blood slaves over 7000 pop and you lose a proportional amount of gold based on the unrest you cause, even if you patrol it down that turn. A blood slave costs more gold at 20,000 than it does at 7000.

An assassin needs both stealth and the assassin trait.

You can also use seduction as a ghetto assassination, because a failed seduction attempt sometimes results in an assassination attempt.

Pan with 15k pop in their cap instead of 30k, Pan without 3000 crazy sluts, Pan without blood, and Pan without EQ spammers. So yea its totally the same as pan, if by pan you mean centaurs that are good with a W bless
>>
>>155089794

Yes, but you still want them to have at least W9 for those black centaurs. Magic scales would be fantastic on them as well, owing to their lack of good lab rats.
>>
>>155089794
They lack the best unit, the Reveler (which reduces the value of nature buffs). Nature isn't a good crosspath for death and Panic Apostates are very price-y for D2s (compare Panic Apostates to a mage like Marshmaster, they're strictly inferior their durability aside). I think Earth is a generally more desirable path than Death (especially if you have troops that synergize well with buffs) and Pangaea also has a degree of blood access for endgame. Asphodel doesn't have seducer-assassins

Asphodel disciple is fine, arguably better than Asphodel with popkill and freespawn (since you can still reanimate lots of freespawn carrion with priests), but I'd say it's a good bit weaker than MA Pangaea (unless you want death access for your team or something).
>>
>>155090198

Don't forget they also miss out on Dryad Seducers/ass-ass-ins and (for whatever its worth) the "song-spells"

They do gain skelespammers, holy 3 priest summons and reanimators with national divine undead buffs.

>>

With an S2 Master:
64 Slaves with no booster
32 Slaves with one booster (Skullcap)
16 Slaves with two boosters (Coin)
8 Slaves with two boosters + Light of the Northern Star
4 Slaves with two boosters + Light of the Northern Star/Banner of the Northen Star + Power of the Spheres/Crystal Shield
2 Slaves with three boosters (Cap, Coin, Ring) + Light of the Northern Star/Banner of the Northern Star + Power of the Spheres/Crystal Shield
Out of the box with with four boosters (Cap, Coin, Ring, artifact) + Light of the Northern Star/Banner of the Northen Star + Power of the Spheres/Crystal Shield

Imagine that extra magic levels reduce the number of gems required to cast spells, rather than reducing fatigue.

A spell which costs no gems to cast has the usual fatigue reduction.

What spells are really good now?

To keep the thread alive here's some creativity exercises.

How would you make a game based on the Dominions universe for the following genres:
-Horror
-First Person game
-Action Third Person game
-MMO
>>
>>155099620

It's a survival game where you're a peasant trying to survive in the middle of the war, trying not to get eaten by jews and hiding from all the horrifying globals.

>>155099620
>Horror
Caves of Xibalba. Shitty indie walking simulator game with a ton of jump scares.

>First Person.
A world where Ermor/Lemuria wins. All cancerous globals are in place, and you are the last living priest of your pretender who must carry the flame of your faith in dark times. Something like Dark Souls gameplay would suit perfectly, but in first person for more immersion.

>Action Third Person
Pretender Onslaught Ultra X, an arcade/fighting game with a shitton of available pretenders. Seruously, Blood Fountain's zoning is fucking unbearable, and Kraken's normals should deal 20% at most. Illfraaaaaaaauud!

>MMO
Taint and Trade. Basically, Illwinter's first idea of CoE. You're a trader who travels the world buying and selling shit, encountering monsters and other characters. Tactical battles, persistent world, PvP, PvE, and global events like Horror attacks.
>>

>>
>>155100327

>>
>>155099620
>-Horror
Try to survive as a regular peasant in LA Ulm while LA R'lyeh is invading them.

>-First Person game
Basically just Dark Messiah, except in the Dominions world.

>-Action Third Person game
Dork Souls, set in MA Ermor.

>-MMO
The life of Bogus. Everyone is an indie adventurer and messes with pretenders by freeing their slaves and raiding their provinces. When you level up enough the pretenders start to notice your bullshit and start sending armies, thugs and SCs after you.

Your pretender had F9N9 bless and you have recuperation, so you're among the only ones who can regenerate his wounds and old age while fighting off ethereal undead. Ending consists of your waifu/best friend using her/his lifeforce to overcast Purgatory and replace Utterdark. Sequel deals with awakening of blood magic.

>>155111814

It's somewhat variable by path. You're effectively trading gems for faster site finding and less mage turns consumed.

A D1 Revenant casting Dark Knowledge will find 100% of D sites in one province per turn.

