Tales of /дa бoйз/ anon here

After being on hold for approximately a month and a half now due to me being busy and life shit, I'm beginning to get back to work on finishing this motherfucker. Work is completed on 5/8 missions and all the mission scripts have been completed, the last mission script may need revising but that will be done when I get there.

I can't deny that I think afghan ops will overshadow my work completely because it was an extremely great op and due to the way the missions are but I don't give a damn and I'll still try to deliver.

As for the details of the campaign: It'll be a short, 8 mission long MP campaign for the SU-27, Mig-29A and Mig-21Bis with the type of mission as described in the image.

As soon as I'm done making all the missions the entire campaign will be uploaded somewhere as a release candidate and hopefully hosted and tested.

I think that's it, yea.
Fly safe planefags.

Work on and testing of Afghan ops resume tomorrow. If you want to fly, just be awake when I am.

Current playable version: 9.39 (Mission 5 finalized and complete)
Working version: 9.41 (Mission 6 triggering, laying groundwork for 7)

The DCS autumn sale is on right now at Eagle Dynamics. Many modules used in the op, namely FC3 and the Mi-8 are both 40% off. Other modules used in the op with good deals are the Ka-50 (Until DCS Mi-24 comes out next decade), MiG-21, and L-39C (Coming in version 1.42).

Combined Arms, important for directing events as well as allowing you to crew various ground vehicles, is also on for 9 dollars.

>I think afghan ops will overshadow my work completely
Just get more involved with the community. Screenshots, early access tests, discussion and general promotion will keep you in the public eye. An op's an op, and I won't be done with this for awhile so the floor is still yours

There's not much to post about desu. It's literally just driving, hopefully in a straight line (twisties mean lots of braking unless you're playing babymode where 100kmh hairpins can't turn you over) with the most threatening thing being traffic/low speed limits/fatigue

I expected Eagle Dynamics to actually model a couple of ground units so that all of the WW2 products they're shilling (let's not forget the whole DCS WW2 mess) are actually usable.

P-51, Bf 109, Fw-190, upcoming P-47, Spitfire, P-40, etc. are all nigh unflyable without gigs and gigs of mods because there is no stock WW2 anti-air artillery, they throw them into the sky against Shilkas, Zu-23s, rather than having columns of soft targets and unarmed armoured vehicles to strafe, they put you in instant action/single player missions against columns of half a dozen BTR's with their laser accurate auto cannons spraying at you.

My fault for expecting ED to pull their thumb out of their ass after letting every retard who can make a vaguely passable plane in a modelling program make modules while they collect royalties.

I had nothing to do with the grudge match, but I was flying earlier today on a MiG-21 vs F-5 server.

The MiG doesn't have the advantages that it used to. With the radar gimped to hell and back, you lose the head on first shot advantage that you used to have. The F-5 also got its seekers fixed, so it's much easier to aim. The F-5 has a hell of a lot more cockpit visibility as well, which makes it better in a dogfight.

I don't know what visibility settings were on in the server, but under most circumstances the F-5 is really, really hard to see. Because of their light blue color (for the default skin anyway) they blend in so well to backgrounds that they're near impossible to see at all ranges. MiGs tend to have dark paint schemes as well, so it makes spotting MiGs significantly easier, plus F-5s have the much more open cockpit as well.

The MiG still carries more missiles (4 on a typical loadout, 6 if you're a madman), and vanilla R-60s are better than AIM-9P if you're restricted to rear aspect only. The MiG also still has a significant engine power advantage, but with how fucking hard it is to see F-5s, coupled with the highly restrictive cockpit, maintaining sight enough to take advantage of that becomes very difficult to leverage.

Historically, the F-5 was better than the MiG-21 in tests.

Maybe some one here can help me before I resort to the shithole that is the steam forums.

Anyway, I've got two versions of DCS, Steam version and non-steam version. Since Steam views them as two seperate games, when I upload screenshots from the non-steam version I have to manually move them from their original folder into the regular steam version so that they're all found in the same steam library.

However, it doesn't seem to work anymore. It just refuses to upload them all together if I change their folder.

Anyone got any idea why?

>tfw playing a simulator of a job I could very well just go out and do myself

still comfy as fuck for idle podcast fuel tho

American Truck Sim is alright. Only three states in it (tfw can't longhaul from one coast to the other), the AI is dumb and will ram you fairly often but you'll be saddled with the fine, and there are only three goddamn models of truck in the game (no janky old cab-overs)

also having a sleeper on your truck makes absolutely no functional difference you have to pull off into parking lots marked as rest stops either way and even if the place obviously doesn't have sleeping facilities (i.e. a gas station or some shit) you can sleep there in a daycab
>>
Quick question, what game is best if i want to get stuck into some exciting air combat?
>>
>>155102848
What era, what level of simulation?
>>
>>155103047

Preferably WW2 and some early Cold War era stuff. I'm going to give War Thunder a go soon, but i'm afraid it will be to much of an arcade style game.

