I think making him another Detective Prince hurt that deceptive normalcy factor that helped ground Adachi's more outlandish story beats and character traits.

Goro's all ready a colourful character from the outset, but it's spelled out on the cover that he's to join your party. Which would be fine, but he's not in the intro or any of the trailers so what gives? The guy generates more questions right away than out-and-out character traits, but I'll reserve judgement until after his full story is laid out for us to look at.

Suffice to say, if Atlus was trying to create another Adachi phenomenon with Goro, they went about it in an obnoxiously inelegant way.

Personally I really like this theme of abuses of power and it's not going to get old for me (I know some people feel differently). However, now I'm worried that Atlus started off with somebody who's going to be hard to top in terms of invoking player hatred. I feel like the guys Atlus should either hire or at least talk to someone who actually knows how to make decent villains, or at least give the bad guys some buildup. Nyarly can be summed up as "he is evil" because that's all he is. He even basically tells you this, and so does Phil in all his grand wisdom. He represents and is the manifestation of all the chaotic and terrible things in humanity, and he loves the fact that he is what he is.

He loves tormenting you, because he can, and he loves hurting you, because he can. He did what he did because he's Nyarly and Nyarly is chaotic and evil. And that is 100% fine, vilalins like that are good too. Luca Blight is a memorable villain for many people and he had all the depth of a rock used to beat crippled orphans to death.

He was a talented guy who worked hard and had a pretty shitty time in college because he did work so hard, ended up doing something in the big city that got him reassigned to the sticks which he resented, turned out to be more than a little psychotic which was also combined with a sense of entitlement because he worked so hard, ended up getting power from Izanami because he best represented Despair (or Emptiness, can't remember) and decided that there was no reason he shouldn't abuse it since he figured that the power was compensation for being stuck in Inaba, and he was bored enough to turn it into a twisted game.

He was essentially someone who rejected the theme of the game and rather than working on his own personal flaws and accepting them, he blamed everything on the world around him and sank further and further into his own little world of self-absorbtion and entitlement, then was given power beyond what regular people had.

Both of those things, but he's also very entitled and thinks life fucked him over because he doesn't have everything he wants. He's right in his belief that life is all just kind of pointless and random and cruel, but he also thinks he deserves more than that, proving that he's got a huge superiority complex and thinks the rules shouldn't apply to him.

I've argued in the past that Adachi has essentially arrived at the truth (ie life sucks) but he rejected that truth because it wasn't good enough for him. That makes him the perfect villain, thematically speaking.