A D4F1 Sauromancer sitesearching will find 100% of D sites in one province per two turns. (He'll also find about 60% of Fire sites)

There's also variation based on site settings. In Magika, which has site-frequency maxed, it is ABSOLUTELY worth sitesearch ritual spamming, because there are a lot of sites and a site which you have not found yet is one which is not giving you gems. In a standard setting LA game, they're less worthwhile.
>>
where's the all nations 1 age mod?
>>
>>155119942

So EA has more sites than LA?

Is it the map that sets frequency? Or the host? Because I'm not seeing any such info on games pending on llamaserver.
>>
>>155119942
>In a standard setting LA game, they're less worthwhile.
However, it's worth noting there are exceptions for this. Some provinces have more sites (thrones have a higher likelihood and a map can have provinces that are more likely to have sites or even guaranteed site of a certain type, you can check those in map editor). In addition, some sites can be betrayed by their effects on scales or unrest (when no dominion has touched the province yet, or by finding out a province has G0 in G3 dominion despite having been in your possession for a long time). For example, if an untouched province has order scales, you can tell it has The Cornerstone or The Statue of the Sitting God sites (as those level 0 sites are revealed by default and The Statues of the Overlords is ruled out because it would also increase productivity).

If you have a reason to believe there's a site in the province, it's well worth investing in site search spells.
>>
>>155119725
No.

If you want to buff your mages, use Wind Guide instead so you can have one guy buffing everyone at once. It's the same buff as Aim anyway.
>>
>>155120563
It's shown in "Game Settings and Admin Options" if site frequency has been changed from default. Example: http://www.llamaserver.net/pretAdmin.cgi?game=GrandestMemery

By default, EA has more sites than MA which has more sites than LA.
>>
>>155120563

Default settings are EA 45, MA 40, LA 35.

This can be overridden by the host in the game settings. Mostly it's just left as is.
>>
>>155120958

75, does that mean 75% higher frequency, or some other arbitrary number?
>>
>>155121026
To my understanding (I'm not 100% on that) it means 75% of provinces have at least one site. Remember that provinces can have more sites than one, however, so in actuality 75 site frequency means an average province has more than one site.
>>
>>155121026

I'm not sure anyone's ever worked out how exactly site frequency works, beyond "Bigger is more".

Protecting a key mage researching/casting rituals in your capital from assassins? Maybe if you're down to your capital with a lot of mages but no blockers, and you only have gold for a couple of troops but resources for plenty? Maybe for your first expansion party with your prophet if you for whatever amazing reason unrelated to sacreds have decided to take high paths on your pretender?

I don't know, just maybe you could come up with a plausible reason but in any event they'd be so niche it doesn't matter, realistically they're never worth it.

None. You will never have enough resources to recruit them in EA, and you will never have a bless that works with them. MAYBE if you for some reason went with a E9 pretender, although you would never do that because you're going to have an awake expander as Caelum or die horribly.

Your infantry is trash, but that's not what your nation is about. If you want heavy infantry find an indie province with them that has decent resources, build a fort and pop them out. They serve as good roadblocks, if you can ever get them to end up where your flying armies will go.

What? Ever since they got charge bonus for lances ages ago, Caelum has been one of the premier nations in expansion. Now, because people don't want to face their Thunder Strike battery power spike, someone might conceivably try to rush them immediately (during the first year) but I haven't seen such a thing happen and for a good reason: it's a suicide (even if Caelum can't win in a pitched battle, they'll just swallow your entire territory and should you manage to defend your own capital and keep Caelum sieged, you'll be so far set back you've effectively lost the game).
>>
>>155129053

Since I've only ever really played with AI, around what season/year would you say people mostly hit their mid and late game options? With graphs turned on, in a game I'm doing well, I usually feel like I'm way ahead of the AI in terms of research but generally behind on number of troops.

AI recruits a lot of random shit, so it doesn't indicate anything.

Midgame usually starts when you research your endgame spells and are ready to use them in combat. For D2+ nations it's usually skelespam followed by shadowblast. For A2+ nations it's storm/storm power/thunderstrike. I'd say mid-game is anything that follows after the initial expansion phase. Considering a standard province number of 15-18 provinces per player, I'd say midgame starts around the end of year 2 - start of year 3.

>>
>>155149383
It depends. The AI can't into magic but recruits all the troops, so your impression is accurate. But for real players, you gotta take the nation they represent into account, and their situation on the map, thus understanding that those mid or late game options can come online at various times. So it depends. But as >>155149918
says, you can expect anyone who unlocked his magical options of choice to consider himself in midgame. Endgame is about getting the big boy summons and battlefield devastating spells, or late, costly globals for example.

>>
>>155179618
When in doubt, ask your players what settings they'd like. They'll usually start complaining if they think your settings are dumb.

Number of thrones doesn't matter too much, but I wouldn't go above a tenth of provinces as thrones.

Generally you want a bit over half of total throne points to win, but you can use a larger percentage for a longer game and a smaller percentage for a shorter one.