As for level of simulation, no idea. I'm new at sims, so nothing to overcomplicated would be appreciated.
>>
>>155103483
War Thunder or IL-2 then.

If you want 3rd person views and mouse aim then WT is really your only option.
>>
>>155103557

Gonna give it a try. Thanks anon
>>
>>155103630
If you want an actual WW2 sim then IL-2 CLoD or BoS is your thing, but you'll need a joystick.

IL-2 multiplayer typically has forced 1st person and no icons can be very intimidating to some people, but you get used to it.
>>
>>155102828
Waiting for the scale overhaul before I buy it. Once that kicks in, I'm also planning to get one of those turbogoy 35" curved screens to tuck me in nicely as I experience EXTREME COMFORT. I was severily addicted to the comfort of Euro Truck Sim 2 with ProMod.

also being a truck driver is a fucking horrible job
>>
>>155103483
how arcade it is depends on the difficulty setting

"sim" is fairly realistic, has no visual aids and cockpit view only

it's also dead as fuck online, shitters play "realistic" tops, most of them in ez
>>
>>155104215
>shitters play "realistic" tops, most of them in ez

If it weren't for the dead sim mode I would probably enjoy WT a lot more. It's not exactly "full fidelity" but it's close enough to be cheap fun with a wide variety of plens.

I've tried it a couple times. The only way it feels good to play with a joystick is from first person, and that puts you at a pretty large disadvantage, when the game mode normally enrages me enough with "le epic spitfire that can pull 15 G's" and other such nonsense.

>>

IL-2 Birds/Wings of Prey has nothing to do with the Oleg Maddox IL-2. That was Gaijin's own internal engine using the IL-2 name for brand recognition.

Speaking of Maddox, whatever happened to him? Ever since the Cliffs of Dover fiasco I haven't heard anything.
>>
>>155127392
Maddox is dead because of CLOD and now 777 and 1C has taken the helm

Remember that no matter how bad DCS, IL2, etc. get, at least flight sims aren't in as shitty a place as racing sims and their community is.

So what do the missions in IL2 BOS involve?

Most servers are dead or with about 30 poeple on but some are very much alive such as
"Duel and Dogfight" - Pure AirQuake fun
Wings of lib - 84 Player PVP with objectives
TAW/TAC - Same as WOL but hardcore(no map icons so you must do everything by eye)

What are the objectives? Can you win a game? Does doing objectives matter or is it just DCS air quake?

You can only win by doing your missions which are attacking ground units like boats cites airfields tank companys and if you dont you will likely run out of aircraft as teams have a limit on how much planes they have (which resets at mission change)

>>
>>155147450

It's like an aesthetic thing, in part. How the game looks, any music it might use, if it has a narrative thread then what sort of themes are evoked with that and what sort of characters are involved.

There's also an actual mechanical gameplay element to it, what sort of game modes are available and how fun they are. This is the big thing that makes most sims feel soleless- they get the "simulator" part right, but they don't really give you any game to go with it

It's a mediocre sim, but it's got heart. I do wish BIS supported it long enough to make it anything more than a tech demo, and actually put airports in it, as opposed to painted-on textures

Same reason I tend to play SABOW, a relatively survey-level tanksim with a limited vehicle selection and scope, over Steel Beasts, a sim wherein vehicles generally have more detailed fire control system simulation and a much wider range of available vehicles

SABOW is a much better "feeling" game. Tanks feel heavy, the sound design is loud and noisy and chaotic, getting hit is absolutely terrifying if you really get yourself into the game and have headphones on. And it actually has pre-made content to play, alongside a dynamic campaign... where Steel Beasts has a few fixed single missions and relies on you and the community to make everything else.

Graviteam pls make another WWII tank sim using the Tactics engine

It's shovelware, again. Unless it's called Arma (and even when it is, honestly), they don't care.

It's a damn shame, too, it had a ton of potential. I managed to build quite an impressive base. They patched it a lot, but they never fixed the clunky interface, slow base-building, ever-prevalent BIS bugs, and framerate drops. It's very dependent on MP, but the servers are a ghost town last I looked.
>>
>>155155674

I dunno, the base-building shit never seemed all that interesting to me. The idea of commanding probes and stuff, doing science shit with rover-based tools, dealing with communications delays- that was what got me to buy it.

Sucks.BIS is a shit company.

