I hate it when writers bash characters they don't like and am terrified I do the same on some level, simply due to my own interpretation of that character. So when I write them, I feel like I am juggling china while walking on a tightrope, not wanting to lose the feel of the character (whom I hate/dislike) in an attempt to write them reasonably, while also not indulging myself in a petty vengeance against them or mischaracterising them as worse people than they actually are.

It depends on the person, but I approach the whole thing from a theatre perspective because that's the closest I've done to serious writing.

So try to jump into a character's head, think about what they'd think, how would they contextualise and interpret certain things.

Also keep in mind that descriptions and events aren't just a historic detailing, but part of an overall narrative, a tapestry. Try building an idea of how and where the mood should progress, colour events with the appropriate brush.

Someone chipper about their life might have a conversation with someone, watching kids at the Academy just practice shuriken, light-heartedly recall the mistakes they used to make, be happy the next generation is coming along fine, make an observation that the instructor chuunin lady is quite a looker.

Someone who is in far less bright a mood might reflect on the fact that they are being trained as child soldiers, wonder how long until these kids face situations no human being should, how many of them will live five years after graduation - not necessarily brooding or edgy for its own sake, just to build the momentum of the next scenes or situation of the character, which would influence how they act then.

Alright. Summary time. Starting with yesterday's game.

We left our intrepid heroes shopping. Very exciting. They had pretty much finished up at the weapons store, where Waniko had managed to use her womanly wiles to snag a Shimazu Warglaive for 300 Ryo. Good for her. At Renya's request, the four of them then decided to work their way towards the nearby book store. On the way, they passed a jeweller's stall, and rolling a nat 20 on his Stealth check, Renya was able to slip away, inspect some rings, and come back without any of his teammates noticing he had left. He didn't buy anything, though.

At the book store, Renya asked about anything regarding the history of Noxus. This made Kagu look at him a little suspiciously, and he said that he'd be hard-pressed to find anything like that in a regular book shop - with the Shimazu clan the paranoid bunch of nerds that they are, almost everything relating to the history of the island - and the clan - is either word of mouth, or locked up somewhere deep within the Grand Library of Noxus. Giving up on a history book, he decided to ask the shopkeeper what the best-selling book at the moment was. Checking his sales, the shopkeeper told him that, technically, the best-selling book would be a tome of mainland plants that could be used for various toxins and poisons, as the Raven Guard had just placed a big order. Before he could go on, Renya said that sounded perfect, and asked for a copy.

The shopkeeper said that he couldn't sell the same version that the Raven Guard had, but he got what was essentially a cut down version for civilians. Renya accepted it and grabbed it for 60 Ryo. With nobody else wanting to buy a book, the team moved on to the armour and clothing store.

Anyway, when they reached the clothing store, Kagu had a quick chat with the shopkeeper, motioning to Waniko.The shopkeeper came over and asked if she was the new Shimazu, and what she thought of Noxus. She said that she hadn't expected anything like this, but it was nice to have a home - to have a family. The shopkeeper smiled, apparently pleased with her answer, and told her to wait for a second. He went behind the counter, and after a second, came back with some black material. Throwing it around her shoulders and pulling the cowl over her head, her teammates could see a white stylised raven on the back of a cloak. The shopkeeper said that no Shimazu would be seen without one, and to consider it a welcome home gift. He offered to put weights on the end for 50 Ryo, and she took him up on the offer.

Fugetsu asked if he had some sort of shadow shenanigans, like the weapons did, but the shopkeeper just laughed and said that it was just a normal travelling cloak. Things like Chameleonic Cloaks were incredibly rare, and he hadn't even seen any - or heard of any - beyond Lord Shimazu's Cloak of the Raven. The shopkeeper then started a rant about how the Warring States Period was great because men were men, blacksmiths knew how to make REAL armour and weapons, and there was no pussyfooting around with diplomacy and shit.

Getting off that topic before he went full warmonger, Waniko and Renya asked about leg armour. The cheapest stuff the shopkeeper had was hardened fibre gear - it wouldn't stop a sword swing, but it could turn aside a kunai, at least a few times. Waniko picked up a set, gaining a 1 AC boost. Nobody else bought anything, and so it was time to move on. Outside, Kagu asked the team if they wanted to head to the industrial district, or the Raven Guard compound. The team picked the industrial district.

Getting to the district, Kagu asked what the kids specifically wanted to see here. Arata showed Kagu the kunai with chain he snagged from the cave way back in mission one, pointing out the design. Kagu didn't recognise it, but said he knew of a man who specialised in custom kunai, who might know. The five of them set off, and they soon were outside a small shopfront that was back onto a forge. Heading inside, there was a small man working at a counter with a tiny hammer and chisel, with the walls and display cases lined with kunai and short blades of all shapes and sizes, including ones that looked like Minato's Flying Thunder God kunai. Planewrong, out of character, said they probably weren't Minato's ACTUAL kunai, and he was right. They weren't. One of Minato's actual teleporting kunai was locked in a chakra-null safe in the Grand Library of Noxus, however. Arata cleared his throat to try and get the shopkeeper's attention. This was met with a gruff "I know you're there. I'm not blind. Hold your bloody horses."