Try to avoid having lots of thrones of the same level. I personally try to have at least 3x as many level 1+2 as level 3, and at least as many level 2 as level 1.

But even when I try not to spread cancer or cast cancerous globals people rush or gang up or gang rush me into oblivion. The only time I've had success is spreading cancer as hard as I can and casting life ruining globals as fast as I can so that my territory and much of the surrounding territory is already lifeless and they can't siege me effectively by the time they attack. That allows me to survive well into the game and take advantage of the chaos when their alliance inevitably falls apart.

If it doesn't have an investigate command (or anything else) just leave them in the province. If you press "i" you should be able to learn the past events in a province, and can look that up on the dom4 inspector.

some events don't need you to do anything beyond having the appropriate commander in the province.

Templer Flesh and Liquid Body stack. Most buffs stack unless they're the same effect.
>>
>>155196582
What spells?
>>
>>155201031
Temper Flesh gives the effects Fire Resistance, Slashing Resistance, Piercing Resistance, and Bludgeoning Resistance.

Liquid Body gives the effects Slashing Resistance, Piercing Resistance, Bludgeoning Resistance, and Liquid Body (reduces strength, reduces chance of afflictions, reduces movement speed).

You can't have two of the same effect, so you only get any additional effects which the other spell didn't have. In this case, either Fire Resistance or Liquid Body.

For Formoria, cast Storm with a formorian king, then get all your druids to cast summon stormpower > thunderstrike x 4, have one guy cast wind guide for more precision. Thunderstrike batteries will kill a lot of things pretty hard, certainly anything the AI can throw at you as long as you have enough thunderstrikers. You can also >>155211597 with nemedian sorcesses, although they can do lots of other things too.
Aside from that, Fog warriors and dance of the morrigans are your big battle winners, but you can also do things like combo stygian rains with nemedian warriors (or if you're fighting mostly undead since stygian rains doesn't affect them), since they have magic weapons and will ignore the invulnerability it gives to everyone.

Two shields. All a regular thug needs for a weapon is a brand, anyway.

>>
>>155212945
It depends. Do you want him to be a thug or anti-thug? You can give him a shield and a gate cleaver for AN damage, for example. Or a shield, sword of quickness, and dusk dagger. For PD killing purposes vine shield and a shield that increases his protection a lot can be great, depending on his bless.

Earth buffs are best buffs. Buffing sequence:

Blessing (depending on your bless; if it's at least E4 or even N9)
Iron Skin (optional; if not fighting against air nation or if you don't have Iron Face)
Temper Flesh
Personal Regeneration (Strength of Gaia gives barksking which allows people to kill you with 2 solid fire brand hits)
Mistform (if against typical PD without mage support; useless against anti-thugs and mages)

Flight then attack rear OR attack large enemy monsters to kill commanders or thugs.

Make 10 SP games. Then make a thug with awe shield and a brand. Then go and attack 10 barbarian provinces in each game. Then count how many cases had your thug dead. I'll guarantee you, it's gonna be about 50%.

>>155214701
Charcoal shield gives you good protection (and shield protection STACKS), some fire resist, and fire shield. If you already have good prot, chances are your attackers will burn.

Weightless kite shield is all around great in combination with other shields. Straight away prot/parry increase without downsides.

Shield of valor can catch arrows and evos.

Lantern shield gives fear and some harassment from banefire candles.

Scutata whatever it's called autocasts and gives resist shock.

Don't get me wrong, I'd use awe shield if I wouldn't have any other options, it's just that other options are better for both thugging and anti-thugging.

MAGE SUPP-

Oh.
>>
>>155099620
>-Horror
>-Action Third Person game
Gonna combine these two. You play as a brown-haired white man from... Let's say EA Ermor. You're going about your legion business, that's the prologue. Then you see a dryad who seduces you, leading you through woodland adventures before you finally get to fuck her. Then night falls, the two of you coiled in post coital bliss. Cutscene shows something huge, and you awaken under ground. Stealth around and fight pale ones for a while, learn their magics, then escape only to reach Xibalba. After some misunderstandings, an ancient (not ageless) Olm becomes your buddy and you go to him for upgrades. Stealth, fighting, and action happen across many underground levels, and the game reaches its climax as you are about to assassinate the god of Xibalba, when suddenly the caverns flood. The ages are transitioning and R'lyeh is on the scene. No more stealth, only dreams. And that's how the game ends.

>MMO
Player driven, each zone has a fort, and it has Dark Age of Camelot-style PvP. Number one player in any nation can be the Pretender God if your nation controls at least one Throne. Labs and Forts and Temples can only be built at specific places, but can be built, upgraded, and razed. Player homes can be built anywhere but each fort has a limited number of player homes. The province lord can pay resources to increase them. Lots of roleplay-heavy shit, with Russians and Brazilians segregated to their own servers.