>TOH
Eurotruck Simulator in the sky is a glorious idea, but it's a bug-riddled, incomplete mess

Probe Mars and build spess colonies from scratch using only the available resources. Again, an amazing idea, with the same sloppiness and incompleteness that permeates all their efforts.

>fly helo irl
>fly helo in fsx
why?
>>
>>155156859
The rotorcraft aerodynamic modeling is sub-par in FSX, to be sure, but it's actually pretty useful to scout out a flight plan before I fly it, especially if I haven't been to the destination, before, and importing real-world weather from Jeppsen helps give me a general idea of what to expect. It's shockingly useful for a $20 piece of recreational software.

I'd go for XP10, but it's a bit too pricey and resource-heavy for me to make the hop.
>>
It also helped me work on the flare at the end of an autorotation thanks to its easy-mode flight model giving me a break if I dumped rotor RPM, and also gave me an early primer on properly filling out a weight and balance sheet.

Steam gauges give a cockpit character, sure, but a glass cockpit offers much more accurate readouts. The big problem keeping them from being adopted by more people in the GA community is their price

What kind of chafes my ass, though, is the fact that they're ditching transponders with alt. encoding all across the US fairly soon, and forcing people to put ADS-B in its place, which is going to be expensive as fuck for everyone who owns, and that price is going to end up falling on us renters and aircraft club members, too, just because of the heightened maintenance costs

Yeah I know.
>>
hello
>>
>>155250585

A 24/7 server that runs a scaled down version of blue flag would save DCS multiplayer 2bh

Same concept. Have a couple of air fields as objectives, a couple as spawns, and leave everything the same.

Just condense the AO to smaller sections of the map.
Gives you a server that lets you fly everything and be useful towards an actual objective that requires slight team work.

Every server reset it changes mission to the same thing, but in different areas.

As fucking dank as that would be, faggots would still fucking fly the 104th and have the time of their lives somehow.
Some of those dudes have been flying 104th for fucking YEARS and still aren't bored of doing literally the exact same shit every day.

104th is the cancer that's killing DCS, for the good of the game it needs to be DDoSd T B H.

And the retards that play on it and wont play on any other server, make it nigh impossible to get a different server populated.
Though the DCS community is so retarded it will always flock the worst server available, because for some fucking reason open conflict is popular.

Basically what you need is: A joystick
A PC capable of running DCS World 1.5
Buying the F-5.

Eventually if you do get into it you may want to invest in head tracking but it's not necessary right away.

Also you have to be aware that this is autism level sim stuff so expect a big learning wall when you start.

If you don't want to count weapon selection (which both planes have to do) that's no different from the MiG-21. If anything there's more to keep in mind, if only because you need to be conscious of keeping your fuel tanks balanced.

That's a pretty retarded point to make either way. Most of your clicking in the cockpit is done just to get a plane running. Once you're in the air it just becomes managing weapons systems and we don't have any fighters yet with complex guided weapons yet.

Doesn't matter
Anything goes
As much as the mission allows for, remember that not everyone has all the modules. Try and include atleast one FC3 plane (because everyone has that) and/or the SU-25T (because it's free). The more restrictive you are with plane selection, the less likely we can all play it. It's also important to note, that if you add the MiG-29, people will fly nothing else, meme around with rockets and get nothing done.
Yes

To be honest unless you're autistic like the rest of us, there's very little click switching involved since you can auto-start the planes and then basically just need to turn your master arm on to enable weapons, maybe a couple of extra switches to cool your seeker heads and turn on the radar in the case of the F-5 (don't own it but have similar planes) and it's basically just point and shoot. If you do any single player missions that start with you already in the air most of this is already done for you.

Then you can just work backwards, once you know the flight controls and weapon controls, and learn the engine start up, etc.

>here's a few dipshits that slip through the cracks

Can confirm the most recent crash locally was caused by a dip shit that piloted it worse than an FSX amateur.

>plane starts entering into a stall due to bad weather conditions preventing proper airflow across the wings on approach
>proper procedure is to let the plane nose down and activate the engines to build up enough speed to prevent stalling
>The pilot instead decides to keep the engines powered down and increase flaps while pulling the nose way the fuck up further worsening the stall
>plane smashes into a house, killing everyone on board, one person in the house and injuring the rest of the family in the house

I just don't understand how a set of pilots with thousands of hours logged can pull such a fucking rookie ass mistake.
>>
>>155358765
That is just plain retarded.

Dude, I don't know jack shit about airplanes, but if I was going to stall, I would nose dive the fuck out of it. I mean, not go 45 degrees, but you get my point.
>>
>>155359963

Yep, it's better to look like a fucking jackass than have a bunch of dead people. The pilot overrode the safeties on the plane and then did the exact opposite of what flight school says to do when in a stall.