Once the shopkeeper was done with his work, he asked what Arata wanted, who presented the kunai with chain again, and asked about the wolfshead sigil on it. The old craftsman took a look at it, and muttered about the tensile strength of the wire, and said that the kunai was weighted odd, saying that 'those mutts' couldn't make a decent kunai to save their life. He asked where Arata got it, who told him that it was in a cave near Konoha. The smith said that yes, he knew who had made the weapon, saying that he had seen more than a few weapons with that mark on it kill Shimazu. Arata asked if he could get him in touch with them, and the man said that he knew where - and who - they were. The mark was the brand of the Okami clan, who lived SOMEWHERE within the massive mountain range on Konoha's northern border, known as the Fang. Inside one of the mountains, known as the Throat of the World, they had their city.

The shopkeeper said if Arata had a spare few decades, he could scour all of the caves looking for the ones that led to a city. Kagu wandered over to the smith and asked if Chiyori was around. The smith said that he probably was, in his usual shop. Kagu thanked him, and told the team he had one more place to go to, leading them back down the main street of the district. The second place had a much bigger forge and furnace, and a very small shopfront. Kagu headed in and motioned the team to follow. Inside, he was speaking to a man with a blacksmith's apron on. Unlike the last smith, this man was big, in his prime, and had clearly worked the forge for many years. Kagu turned as the team entered and asked Fugetsu to step forward. He spoke to the smith - who could only be Chiyori - saying that Fugetsu is the one he was talking about, and that he had the Boil Release kekkei genkai. Chiyori looked at Fugetsu, but said that didn't explain why Kagu was there, and that he was very busy.

Kagu handed over a folder, and said that the last time someone with the same Boil Release style as Fugetsu was around, they used something like 'this', and that it wasn't a problem to offer him some help if it meant one of theirs was better defended. Fugetsu decided to butt in with a smartass comment, saying 'Oh boy, I love being vague'. Kagu responded with how he loved sarcastic kids while he was trying to help them, and told Waniko to get her boyfriend under control, which resulted in Waniko furiously blushing. Turning back to Chiyori, Kagu asked if it could be done, and Chiyori scratched his head, saying that sure, it could be done, but Kagu would need to come up with funding, and he didn't think Lord Shimazu would cover it. Kagu said not to worry about funding, and Fugetsu piped up again, saying that they could just bill his parents if it was important.

Kagu said that the thought did cross his mind, but also decided to shed some light on exactly what they were doing. Kagu spoke about Han, and his Furnace Armour. Fugetsu, as a student of Kokuou, was already a little bit aware of who Han was. Fugetsu said it sounded bulky and uncomfortable, and Kagu said that it could probably be refined to be smaller. As of right now, it would be prototype armour. Chioryi said it'd take a few weeks to get everything sorted, and while Waniko suggested staying in Noxus until then, Kagu said it'd depend on what Naruto said, and how fast he wanted them back on the mainland. Finished there, the team made their way to the final stop - the walled compound of the Raven Guard.

As Kagu approached the gates, the guards on duty recognised him, nodded hello, and let him and the team pass, giving them odd looks. Looking around, the team saw dozens of Shimazu training, from hand to hand combat, to weapons training, to stealth drills, to team combat tactics. Kagu explained that this was where the Raven Guard lived and trained. He said there used to be a lot less of them here a once, as they used to get sent out of regular missions, before Lord Shimazu IV decided to abstain from major mainland operations. Waniko asked when she'd be able to train alongside them, and Kagu said when she was Raven Guard, and that they were taught skills and techniques that even normal Shimazu don't learn. Waniko was a bit let down.

As they were talking, four Raven Guard operators came over to say hi to Kagu and ask what the kids were doing there. Kagu said that they were there from the mainland, investigating the murder that an Shimazu was implicated in. The Guard scratched his chin, before clarifying - what were they doing HERE, in the Raven Guard compound.

Kagu motioned to Waniko, and explained that the clan had a new cousin, a half-Shimazu, raised on the mainland and unaware of her heritage. The Raven Guard team were quite interested at that, asking Kagu how good the team was. Kagu shrugged and turned to the kids, asking how good they were. Fugetsu said he was supposed to be pretty good, and Arata said that none of them had died yet due to incompetence. Waniko said she didn't want to brag, but nobody back in Ame used to want to spar with her, as she'd trounce them every time. That was where we left that game.