>-First Person game
In the campaign mode, you're an Ulmish smith, you shoot iron darts at people and use magic to change the terrain. Multiplayer includes a mage type for each element, but it's basically an FPS with evocation instead of guns, and other terrain warping stuff as well. D is the only one with summons.

What are some good strategies for EA Pangaea? I've only played them once in a proper game, but I wasn't sure where to go with them beyond amassing hordes of maenads. Numbers only seem to get you so far.

In particular, I don't know how to take advantage of their magic. What good spells does Nature get outside of Wooden Warriors and the late-game battlefield buffs? Or are those all you need?
>>
>>155273419
Stealth raiders and seducer-assassins for starters.

Besides battlefield-wide spells that tend to high in research (Gaia's Blessing, Mass Regeneration, Relief, Howl), pure nature is a fairly impotent in combat. Sleep clouds are decent, Storm of Thorns is decent, Panic is decent in smaller early game engagements, Charm is pretty good if your enemy has big chunks of HP you'd like to capture (like anything SC like without sufficient MR) etc but it doesn't have the impact of Thunder Strike batteries and such like.

Most of Pangaea's battlefield-potency comes from Earth (Strength of Giants until you get the battlefield-wide Rush of Strength in blood, Weapons of Sharpness, Earthquake, Destruction, Iron Bane, Marble Warriors until you get Army of Lead/Gold etc), which is one of the reasons MA Pan is a good bit stronger than EA (due to their better Earth access). However, EA Pangaea can also take advantage of these Earth spells. They have to rely on boosters more (remember that you have access to blood stones in addition to earth boots) but the tactics are the same. It's also worth noting that while maenad hordes can get shit done, Revelers are still the real killers. Now that they're undisciplined and can't be told to hold before attacking, you kinda need to buff them turn 1 (which makes earth boosters more critical), but if you can afford the boosters for buffing them without Summon Earthpower being necessary, revelers still rape everything, pretty much.

If you need a sink for nature gems, try lamias.
>>
>>155244585
It's Poschengband.
>>
>>155273419
Dryads using seduction casting swarm are super powerful.

Go for a W9 bless, they are strong enough to pummel another nation into submission before turn 24.

Magic: Alteration is an all-star
Nature: Protection, Swarm(super strong), Wooden Warriors, Vine Ogres, Summon Wolves, Howl, The tangle vines in conjuration, Mother Oak

Earth: Earth Meld. Destruction, Earth Elementals, Maws of Earth, iron warriors, strength of giants, marble warriors, army of foo

Water: Quickness (true quickness is better than bless quickness, gives double attacks +3att/+3def, the stats stack with the bless), Bottles of Living water for your dryads.

Other cool spells: Relief, Foul Vapours(use on heavily armored, human-sized forces preferably), Vengeful Waters(if you went W9), Charm,

Do not underestimate swarm, it's a very powerful battle spell.

I actually prefer Order 3 for mo money, but Turmoil 1 is also decent. Turmoil 1 gives you maenads and does not gimp your research too much.

Troops of choice: revelers - stats are amazing and you want to be buffing these dudes.
>>
>>155274070
I forgot Earth Meld and Maws of Earth, those are very nice as well.
>>
>>155274134
>Turmoil does not gimp your gold income too much
>>
>>155273419
Your early game is blessed or doubleblessed Centaurs (W9 at least, though N9 is also viable). Those fuckers will expand with minimal losses and even win most early wars with very little backup required.

I'm actually not much of a fan of massing maenads, because maenads are nice free chaff but kinda shit for actual fighting. Use centaurs and revelers for that. Not massing maenads also opens up the option of going Order isntead of Turmoil (or just going with neutral scales so you still get some meanads instead of drowning yourself in them).

N is mostly for buffs, which makes your maenads and revelers a lot better than they are, but it's not great for actual offense. One nature spell that I feel is absolutely essential for Pan which people don't always realise is Fairy Court, since it gives you A access which you will need in lategame. Another N essential is Swarm which you will usually want to pick up ASAP, since it makes Pan a real nightmare to fight. Dryads seem like crappy units since they're poor researchers and poor casters, but give them a few N gems to cast Swarm are one of the best recruitable units for disrupting enemy stacks through seduction/assassination and they'll beat just about anything short of heavy thugs or skelespammers one-on-one. They can also lead groups of stealth raiders, which is definitely a nice option, especially when they're revelers so you can spread unrest in enemy provinces while you raid them.

Pans give you E access which is very much essential, both for buffing your troops, even more so than N which you have plenty of anyway, and because it has much better offensive options than N. Every E2 Pan is valuable (slap some boots and/or a bloodstone on them, cast Earth Power, and you've got access to a lot of very neat stuff), and the extremely rare E3 Pan is a national treasure.