Mi-8's fun enough, but it lacks the maneuverability I like in a chopper, and landing approaches in it are almost fixed wing-esque. I also appreciate a simpler startup procedure.

No you can only see planes in range, and visible to the radar.

Oh and it's not the datalink from SP, in SP planes in the same group can datalink to other planes, while that doesn't work in MP.

Literally air france 447 minus the crashing into a house
I still can't believe that there was a retard who thought pulling up in an aerodynamic stall was a good idea
>>155370362
Looks like their "best" pilot really was their worst
Even his crew members protested but they were too beta to simply pull back on the throttles and tell the dumbass he wasn't cleared for takeoff.
So many crashes happen because the pilot's a retard and his crew members are complete betas. It's sad.

That very fact pretty much created the "CRM" movement in pilot and crew training that set out to wipe out the obedient First Officer watching the crash happen just like they thought it would because they were too shit scared to tell the Captain, God in the Cockpit. It's nowhere near as much of an issue these days, at least not in western airlines, but still a big issue in Asian airlines still.

But they did and and gave him correct information
he was just a retard and decided to takeoff after he got vectors for after he was cleared for takeoff.
Though the root problem is the dutch decided that if you flew too much they would delete your pilot's license because "xD this is going to help anything". The problem is always going to be that the dutch are swampniggers.

This, AF447, the ATR someone posted up thread and a number of other accidents in recent times are symptomatic of the new trend in aviation - handling accidents.

For decades, the most common cause of a crash was CFIT - "controlled flight into terrain" - that is, when you hit a hill you didn't realise was there. EGPWS and navigational improvements - and increased use of, and sophistication of automation have almost wiped CFIT accidents out in airlines.

The double edged sword of that reliance - some say over-reliance - on automation is that pilots' hand flying skills have atrophied, and basic stick and rudder flying and response to stalls, unusual attitudes, etc, are not what they used to be. Add to that the fact that new second and first officers are coming to the line with less and less experience, and the most common cause of crashes in the last ten years will end up being poor exercise of basic airmanship and basic flying skills.

It's starting to see some correction in simulator sessions and checks, and it should improve, but it's going to take time - and hopefully not more lives.
>>
>>155380912
Well I mean Alaska Airlines just implemented mandatory Aircraft Upset training
From the footage I saw, pilots have more than plenty of time to react to a stall, considering the plane generally has 30+ seconds to fly normally after the stick shaker starts before the thing actually stalls

In the Colgan and Air France episodes, the crew had ample time to unfuck themselves, but they didn't have the ability to recognise how they'd got in the shit in the first place.

The worst part about the AF447 crash was that the poor bastard captain came back to the flight deck in time to realise what the dumb cunts had done with his aircraft, but not in time to fix it for them, and they crashed a perfectly serviceable Airbus into the ocean and died. Imagine being that poor bastard.
>>
>>155381325
Actually if I remember correctly, the reason AF447 crashed was because the person in the pilot's seat was nosing down, but the copilot was pulling full back, meaning they couldn't regain control
the main reason they crashed was because nobody looked over and saw the copilot was being a grade F- retard
someone should've just socked that fucker in the face and had him fired
>>
>>155380234
What
a
fucking
retard
>>
>>155381534
I forget but was a reason because both the pilots at the time were the same rank and didn't really establish a chain of command so didn't tell each other anything?
>>
>>155381534
>Actually if I remember correctly, the reason AF447 crashed was because the person in the pilot's seat was nosing down, but the copilot was pulling full back, meaning they couldn't regain control

That was part of it. The second officer was in the left seat - the captain's seat - while the captain had a rest break in the rest area, outside the flight deck. The first officer was in his usual seat on the right.

When it all turned to shit, yes, they were making opposite control inputs, and because the Airbus has sidestick controls that aren't mechanically linked to each other, neither could feel the opposing inputs. Because of the way the fly by wire computers work, the left-hand control inputs overrode the right hand ones (which were proper corrective action).

The captain wasn't there to see them fuck up - he came back into the cockpit at fairly low altitude, and saw what was happening, but was too late to do anything about it.
>>
>>155381775
Could've sworn the first officer was the one that was fucking it
also I'm pretty sure airbuses have a button that switches side stick authority
>>
>>155381947
Nope, second officer.

I can't remember the intricacies of Airbus flight controls in alternate law; I had it in my head that the left side overrules the right, or that if one side is making an input the other can't overrule it, but it's late and I can't remember categorically - I fly aircraft with controls that move together.