Today's game started almost exactly where the day before had left off, with the team chatting to the Raven Guard. The team leader turns to his team and whispers to them for a second, before turning back with a proposition: if they were able to impress the team, the Raven Guard would be able to hand over something interesting to all of them. Secrets are a Shimazu's currency, and the team leader reckoned that there'd be something worth something to all of them, somewhere. The team agreed, and everyone set off for Hall C. Renya asked if the training grounds would be better, but the Guard said that the halls were used because the Raven Guard could control all internal functions, from light and humidity, to foliage and whether it was raining. The operators worked all over the mainland, so the halls were often opened to the non-Raven Guard operators to prepare them for their various missions.

The two four-man teams enter what looks to be a massive warehouse. It was fairly well-lit inside, with four massive lamps on top of pillars lighting the room. The team leader pointed to the other side of the room, and told the Genin to head there, clarifying that this wasn't a fight to the death. The team leader looked up at a large, mirrored pane of glass that was overlooking the training area, saying "Night fighting, rotating". A voice, from hidden speakers, confirmed his command, and the fight began.

Fugetsu went first as the lights dimmed, and the team suddenly understood what was meant by 'night fighting'. This took the form of me using fog of war to cut down the sight of all the players to about 15ft. Fugetsu decided to play it safe, using all five of his explosive tags on the ground in a line in front of him, before moving off to the side and taking cover behind a pillar. The Raven Guard were up next, and simply moved up, taking cover where possible. The lights brighten after their turn, and it's Waniko's turn. She used the Hiding in the Rain Technique, and smashing the Stealth check with a +13 bonus, faded from sight, backing up against the wall. Arata was up next, and created a clone - not a shadow clone - which was to last one turn. The Guard all saw him make it, however, so they knew which was the real Arata. Arata and his clone then moved behind the pillar to the right, out of sight. Renya finished off the game turn, creating three clones, leaving them in plain sight, while he moved next to Fugetsu behind the left pillar.

Fugetsu kicked off game turn two by ALSO making a clone, but the Raven Guard couldn't see him make it, so if he sent the clone out, they'd assume it's the real him. He then decided not to move, preferring to remain in cover. The Raven Guard moved up again, with one of them stepping onto the explosive tag trap that Fugetsu laid down. He passed a DEX check and avoided the worst of the explosion, but still took 8 damage. Two others simply move into position, with one of them using Water Release: Water Shield Jutsu, with the final one using Fire Release: Rising Fire Jutsu to quickly launch into close combat with Renya, blasting forward on wings of flame, smashing into the ground in front of him. Renya avoided the direct impact, but caught the concussive wave of the Raven Guard slamming into the concrete, splintering it. and took 2 damage.

Waniko's turn came around again, and she moved towards the Guard who had stepped on the explosive tag. Stepping forwards, she raised her arms, palm out, towards him. A roaring snake made of water formed out of the rain that was still drenching the battlefield, coiling around her before streaking towards the Raven Guard. He turned and put his arms up to defend, but it was too little too late, with the snake slamming him off his feet into the small wall behind him, taking 6 damage. The Raven Guard shook his head a little and grinned at Waniko, collecting himself. He stood up and looked towards the mirrored pane of glass. "Raven Guard member: out" said a voice over the hidden speakers, and the Guard praised Waniko, saying he had no idea where she had learned to make it rain like that, but if it worked, it worked. He exited the field, heading through a door in the corner, up towards the observation deck.

Arata's turn came around, and he made his clone climb the pillar near him, jumping down onto the Raven Guard, distracting him. While the Guard was focused on the clone, Arata stepped out and swung the weighted end of his kusarigama at the Guard's legs. Unprepared, and barely making the hit, Arata managed to snag his leg, dragging him to the ground. Renya steps up to his turn with a solid plan - stab the Raven Guard who had charged into combat last turn with a kunai and explosive tag, and then use Air Release: Air Detonation Jutsu to blast him backwards into his teammate. And it would've worked...if he had actually hit with his kunai. As it is, he missed, but managed to land with the Air Detonation, blasting the Guard back for 3 damage and sending him slamming back into the wall hard enough to crack the concrete for another 5 damage.

That was where we left it, as Nero had to leave for work. One Raven Guard down, one injured, two healthy, with the Genin all in tip-top shape except for Renya, who had 2 damage.

In retrospect, smashing through the Raven Guard as easily as they have been may not have been in the team's best interests, as now I'm going to buff the Raid bosses EVEN MORE, since they're meant to be WAY stronger than the Raven Guard. Really, I should've made the Guard a lot stronger as well - I didn't expect one of them to be dropped in turn 2. But that's on me, and I'm happy with the way the team has been playing. They played very defensively, forcing the Raven Guard to come to them. Dunno what's going to happen next turn when night fighting comes into effect again.