Centaur mages are kinda crap, but they're your most cost-efficient researchers.
>>
>>155273124

>He is not posting income or other graphs for a reason.

I'll gladly post them when I get back home since you're at the top of every single one of them except research.

You can't weasel your way out of this one because it's clear by all objective measures that you're on the verge of winning the game.
>>
>>155274320

I had 4 claimed points and controlled 5 points out of 15 needed. Not even mentioning that Ulm has the shattered throne on top of his blood economy. But sure, I am the big threat. Not runaway Ermor or Ulm that can afford thousands of actual troops.

Actually good:
Send Horror, but you need to attack with a scout after.

The others are prrtty bad in an actual fight.
Arouse hunger - ghouls, better to stuff forts or used as siege power
Call of the Wild - werewolves + wolves, can take low PD
Call of the Winds - summons birds, also low PD only, better to be used as fort stuffers/patrollers imo.
P

hantasmal attack - it also is pretty shit
Carrion reanimation - 100 soulless
Horde from hell - the Devil commander is pretty useful

That's it I think. Send Horror has a chance of sending beefy horrors, so I'd say that's the strongest.
Overall don't expect to take more than 5-10 PD

Nazca's mages did nothing other than earthpowering & spamming skeletons in a battle against 90 elite tribless sacreds with 0 enc. It's not like Ermor did anything smart (his mages threw away like 10-15 gems casting Shadow Blast on skeletons), he just brought some troops worth a damn.

Call of the Wild is pretty good, but using it as a "thug spell" isn't why.

Werewolves have no upkeep, and can freespawn wolves, which also have no upkeep. Both are stealthy, neither are mindless.

As such, Werewolves are FANTASTIC for generating fort-defence teams. A werewolf and forty wolves can get inside a sieged fortress in order to slow the defence drop with noone the wiser.

They are also pretty solid thugs, but you need to gear them for that.

In general the casting AI prefers maximizing damage, but is not always great at math. It doesn't think about MR, for example.

It will avoid casting elemental damage spells at things with resistance to the element if other things are available, but HP-per-square is also a component which sometimes overrides that.

I'm not sure about the 3x damage conditionals though. Maybe test it with Fall Bears?

Cleaned house by turn seven, ran up to the lich queen and got it down to 1hp in a single round of attacks, lich queen killed one swamp guard with hand of death, then the full squad of 131 15-17 morale sacred routed. One of my lizard kings died in the aftermath trying to banish the lich queen.
I don't understand what happened. There was nothing that could have caused a morale check, they should have very well passed any morale check easily, and it seems so odd to bring it down to exactly 1hp and then have this happen.

She had a fear 9 aura, it got maybe three or four units. And the ability of fear auras to actually trigger a morale check is very poorly understood, but I'm sure one fear 9 aura can't cause a check on its own.
>>
>>155293869

As far as I'm aware, Fear auras never cause a morale check on their own, but do lower the morale of everything in their AoE by their value when it's called upon to make a morale check. So the dudes surrounding her were functionally Morale 6-8, rather than 15-17.

So just curious, with summod active what would people say the weakest nation in each age is?

For me -

EA: C'tis (most of the other trashy nations got pretty solid buffs - Hinnom, Helheim, Abysia, R'lyeh, etc - but not so for C'tis).
MA: Oceania (no significant buffs on a nation with 0 wins)
LA: Man (RoS nerf hits them harder than anything buffs them, on an already weak nation).

>>155296108
>very powerful mid-late game
C'tis has access to neither feathers nor lanterns in the EA, so Tartarians aren't exactly mid-late, but more actual late. With 0 midgame summons, 0 useful pathing outside high death (which can only HoS/Darkness/Rigor, and that's the only thing C'tis can do at all) and having your casters eat dicks in any amount of cold, makes for a pretty meh midgame.

I'll grant you Ur - I literally fucking forgot they existed at all.

Instead of saying these nations are weaker than C'tis, when statistics show them being stronger, how about you prove it by winning games as C'tis? Because when you make a list of nations where most of them have at least twice as many wins as C'tis, sorry, I don't fucking believe you.

>>
>>155299103
He's done some, but why are you bringing up moggers?
>>
>>155298706
Because more experienced players tend to play Yomi? It's not inherently strong, you need to know what you're doing to win with them.

Same with C'tis, but the C'tis players are mostly scrubs.
>>
>>155298706
For starters, there's a huge number of factions and ultimately not too many games played so sample size is rather low. This also allows individual players or certain demographics (like staling Ulm players losing by default) to alter the results to a pretty major degree.

