It's fairly common to teach a commander without any combat traits one of the ones you know. You learn combat traits very quickly yourself, too, because the focus adds additional triggers for learning them. You can level up your education trait and it happens pretty frequently. It all synergizes really well with sending heirs off to form mercenary companies, too. Warrior kings are great now. It's so consistent, too. You can turn shit characters into powerhouses really quickly.

how should france and flanders/wallonia be handled? I've been mostly going for regionalism in this map, not too balkanized though, just general groupings. Should I give alsace, normandy, and occitania all independence? I feel like that's too far and I should just leave france with its regular borders. But what of belgium?

Mandarin literally derives from 'Man-Da-Ren', 'Manchu men'. It's butchered Ming Chinese because the Manchus literally couldn't pronounce it and standardized it to their own tongue and tried to spread it, with limited success in the south (and most of the rest of China speaks with a heavy accent anyway).

Southern France is a hotbed for heresies and I have to invade and crush them every few years.

Italy is an idea that will never be achieved, and the Pope has more land than he knows what to do with. Scandinavia is ruled by the client King of Norway, who sometimes wages war into Russia with my considerable funding. Every Christian ruler is rich from the millions of ducats I've doled out. Millions.