Moreover, there's a question of absolute strength (how much ass a nation could kick from even ground) and realized strength within a certain diplomatic meta (how likely they are to find themselves ignored or alternatively removed by a coalition). I think C'tis is perceived to be a potent nation (the fact that you are having this argument kinda demonstrates this) so they suffer a malus to their winrates. The same applies to nations like Xibalba and Ermor, it's just that they're so powerful they stand a good chance of fighting off a coalition (and have deterrents to invasion so people hesitate to remove them even when they should, something that C'tis doesn't have). I think it's more useful to measure strength of nations by absolute strength but win rates only measure the realized form.

I've rarely had E gems left over after combat stuff (similar to air gems). Once all your E mages have boots and gems for WoS and Maws and Army of X and so on, if your armies use squishy mages you can start armoring them up to help guard against RoS and acid storm and so on.

You can use extra gems to send out your E mages as raiders using elementals to take out PD.

There's a lot of decent thug / anti SC gear in E as well. The big ones are low level and loved for their efficiency (girdle, armor of knights), but gatecleavers are amazing for killing prot reliant SCs or usually tough immobiles.

In summod, Siege Golems are really good, both at sieging and at punching golems in the face to death. They are also extremely resilient evo soaks and lineholders.

Once you're set on armor, and thug gear, and anti-SC gear, and sieging, and battlemagic, and raiding elemental casters, then you're clearly not fighting enough people and need to go invade a neighbor with your massive resource advantage.

How do I get good at Dominions 4?
I'm not a noob, I understand the very basics, but I keep losing because I fail to adapt to that game.

In a normal game, research unlocks better units that you can hire and incorporate in your army.
In Dominions 4, all units are already unlocked from the beginning, and only mages can progress.
So how do I play? Should I have 75% of my mages researching and 25% of them casting spells and rituals or something?

And if anyone says "it depends", I'll go full reaver on your ass until you can't even crawl.

EA Tien Chi has amazing sacreds, albeit very susceptible to arrow fire.

So tribless it up. The mages are tricky to use and you need lab+temple to churn out more mages, luckily you won't need magic for the first 2 years with a good bless. (w9 at minimum)
>>
>>155310951
Early research spells are mostly pretty bad, past level 5 is when the real battlemagic comes online for most schools.
Case in point, horde of skeletons is way stronger than the previous undead summoning spells and lets you flood battlefields with skeletons if you have enough D2 mages.
>>
>>155310951
It helps to remember that a single mage casting a single evo that isn't a huge one isn't a big deal. The idea is to have many mages all casting evocations. Same applies to your buffs. And I...don't think there's an Invocation school. Conjuration maybe?
>>
>>155310951
EA TC has kinda weird mages.

Your first battlemagic, if you're using a big bless strat, comes online at Conj 1 - Summon Ancestral Spirit. Basically the way that you use this is that you have a bunch of your cheap D1 mages cast it and your prophet spam Divine Blessing. This lets you get a bunch of big blessed spooks out. Normally they can't even hurt anything, but with an F bless they can (they get the flaming weapons effect in spite of normally only being able to paralyze), but even without an F bless they will block up the enemy army. Because they're ethereal, they ignore 3/4 of attacks that hit them. With an S bless, they also ignore the first attack that would deal damage. With a B bless they reflect damage back at the opponent. With an N bless, they can potentially survive a hit or banishment. With a W bless, they become even harder to hit. etc

Like skellyspam, they essentially prevent your opponent's armies from killing your stuff. Unlike skellyspam, they don't actually kill the enemy themselves either, so you'll want to either use your excellent archers behind them, or have the ghosts run up the middle while your sacreds flank the sides. Wushus are very good at killing things.
>>
>>155311163
But research only unlocks better spells, who can only be used by expensive mages that take 2 turns to hire. Am I supposed to hire top tier mages in my capital and build a shitload of laboratories with shit mages to do the research?

It hits everything in 1 square. And then every square around it is hit with 10 fatigue damage. And has a chance to catch on fire. Catching on fire is more effective in Heat 3 scales.

>meh fatigue
It's -1 defence per 10 fatigue on a unit, so it's not insignificant when you have mages slinging fireballs at the enemy.
>>
>>155311383
That's only your very, very early battle magic. The real core of EA TC's magic is its cap only diverse mages, especially when used with communions. They're quite a bit harder to use well, though.
>>

>>
>>155311662
Some nations don't really use communions. EA and MA TC has mages with really wide, but shallow access to different paths. Communions boost up ALL of the paths that you have. What this means is that TC can cast all sorts of big battlefield spells with communions, but has relatively weak magic without them.
>>
>>155311807
At least you know that you're not getting the extension. Ginnungagap's badmin just ignored me.
>>
>>155310951
>buffs seem meh
That's because all the good stuff is higher up. In alteration worthwhile buffs start at wooden warriors. However the single-tile buffs are worth it if you can cast them on elite troops. Body ethereal causes 75% of non-magical attack to just outright miss. That's a lot.

So onto the good stuff, buffs in alteration:
Protection, Wooden Warriors, Fog Warriors, Marble Warriors, Army of Lead, Mass Protection, Body Ethereal, Quickness, Quickening

Swarm is one of the better nature spells btw.

You need a lot of research to hit the better stuff.
>>
>>155311834
So TC is perfect for communions while Ctis or Mictlan wouldn't care about them?

>>155312190
I guess I should just adapt my tactic to my troops and use elite troops instead of just drowning the enemy in low-tier troops.

Just to get this straight : holy troops are always the faction's bestest units, right?
>>
>>155312934
Both of those nations can use communions too, but it's less core to their national magic

>I guess I should just adapt my tactic to my troops and use elite troops instead of just drowning the enemy in low-tier troops.
It really depends on your nation and what you're fighting. EA Atlantis, for instance, gets a lot more out of massing and buffing deep one spearmen than using its heavily armored shamblers once it gets its big AoE buffs researched.

>Just to get this straight : holy troops are always the faction's bestest units, right?
No. They often are, but not always.

Not always, but usually. Serpent Dancers (EA C'tis), for example, are trash. White Centaurs (EA/MA Pangaea) by contrast are rapetrains.

The nations do vary a lot, so you're going to need to work out how to evaluate the worth of troops. Although as a newb, that'll probably take a few games before you start getting it down.
>>
>>155313630
>White Centaurs (EA/MA Pangaea) by contrast are rapetrains.
Fitting, given their mythological origins
>>
>>155313390
Sacreds aren't always the best units, though they usually are. However, once blessed they will definitely be your best recruitable unit for the cost. Recruiting sacreds without a bless is often not cost effective.

Whether or not they are good enough that it's worth to design your pretender around it is another matter entirely.
>>
>>155313390
You're cute. Please stay

>However, once blessed they will definitely be your best recruitable unit for the cost. Recruiting sacreds without a bless is often not cost effective.
Both of these statements are dependent on the nation. Don't misinform our cute newb.
>>
>>155312934
>Just to get this straight : holy troops are always the faction's bestest units, right?
No. They tend to be elite (but not always, like flagellants for Marignon) but their desirability is a whole another matter because they tend to be priced above standard troops. Now, in principle all sacred troops can be made cost-effective by investing in a bless (dependent on the magical paths of your pretender, you gain increasingly powerful "minor bless" at magical skills 4, 6, 8 and 10 and a secondary powerful effect at magical skill 9) but for a lot of them the opportunity cost is crippling and they still won't be good. A good example would be Airya Temple Guards for Early Age Caelum: in principle they have good (but not 21 gold good) statistics but they don't fly and have map movement of 1 so realistically you can't deploy them with your flying map movement 3 armies and they end up being worthless.

Some nations are more or less defined by their sacreds (recruitable or summonable), such as Vanheim with Vanheres and their Vanjarl commanders (who can become extremely potent with Mistform self-buff and a few items) or Middle Age Agartha with their sacred statue summons. On the other hand, some nations can take a bless to survive the early game or it's one possible way of playing the nation and there are some nations whose sacred troops are useless.

Looks like you're playing T'ien Ch'i and it's one of those nations who can use a bless but doesn't have to. Warriors of Five Elements for Early Age, Red Guards for Middle Age and Ancestral Vessels for Late Age. I personally consider a bless for WotFE pretty core for the nation, for other ages I'd be inclined to play without a bless but it's not an outright wrong way of playing either.

Once you understand the game reasonably well, you can play different nations and figure out what magic and units to use based on having seen them used by others and just by your understanding of what spells they can cast and what those spells do.

>>
>>155314965
So what about the Conan faction, Ulm?
If I got it right, they have a very solid infantry but low-tier mages, right? So the mages should be about buffing the units instead of attacking or summoning monsters?
>>
>>155314541
Well, luckily you can take advantage of 15 years worth of accumulated Dominions know-how (or 3 years for Dom4 specifically) rather than having to figure it all out yourself.

Besides, after you have played some, you'll get a "feel" for how well each unit will perform and whether or not they're cost-efficient (and in case of sacreds, if they are good enough to justify taking a bless, and which).
>>
>>155315145
>can take advantage of 15 years worth of accumulated Dominions
You want me to rape you, or did you just phrased your sentence very poorly?
>>
>>155315253
Dominions: Priests, Prophets and Pretenders was released 15 years ago. What I meant is that, while each iteration has reset the balance and meta a bit, the general principles of playing the game have been figured out and you can tap to that knowledge by asking questions, reading guides or copying the tactics of more experienced players you've seen in your games.
>>
>>155315592
Haa. I though you were telling me to take advantage of you, as you've been playing it for 15 years.
B-because, if it's you, senpai, I don't mind.
>>
>>155315078
Buffing their troops IS something that Ulm does well. One of their main magics is Earth magic and Earth is just excellent. With Earthpower (a conjuration spell), an Earth mage can boost himself up by 1. This means that an E2 mage (fairly common for Ulm) becomes E3, so now they can not only cast some dope buffs (Strength of Giants and Legions of Steel early, Marble Warriors later on), they can also cast some great offensive spells and debuffs (Maws of the Earth, Destruction, Bladewind) and summon big elementals. With Air, they can cast Rain of Stones (hurt the whole battlefield and kill all the squishy human mages), with fire they can cast Magma Eruption (BIG AoE damage).

Ulm also has access to water for alternative buffs, fire for elementals for storming castles and dealing with skeleton spam, death for making skeleton spam of your own, nature for yet more different buffs, and of course a small forge bonus for making items to both boost up your mages and let you gear up resilient summons with items to raid solo.

Oh, and in addition to all of this, a LOT of Ulm's stuff is stealthy, which means you can sneak raiding parties into enemy territory and decloak a bunch at once to seize all of their provinces and then melt away into the night when they try to chase your raiders down, only to coalesce later with yet more mages to kill their armies.

In short, while they appear to have low-ish level mages, they actually have a very diverse toolkit and can use a lot of different kinds of magic well
>>
>>155315001
Wow, with an attitude like that, I'm not even in the game, and I'm considering sending resends.
>>
>>155315078
Ulm takes buffs well. They also raid well. They can do some evocations and battlefield magic well, but they struggle with ritual magic, yes. This can be supplemented by taking a god who is good at rituals.
>>
>>155316054
>but they struggle with ritual magic, yes
I'm not sure what you mean by this, but I am concerned that you are likely to be wrong.

The only things that Ulm wants and doesn't have access to are super high path stuff that other nations also don't usually have access to without a pretender to at least provide boosters, if not cast it themselves.
>>
>>155316023
He's just roleplaying.
>>
>>155316238
Ritual magic is the game term for the non battlefield spells. Ulm natively has access to very few that aren't low level summons. Most nations have high enough access in at least one path to cast a few.
>>
>>155316520
I know what they are; I don't know what you mean by them being bad at it. What generic rituals does Ulm want to cast that it doesn't have access to that other nations do?
>>
>>155316579
Mother Oak, Riches from beneath, and gift of health, to name a few.
>>

Most things at level 4+? Ulm gets f3a2w4e4n3d1if extremely lucky and all boosters. That gets you all the way to riches of the earth, and doesn't open up any serious bootstrapping. Most other nations at least have access to a summon to help them break into other paths, and have access to a few spells that are more useful.
>>
>>155316958
I can make one assuming you actually want a slow-paced game and are not just memeing around.
>>
>>155317029
My point was that those spells are not generally accessible. I don't disagree that Ulm can use a pretender that can cast globals for them or break them into other magic (either N globals or maybe EBDW, or else a pretender to give them deeper D access or break them into blood), but I also wouldn't call them 'bad at rituals' because big rituals are generally uncommon, not just in Ulm. The only nations that are really going to spam out tons of rituals are nations with interesting national stuff like Agartha and MA Ermor or blood nations.

>Sounds like "it depends" really isn't a meme

It both is and it isn't. On the one hand, it's all-purpose advice insulation for when you can't think of a more intelligent/helpful answer, and a lot of people use it as such. On the other hand, 99% of Dominions is 4D chess - Counters countering counters that you planned to counter with other counters, with eight other people all trying to counter each of those counters. With so many variables, the answer to almost any question you can ask that isn't basic gameplay and gameflow is 'It depends'.

'It depends' has become meta-humour specifically because it sounds like a meme but really isn't.

Attacking enemy provinces with small disposable forces, which can be anything (like a single D2 mage spamming Horde of Skeletons, and indie commander with 20 non-elite troops or a Vanjarl thug with Frost Brand and Vine Shield). Your intent can be to conquer the provinces permanently, but you can do it just for the purposes of disrupting the enemy economy while boosting your own, gaining intelligence of enemy movements, tactics and army composition (leave 1 PD behind) or clearing way to your main forces such that they can get defender's advantage or move faster than province a turn.

Wars will and should almost always involve raiding and counter-raiding at least to a degree (there are some exceptions like the enemy having access to Send Horror, in which case you're almost always going to lose more than the cost of Horror) but some types of troops are more suited for it than others. The mobile (fliers, stealthers being able to be elusive and move in enemy territory is mobility in its own way, mages capable of teleporting or cloud trapezing in), the disposable (like Ermor attacking with freespawn commanders and freespawn skeletons) and the efficient (265g Vanjarl is can be made almost invulnerable to regular troops so so they can't be countered cost-effectively with regular troops and you need heavier guns) are ideal, but if you don't engage in raiding and counter-raiding of your own, some nations can beat you without fighting a single pitched battle.
